This research study examined the transformational leadership behaviors of college athletic directors. There have been many research studies on transformational leadership and influence on followers. Though there has been considerable research on transformational leadership behaviors, the studies primarily focused on leadership in a business environment. Very few studies have focused on the transformational leadership behaviors of college athletic directors. Most of the research studies on the transformational leadership behaviors of college athletic directors are quantitative studies. The purpose of this study was to use a qualitative exploratory methodology approach to explore the transformational leadership behaviors of college athletic directors of top-rated college athletic programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 college athletic directors from the NACDA 2013/2014 top-rated athletic programs to identify the transformational leadership behaviors demonstrated by the college ...
In other words, leadership training should be experiential training. Simply put, you must practice leadership in order to get better at it. Leadership is a "full contact sport." Like football, or soccer, or basketball, you only get better by going through reps, practicing, playing, and facing real-world situations. No one is going to truly learn football, or soccer, or basketball by studying the playbook. The same goes for leadership. In reality, training is just a precursor to learning. As one author puts it "the more realistic a training environment is (i.e. where an actual failure is a real option) the more likely the student will be able to apply the training." Its easy to sit in a classroom and talk about what a 3rd party should do in a given situation. Its quite another thing to face the exact same situation in real life. Ok, those are some things that leadership ISNT. So what IS leadership training? Here are some training tips for leaders: ...

The field of Leadership Development began over a half-century ago, led by the philanthropic institutions in the United States, such as Coro Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation. More recently, in the past ten years, there has been a strong focus on supporting the development of effective grassroots leaders through community leadership development programs. As participants have graduated from these programs, a critical mass of grassroots leaders have begun to make an even stronger impact in addressing systematic social change in their communities. While there is significant literature on different theories and models in the Leadership Development field regarding the structural and programmatic issues in leadership development programs, there is a minimal amount of information about the experiences of participants after graduation. The goal of conducting this study was to contribute new, in-depth knowledge about how to support graduates of community leadership development programs after the completion
The literature on general management research often identifies leadership style as a critical success factor impacting individual and organizational performance. In this paper, commissioned by the Project Management Institute, the authors survey the recent literature on project management to determine whether project management researchers consider leadership style a critical success factor when managing projects and whether they believe leadership style impacts project outcome. This paper opens by outlining the purpose of this study and then describing the general management literature on leadership styles and competence in relation to four elements: 20th century leadership theory; team behavior; managerial behavior; and leadership competence. It then looks at the literature on project management and discusses the research on the relationship between a project managers leadership style and competence and project outcome and success. It then identifies and explains six points concerning the ...
We created a four-hour, simulation-based team leadership training for trauma team leaders in graduate medical education. Survey results showed nearly universal support for the training program. We acknowledge that the 36% of participants who did not respond to the survey may have viewed the training less favorably. The time interval between training and the evaluation ranged from 7-24 months. This timing meant all participants had completed at least two years of postgraduate training, with some respondents having completed residency training. Despite this time interval, and the concurrent learning opportunities, the evaluations suggest the training had a meaningful and lasting impact for most learners.. We believe the strength of the training was the learner-focused content, facilitated by small groups of learners and cycling between multiple simulations and debriefings. The facilitated discussion provided instructors with insight into the participants baseline level of knowledge and their ...
Transformational leadership was a term coined by political scientist James McGregor Burns in 1978 in his book "Leadership." He wrote that: "Transforming leadership occurs when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality transforming leadership ultimately becomes moral in that it raises the level of human conduct and ethical aspirations of both the leader and led and, thus, has a transforming effect on both." (Burns, 1978) I submit that my ultimate goal is to adapt a transformational leadership style but I recognize that it is a development process. In my initial personal assessment on leadership potential, I assessed myself with leadership potential but lacked in the managerial department. I also stated that I didnt see the need to change this shortfall because good leaders will have good managers working for them and they would ensure stability and efficiency. What I have discovered, after ...

However, program components that address certain key competencies, such as managing change, exhibiting agility and developing global strategies, were cited in the report as areas that need improvement.. "The lack of mastery is the big thing, and we have a long way to go in terms of that mastery," Edwards said. "We have identified the right competencies. We just need to get better at them.". High-performing multinational and global companies offer global leadership development opportunities to a broader segment of their workforce as opposed to limiting such training to high-potential employees. Theyre more than twice as likely as low-performing companies to include "any manager who expresses interest in global leadership development" in their program.. In addition, senior executives are becoming more directly involved in their organizations global leadership development programs, notably regarding business needs and communicating how the program relates to the business goals. Such involvement ...

