Lassa virus belongs to the Arenaviridae family and causes Lassa fever, also known as Lassa haemorrhagic fever (LHF). It is a haemorrhagic illness that occurs between one and three weeks after infection.. Lassa fever is a zoonotic disease, meaning it passes from animals to humans. The natural host of Lassa virus is the rodent Mastomys natalensis, otherwise known as the Natal multimammate mouse or rat.. The virus is spread when a person comes into contact with items contaminated with the rodents urine or faeces - for example, by handling objects, eating or through open wounds. It can also be inhaled.. Lassa virus can pass from person to person via bodily fluids, and can spread in healthcare settings if suitable precautions are not taken.. ...
To determine whether Lassa virus was circulating in southern Mali, we tested samples from small mammals from 3 villages, including Soromba, where in 2009 a British citizen probably contracted a lethal Lassa virus infection. We report the isolation and genetic characterization of Lassa virus from an area previously unknown for Lassa fever.
Abstract Fourteen isolates of Lassa virus were recovered in Vero cell cultures from material-serum, pleural fluid, urine, and throat washings-of four cases of Lassa fever. Viremia of 1 to 2 weeks' duration, with TCD50 titers ranging from 2 to 4.5 dex per ml, was observed. The agent did not infect the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus continuous cell lines. When newborn and adult mice were inoculated intracerebrally with Lassa virus, complement-fixing and neutralizing antibodies were detected in their serum; in addition, adult mice showed signs closely resembling those seen in adult mice inoculated with lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus. Lassa virus was isolated from urine of infected mice as late as 83 days after inoculation. Multiplication of Lassa virus in Vero cell cultures was not inhibited by the incorporation of 5-bromodeoxyuridine in the medium; hence the virus probably contains ribonucleic acid. The finding that the agent is susceptible to the action of sodium deoxycholate suggests
Lassa Virus Essay, Research Paper The Lassa virus is a vulgar virus with a high mortality rate and an expensive cure. Lassa was strange to me because I have never heard of the virus before. As I was reading in my research, I began to realize the risk the virus has on people.
Researchers have uncovered structural and functional details of a key Lassa virus protein; this new information may aid the development of vaccines.
Two days after infecting groups of guinea pigs with a lethal dose of Lassa virus, the scientists treated the rodents daily for two weeks with either ribavirin, low doses of favipiravir, or high doses of favipiravir. They also evaluated the effect of high-dose favipiravir in the rodents that began treatment five, seven or nine days after infection. All of the animals that received high-dose favipiravir were completely protected from lethal infection; animals treated seven or nine days after infection had begun showing signs of disease, but their conditions quickly improved when treatment began. Those animals in the low-dose favipiravir group showed mild to moderate signs of disease, but those symptoms resolved after about one week of treatment. The animals treated with ribavirin appeared normal during the treatment phase but developed severe disease shortly after treatment ended. ...
Davies J, Lokuge K, Glass K. Vaccine 37(26):3451-3456, 2019; 10.1016/j.vaccine.2019.05.010. Lassa fever is an acute viral illness caused by Lassa virus (LASV), a rodent-borne pathogen. LASV is endemic to much of Sub-Saharan West Africa, where seasonal outbreaks cause significant morbidity and mortality. Increased global awareness of LASV has led to development of improved diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines. As vaccine candidates are trialled, it is essential to assess the potential outcomes of introducing a LASV vaccination program in endemic regions. This study investigates the potential outcomes of routine and pulse vaccination strategies using a deterministic mathematical model that captures seasonal LASV transmission between rodents and humans. For plausible parameter values, we find that immunization of 40% of infants at 70% vaccine effectiveness achieves a population-level reduction in infectious case numbers of 30%, while coverage of 60% at 90% vaccine effectiveness achieves a 56% ...
The structure reveals how the virus evades its hosts immune system, and how it hijacks infected cells vital machinery in a process scientists call "cap-stealing". Details of the structure could guide future efforts to develop an effective anti-viral drug and vaccine.. The findings are published in this weeks issue of Nature.. Lassa virus represents a family of viruses - arenaviruses - whose natural hosts are rodents and which cause hemorrhagic fevers in Africa and South America. New varieties of arenavirus continue to emerge, such as the deadly "Lujo" virus identified recently in Zambia and South Africa.. Lassa virus infects between 100,000 and 300,000 people every year in West Africa, with an estimated 5,000 deaths according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people infected experience a mild illness, but about 20 per cent suffer a severe multisystem disease with internal bleeding and immune suppression. Around one per cent of all infections are fatal. A common ...
Lassa virus-like particles were generated to contain the major immunological determinants of the virus, resembled native virions structurally, and were immunogenic in mice. Plasmid vectors well suited for high level expression of recombinant proteins in mammalian cells through combination of rational design and proven genetic elements have resulted in high yields of LASV VLP. These vectors afford the possibility of developing a VLP-based vaccine candidate in mammalian cell systems at low cost per dose, using transient expression technologies. Despite incorporation of all LASV proteins into VLP, both glycoproteins were present at significantly higher levels in most sucrose density fractions than either NP or Z (Figure 1). Incorporation of high levels of both glycoproteins in VLP may be beneficial in a vaccine platform, as these viral components alone have been shown to confer full protection against challenge with lethal doses of live LASV in non-human primates [17-21]. Yet, despite the high ...

