Studies on leisure time physical activity as risk factor or protective factor for knee or hip osteoarthritis (OA) show divergent results. Longitudinal prospective studies are needed to clarify the association of physical activity with future OA. The aim was to explore in a prospective population-based cohort study the influence of leisure time physical activity on severe knee or hip OA, defined as knee or hip replacement due to OA. Leisure time physical activity was reported by 28320 participants (mean age 58 years (SD 7.6), 60% women) at baseline. An overall leisure time physical activity score, taking both duration and intensity of physical activities into account, was created. The most commonly reported activities were also used for analysis. The incidence of knee or hip replacement due to OA over 11 years was monitored by linkage with the Swedish hospital discharge register. Coxs proportional hazards model (crude and adjusted for potential confounding factors) was used to assess the incidence of
Objective We examined the association between job stress and leisure-time physical inactivity, adjusting for individual time-invariant attributes.. Methods We used data from a Japanese occupational cohort survey, which included 31 025 observations of 9871 individuals. Focusing on the evolution of job stress and leisure-time physical inactivity within the same individual over time, we employed fixed-effects logistic models to examine the association between job stress and leisure-time physical inactivity. We compared the results with those in pooled cross-sectional models and fixed-effects ordered logistic models.. Results Fixed-effects models showed that the odds ratio (OR) of physical inactivity were 22% higher for those with high strain jobs [high demands/low control; OR 1.22, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.03-1.43] and 17% higher for those with active jobs (high demands/high control; OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.02-1.34) than those with low strain jobs (low demands/high control). The models also ...
Americans who live in parts of Appalachia and the South are the least likely to be physically active in their leisure time, according to estimates released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In many counties in those regions, more than 29 percent of adults reported getting no physical activity or exercise other than at their regular job.. The 2004-2008 estimates, posted online at www.cdc.gov/diabetes/statistics, provide county-level estimates for leisure-time physical inactivity for all U.S. counties. Areas where residents are most likely to be active in their free time are the West Coast, Colorado, Minnesota and parts of the Northeast.. States where residents are the least likely to be physically active during leisure time are Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee. In those states, physical inactivity rates are 29.2 percent or greater for more than 70 percent of the counties.. A 2008 CDC survey found that 25.4 percent of U.S. adults did not ...
Unfavorable work characteristics, such as low job control and too high or too low job demands, have been suggested to increase the likelihood of physical inactivity during leisure time, but this has not been verified in large-scale studies. The authors combined individual-level data from 14 European cohort studies (baseline years from 19851988 to 20062008) to examine the association between unfavorable work characteristics and leisure-time physical inactivity in a total of 170,162 employees (50 women; mean age, 43.5 years). Of these employees, 56,735 were reexamined after 29 years. In cross-sectional analyses, the odds for physical inactivity were 26 higher (odds ratio 1.26, 95 confidence interval: 1.15, 1.38) for employees with high-strain jobs (low control/high demands) and 21 higher (odds ratio 1.21, 95 confidence interval: 1.11, 1.31) for those with passive jobs (low control/low demands) compared with employees in low-strain jobs (high control/low demands). In prospective analyses restricted ...

This study shows that individual factors such as country of origin and educational level are strong determinants of the proportion of persons with low leisure time physical activity in the neighbourhoods. In the crude model, there were small but significant neighbourhood differences in physical inactivity. After adjustment for a variety of individual factors (age, sex, country of origin, educational level) the neighbourhood differences in physical inactivity disappeared. The social participation variable, measured at the individual level, was significantly associated with physical inactivity, and strongly affected the neighbourhood differences in physical inactivity. The contextual migration variable was not significantly associated with individual physical inactivity, and did not affect the neighbourhood differences in physical inactivity. The results of this study thus suggest that leisure time physical inactivity is mainly affected by individual factors, and that the small neighbourhood ...
