INTRODUCTION:. Lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) is often one of the first signs of a generalized atherosclerotic disease in type 1 and type 2 diabetic subjects.. MATERIALS AND METHODS:. We studied 143 diabetic subjects at 30-70 years of age, M/F 69/74, 74 with type 1 and 69 with type 2 diabetes, without previously known or suspected lower extremity arterial disease. The relationship between early asymptomatic lower extremity arterial disease and blood levels of HbA1c, lipids and fibrinolysis markers (tPA-activity, tPA mass, PAI-1 activity, tPA-PAI-1 complex) was assessed. In parallel, a group with non-diabetic subjects (n=80) was studied.. RESULTS:. 35 (24%) diabetic subjects were classified as having sign(s) of LEAD, defined as having at least one reduced peripheral blood pressure measurement, 28% in type 1 vs 20% in type 2 diabetic subjects (p=NS). In univariate logistic regression analyses age, glycemic level (HbA1c), male gender (only in type 1 diabetic subjects), hypertension and tPA ...
Wearable motion sensors consisting of accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetic sensors are readily available nowadays. The small size and low production costs of motion sensors make them a very good tool for human motions analysis. However, data processing and accuracy of the collected data are important issues for research purposes. In this paper, we aim to review the literature related to usage of inertial sensors in human lower limb biomechanics studies. A systematic search was done in the following search engines: ISI Web of Knowledge, Medline, SportDiscus and IEEE Xplore. Thirty nine full papers and conference abstracts with related topics were included in this review. The type of sensor involved, data collection methods, study design, validation methods and its applications were reviewed.

The present study examined if a marked reduction in oxygen delivery, unlike findings with moderate intensity exercise, would slow leg oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics during intense exercise (86±3% of incremental test peak power). Seven healthy males (26±1 years, mean±SEM) performed one-legged knee-extensor exercise (60±3 W) for 4 min in a control setting (CON) and with arterial infusion of L-NMMA and indomethacin in the working leg to reduce blood flow by inhibiting formation of nitric oxide and prostanoids (double blockade; DB). In DB leg blood flow (LBF) and oxygen delivery during the first minute of exercise were 25-50% lower ( ...
Along with flat abs, many women desire strong, sexy legs. Unfortunately, the upper leg is a common problem area for excess fat. Upper leg exercises can tone and strengthen, but wont do much for weight loss. If you want to look great in skinny jeans or shorts, youve got to do cardiovascular exercise along ...
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the separate associations of leg length, a biomarker of prepubertal exposures and growth, and trunk length with adult levels of liver enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the British Womens Health and Heart Study, a random sample of British women aged 60-79 years. RESULTS: Leg length was inversely associated with age-adjusted levels of ALT, GGT and ALP. These associations remained when controlling for childhood and adulthood social class, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, waist-to-hip ratio and trunk length. Trunk length was positively associated with ALT and inversely associated with ALP and the associations remained when adjusting for covariables. CONCLUSIONS: Adult liver function is affected by early life environmental exposures as reflected in leg length, and this may suggest common childhood ...
BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced hyperkalemia, which may contribute to exercise hyperpnea and exertional fatigue, is increased in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). This study examined whether differences in leg blood flow during exercise could be responsible for alterations in the level of hyperkalaemia, as well as the effect of physical training. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 10 subjects with CHF (ejection fraction 23 +/- 3.9%; mean +/- SD) and 10 subjects with normal left ventricular function (NLVF) who had undergone previous coronary bypass graft surgery (ejection fraction 64 +/- 8.0%; mean +/- SD). Subjects performed incremental cycle exercise to exhaustion before and after physical training. The rises in femoral venous potassium concentration ([K+]), heart rate, lactate, and ventilation (VI) with exercise were all greater in the subjects with CHF than in those with NLVF (P | .05). There was no difference between the groups in leg blood flow during submaximal exercise but peak leg flow was

Causes of bruise on my upper leg - What can cause major bruising above the knee (thigh) & upper leg? It went away on its own (3 weeks) on a friend of mine, could it be a silent signal? Could be normal. Its hard to say without more information. The important thing would be to determine the history and any associated symptoms. Without any other symptoms or history, it may represent normal bruising which surprisingly can sometimes present with a severe appearance and little trauma (sometimes not even remembered).

