Ive just created a group dedicated to Flash-Mob Cataloging. Flash-Mob Cataloging is when a horde of LibraryThing members descend on some small library with laptops and CueCat barcode scanners, catalog their books in LibraryThing, eat some pizza, talk some talk and leave them with a gleaming new LibraryThing catalog. Why do it? There are many small libraries that use LibraryThing as their online catalog-museums, organizations, churches, schools, synagogues, temples, even some embassies! Its an easy cheap solution to library automation. (More on organizational LibraryThing accounts here.) And having a flash-mob do the cataloging makes it easy and fun to do the data entry! Emphasis on the fun, trust me.. Weve done two so far (Rhode Island Audubon Society and St. Johns Church in Beverly MA), to great success. Both were in New England because, well, thats where the most LibraryThing employees are located. But the concept isnt limited by location! Anyone can organize one-hence, the new Flash-Mob ...
Purpose: This study empirically analyzes how users access information resources and evaluate and use information, in the information environment of a college library where physical information resources and digital information resources are mixed. In searching such resources, it is important to clarify the conditions that affect the search performance. We focus on whether clarifying the conditions before searching influences the search behavior or not. Methods: We conducted a search experiment with 44 college students and empirically examined their processes of searching electronic and physical information resources within the library. In this experiment, the subjects were divided into two groups: one was assigned the task of investigatingkeywordsandinformation resources s search conditions before searching, and the other was not. We examined the following two aspects: 1)behavioral characteristics and patterns of using information resources, and 2)differences in behavior between the two ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! We test the assertion that a consequence of voluntarily adopting International Accounting Standards (IAS) is the enhanced ability to attract foreign capital. Using a unique database that reports firm-level holdings of over 25,000 mutual funds from around the world, our multivariate tests find that average foreign mutual fund ownership is significantly higher among IAS adopters. We also find that IAS adopters in poorer information environments and with lower visibility have higher levels of foreign investment, consistent with firms using IAS adoption to provide more information and/or information in a more familiar form to foreign investors. Taken together, our findings are consistent with voluntary IAS adoption reducing home bias among foreign investors and thereby improving capital allocation efficiency. Information Ecology refers to the consideration and better understanding of information theory, telecommunications systems development, human perception and cognition, within the larger context of ecological systems and of our relationship to the surrounding environment. We are learning to tread more carefully in our physical surrounds, but hardly know how to think about the information environment. We are manipulating the terrestrial electromagnetic spectrum in ways barely understood, and are proceeding to network the planet with progress is our most important product entrepreneurial zeal. ...
Downloadable! We investigate bidder collusion in one-sided ascending price auctions without communication. If bidding rules in an English-type auction allow bidders to match each others bids, collusion can be sustained as a Nash equilibrium of a one-shot auction game. Our earlier experiments show that in common value auctions with complete information, collusion does occur and is sustainable even when bidders cannot explicitly coordinate their strategies. In this study, we investigate the robustness of bidders collusive behavior in private values, private information environments. We find that collusion still occurs as long as the bidders gains from collusion are high.

Victor Gavin, the U.S. Navys program executive officer for enterprise information systems, has pointed to network security and visibility as his top priorities as he continues to work with his counterparts and other government agencies.. Gavin told C4ISR & Networks Barry Rosenberg in an interview published Wednesday that with majority of the Navys networks already consolidated, the service is collaborating with the Defense Information Systems Agency to provide visibility into the Navys data and network.. He said he is looking into the joint regional security stacks program alongside his offices support for the Joint Information Environment.. A big part of the [JRSS] is providing that visibility and the analytics necessary for folks to use.. He also noted the difference of the Navys PEO-EIS from those of other military branches in enterprise IT acquisition as it follows a commercial service delivery model to modernize its networks and systems.. The conflict in Syria has become the most documented crime base in human history. Although the outside world was largely ignorant of the 1982 Hama massacre, information about todays events on and off the Syrian battlefield is immediately disseminated around the globe through formal and informal media and social networks. From the beginning of the uprising, and in real-time, citizen journalists wielding smartphones from the grassroots began uploading videos and photographs of the revolution, the governments crackdown, and the ensuing armed conflict at a rate never before seen in previous conflicts. Because the current information environment is increasingly internet-based and digital, human rights advocates have had to update their collection, storage, authentication, and analytical protocols. NGOs are thus exfiltrating regime documents, taking witness/victim testimonials remotely on new communications platforms, scrubbing social media sites for potential evidence, digitizing gigabytes of data ...
ii. This is a group exercise. The students will be grouped into 3 or 4. First, each group will pick a real or hypothetical digital library in any context. Since they need to find practice users (at least 1 per each group members) who may be interested in using the digital library, it would be easier if they chose an existing digital library and have interviews with people who have experiences using it. On the other hand, they could imagine that they plan to build a digital library for a specific target group (e.g., children, students, health professionals, film makers, movie goers, etc) and interview the target groups information seeking behavior patterns ...

Diverse datasets in the area of Digital Musicology expose complementary information describing works, composers, performers, and wider historical and cultural contexts. Interlinking across such datasets enables new digital methods of scholarly investigation. Such bridging presents challenges when working with legacy tabular or relational datasets that do not natively facilitate linking and referencing to and from external sources. Here, we present pragmatic approaches in turning such legacy datasets into linked data.InConcert is a research collaboration exemplifying these approaches. In this paper, we describe and build on this resource, which is comprised of distinct digital libraries focusing on performance data and on concert ephemera. These datasets were merged with each other and opened up for enrichment from other sources on the Web via conversion to RDF. We outline the main features of the constituent datasets, describe conversion workflows, and perform a comparative analysis. Our findings