Reduced health related quality of life (HRQOL) has been associated with increased mortality in individuals with diabetes. In contrast, increased leisure time physical activity (LTPA) has been associated with reduced mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined relationship of HRQOL and LTPA on mortality and whether high levels of LTPA are associated with reduced risk of mortality in adults with diabetes and inferior HRQOL. We analyzed data from a national sample of adults (18 years or older) with self-reported physician-diagnosed diabetes, who participated in the 2001 National Health Interview Survey in Taiwan (N = 797). A total of 701 participants had complete Short Form 36 (SF-36) and LTPA data and were followed from 2002 to 2008. Participants were divided into 3 groups based on their LTPA: (1) a regularly active group who reported 150 or more min/week of moderate-intensity activity; (2) an intermediately active group who reported engaging in LTPA but did not meet the criterion for
Leisure-time physical activity is associated with longer life expectancy, even at relatively low levels of activity and regardless of body weight, according to researchers at the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In order to determine the number of years of life gained from leisure-time physical activity in adulthood, researchers examined data on more than 650,000 adults, mostly aged 40 and older, who took part in 1 of 6 population-based studies that were designed to evaluate various aspects of cancer risk. After accounting for other factors that could affect life expectancy, the researchers found that life expectancy was 3.4 years longer for people who reported they got the recommend level of physical activity (2.5 hours at moderate intensity/1.25 hours at vigorous intensity each week). People who reported leisure-time physical activity at twice the recommended level gained 4.2 years of life.. The researchers even saw benefit at low levels of activity. ...
AIMS: Increasing income inequalities in leisure time physical inactivity have been reported in the relatively socially equal setting of northern Sweden. The present report seeks to contribute to the literature by exploring the contribution of different factors to the income inequalities in leisure time physical inactivity in northern Sweden.. METHODS: This study was based on the 2014 Health on Equal Terms survey, distributed in the four northernmost counties of Sweden. The analytical sample consisted of 21,000 respondents aged 16-84. Six thematic groups of explanatory variables were used: demographic variables, socioeconomic factors, material resources, family-, psychosocial conditions and functional limitations. Income inequalities in leisure time physical inactivity were decomposed by Wagstaff-type decomposition analysis.. RESULTS: Income inequalities in leisure time physical inactivity were found to be explained to a considerable degree by health-related limitations and unfavourable ...
To study the leisure activities, social participation, and organizational participation of mental patients before hospital admission, a three-part research instrument was developed consisting of a structured interview schedule requesting information on the patients leisure activities, a self-administered questionnaire entitled Survey of Opinions completed by the patient, and a form for compiling demographic data. The sample consisted of 300 newly admitted patients in a state mental hospital, male and female, aged 16 years and over. Data on patients characteristics are presented in 21 tables. Data on leisure activities and organizational participation are presented in 17 additional tables, with breakdowns for sex and age (under or over 30 years). Some major findings were that few patients (under 10%) participated in community-sponsored recreational or adult education or social activities, fewer than 10% participated in church-related activities, and the great majority had very

Obesity and physical inactivity are major public health problems. We studied the associations between measures of adiposity, lean body mass, leisure time physical activity (LTPA), and death in those with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD). Associations between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), percent body fat, lean body mass (assessed with Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry[DEXA]), leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and death were examined using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES 1999-2004). All-cause mortality was ascertained by linkage of NHANES files with the National Death Index. 9,433 non-CKD participants and 2,153 CKD participants who had fat mass measured using DEXA, BMI, WC, LTPA and mortality data were included. After adjusting for demographics, comorbid conditions, kidney function measures, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and sodium intake there was no significant risk for death noted with higher WC, fat mass and BMI in those with and without CKD.
Low and moderate levels of leisure-time physical activity were associated with a 21 percent and 32 percent reduction of suspected cystitis (urinary tract bacterial infections).

In this large prospective study among US men and women who were on average age 73 years at baseline, greater walking, leisure-time activity, and exercise intensity were inversely associated with CHD, stroke (especially ischemic stroke), and total CVD. To our knowledge, this is the first large prospective community-based study including a large number of participants ,70 years and having updated PA over time, to demonstrate independent associations of PA measures with lower incidence of CHD, stroke, and total CVD. Results were robust in a range of sensitivity analyses. When different types of PA were simultaneously evaluated, greater walking and, to a lesser extent, exercise intensity were independently associated with lower risk, whereas leisure-time activity was not independently associated with risk.. With aging, the risk of developing and dying of chronic diseases such as CVD increases dramatically.26 In many countries in the world, the proportion of the population ,60 years is increasing ...