The program was established to fill a gap in environmental decision making: ...
No instruments, to our knowledge, exist to assess leadership competency in existing and emerging allied health professional (AHP) leaders. This paper describes the development and preliminary exploration of the psychometric properties of a leadership competency instrument for existing and emerging AHP leaders and examines (i) its factor structure, (ii) its convergent validity with the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), and (iii) its discriminative validity in AHPs with different grades. During development, we included 25 items in the AHEAD (Aspiring leaders in Healthcare-Empowering individuals, Achieving excellence, Developing talents) instrument. A cross-sectional study was then conducted in 106 high-potential AHPs from Singapore General Hospital (34 men and 72 women) of different professional grades (49 principal-grade AHPs, 41 senior-grade AHPs, and 16 junior-grade AHPs) who completed both AHEAD and LPI instruments. Exploratory factor analysis was used to test the theoretical structure of AHEAD.
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between attitudes toward academic and inclusive practices for students with disabilities and selected leadership behaviors (transformational and transactional) among principals in North Carolina. Participants for this study were randomly selected middle school principals from public schools in North Carolina. This study used a one-group, correlational design, using two instruments. The results of this study found a significant relationship between academic and physical inclusive practices and transformational leadership behaviors, r (75) =.320, p ,. 01). However, no significant relationship was found between academic and physical inclusive practices and transactional leadership behaviors, r (72) = -.068, p ,.05. The findings for this study suggest that the more North Carolina middle school principals demonstrated transformational leadership behaviors, the more positive their attitudes were toward academic and physical inclusive practices ...

The purpose of this paper was to review the literature on leadership and safety in order to highlight possible applications to health care. There are few studies of safety leadership in health care, so it is necessary to extrapolate from the studies that have been conducted in other industrial sectors (mainly energy and manufacturing). In those sectors, there is sufficient empirical research on leadership and safety to identify a generic set of effective behaviours at three organisational levels (supervisors, middle managers, senior managers; see table 1). It has already been suggested that transformational leadership may be an appropriate model for improving patient safety in health care26 and this paper discusses several studies that apply the transformational/transactional leadership paradigm to safety research. As not all of the studies reviewed use the transformational/transactional paradigm, table 1 indicates whether the behaviours identified at each management level are transactional or ...

"Women are indeed increasingly choosing oncology specialties in Greece, however, most decision-making posts are still dominated by men across the profession, in private practice, academia, and national health environments. This needs to change," she said.. The survey of 80 female members of the Hellenic Societies of Medical, Radiation, and Surgical Oncology showed that while women were widely represented in workplaces, team leaders were men in 82% of cases.. In a sample of 106 emerging and existing AHP leaders from 7 professions, the factorial structure of the AHEAD instrument was generally supported. AHEAD showed convergent validity with the LPI. It also showed better validity for discriminating AHP grades than did the LPI. To our knowledge, AHEAD is the first validated specific instrument to measure leadership competency in existing and emerging AHP leaders.. Consistent with our expectations, EFA of the AHEAD items identified a 2-factor solution where "skills" and "values" formed separate factors. Internal consistency of AHEAD (overall and its 2 factors) was excellent and all items loaded significantly (factor loadings exceeded 0.40). Nevertheless, 4 items loaded differently from their designated factors (Table 2). Specifically, "values" items "courage", "inspiration", and "perseverance" loaded highly and specifically on the "skills" factor whilst "skills" item "interpersonal skills" loaded moderately on "values" factor.. How do we explain these ...

The study, published online in Leadership Quarterly, is the first to identify a specific DNA sequence associated with the tendency for individuals to occupy a leadership position. Using a large twin sample, the international research team, which included academics from Harvard, NYU, and the University of California, estimate that a quarter of the observed variation in leadership behaviour between individuals can be explained by genes passed down from their parents.. "We have identified a genotype, called rs4950, which appears to be associated with the passing of leadership ability down through generations," said lead author Dr Jan-Emmanuel De Neve (UCL School of Public Policy). "The conventional wisdom - that leadership is a skill - remains largely true, but we show it is also, in part, a genetic trait." To find the genotype, Dr De Neve and his colleagues analysed data from two large-scale samples in the United States, available through the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add ...
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between authentic leadership characteristics and physical health behaviors, as defined by the Goolsby Leadership Model (Quick, Macik-Frey, and Cooper, 2007). Physical health was measured by physical activity, cigarette smoking, and fruit and vegetable consumption, which are three of four controllable health risk factors that are related to many of the negative consequences of chronic disease (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2009). Authentic leadership was measured using the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) by Walumbwa et al. (2008), which measured four components of authentic leadership and produced an overall authentic leadership score. The overall leadership score did not have any significant relationships with the physical health behaviors but three authentic leadership components did have significant relationships with physical health. Specifically, self-awareness had significant ...

