In this review, we focus on two of the most prevalent learning disorders, dyslexia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Recent advances have refined our understanding of the specific neural networks that are altered in these disorders, yet questions remain regarding causal links between neural changes and behavioral improvements. After briefly reviewing the theoretical foundations of dyslexia and ADHD, we explore their distinct and shared characteristics, and discuss the comorbidity of the two disorders. Whilst these proceedings were underway, our NHS service accepted a referral from social services about the boys well-being. One session of multidisciplinary team assessment (including psychiatry, clinical psychology and specialist social work) was conducted for both boys and their carers. This produced two reports of less than ten pages each for each boy. The findings were presented at the end of the single session, provided in the context of a pre-arranged professionals meeting and indicated multiple mental health problems. Both boys had intellectual delay and difficulties with adaptive functioning, indicating significant learning disability, so a referral to Children with Learning Disabilities Services was made. For some time I have been interested in the activities of the specific learning difficulties group at the Department for Education and Skills. Its remit is to look at the criteria for diagnostic evidence for learning difficulties when students apply for disabled student allowances (DSA).. At the moment dyslexia is the only disability where such heavy diagnostic evidence is required for the DSA process. People with other disabilities do not have to prove their disability and in my view having to do so means that the Government is guilty of less favourable treatment under the Disability and Discrimination Act.. I have written to the DfES and it has stated that local education authorities have a legal responsibility to ask for such proof and have quoted the Education (Student Support) Regulations 2002 amended in 2004 as evidence of right. It is a receptive language-based learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent word recognition, rapid automatic naming, and/or reading comprehension skills. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonologic component of language that makes it difficult to use the alphabetic code to decode the written word. Early recognition and referral to qualified professionals for evidence-based evaluations and treatment are necessary to achieve the best possible outcome.