In this thesis I present the results of a literature study, followed by an empirical surrey, regarding the leisure time activities of Zulu adolescents in rural and semi-rural areas of KwaZuhi-Natal along the northeastern seaboard of South Africa. My findings contextualise the above groups socialisation with regard to leisure time activities, home chores, school homework, school sports activities, communal tribal activities and local community events. I document and explain a variety of neighbourhood activities, including ones played during impromptu-organised neighbourhood get togethers. They include games ranging from the mundane to the innovative. I also analyse the annual Zulu Reed Dance Ceremony as a symbolic female rite of passage to womanhood, and various activities that serve as male rite-of-passage activities to manhood. My major finding is that all forms of social behaviour of Zulu rural adolescents - including their leisure time preferences - are informed by a coherent value-belief ...
Dr. Kraus next outlined the body of data available to the subcommittee. At the time of the Surgeon Generals report 7 studies on physical activity and cardiovascular disease were available. For coronary heart disease, 36 studies were available and 14 for stroke. Subsequently there have been 21 observational studies on physical activity. For coronary heart disease there are now 36 observational studies and 22 for stroke. Over the last ten years these studies indicate active men and women generally have fewer cardiovascular disease clinical events, including fatal and non-fatal coronary heart disease and stroke. An emphasis has also been placed on leisure time activity. For amount of dose-response some studies report lower cardiovascular disease event rates for moderate intensity activity. For intensity dose-response most studies, but not all, show a lower cardiovascular event rates with both moderate and vigorous intensity leisure time physical activity, while some only show lower cardiovascular ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! Global self-evaluations of health have proven to be sensitive predictors of morbidity and mortality. Yet researchers have only a limited understanding of how these self-evaluations are reached. This research compares two interpretations of self-rated health, as reflecting either a spontaneous assessment of ones health status and related practices, or an aspect of ones enduring self-concept. Using longitudinal data from successive waves of the National Population Health Survey in Canada (Statistics Canada, 1994-95, 1996-97, NPHS public use microdata documentation. Ottawa, Ontario: Statistics Canada; n=7505), our analysis tests a model of change in self-rated health as predicted by respondents baseline physical and mental health symptoms, social support, leisure physical activity, smoking, body mass index, and 2-yr changes in these characteristics. As in past research, self-rated health was sensitive to improvement or decline in these predictors. Much of the explained
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has introduced a new online tool, Diabetes Interactive Atlases, which provides data for diagnosed diabetes, obesity, and leisure-time physical inactivity at the national, state, and county levels. The new tool also includes interactive motion charts showing trends in the growth of diabetes and obesity throughout the United States and within states.. The tool was launched with the release of CDCs November 15 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which highlights a study that found that the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased in all US states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico between 1995 and 2010. During that time, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased by 50% or more in 42 states, and by 100% or more in 18 states. The states with the largest increases are Oklahoma (226%), Kentucky (158%), Georgia (145%), Alabama (140%), and Washington (135%).. ...

Hence, the purpose of this study is to assess family and friends social support for health-related leisure activities among the elderly. The secondary purpose of the study is to explore the influence of social support on respondents health status and life satisfaction. A cross-sectional survey covering a sample of 75 respondents aged between 60 to 69 years was undertaken. Factors analysis resulted in two distinct ...

The quality of life for 46 stroke survivors under the age of 65 years in a stroke register was studied 4 years after their first stroke. A questionnaire covering four domains of life (working conditions, activities at home, family relationships, and leisure time activities) was used for investigation of the quality of life. The results showed that in spite of a good recovery in terms of discharge from the hospital, activities of daily living, and return to work, the quality of life of most patients (83%) had not been restored to the prestroke level. Deterioration among the several domains of life ranged from 39% to 80%, the lowest being in the domain of activities at home and the highest in the domain of leisure time activities. Hemispheral localization of the lesion, paresis, coordination disturbances, and especially subjective tendency to depression were highly correlated with a deterioration in the quality of life. Dependence in activities of daily living and an inability to return to work ...