Leadership and staffing are recognised as important factors for quality of care. This study examines the effects of ward leaders task- and relationship-oriented leadership styles, staffing levels, ratio of registered nurses and ratio of unlicensed staff on three independent measures of quality of care. A cross-sectional survey of forty nursing home wards throughout Norway was used to collect the data. Five sources of data were utilised: self-report questionnaires to 444 employees, interviews with and questionnaires to 13 nursing home directors and 40 ward managers, telephone interviews with 378 relatives and 900 hours of field observations. Separate multi-level analyses were conducted for quality of care assessed by relatives, staff and field observations respectively. Task-oriented leadership style had a significant positive relationship with two of the three quality of care indexes. In contrast, relationship-oriented leadership style was not significantly related to any of the indexes. The lack of

Transformational leadership is often cited as the foundation of engagement. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, for example, define this as "the kind of leadership that gets people to infuse their energy into strategies." This transformation occurs when both leader and follower are raised to higher levels of motivation and morality.. Where do Leaders get the motivation to inspire, enable and engage others?. Motivation is an inside job. At The Leadership Challenge® Workshop we provide at Sonoma Leadership Systems, we use two activities to tap into a leaders process of self-discovery. One activity involves reflecting on the characteristics of the "most admired" of behaviors that a leader exhibits that gives them credibility. Another activity has leaders explore their own "personal best experiences" as a way to highlight what they accomplished, and how it felt to make an impact on others and have influence in a meaningful way.. When leaders are asked about what motivates them, most reply that passion ...

Although this is the second episode in the series, this one is really the framing episode. Our conversation highlights why focusing on leadership and management now is important. This episode is less about specific tools and more about context-setting and forecasting.. We start out taking a longer view about public health leadership in the 21st Century. We cover the concept of "vision" in an unexpected way. The public health community has a long tradition of articulating the vision of what type of world we are working towards. Ursula, however introduces us to a different way to think about vision, that is, the vision of "how we want to get there." This framing puts a decidedly operational bent on "vision" and helps us to surface some foundational issues around public health work in the face of uncertainty.. Uncertainty was a big theme in our conversation and we spent some time discussing the types of adaptive leadership skills that are needed going forward such as agility, flexibility, ...

JERSEY CITY, N.J., Feb. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Pershing LLC (Pershing), a BNY Mellon company, today released a new study titled, Americans Crave a New Kind of Leader-And Women Are Ready to Deliver, which presents a conflicting but positive outlook on the changing role of women.. Among the key findings in the study is that while both genders feel there are not enough women in positions of power in the workplace, when asked about women in specific roles and occupations, a majority of Americans fall back on traditional gender roles.. Pershings study, drawn from more than 2,000 U.S. adults, shows that the clear majority of Americans prefer executives that utilize newer, more collaborative leadership styles. Interestingly, 7 out of 10 Americans associate these leadership styles with women. Some of what Nehemiah has to say about this theme:. Despite fierce resistance from within and without, Nehemiah and his team rebuilt the wall in 52 days. But the city was large, and the people were few (7:4). To sustain the vision and plans Nehemiah had started to implement, the city needed ongoing leadership. So Nehemiah appointed his brother to lead them (7:2). He appointed staff to maintain the city (7:3). And he repopulated Jerusalem with people (7:4-5). He repopulated the towns of Israel (7:73). He normalized Jerusalem and stabilized the land promised to his fathers.. Conclusion. Its not enough to have a committed leader. Its not enough to have a good plan. All nine themes make a difference. A football team may have the greatest quarterback who ever lived, but they will be losers unless they also have the right game plan, the right players, and call the right plays in the huddle.. Likewise, our mens discipleship programs (or any other initiative) need leaders who can articulate a vision, ...
Note that this structure doesnt carry hierarchy as much as circles of influence. The CEO focuses on influencing and developing his team leads, and they focus on spreading his work to their own teams.. This is a model that can scale, as long as each link is willing to be influenced and is able to spread that influence. However, it requires a large amount of trust, because as soon as a link is broken, it isolates an entire team from the rest of the organization. The closer the link is to the core of the organization, the greater the impact and fallout.. In a healthy organization, position will match influence. The people with the most teachability and influence in the team will be the ones entrusted to carry that vision. They will be given positions to reflect that.. However, leadership positions do not guarantee influence, nor does influence require a leadership position. How can we close that gap when position and influence have completely drifted apart? Tomorrow we will look at ways to heal a ...

As the Arctic sea ice retreats and the Arctic warms, there is a dramatic effect on the weather, due to its disruption of jet streams. As the jet stream loops farther to the north over western United States about two thirds of the nation is currently enveloped in the worst drought in over a half century. Insurers are already expecting to double last years record $10B in payouts. But vegetable farmers across drought-stricken America dont take insurance to cover them in case of drought or flooding. So this year has been particularly brutal on them. Objective:. Leadership is an integral part of clinical medicine but as junior doctors, we do not realise how many times we use our unacknowledged leadership skills to perform certain actions. As part of Leadership in clinical medicine module that I undertook, I carried out a service improvement project to bring a positive change in the organisation. Reflecting on the project as a respiratory registrar, I realise the importance of the need of incorporating the sense of developing leadership skills right from the start.. Methods:. Attending study days comprising of lectures on history, qualitative and quantitative research methods, ethics, team dynamic, leadership styles, setting up services etc, I combined quantitative (previous audit data) and qualitative data (observational and informal interviews) to improve the care for the patients with pleural effusions and measures were taken to implement the outcome.. Discussion:. As a registrar it was a challenge to bring change to already setup ...
