Patients and Methods: Surgically managed burn patients admitted between 2010-14 were included. Operative stay was defined as the time from admission until the last operation, postoperative stay as the time from the last operation until discharge. The difference in variation was analysed with F-test. A retrospective review of medical records was done to explore reasons for extended postoperative stay. Multivariable regression was used to assess factors associated with operative stay and postoperative stay.less thanbr /greater thanResults: Operative stay/TBSA% showed less variation than total duration/TBSA% (F test = 2.38, pless than0.01). The size of the burn, and the number of operations, were the independent factors that influenced operative stay (R2 0.65). Except for the size of the burn other factors were associated with duration of postoperative stay: wound related, psychological and other medical causes, advanced medical support, and accommodation arrangements before discharge, of which the ...
On multivariable lineal regression analyses, the study period (pre-IMCU-CS/post-IMCU-CS) remained significantly independently associated with a shorter ICU (standardized beta value -0077; 95% confidence interval, -0.259 to -0.038; P=.008) and in-hospital mean LoS (standardized beta value -0.066; 95% confidence interval, -0.135 to -0.016; P=.01). Likewise, the study period (pre-IMCU-CS/post-IMCU-CS) did not remain significantly independently associated with in-hospital mortality or 30-day readmission. The main cause of cardiac ICU readmission during hospitalization was respiratory failure; there was no difference in the incidence of cardiac ICU readmission between the study groups (P=.93, Table 4). The mean LoS in the IMCU-CS was 3.5±2.6 days. An analysis of clinical outcomes showed no significant differences in in-hospital mortality (4.9% vs 3.5%, P=.28) or 30-day readmission rate (4.3% vs 4.2%; P=.89) for pre-IMCU-CS compared with post-IMCU-CS, respectively.. In the pre-IMCU-CS period, only ...
Addressing issue of crowding in an Emergency Department (ED) typically takes the form of process engineering or single-faceted queue management strategies such as demand restriction, queue prioritization or staffing the ED. This work provides an integrated framework to manage queue dynamically from both demand and supply perspectives. More precisely, we introduce intelligent dynamic patient prioritization strategies to manage the demand concurrently with dynamic resource adjustment policies to manage supply. Our framework allows decision-makers to select both the demand-side and supply-side strategies to suit the needs of their ED. We verify through a simulation that such a framework improves the patients length-of-stay in the ED without restricting the demand.

Healthcare | Unipart Expert Practices | Read about the benefits we have delivered to clients in terms of reducing patient length of stay in hospital
Information about how long people stay in care homes is needed to plan services, as length of stay is a determinant of future demand for care. As length of stay is proportional to cost, estimates are also needed to inform analysis of the long-term cost effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing admissions to care homes. But estimates are rarely available due to the cost of repeatedly surveying individuals. We used administrative data from three local authorities in England to estimate the length of publicly-funded care homes stays beginning in 2005 and 2006. Stays were classified into nursing home, permanent residential and temporary residential. We aggregated successive placements in different care home providers and, by linking to health data, across periods in hospital. The largest group of stays (38.9%) were those intended to be temporary, such as for rehabilitation, and typically lasted 4 weeks. For people admitted to permanent residential care, median length of stay was 17.9 months. Women
Diabetes is not always the main reason for a hospitalization, but the researchers found that people with diabetes end up paying an average of $2,200 more for their stay in the hospital than people without the disease.. RELATED: Why we got fatter during the fat-free food boom. Dr. Francine Kaufman is a diabetes expert at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. She was not involved with the study, but she explained why such stays are more expensive.. "Its all complicated by the fact that somebody has diabetes," she said. "Glucose has to be managed. The metabolic status of the patient is at greater risk, and its a more prolonged hospitalization when they do come ...

Objective: To assess the changes in incidence, length of stay (LOS) and costs, of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbations (AE) between 2002 and 2010.. Methods: We included all the pediatric patients (younger than 15 years old) hospitalized for AE between 2002 and 2010 (ICD9-CM codes 493.0x-493.9x). The data were collected from the National Hospital Discharge Database (entire population). We compared the incidence, LOS and costs per patient of this population in two points in the time 2002 and 2010.. Results: We included a total of 12,038 patients. Overall crude incidence decreased from 20.5 to 18.7 AE per 100.000 inhabitants from 2002 to 2010 (p,0.05). There was no difference for sex. The mean LOS was 3.71 (SD 2.28) days in 2001 and decreased progressively to 3.16 (SD 2.11) in 2010 (p,0.05). During the study period, the mean cost per patient decreased from 1558.53 (SD 443.63) to 1378.41 (SD 472.71) euros (p,0.05).. Conclusion: Our results suggest a decrease in the incidence of hospital ...

Steps Toward a Smooth Hospital Stay : You know I was recently reflecting on my last hospital stay It began something like this OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT STABBING PAIN IN MY CHEST ACK ITS RUNNING DOWN MY ARM GGGGGGGGGGAHHHHHHHHHHHI had a heart attack a goddamned myocardial infarction It fuckin HURTSo I got to stay in the hospital for a few days while the doctors reminded me not to be a fat fuck and to quit
Why would I use median length of stay instead of average?Finding the median length of stay rather than the average helps give a picture of the "middle" value, which is less affected by extreme values that may not really be individual outliers. Finding the median is actually finding the number in the middle. In the sample below the first value represents the longest stay and would pull the average up. The median is found by lining up all the numbers in order and finding the one in the middle. If there is an even number of values in the list then two will be in the middle. In that case, the median is found by adding those two together and dividing by two. So for the sample below we would write: 1,3,4,5,5,13,18. The number in the middle is 5, so that is the median. Not surprisingly, it is shorter than the average, which is 7. You can use an Excel spreadsheet to help you find the median.. ...

Tomorrow is my clinic day where I meet with my team to discuss the strategy for this next and FINAL chemo round. I think they will keep me on the antibiotics since they worked pretty well last time, but switch out the amoxicillan because I broke out in minor hives nearly every day. I told them when I was in the hospital that I could handle the hives because the antibiotics helped my other symptoms. I usually took a benadryl and the hives went away. I hope they keep me on antibiotics and maybe I can stay out of the hospital or repeat my short hospital stay again. I dont want any surprises on this last round and would prefer a repeat performance of round five. Im not even sure how to feel on this last round. I am relieved that the end is in sight, but I also know Ive got at least one more potential miserable IV stick in my future. Send your prayers my way for staying out of the hospital OR for having Okee be the nurse who starts my IV because she was so good last time ...

The stays are amazingly light and stiff! Suggesting high quality, thin wall, tubular steel. Complete with plastic mudguards they weigh exactly 2.5lbs. The finish appears to be tough, gloss black, stove enamel in remarkably good condition. The Bluemels Olympic mudguards are of a sturdy gauge of plastic while remaining amazingly light. Smart, original reflectors are present. The stays and guards are held together with copper rivets. I havent attempted to polish them to confirm this but they certainly look like copper. Similar in colour to the Brooks saddle rivets ...

The basic unit of observation is the discharge abstract or the record of an inpatients stay in a psychiatrici or general hospital. The discharge abstract is completed at separation (discharge or death). Records are grouped into fiscal years based on the inpatients date of separation from the hospital. If an individual was hospitalized more than once in the same fiscal year, a separate record for each stay was submitted. Hence the basic units of observation are events, not unique patients. If an inpatient was admitted prior to the beginning of a fiscal year, the days stayed prior to the year of separation are included in the total days stayed for that event. ...