Detailed gait analysis reveals that people with clogged leg arteries rely more on muscles in the back of the calf when they walk to compensate for weakness in certain hip muscles, according to a study presented at the American Heart Associations Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology/Peripheral Vascular Disease Scientific Sessions 2015 in San Francisco in May.. A release from the association notes that this suggests that exercise training to strengthen hip flexor muscles may increase how far patients can walk without calf pain.. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the arteries to the legs and other parts of the body, which restricts blood flow. It can cause pain, changes in skin color, sores or ulcers and difficulty walking. Total loss of circulation to the legs and feet can cause gangrene and loss of a limb.. The release quotes Takaaki Kakihana, P.T., M.Sc., lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate at Tohoku Graduate School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan, as ...

In human anatomical terms, the leg is the part of the lower limb[2] that lies between the knee and the ankle.[3][4] This article generally follows the common usage. The leg from the knee to the ankle is called the cnemis (neemis) or crus[5]. The calf is the back portion and the shin is the front. Legs are often used metaphorically in many cultures to indicate either strength or mobility. The supporting columns of an object may be referred to as legs as well, as in chair legs. ...

Having visible veins in your legs isnt generally dangerous, but it can be extremely damaging to a persons self-esteem. Fortunately, there are a number of simple lifestyle changes you can make in order to reduce your chances of developing abnormal leg veins such as varicose veins and spider veins. Here are some tips for keeping your legs healthy and attractive.. Try to maintain a healthy weight. This doesnt mean crash dieting; it means eating a healthy and balanced diet and getting a reasonable amount of exercise each week. The less excess weight your legs have to hold up, the less likely it is that blood will begin to pool in them-which is how abnormal veins develop.. Dont stand or sit for too long. When you keep your legs in a single position for too long, it interferes with your normal blood circulation. If your job requires a lot of sitting, get up every 20-30 minutes, walk around, and stretch out your calves. Riding a bike, going for a hike, or taking a swim are also great ways to ...

1. In a group of nine middle-aged patients undergoing varicose vein surgery, cardiac output, right atrial, pulmonary arterial and capillary pressures, and leg blood flow were measured after induction of general anaesthesia but before operation, and also during operation before and after blood substitution.. 2. Under anaesthesia, the mean preoperative blood flows in the superficial and common femoral arteries were 160 ml/min and 280 ml/min respectively. These flows are comparable with those obtained in other studies under similar conditions but lower than values obtained in conscious subjects. During the operation the leg blood flow decreased by 24%. As cardiac output remained unchanged, the fractional leg blood flow fell. After transfusion of 900 ml of blood the leg blood flow doubled.. 3. It is concluded that anaesthesia, surgical trauma and variations in blood volume greatly influence the leg blood flow and that an adequate substitution of operative blood loss is of utmost importance to ...

Many people have varicose veins, which cause unsightly legs, leg pain and swelling. Varicose veins are caused by venous reflux disease. Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist in the return of blood back to the heart. With venous reflux disease, the valves that keep the blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged. The valves do not close properly, allowing blood to flow in reverse and pool in the leg veins. This causes the superficial veins to swell and bulge resulting in unsightly varicose veins, leg swelling, pain and fatigue. Without treatment, venous reflux disease can also lead to skin pigment changes in the legs as well as ulcerations that are slow to heal. Elevating the legs, wearing compression stockings, rest and pain medications can offer temporary relief of some symptoms of venous reflux disease, but do not fix the underlying problem.. In recent years, a new procedure has become available to treat venous reflux disease. This procedure, ...

