Wed 15th November (1-2pm): Hardy Seminar Room 1 (Hardy Building). Dr Shirley Brook (BGU) The Social Networks and Information Environment of Nineteenth Century Agricultural Improvement. There was great zeal for Improvement in nineteenth-century farming circles. Progress was fuelled and facilitated by the proliferation of farming publications and increasing opportunities for social exchange afforded not only by membership of agricultural societies but also attendance at their shows. The influence of such media on both the farmers and the landowners, whose activities shaped the rural landscape, will be considered in this talk.. This chapter shows how outward migration has transformed the close-knit social environment and eroded the social foundations for the performance of indigenous relation-based institutions in some Chinese villages. Outward migration induces changes in villagers information environment, their responses to possible social sanctions, and perceptions of public authority as well as normative orientations toward collective interests, long-term relationships, and conflict avoidance. Such changes are systematically examined by the use of discrete choice models that combine the 2008 Asian Barometer Survey Mainland China Survey and the 2008 National Village Survey. A case study on changes in the social environment of a village since the Peoples Commune era is presented. This case study offers some qualitative and longitudinal evidence of how the social foundations for the effective performance of indigenous relation-based institutions in the village have gradually eroded due to the transformation in the villages

Proposals due: Nov. 27, 2010. http://www.mediatrans.ca. Ubiquitous and indispensible, media technologies have taken on an epistemological or even ontological significance: we learn what we know, and we become what we are, through print, TV, digital, mobile and other communications. "No part of the world, no human activity," as Sonia Livingstone says, "is untouched…. Societies worldwide are being reshaped, for better or for worse, by changes in the global media and information environment." Seeing media as a lens or even as an a priori condition for understanding historical, social and cultural change has become increasingly prevalent and urgent on both sides of the Atlantic. However, with some notable exceptions, this work has been developing independently, producing a wide-ranging if fruitful heterogeneity. On the one side are the interdisciplinary and theoretically-engaged Medienwissenschaften (media studies), and on the other, work developing out of the Toronto school and a variety of ...
Throughout the long history of industrial and academic research, many microbes have been isolated, characterized and preserved (whenever possible) in culture collections. With the steady accumulation in observational data of biodiversity as well as microbial sequencing data, bio-resource centers have to function as data and information repositories to serve academia, industry, and regulators on behalf of and for the general public. Hence, the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM) started to take its responsibility for constructing an effective information environment that would promote and sustain microbial research data activities, and bridge the gaps currently present within and outside the microbiology communities. Strain catalogue information was collected from collections by online submission. We developed tools for automatic extraction of strain numbers and species names from various sources, including Genbank, Pubmed, and SwissProt. These new tools connect strain catalogue information with
COLLEGE STATION "" The more you know the less you care "" at least that seems to be the case with global warming. A telephone survey of 1,093 Americans by two Texas A&M University political scientists and a former colleague indicates that trend, as explained in their recent article in the peer-reviewed journal Risk Analysis. "More informed respondents both feel less personally responsible for global warming, and also show less concern for global warming," states the article, titled "Personal Efficacy, the Information Environment, and Attitudes toward Global Warming and Climate Change in the USA.". The study showed high levels of confidence in scientists among Americans led to a decreased sense of responsibility for global warming.. The diminished concern and sense of responsibility flies in the face of awareness campaigns about climate change, such as in the movies An Inconvenient Truth and Ice Age: The Meltdown and in the mainstream medias escalating emphasis on the trend.. The research was ...
Downloadable! This paper theoretically and empirically explores the effects of insurance parameters and a complementary information environment on patient´s primary prevention activity in the context of a managed care organisation. The theoretical model is based on a principal-agent setting in which the patient is acting as an agent in deciding about his preventive effort. Both for the patient and for the insurer the information distribution about prevention efforts is diluted. Hence, the theoretical results reflect the impact of insurance parameters as well as complementary information settings. The empirical investigation sheds the light on the patient´s prevention decision in the case of smoking. This depends on age effects, education, working time and health status. The research also stresses the relationship between monetary incentive schemes and individual behaviour as well as the influence of additional information schemes. In addition to the theoretical results, there is an evidence that

