In February 2015, the MLA Board transitioned from a traditional five-year strategic plan format and yearly Presidential Priorities to a strategic process that establishes consistency and continuity in MLAs drive for change. Today, strategic goals set by the board focus on areas requiring significant change and board attention, generally across multiple organizational functions of the organization. Goals are organized in a rolling strategic plan, with goals of varying duration rolling on and off at the May annual meeting.. Through end of August, we will publish a post on each goal to highlight what has been achieved (or remains on the to do list), and how the results positively impact you and the profession. Spoiler alert: Members can now view MLAs strategic plan annual report.. The board concluded the What MLA Does goal, which looked at MLAs audiences, sections and special interest groups (SIGs), annual meeting activities, publications, international presence, headquarter operations, ...
We inspected Ann Charlton Lodge on 18 November 2015. This was an unannounced inspection which meant that the staff and provider did not know that we would be visiting.. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the service is run.. Internet-Draft Benchmarking Containerized Infra March 2020 page should be set to at least 1G byte. In the VM-based infrastructure, the host OS and the hypervisor can configure a huge page depending on the guest OS. For example, guest VMs with the Linux OS requires to set huge pages at least 1G bytes. Even though it is a huge size, since this memory page is for not only its running application but also guest OS operation processes, actual memory pages for application is smaller. In the containerized infrastructure, the container is isolated in the application level and administrators can set huge pages more granular level (e.g. Kubernetes allows to use of 512M bytes huge pages for the container as default values). Moreover, this page is dedicated to the application but another process so application use page more efficient way. Therefore, even if the page size is smaller than the VM, the effect of the huge page is large, which leads to the utilization of physical memory and the increasing number ...

If a piece of toast covered with jelly falls to the floor, which side will it land on? This was the question we broke into groups to answer as part of our Science Ambassador training. As a librarian, I am used to referring to reference sources, print or online, to answer such questions. But that choice was not available, as trainers from DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education), the Museum of Science in Boston, and WGBH wanted us to learn by doing. We broke into small groups and used the materials at hand, including index cards and paper clips, to form models to test our theories and then shared back with the full group. I hadnt had quite that much fun at a professional development event in a long time, which gave me pause to reflect on the obvious fact that if we as educators are embracing a playful, curious, animated approach to learning in our PD sessions, our students will surely benefit by that strong level of vitality and enthusiasm for learning that we carry back into ...

My friend Jerry from Detroit sent me a packet of photos this week which she took of San Antonio and us when we were there for the Medical Library Association in mid-May. It is a lovely city, and they really cater to tourists--must be one of their biggest industries. They had a river that was forever flooding and during the Depression the WPA corralled it in stone walls, into a lovely river walk, and it has been extended to other areas. The city business sort of goes on above it, and you never see the traffic or hear it when walking along the river. We did a lot of walking and picture taking; I attended meetings, and an architect (friend of a friend) took us on a city tour and we got to see some of the more unusual things the ordinary tourist doesnt see. We also visited an artists colony and bought a nice watercolor of the Alamo. One morning the Majors company took us on a long hike through the King William restored residential section where we saw all these fabulous homes, and they gave us ...

The Vermont Library Association is concerned about how these cuts will affect libraries statewide and the services they provide to all Vermonters. The Department of Libraries provides a strong network across the state and is instrumental in pulling Vermonters together, whether facilitating statewide awareness of projects such as Vermont Health Connect and broadband internet access or providing resources to libraries in times of crisis, as they helped libraries become community centers of information and support for victims of Tropical Storm Irene. We urge lawmakers to take this opportunity to fully acquaint themselves with the work of the Department of Libraries and of Vermonts public libraries, so they can fully understand the important contributions that libraries make to early childhood development, literacy, technology, economic development, and the health and well-being of Vermonters ...

The following is from the book Emil Seletz, Sculptor. All through my medical training I have always been inspired by the great physician. The father of the first truly great volume on medicine is by Sir William Osler. While in Baltimore in 1937, I visited with sculptor Hans Schuller, and he related to me his making of a portrait bust of Sir William Osler. This was sometime in early 1905. It was his custom in modeling a portrait bust of a male subject to use the Greek style of finishing with the naked unclothed chest. Mrs. Osler wanted Oslers accustomed wing collar and elegant dress, but Hans Schuller would not agree to her request. Dr. Osler looked quite young at that time. Mrs. Osler refused to accept the bust (eventually acquired by Johns Hopkins). When beginning the portrait bust of Dr. Osler, my good friend Dr. Elmer Belt, the urologist and universally famous for his Leonardo DaVinci collection, procured for me some 30 or more photographs of Sir William Osler as well as copies of drawings ...

The February meeting of the Librarians and Friends Leisure Reading Club will be meeting on Wednesday, Feb 15. at 6pm at the Barnes & Noble on the corner of E St, NW and 12th St., NW, just down from Metro Center. We decided to skip the obvious topics of romance or red or…. that might be appropriate for Valentines and instead we chose to go with more of a Presidents Day theme. The topic is books that focus on leaders. So this would be any fiction or non-fiction story of someone who was a major leader in their society or culture. So any books about Horatio Nelson or Napoleon or Sulieman the Magnificent (the Crusades) or certainly any American President. It could also be someone who was a leader of a movement like Martin Luther King or Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormons) or Frank Lloyd Wright or Cesar Chavez. There are a lot of choices and we hope that if you read one and arent able to attend the meeting, you will still share your choice with us for inclusion on the monthly review of books ...

