INTRODUCTION:. Lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) is often one of the first signs of a generalized atherosclerotic disease in type 1 and type 2 diabetic subjects.. MATERIALS AND METHODS:. We studied 143 diabetic subjects at 30-70 years of age, M/F 69/74, 74 with type 1 and 69 with type 2 diabetes, without previously known or suspected lower extremity arterial disease. The relationship between early asymptomatic lower extremity arterial disease and blood levels of HbA1c, lipids and fibrinolysis markers (tPA-activity, tPA mass, PAI-1 activity, tPA-PAI-1 complex) was assessed. In parallel, a group with non-diabetic subjects (n=80) was studied.. RESULTS:. 35 (24%) diabetic subjects were classified as having sign(s) of LEAD, defined as having at least one reduced peripheral blood pressure measurement, 28% in type 1 vs 20% in type 2 diabetic subjects (p=NS). In univariate logistic regression analyses age, glycemic level (HbA1c), male gender (only in type 1 diabetic subjects), hypertension and tPA ...
Wearable motion sensors consisting of accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetic sensors are readily available nowadays. The small size and low production costs of motion sensors make them a very good tool for human motions analysis. However, data processing and accuracy of the collected data are important issues for research purposes. In this paper, we aim to review the literature related to usage of inertial sensors in human lower limb biomechanics studies. A systematic search was done in the following search engines: ISI Web of Knowledge, Medline, SportDiscus and IEEE Xplore. Thirty nine full papers and conference abstracts with related topics were included in this review. The type of sensor involved, data collection methods, study design, validation methods and its applications were reviewed.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the separate associations of leg length, a biomarker of prepubertal exposures and growth, and trunk length with adult levels of liver enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the British Womens Health and Heart Study, a random sample of British women aged 60-79 years. RESULTS: Leg length was inversely associated with age-adjusted levels of ALT, GGT and ALP. These associations remained when controlling for childhood and adulthood social class, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, waist-to-hip ratio and trunk length. Trunk length was positively associated with ALT and inversely associated with ALP and the associations remained when adjusting for covariables. CONCLUSIONS: Adult liver function is affected by early life environmental exposures as reflected in leg length, and this may suggest common childhood ...

Causes of bruise on my upper leg - What can cause major bruising above the knee (thigh) & upper leg? It went away on its own (3 weeks) on a friend of mine, could it be a silent signal? Could be normal. Its hard to say without more information. The important thing would be to determine the history and any associated symptoms. Without any other symptoms or history, it may represent normal bruising which surprisingly can sometimes present with a severe appearance and little trauma (sometimes not even remembered).

Detailed gait analysis reveals that people with clogged leg arteries rely more on muscles in the back of the calf when they walk to compensate for weakness in certain hip muscles, according to a study presented at the American Heart Associations Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology/Peripheral Vascular Disease Scientific Sessions 2015 in San Francisco in May.. A release from the association notes that this suggests that exercise training to strengthen hip flexor muscles may increase how far patients can walk without calf pain.. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the arteries to the legs and other parts of the body, which restricts blood flow. It can cause pain, changes in skin color, sores or ulcers and difficulty walking. Total loss of circulation to the legs and feet can cause gangrene and loss of a limb.. The release quotes Takaaki Kakihana, P.T., M.Sc., lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate at Tohoku Graduate School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan, as ...
In human anatomical terms, the leg is the part of the lower limb[2] that lies between the knee and the ankle.[3][4] This article generally follows the common usage. The leg from the knee to the ankle is called the cnemis (neemis) or crus[5]. The calf is the back portion and the shin is the front. Legs are often used metaphorically in many cultures to indicate either strength or mobility. The supporting columns of an object may be referred to as legs as well, as in chair legs. ...

Having visible veins in your legs isnt generally dangerous, but it can be extremely damaging to a persons self-esteem. Fortunately, there are a number of simple lifestyle changes you can make in order to reduce your chances of developing abnormal leg veins such as varicose veins and spider veins. Here are some tips for keeping your legs healthy and attractive.. Try to maintain a healthy weight. This doesnt mean crash dieting; it means eating a healthy and balanced diet and getting a reasonable amount of exercise each week. The less excess weight your legs have to hold up, the less likely it is that blood will begin to pool in them-which is how abnormal veins develop.. Dont stand or sit for too long. When you keep your legs in a single position for too long, it interferes with your normal blood circulation. If your job requires a lot of sitting, get up every 20-30 minutes, walk around, and stretch out your calves. Riding a bike, going for a hike, or taking a swim are also great ways to ...