Purpose: This study empirically analyzes how users access information resources and evaluate and use information, in the information environment of a college library where physical information resources and digital information resources are mixed. In searching such resources, it is important to clarify the conditions that affect the search performance. We focus on whether clarifying the conditions before searching influences the search behavior or not. Methods: We conducted a search experiment with 44 college students and empirically examined their processes of searching electronic and physical information resources within the library. In this experiment, the subjects were divided into two groups: one was assigned the task of investigating"keywords"and"information resources" s search conditions before searching, and the other was not. We examined the following two aspects: 1)behavioral characteristics and patterns of using information resources, and 2)differences in behavior between the two ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! We test the assertion that a consequence of voluntarily adopting International Accounting Standards (IAS) is the enhanced ability to attract foreign capital. Using a unique database that reports firm-level holdings of over 25,000 mutual funds from around the world, our multivariate tests find that average foreign mutual fund ownership is significantly higher among IAS adopters. We also find that IAS adopters in poorer information environments and with lower visibility have higher levels of foreign investment, consistent with firms using IAS adoption to provide more information and/or information in a more familiar form to foreign investors. Taken together, our findings are consistent with voluntary IAS adoption reducing home bias among foreign investors and thereby improving capital allocation efficiency. Information Ecology refers to the consideration and better understanding of information theory, telecommunications systems development, human perception and cognition, within the larger context of ecological systems and of our relationship to the surrounding environment. We are learning to tread more carefully in our physical surrounds, but hardly know how to think about the information environment. We are manipulating the terrestrial electromagnetic spectrum in ways barely understood, and are proceeding to network the planet with progress is our most important product entrepreneurial zeal. ...
Victor Gavin, the U.S. Navys program executive officer for enterprise information systems, has pointed to network security and visibility as his top priorities as he continues to work with his counterparts and other government agencies.. Gavin told C4ISR & Networks Barry Rosenberg in an interview published Wednesday that with majority of the Navys networks already consolidated, the service is collaborating with the Defense Information Systems Agency to provide visibility into the Navys data and network.. He said he is looking into the joint regional security stacks program alongside his offices support for the Joint Information Environment.. "A big part of the [JRSS] is providing that visibility and the analytics necessary for folks to use.". He also noted the difference of the Navys PEO-EIS from those of other military branches in enterprise IT acquisition as it follows a commercial service delivery model to modernize its networks and systems.. "[What] weve learned . . . is that ...
ii. This is a group exercise. The students will be grouped into 3 or 4. First, each group will pick a real or hypothetical digital library in any context. Since they need to find practice users (at least 1 per each group members) who may be interested in using the digital library, it would be easier if they chose an existing digital library and have interviews with people who have experiences using it. On the other hand, they could imagine that they plan to build a digital library for a specific target group (e.g., children, students, health professionals, film makers, movie goers, etc) and interview the target groups information seeking behavior patterns ...

This paper focuses on establishing test automation as a service in the software development organization at the outset, with the importance being given especially to the testing group. Test automation should direct its efforts to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the manual testing process by providing Quality Test Automation services. Test Automation should always aim at supplementing the manual testing to quickly assess the quality of the application under test through the execution of quality test automation suites. The building blocks of test automation services are discussed thoroughly to successfully finish test automation projects.
The artifact code, everything after r1, is the part that make this URI a trusty URI. The first character in this code (R) is to identify the module. In the example, R indicates that this trusty URI was generated on a RDF graph. The second character (A) is to specify any version of this module. The remaining characters (5..0) represents the hash value on the content. All hash values are generated by SHA-256 algorithm. I think it would be more useful to allow users to select any preferred cryptographic hash function instead of enforcing a single hash function. This might result in adding more characters to the artifact code to represent the selected hash function. InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), for example, uses Multihash as mechanism to prefix the resulting hash value with an id that maps to a particular hash function. Similar to trusty URIs, resources in the IPFS network are addressed based on hash values calculated on the content. For instance, the first two characters "Qm" in the IPFS ...
