New titles recently added to the University Librarys collection include:. Accounting and the global economy after Sarbanes-Oxley. Don E. Garner. (Main Stax HF 5686 .C7 G27 2008).. The Perelman School of Medicine was founded in 1765. For nearly 150 years, the physicians and students relied on the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. In 1931, the rotunda of the Medical Laboratories Building (now the Morgan Building) was set aside for a Medical School Library. (The name was later changed to Biomedical Library.) The collection was formed by the merger of several departmental libraries and the personal collections of several faculty members. Acquisitions for the Medical Library focused on the basic sciences and research needs of the Penn medical community. It was understood that the clinical information needs of the staff were handled by the HUP departmental libraries and, from 1952, by the consolidated HUP Library. In 1987, the HUP library was closed and its unique holdings were transferred to the Biomedical Library. As a consequence, the Biomedical Library was charged with providing a clinical as well as a research collection. Since the early 90s emphasis ...

Most of the respondents said their library did not have a dedicated trainer or staff development coordinator at their library. The 18% of libraries with one or more full-time trainers were from libraries that serve larger population. For example, 38% of libraries serving 100 thousand to 500 thousand people and 32% of libraries serving over 500 thousand people have full-time trainers.. A couple interesting notes to come out of the question about in-house training: at least one library focuses training on new staff with current staff only receiving training when policies and procedures change. Another library pointed out that they have staff members train on their expertise, from example youth services coordinators train on youth topics and human resources coordinates safety training, onboarding, and other system-wide concerns.. Libraries do bring in outside trainers, though again this varies by library size. Larger libraries are more likely to already bring in outside trainers or to plan to in ...

CHAPTER XXXIII. 331 Some uneducated Hindu heard people speak of the day of such a nychthemeron in the north, and of its night in the south. In connection with these elements he determined the two parts of the year by the two halves of the zodiac, the one which ascends from the winter solstice, called the northern, and the one which descends from the summer solstice, called the southern. Then he identified the day of this nychthemeron with the ascending half, and its night with the descending half. All of which he has eternised in his books. Not much better is what the author of the Vishnu- Dharma says :-"The half beginning with Capricornus is the day of the Asura, i.e. the Danavas, and their night begins with the sign of Cancer." Previously he had said: "The half beginning with Aries is the day of the Deva." This author acted without any under¬ standing of the subject, for he simply confounds the two poles with each other (for according to this theory the half of the suns revolution, beginning ...
It has always been important for authors and researchers to maintain and present accurate records of their work and experience. In this digital age, an author can achieve such record-keeping by using a persistent digital identifier, a number associated with a particular author that remains with him or her, regardless of changes in discipline, research project, organization, or position. ORCID, a not-for-profit-organization working to make it easier to connect research results to authors, has stepped in to provide just such a service. To date, they have registered over 2.5 million ORCID iDs for their users, and this number grows daily.. ORCID first opened its registry allowing researchers to register ORCID iDs and link their works to their iD in 2012, and the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) was one of the first federal organizations to embrace the ORCID concept. In spring 2013, OSTI moved to help make it even easier for researchers to employ ORCID ...

The Kellam Library Enrichment Fund was created to bring scholars and lecturers to campus to address matters of interest to the Libraries faculty. Requests for funding should be sent to the Chair of PDRC, who will in turn consult with the rest of the committee. Lucy Campbell and Barbara Opar, column editors. Column by David Eifler, Librarian, Environmental Design Library, UC Berkeley and Maya Gervits, Director, Littman Architecture Library, NJIT. (Re)Claiming Space: Two Subject Libraries at the Heart of the Academic Enterprise. The development of digital technology has led to predictions that the library as a physical space will cease to exist. However, the physical world of libraries has not been replaced by a digital one, rather they are developing in parallel. Architect Geoffrey Freeman acknowledges that "Whereas the Internet has tended to isolate people, the library, as a physical place, has done just the opposite." Library scholar Michael Gorman notes that among other things, libraries are valued for being a focal point of a community, the heart of the university, the collective memory of a research institution, a place in which all are welcome and a source of power through knowledge.. University art and architecture libraries are no different and ...

Our objective is to provide free access for all scientists to the old zoological literature, particularly to those important publications where name-bearing zoological taxa were originally described. The literature is digitized in image format by the SUB Göttingen (our university library). In a first 2-year period (2003-2005) financed by the DFG we have digitized nearly all taxonomically relevant zoological literature from the beginnings until 1770 (about 400 works). Only some 5 % of the literature is not present in Göttingen and we are currently trying to obtain some works from other libraries. In a second 2-year-period we will try to cover the period from 1770 to 1800. Monographic works and journal articles shall both be digitized. The AnimalBase database is primarily established to link the old literature with the names of the animals described therein. We have continuously gone through the old works, from 1757 onwards, and entered all correctly described new animal names (genera and ...

Certain patients will receive a group of drugs called thrombolytics. These medications can rapidly dissolve blood clots. They are often given by IV, but can be delivered directly to the arteries where the blood clot is. These medications need to be given within hours after the start of symptoms to be effective. That is why it is important to get medical help right away if stroke symptoms develop.. Aspirin and other medications that decrease the risk of blood clot formation may be recommended after immediate care is done. These medications may prevent future strokes from occurring.. To help manage other health issues and decrease the risk of future strokes the doctor may recommend medication to:. ...

In the September of 2009, I went off to university in Plymouth. It should have been the start of an exciting new chapter of my life, but Mum had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. "In January the following year, I started having really serious headaches and saw various different GPs, who all diagnosed migraine and offered me painkillers. They all thought that it was down to the stress of my first year of university and didnt think it was anything serious. "As my headaches became worse, I saw a total of 11 different medical professionals including GPs, A&E doctors and opticians, who diagnosed me with a variety things from migraines to sinus problems. I was even given some glasses. "Then the headaches became even more unbearable, so I rang Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and begged for help. After being seen by a doctor there, I was given an emergency MRI scan that revealed I had a brain tumour.. "I immediately had an operation to insert a shunt into my brain to drain the fluid which had been ...
When a donated set of heart and lungs becomes available, your transplant team will contact you to arrange transport to take you to the transplant centre as quickly as possible.. After being admitted, youll be quickly re-assessed to check you havent developed any new medical problems that could make the transplant less likely to be successful.. At the same time, another surgical team will check the donated heart and lungs to make sure theyre in good condition and suitable for transplantation.. An incision will be made in your chest so the surgeon can remove your heart and lungs. The donated heart and ...