Roth, R, Donath, L, Zahner, L, and Faude, O. Acute leg and trunk muscle fatigue differentially affect strength, sprint, agility, and balance in young adults. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2019-How important leg or trunk muscles are for balance and sprint performance is still unexplored. Therefore, we separately fatigued the leg and trunk musculature and examined their contribution to strength, balance, sprint, and agility performance. Twenty-four healthy adults (12 women; age 22.9 [SD: 2.6] years; body mass 59 [10] kg; height 1.65 [0.09] m; and 12 men; age 22.7 [3.0] years; body mass 78 [9] kg; height 1.81 [0.06] m; at least 3 training sessions/week for at least 90 minutes) underwent a leg and a trunk fatigue procedure, each of 20-minute duration and a control condition at rest in a randomized order. Each condition was conducted individually on 3 separate days. Isokinetic leg and trunk strength, as well as static and dynamic balance, sprint, agility, and prone plank endurance, were ...
The Redskins have tasked Sanchez with keeping the Redskins afloat in the NFC playoff picture after McCoy suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg in the first half of their 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.. McCoy ran to avoid a sack and tried to slide as the Eagles defense rushed toward him. McCoy planted his right leg into the turf and the lower part of the leg and ankle viciously whipped into safety Malcolm Jenkins knee.. The Redskins know a thing or two about serious injuries to quarterbacks McCoy got his chance because Smith suffered a broken right leg just weeks ago that has threatened his career.. We have to get a plan ready for Mark moving forward, coach Jay Gruden said. Weve got to play great football around him which we didnt do tonight.. McCoy stayed in the game and completed two short passes before limping off with the Redskins trailing 7-3 to the Super Bowl champion Eagles (6-6). Data on interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) release during acute exercise are not conclusive, and information is lacking about the impact of physical inactivity. Some studies have shown an increase, but others report no changes in IL-6 and TNF-a release during exercise. We have now studied the temporal relationship of leg IL-6 and TNF-a release before and during isolated two-legged exercise after 14 days of one-leg immobilization (IM) while the other leg served as the control (CON) leg. Fifteen healthy male subjects (mean ± SEM age, 23 ± 1 years; body mass index, 23.6 ± 0.7 kg m; and maximal oxygen uptake, 46.8 ± 1.4 ml kg min) performed 45 min of two-legged dynamic knee-extensor exercise at 19.6 ± 0.8 W. Arterial and femoral venous blood samples from the CON and the IM leg were collected every 15 min during exercise, and leg blood flow was measured with Doppler ultrasound. The arterial plasma IL-6 concentration increased (P ,0.05) with exercise (rest, 1.3 ± 0.1 pg ...
Leg stiffness is often computed from ground reaction force (GRF) registrations of vertical hops to estimate the force-resisting capacity of the lower-extremity during ground contact, with leg stiffness values incorporated in a spring-mass model to describe human motion. Individual biomechanical characteristics, including leg stiffness, were investigated in 40 healthy males. Our aim is to report and discuss the use of 13 different computational methods for evaluating leg stiffness from a double-legged repetitive hopping task, using only GRF registrations. Four approximations for the velocity integration constant were combined with three mathematical expressions, giving 12 methods for computing stiffness using double integrations. One frequency-based method that considered ground contact times was also trialled. The 13 methods thus defined were used to compute stiffness in four extreme cases, which were the stiffest, and most compliant, consistent and variable subjects. All methods provided ...

We sought to determine the degree to which isolated swinging of a leg is metabolically costly. The mechanics of a pendulum predict that sharply increasing force and work are required to move the leg quickly. Production of muscle work and force for short durations (force/time hypothesis) might both require metabolic energy.. The observed increases in mechanical (Fig. 3) and metabolic (Fig. 4) measurements confirm that pendulum mechanics are relevant to the leg motion. Even though no net work is performed over an entire cycle, force and work are necessary within each cycle to move the leg faster than its natural frequency. The sharp increase in mechanical demands must be met by muscle, probably causing the fourfold increase in metabolic cost.. Mechanical work is probably responsible for much of the metabolic cost. Some active work is almost certainly performed by muscle fibers, but not necessarily as much as the measured work performed on the limb. Series elasticity, in tendon and other ...
The goal of the study is to determine the safety and possible effectiveness of various doses of autologous (ones own) stem cells, delivered with a needle into the regions of the leg with poor blood flow in patients with blocked leg arteries that results in claudication (pain when walking). Stem cells are primitive cells produced by the bone marrow that can develop into blood cells or other types of cells. In addition to determining whether this new approach is safe, the diagnostic tests may offer preliminary insights into the usefulness of this approach for treating intermittent claudication - the condition where areas in the leg are lacking enough oxygen and blood flow to keep the leg muscle working well, causing pain and cramping upon walking.. This study is a double-blind, randomized study to compare CD34-positive stem cells versus a placebo agent (salt water solution known as normal saline). The patient will have a 3:1 chance of their stem cells versus the placebo. Regardless of a patient ...
Do you have difficulty sitting still on an airplane because your legs are uncomfortable? Do your restless legs prevent you from falling asleep at night? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you might have Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).. RLS is an uncomfortable sensation in the legs that appears at rest or at bedtime. The sensation is notoriously difficult to describe, but some refer to it as a creepy-crawly feeling. RLS has many names and has been variously referred to as Jimmy legs, the heebie jeebies, and Elvis legs. It creates an irresistible urge to move the legs. When the legs are moved, this sensation is temporarily relieved. RLS is a problem because it prevents people from falling asleep and the uncomfortable sensation can cause a great deal of distress.. ...

In addition, an article I read last year noted that lower leg muscles are the first to degrade with age, and older runners and walkers use upper leg muscles more than lower and move less fluidly as a result, so as runners (and hikers) get older its important to exercise lower leg muscles. The article included a number of exercises mentioned here.. Any walking on uneven ground, or, over boulders (say by a beach wave break) would be helpful. Trail running as well, though if you have had an issue you might like to start with other exercises first before trail running.. +1 Dena - single leg Yoga poses are excellent - youll notice small muscles in your lower legs making many quick autocorrects, quickening response time. Tai Chi, even just learning a few simple sequences, offers active balance practice and ankle strengthening and you can engage in pushing of arms against an opponent or still object like a tree while holding your ground.. +1 Joe ...