Are you at a time in your professional life when youd like someone to call for advice or to be a sounding board? Someone who can help you shape your professional development or even your career? A mentoring relationship is a relationship of choice between two people, one who wants to see the world more widely, and another who has insight to share. The commitment that the mentor and mentee or protégé make to one another can be as simple as an initial meeting and followup IM or phone chats, or more formal with regular in person meetings. We act as mentors, and pair up folks as well! In 2001, Susan Babb paired YA librarian Beth Gallaway with new childrens librarian in North Reading, Christi Showman. Christis job was just part-time, and her heart belonged to YA services. Beth is now a YS consultant, thanks in part to Susans mentoring, and Christi now has the job of her dreams as a YA librarian (in Beths region, no less ...

Member Spotlight: Karlene Jennings. By Elizabeth Illig. Junior League of Greensboro member Karlene Jennings was recently appointed to the National Library Associations Philanthropy Advisory Group. Karlene will serve for two terms, where she will advance fundraising efforts in support of the associations mission.. The American Library Association has nearly 60,000 members and represents all these libraries in the U.S., she says. So our goal is to undergird the financial support for the association and for its core mission of serving libraries and those who use libraries.. Karlene believes that libraries are meant to serve their communities. She loves to read, but that isnt the only thing that attracted her to library fundraising. Libraries are so much more than just reading. Theyre community spaces and makers spaces. Whether its an academic library or a public library, to me the importance of moving it forward is this is where people can dream and hope and discover.. No stranger to ...
The ALA Archives staff found a picture of Leonard Nimoy (March 26, 1931 - February 27, 2015) in our Record Series 13/5/15. ALA conferences have a long tradition of distinguished guests and author signings, and Nimoy was at the 1976 ALA Annual Conference, signing pictures for his newly released memoir I am Not Spock. Apparently he got tired of smiling for the camera.. This picture, and a write up of the event, was featured in American Libraries Vol. 7, No. 7 (Jul. - Aug., 1976), p. 473. Copyright of this image is currently unknown and is provided in low resolution.. ...

The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) has allowed students to access online resources. However, other databases are available that provide digitized book content to meet curriculum needs of schools. Most of the materials that are digitized in the Gale databases available in TEL have periodical content. There is a federated search that is now available to search selected databases. The TEL database that has materials for younger students is Kids InfoBits. Since many students are not reading on grade level, there is a need for digitized content on a variety of reading levels, including easier reading. Although periodicals are the genre for scientific research, school assignments often require students to research general factual information about a subject rather than current event articles. Databases were selected for preview based on the following criteria: search results using the same terms, quality of content, ease of use, appearance of screens, and special features. The search results had ...
For each class section starting out on the project, Annie Figliola introduced the contents of the Makerspace cart and the various ways the materials could be used to reproduce effects student were trying to achieve. For example, she explained how the colors for the modeling clay were selected to approximate glaze colors of the period, also including flesh-tones for figure sculptures and neutral colors for re-creating unglazed clay sculptures. Two specific colors, red and green, were chosen for students who might want to re-create lacquerware and jade objects coming into prominence in the period. She chose watercolor pencils that could be used both for a colored pencil effect or with a water wash to create a watercolor effect common in the paintings of the period. I was especially impressed with the level of detail she brought to the project by adding gum erasers to the supply list: because red ink seals are often used on Asian calligraphy works and paintings of the period, these were purchased ...

For some reason Charltons Silver Age adventures of Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett (archaeologist), have turned out to be the most difficult for me to get my hands on. My searches online havent turned up digital copies/scans (on the other hand Ive scored many of Foxs Golden Age adventures in digital format), I havent found much on eBay (mostly Ted Kord issues, which I have), and my local comic shop doesnt have any back issues...and they have a fantastic back issue selection. Luckily, while going through some old comic boxes Id left at my moms house...some of the very first I collected, I came across this, 1965s Charlton Comics Blue Beetle #52. According to the price tag still on the bag I paid $6.00 for this way back when, big money for me at a time when most books I was buying were $0.75-1.00 each! ...

Oxford University Press has analyzed 120 years of census data and showed some trends in librarianship. This is pretty interesting data with lots of graphs and charts! View it here!. The U.S. Census first collected data on librarians in 1880, a year after the founding of the American Library Association. They only counted 636 librarians nationwide. Indeed, one respondent reported on his census form that he was the Librarian of Congress. The U.S. Census, which became organized as a permanent Bureau in 1902, can be used to track the growth of the library profession. The number of librarians grew over the next hundred years, peaking at 307,273 in 1990. Then, the profession began to shrink, and as of 2009, it had dropped by nearly a third to 212,742. The data enable us to measure the growth, the gender split in this profession known to be mostly female, and to explore other divides in income and education, as they changed over time.. We examined a number of socioeconomic trends over the duration, ...
