Mt. Lebanon Township is a township with home rule status in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 33,137 at the 2010 census. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh. Established in 1912 as "Mount Lebanon," the communitys official name was changed to "Mt. Lebanon" when its home rule charter took effect in 1975. The first settlers arrived in 1773-1774, having purchased the land from the descendants of William Penn; other pioneers soon bought land from the state government. In 1912, Mount Lebanon Township was incorporated as a "First Class Township" under Pennsylvania state law. It had formerly been a part of Scott Township, which in turn traces its origins to the long-defunct St. Clair Township. Mount Lebanon was not named for two Cedar of Lebanon trees that were planted in 1850 on Washington Road near the top of Bower Hill Road, but was named after the area from which they came, Mount Lebanon, due to the similarities between the two landscapes. Prior to the incorporation of the ...
The Lebanon Center was first established in Lebanon Union High School in 1972, then moved into three modular units across the street. The units were moved in 1981 to a 20-acre site at 2600 Stoltz Hill Road that had been acquired the same year through a purchase and donation agreement with Lebanon attorney Warren Gill. In 1986, the Lebanon community, led by the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce, asked LBCC to move its Community Education Center to the downtown area. The next year, the LBCC Board agreed to put the Stoltz Hill Road site up for sale and accepted donation of the former J.C. Penney building in downtown Lebanon after the store closed that year. The building at 550 Main Street was three times larger than the Stoltz Hill Road facility. By the end of the year, the college applied for a state economic development grant to remodel the store, and in 1990 the new Downtown Lebanon Center was dedicated.. In a 1994 purchase/donation agreement with James River Corporation, Linn-Benton Community ...
Lebanon is a city in and the county seat of Boone County, Indiana, United States. The population was 15,792 at the 2010 census. Lebanon is located in central Indiana, approximately 29 miles (47 km) northwest of downtown Indianapolis and 36 miles (58 km) southeast of Lafayette. Lebanon was founded in 1832. It was so named because a stand of hickory trees on the site reminded a pioneer settler of the Biblical cedars of Lebanon. The first post office at Lebanon was established in 1832. Lebanon is the home of the Historic Cragun House. Built in 1893, it was once the home of Strange Nathaniel Cragun and his family. The family travelled the world, and their house is now a living history museum full of the pieces they collected from their travels as well as original furniture from the dwelling. This Victorian home is owned and maintained by the Boone County Historical Society and serves as headquarters for the organization. The Cragun House has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. ...

Despite the misunderstandings on the first day, the Marines were able to complete their initial missions within a few hours of landing. Through the cooperation of Ambassador McClintock and General Chehab on the next day, BLT 2/2 consolidated American strength in the city of Beirut. As events turned out, 16 July was the climax of the entire operation. The remaining period was confined to a holding action until the Lebanese could settle their differences among themselves. The American forces provided a stabilizing influence on the Lebanese political scene. The Marine landings in Lebanon vividly demonstrated the close interplay between American military preparedness and the success of U. S. diplomacy. 36 NOTES Section I (1) Unless otherwise noted the material in this section is derived from Human Relations Area Files, Inc., Special Warfare Area Handbook for Lebanon dtd 15Jan58 (Lebanon File); Cdr James T. Lebanon is home to deep-rooted political, cultural and religious complexities that frequently result in complicated conflicts. Since the start of the Syria crisis, Lebanon has become home to the largest number of Syrian refugees per capita in the world - 25 percent of the population is now made up of refugees. Most of them have settled in the poorest areas of Lebanon. This has put additional strain on the countrys already-fragile infrastructure and social makeup, and tensions are soaring as Syrian refugees and Lebanese families compete for the same overstretched resources like jobs, shelter and public services. Learn about how your support is helping vulnerable communities in Lebanon ▸. For example, the inflow of refugees has expanded informal, low-wage employment and deteriorated working conditions, and both Lebanese and Syrian families are struggling to find and maintain sufficient livelihoods to meet their basic needs. More than 1 million people already live below the poverty line - and ...
Beirut (Arabic: بيروت‎ Bayrūt, French: Beyrouth) is the capital city of Lebanon with a population of approximately 2.1 million people in its metropolitan area. The city is on a relatively small headland jutting into the east Mediterranean. It is by far the biggest city in Lebanon. Due to Lebanons small size the capital has always held the status as the only true cosmopolitan city in the country, and ever since the independence, has been the commercial and financial hub of Lebanon. 20km to its North is Jounieh, a city very closely associated with Beirut.
Every visitor to Lebanon (Capital: Beirut) has heard that this is the only country in the world where one can ski on snow in the morning and swim in the waters of the Mediterranean in the afternoon. This is due to the fact that Lebanons mountain range rises up above a very narrow coast. Even the highest resorts are only a short drive from the coast. On clear days a particularly spectacular view can be seen from the top. From the top of Mzaar, the highest point above the resort of Faraya, the Bekaa Valley and the Anti Lebanon mountain range can be seen to one side, and to the other, the city of Beirut and other towns along the coast.