The lower back is a common area of weakness-our patients typically describe achy, tight or stiff lower backs. Some develop referred pain from nerve conditions that may travel down a leg, for example Sciatica or Piriformus Syndrome.. When feet and legs are not working the way they were intended, repetitive abnormal stress can be localized within the lower back. The sacroiliac joint is the area connecting the torso with the pelvis. As the legs internally rotate, the pelvis must anteriorly tilt, compensating for this motion. This in turn leads to sacroiliac joint instability requiring muscular compensation. This muscular compensation will lead to postural and biomechanical changes, potentially resulting in pain in other areas.. Pelvic instability will also arise in the case of a structural or functional leg length difference and create a scoliosis. A structural leg length difference occurs when a true difference between the lengths of the right and left legs exists. In this case, balancing the leg ...

Bypass surgery on the arteries of the leg explained by Shane MacSweeney consultant vascular surgeon at Nottinghams Queens Medical Centre.
Lower Limb Artery Disease. PRINCETON, N.J. and PARIS - September 28, 2015 - STENTYS (FR0010949404 - STNT), a medical technology company commercializing the worlds first and only Self-Apposing® coronary stent, today announced that the Companys Drug-Eluting stent received CE Mark for treatment of below-the-knee (BTK) arteries, making STENTYS product the first self-expanding and drug-eluting stent with regulatory approval in Europe for this indication.. The CE Mark was obtained following the strong results achieved by STENTYS stent in the PES BTK-70 study in which the product prevented foot amputation in 99% of the 70 patients treated for critical limb ischemia (CLI).. The most severe cases of CLI, in which tissue of the foot or ankle does not receive a sufficient supply of oxygen and begins to die (necrosis), often require amputation. To prevent this outcome, surgeons open up the artery with balloons and frequently implant stents. Approximately 25% of diabetics globally suffer from CLI and, ...
The whole study is divided in 4 parallel protocols. The first protocol estimates the reliability of the technique through test-retest recordings. The second protocol aims to prove that exercise Tcpo2 is efficient to estimate the benefit of proximal revascularisation on proximal and distal ischemia in patients suffering stage two lower extremity arterial disease. The third protocol aims at estimating with exercise tcpo2 the eventual apparison of proximal ischemia after aorto-bi-femoral bypasses. The last protocol is a transversal study of patients with aorto-bi-femoral bypasses aiming to analyse the presence of proximal and distal symptoms and ischemia.. The hypothesis for protocol 2 is that TcpO2 at exercise is significantly improved after surgery at the aortic and primary iliac artery. The hypothesis for protocols 3 and 4 relates on the hypothesis that a significant number of patients benefiting aorto-bi-femoral bypass suffer isolated proximal pain/ischemia after surgery.. Amendement to the ...

Leg swelling , or edema, can be caused by a number of medical conditions, including problems with the heart, liver, and kidneys. Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) can also cause leg swelling. In fact, swelling is one of the signs of more advanced venous disease.. Veins drain the used blood from the body back to the heart. In order to fight gravity and keep the blood flowing from the feet up to the heart, veins are equipped with one-way valves. With CVD, some of those one-way valves become leaky. When this happens in the legs, blood will drain more slowly, which causes the legs to swell.. Figuring out the cause of a patients swelling can be difficult. Often, a patient will have more than one cause of the swelling. At McQuaid Vein Specialists, our vascular technologists will perform a detailed ultrasound study to look for diseased veins as a source of the swelling. If vein problems are found, treatment options will be discussed.. ...

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is generally associated with blocked arteries of the legs. The blockage most often is the result of a chronic buildup of hard fatty material (atherosclerosis) into the inside lining of the arterial wall of the legs. This ultimately narrows and blocks the flow of blood which carries oxygen and nutrients to the limb. The femoral and popliteal arteries are the major arterial blood supply to the lower extremities and are a common location for atherosclerotic disease to develop.. The presence of atherosclerosis in the leg arteries is a strong indicator that there is also atherosclerosis in the arteries of the heart and brain, because atherosclerosis is a widespread disease of the arteries. Atherosclerosis of the leg arteries may cause a blockage, obstructing blood flow, and potentially result in pain in the leg(s), ulcers or wounds that do not heal, and/or the need for amputation (surgical removal) of a foot or leg. Therefore, PAD has two major complications ...