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by a widespread endothelial dysfunction20 and a 2- to 3-fold increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. As previously highlighted by our group, circulating blood cells in diabetes are subjected to many biochemical alterations attributable to the high oxidative stress and the unfavorable vascular environment.21,22. The present study demonstrates that number and function of circulating EPCs are profoundly altered in type 2 diabetic patients with PAD compared with diabetic patients without PAD. Moreover, we show strong correlations between circulating EPC levels and the severity of carotid and lower extremity arterial disease.. In this work we have used 2 independent methods to study endothelial progenitors: flow cytometry of fresh blood and ex vivo culture. Flow cytometry is considered the gold standard for quantitative enumeration of EPC, being sensitive, precise and reproducible23: using this technique, we have defined EPCs by the surface expression ...

The endothelin-1 vasoconstrictor pathway contributes to age-related elevations in resting peripheral vascular tone primarily through activation of the endothelin subtype A (ET(A)) receptor. However, the regulatory influence of ET(A)-mediated vasoconstriction during exercise in the elderly is unknown. Thus, in 17 healthy volunteers (n = 8 young, 24±2 years; n = 9 old, 70±2 years), we examined leg blood flow, mean arterial pressure, leg arterial-venous oxygen (O2) difference, and leg O2 consumption (VO2) at rest and during knee-extensor exercise before and after intra-arterial administration of the ET(A) antagonist BQ-123. During exercise, BQ-123 administration increased leg blood flow to a greater degree in the old (+29±5 mL/min/W) compared with the young (+16±3 mL/min/W). The increase in leg blood flow with BQ-123 was accompanied by an increase in leg VO2 in both groups, suggesting a reduced efficiency following ET(A) receptor blockade. Together, these findings have identified an age-related

New Indications for Self-Expanding Device Address Broad Area of Peripheral Artery Disease. Expanding its role in the treatment of peripheral artery disease in the United States, Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Complete SE (self-expanding) vascular stent for use in the lower extremities -- specifically, the superficial femoral artery (SFA) and proximal popliteal artery (PPA), which carry blood through the upper legs.. The same device was originally approved by the FDA for use in the iliac arteries, which perfuse the pelvis. It also has the CE (Conformité Européene) mark for iliac and, most recently, for SFA and PPA indications.. FDA approval of the new SFA and PPA indications was supported by the results of the Complete SE SFA study -- an independently adjudicated single-arm, multicenter trial that enrolled 196 patients at 28 sites in the United States and Europe. The study showed a clinically-driven target lesion ...
Ive been having problems really getting my horse to move off my right leg. Left leg is great, right not so much. I try backing it up with a whip, which doesnt work too well.. either he doesnt listen, or he jumps and has flashbacks to his (not so) glory days on the track and runs through my hands. I broke down a day or two ago and give him a firm smack when he wasnt moving off my leg, and he did listen better after that, but it was accompanied by him diving onto his forehand and trying to run, which Ive spent soooo long trying to stop. And the improved listening didnt last beyond that one ride. I usually avoid really using the whip, because once his brain turns off, the remainder of the ride is pretty much shot. He doesnt react badly to spurs, but a lot of times, he just doesnt react to the right spur. I usually wear maybe 1/2 POWs.. I also have rollerball spurs (which he listened to the first time, not so much the second, and havent used them since). Maybe I should try the 1 knob ...

Muscle stretch At least once a day when lying down do the following exercise. First, place a rolled-up towel under the ankle of the leg to be exercised. Then bend the other leg at the knee. With the straight leg, use your leg muscles to push the back of the knee firmly towards the bed or the floor. Hold for a slow count of 5. Repeat with each leg 5 times. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is more likely to occur in certain people and under certain circumstances. People who are over 60 years, have been restricted to prolonged bed rest, have a blood clotting disorder or hormonal disturbances, with heart failure, smoke or are obese are more likely to develop DVT. However, it can occur in any person of any age.. The term thrombosis means blood clot formation. In DVT, the blood clot form in the deep vein of the legs. Sometimes it can form in the superficial veins of the leg but this is less likely to lead to pulmonary embolism. This type of clot formation occurs when blood flow is slow (sluggish circulation). The leg is more frequently affected because of its distance from the heart and there is insufficient pressure to push it back up to the heart.. Movement of the legs allows for the blood to slowly make its ways back to the torso provided that the veins and its valves are functioning normally. When a blood clot forms here it may then remain in the leg for ...