According to the report, the IDF is monitoring the new enclaves, checking for terrorist ventures. But unlike the support Israel has rendered Syrian refugees in the Golan heights, in this case such a connection is yet to be forged.. It is important to note that every fourth person currently residing in Lebanon is a Syrian refugee, and Israel must brace itself for at least some of this new reality to start affecting its northern region.. Amnesty International said in a report released Feb 2 that Syrian refugee women in Lebanon are more vulnerable to exploitation including sexual harassment. Amnesty said 70 percent of the more than one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon were living well below the local poverty line. Those refugees who receive assistance have faced cuts as donor funds to the United Nations are being curtailed. Amnesty said women refugees in particular faced exploitation.. The majority of children living and working on the streets of Lebanon today are Syrian refugees, and many of ...

Joyce famously boasted that his ambition in Ulysses was to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city were one day destroyed it could be reconstructed out of his novel. The same ambition seems to animate Jabers mapping of Beirut, where the possibility of destruction is not so remote as it might seem. It happened to the Hellenistic city in 140 BCE, then again in the earthquake of 551, and a third time during Lebanons fifteen year civil war (1975-1990). At the end of that conflict, the citys downtown lay in ruins. Rafiq Hariri, who had earned billions in the Saudi construction business and was newly elected as Lebanons prime minister in 1992, set up a real estate company called Solidere to oversee the rebuilding of the city center (later the scene of his own assassination). Solidere began its work by razing most of the district to the ground, uncovering in the process a mille-feuille of archeological strata from Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab, and Ottoman Beirut. Ten years later, a ...
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israel massed tanks and troops on the border Friday and warned civilians to flee Hezbollah-controlled southern Lebanon as it prepared for a likely ground invasion to set up a deep buffer zone. Hezbollah militants fired at least 11 rockets at Israels port city of Haifa, wounding five people ...