This cross-sectional pilot study objectively measured sedentary and non-sedentary time in a sample of bus drivers from the East Midlands, United Kingdom. Participants wore an activPAL3 inclinometer for 7days and completed a daily diary. Drivers blood pressure, heart rate, waist circumference and body composition were measured objectively at the outset. The proportions of time spent sedentary and non-sedentary were calculated during waking hours on workdays and non-workdays and during working-hours and non-working-hours on workdays. 28 (85% of those enrolled into the study) provided valid objective monitoring data (89.3% male, [median±IQR] age: 45.2±12.8years, BMI 28.1±5.8kg/m2). A greater proportion of time was spent sitting on workdays than non-workdays (75% [724±112min/day] vs. 62% [528±151min/day]; p<0.001), and during working-hours than non-working-hours (83% [417±88min/day] vs. 68% [307±64min/day]; p<0.001) on workdays. Drivers spent less than 3% of their overall time ...
PLoS ONE, December 2009, e8192. Background: Prenatal life exposures, potentially manifested as altered birth size, may influence the later risk of major chronic diseases through direct biologic effects on disease processes, but also by modifying adult behaviors such as physical activity that may influence later disease risk.. Methods/Principal Findings: We investigated the association between birth weight and leisure time physical activity (LTPA) in 43,482 adolescents and adults from 13 Nordic cohorts. Random effects meta-analyses were performed on categorical estimates from cohort-, age-, sex- and birth weight specific analyses. Birth weight showed a reverse U-shaped association with later LTPA; within the range of normal weight the association was negligible but weights below and above this range were associated with a lower probability of undertaking LTPA. Compared with the reference category (3.26-3.75 kg), the birth weight categories of 1.26-1.75, 1.76-2.25, 2.26-2.75, and 4.76-5.25 kg, had ...
surveys, was associated with a lower risk of colon, breast, and endometrial cancers. They also determined that leisure-time physical activity was associated with a lower risk of 10 additional cancers, with the greatest risk reductions for esophageal adenocarcinoma, liver cancer, cancer of the gastric cardia, kidney cancer, and myeloid leukemia. Myeloma and cancers of the head and neck, rectum, and bladder also showed reduced risks that were significant, but not as strong. Risk was reduced for lung cancer, but only for current and former smokers; the reasons for this are still being studied.. "Leisure-time physical activity is known to reduce risks of heart disease and risk of death from all causes, and our study demonstrates that it is also associated with lower risks of many types of cancer," said Moore. "Furthermore, our results support that these associations are broadly generalizable to different populations, including people who are overweight or obese, or those with a history of smoking. ...
Increases in overweight and obesity have been observed globally in both developed and developing countries. The authors assessed the relation between lifestyle factors and body mass index (BMI) (weight (kg)/height (m)2) in a population-based longitudinal study, using BMI and its subsequent change as responses in a multilevel model. The authors included 11,115 men and women aged 20-61 years at baseline who were living in the municipality of Tromsø, Norway, and who participated in three or four consecutive health surveys between 1979-1980 and 2001. Baseline age, physical activity at work, coffee consumption, and desired BMI (i.e., the BMI that the subjects reported they would like to have) were positively associated with baseline BMI, whereas height, alcohol consumption, leisure-time physical activity, and level of education were inversely associated. Most relations were found to be stronger in women than in men. Clinically relevant effect sizes were observed for most of the significant ...
Methods: We analyzed data for 2,458 men aged 40+ years from the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). PSA levels were estimated from serum using an immunoenzymatic technique. Height and weight were measured during a physical examination and body mass index (BMI; kilograms/(height in meters)) was estimated using these data.Insulin levels were measured in a subgroup of participants from stored sera. Men with the presence of 3 of the following 5 criteria were considered as having metabolic syndrome: 1.) Waist circumference ,102 cm 2.) Hypertension ,130/85 3.) Fasting glucose ,100 md/dl 4.) Hypertriglyceridemia ,150 mg/dl 5.) HDL cholesterol: ,40 mg/dl. Leisure time physical activity levels were self-reported. Energy intake was estimated from a 24-hour dietary recall. We computed age-adjusted geometric mean PSA (ng/ml) among men with and without insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome (n=1200) and by level of energy intake and physical activity in the whole ...

Computing giants like Amazon and Rackspace are leaders in the virtualization of computer servers, a core element in the development of cloud computing. This technology makes it possible for a single PC that was used 20 percent of the time to be used 80 percent of the time or more, Hardy said. Software that monitored workloads could identify when a machine was free, and assign it a workload that would keep it busy without distracting it from its original function, he said. But until recently, that kind of utilization efficiency was seen mostly in corporate data centers and computer-centric organizations.. ...