Prisons are one of the most militarized of zones, yet they are also the most grossly confined by routine. I include prison resistance here for two reasons. Many Palestinian and Lebanese women who took part in militant (and non-militant) struggle against Israeli occupation after its 1978 invasion of Lebanon were imprisoned in Israeli-controlled, Lebanese-run, prisons in then-occupied South Lebanon. Secondly, women in prisons are often forgotten in feminist discourse. Thus incorporating them into feminist consciousness is part of the methodology of remembering marginalized resistance that I foreground in this study. Prisons, after all, are sites of resistance to violence and gender hierarchies.. In this section, through a reading of Suha Becharas prison memoir, Resistance: My Life for Lebanon, and her co-edited collection of prison stories, أحلم بزنزانة من كرز, (I Dream of a Prison Cell [Made] of Cherries), I integrate experiences of women in prison into a queer antiracist ...
The Lebanese government today officially identifies eighteen different religious sects distributed over an area of 10,452 square kilometers. That makes Lebanon a country with many beliefs, but very little space. Lebanons democracy is "governed" by a confessional system whereby quotas divide the countrys major political posts among the various sects. For example, Lebanese law dictates that the president should be a Christian Maronite, the Speaker of Parliament a Shia Muslim, and the Prime Minister a Sunni Muslim. Furthermore, a recurrent historical observation clearly shows that major sectarian problems arose particularly when political tensions came to a climax, and vice versa. Thus, politics and sectarianism in Lebanon have always been intertwined, with the major political blocks each associated with a certain religious sect ...
The political landscape in Lebanon is dynamic. The unstable administration and the political divides in the Lebanese government meant there was a lack of an effective, rapid and strategic response to the refugee crisis. This vacuum with regard to the responsibilities and accountabilities of government actors, particularly at national level, resulted in the municipalities playing a greater role in responding to and coordinating the crisis. There is no national administrative or legal framework for the management of refugee affairs and the response to the refugee crisis must be coordinated across a number of Ministries. The central authority is weak, and with refugees scattered across the country, all activities on their behalf have to be carefully negotiated with local religious leaders and municipal representatives. Communities across Lebanon are largely confessional based and the same groups fighting each other within Syria are also present in Lebanon. All humanitarian efforts therefore have to ...
A Lebanese man who fled to Australia with a sponsored family visitor visa was denied refugee status as a gay man, due to the fact that he couldnt present evidence supporting his homosexuality. The mans claim that he deserved refugee status on the basis of anti-gay persecution was ruled inadequate by the Federal Circuit Court. The man sought refugee status within a month of arriving in Australia, claiming that hed been having secret same-sex relationships during his visit down under and was living as a closeted gay man during his life in Lebanon. He said that he was blackmailed in Lebanon after a co-worker had heard him talking in a toilet cubicle to a male friend and that he was fearful of being bullied, harassed, and persecuted by family and society were he to return to his home country. The court accepted that gays in Lebanon were discriminated against and prosecuted; however, due to the fact that the man hadnt interacted with any gay-affiliating groups nor engaged in intimate or sexual ...
The country encompasses a mix of cultures and ethnic groups built for more than 6,000 years. Although the official language is Arabic, the Arabs only reached Lebanon in the seventh century, and their culture was superimposed on an already diverse ethnic population. Some Lebanese, especially among Maronite Christians, see themselves as descendants of the Phoenicians, Canaanites, Mardaites, and Syriacs. This was supported by genetic studies and tend to de-emphasize or deny Lebanons Arab heritage. Melkite Greek Catholics, the Greek Orthodox, and some Maronites tend to focus more on the Greek heritage of the region from the days of the Byzantine Empire. Some Christians claim descent from Crusader knights who ruled Lebanon for a couple of centuries during the Middle Ages. This identification with non-Arab civilizations also exists in other religious communities, albeit not to the same extent. Sunni and Alawite Muslim, as well as Greek Orthodox and rural Roman Catholic Christians are believed to be ...

The United States is sending a warship to the Middle East as tensions with Syria get worse. A U.S. official confirms that the warship U.S.S. Cole will patrol off the coast of Lebanon. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Thursday the deployment is meant as a show of support for regional stability. He addedhat President Bush is concerned about the situation in Lebanon.. The Cole is sailing to the region from Malta. Its a not-too-subtle show of U.S. force in the region as international frustration mounts over a long political deadlock in tiny, weak Lebanon.. More on Obama and the Middle East, this time Lebanon. An aticle by Lee Smith on Michael Tottens website - The Tea Boy - calls into question his knowledge and tendencies in Lebanon, which according to his analysis might lead Obama to be much too accommodating to Syria. This would definitely not be good for Lebanon, which is backing Hezbollah in its attempt to take over the country. See also the analysis of Jeha - Between the lines. He says: "Could someone tell that neophyte that he is not yet President of the United States? He will have plenty of chances to "engage" with Syria at our expense, when or if he becomes "President of these 57 states". We may be down, but were not out yet ...
Summary An outbreak of influenza occurred among students and employees at the American University of Beirut during the winter season of 1953-54. It appeared in two distinct waves. The first wave, started in the last week of November and reached its peak in the second week of December, 1953, to decline thereafter. The second wave followed the first wave within two or three weeks showed a sharp rise, and disappeared during the first week of February. Hemagglutination-inhibition tests, using as antigens influenza A, A-prime, B and C viruses, were carried out on a limited number of paired serum samples obtained successively from patients in acute and convalescent stages of the disease. The results of these determinations indicated that 1 of 9 patients in the first wave had a 4-fold or more rise of antibody titer in his blood when tested with influenza A-prime virus, and 3 of 9 individuals in the same group had a simultaneous rise of antibody titer against both influenza A-prime and A viruses. Furthermore, 5