In January 2009, the eleventh case of Lassa fever imported to the United Kingdom was diagnosed in London. Risk assessment of 328 healthcare contacts with potential direct exposure to Lassa virus - through contact with the case or exposure to bodily fluids - was undertaken. No contacts were assessed to be at high risk of infection and no secondary clinical cases identified.
Josiah can hold his head up, and is practicing learning how to sit, although he has not yet mastered this skill on his own. Josiah is very strong and his muscles are often tight; he is receiving therapy to help him relax and control his muscles better. Josiah is nonverbal, but can still express several of his needs very well; he will cry if he wants attention and will happily reward you with a smile when you talk with or sing to him.. From someone who works with him: We have had the privilege of caring for Josiah for 3 years. He is the oldest child in our care and has been with us longer than any other child. Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.. When you ...
VR: After graduating from college I didnt know what to do. My Dad had wanted me to be a doctor, but I wasnt interested, so I was rudderless in college. I got a job as a lab technician and did a lot of reading. One day I read Fever by John Fuller, an account of the outbreak of Lassa virus in Nigeria. This got me hooked on viruses. I was looking at masters programs in the area when I happened to go to dinner one night at a college friends house by the name of Ed Kilbourne. His Dad was chair of microbiology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. I told him what I wanted to do and he suggested I apply. I got in, and the rest is history: I ended up being Peter Paleses first PhD student, and I worked on influenza viruses in his lab. My career has been mostly unplanned and somewhat accidental, but spontaneity is what has made it a blast ...

Startled by the angry blast of polite and not so polite words from the well-dressed gentleman of the group, she quickly changed her mind and turned the keys to the small subcompact over to them. Recovering from their shock at hearing such strong verbiage from the southerner, Josiah slapped Ezra on the back and they moved quickly to claim their transportation. Thankfully, hard experience taught them to travel light, so they each had one small piece of luggage. Thankfully because it was a tight enough fit in the small car already, with the trunk barely holding their bags. Ezra and JD found themselves admiring their knees near their noses while Josiah and Nathan hunched in the front seat of the car, their heads continually brushing against the ceiling. They would put up with the discomfort though; they were ...
One of the things that I liked the most is that when you hit the end of the story, you just know there are going to be major ramifications for Josiah Black yet at the same time we saw another side of the character. The enemy here wasnt the stereotypical monster that you would normally get in a title like this. Instead, despite the bad things that they did, come across as a bit sympathetic. I liked that touch because of the fact that it then in turn brought out a new side to Josiah Black. He as still as much of a bad ass as he was in the first two books but we get to see a more emotional side to him and also get to hear a little bit more of his back story too. It was quite to see another layer added to the character ...

Lassa fever is a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic illness caused by Lassa virus. Since its original discovery in 1969 in the village of Lassa in Borno State, Nigeria, there have been countless outbreaks of various magnitude and severity across West Africa. Estimates of annual incidences of Lassa fever across this region reach as high as 300,000 infections and 5,000 deaths. However due to scarce resources to diagnose the illness as well as inadequate surveillance, many cases remain unaccounted.. Lassa virus is a member of the Arenaviridae virus family. Humans contract the virus primarily through contact with the contaminated excreta of Mastomys natalensis rodents (commonly known as the Multimammate rat), which is the natural reservoir for the virus. Little is known regarding the transmission of the virus from the rodent reservoir to the human host, although there is compelling evidence that Arenaviruses are stable and infectious by the aerosol route in nonhuman primates. The rodents live in ...
Lassa fever has killed 100,000 Nigerians - Expert. Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor, a member of the National Committee on the Control of Lassa fever, says the virus had killed more than 100,000 Nigerians since the discovery of the virus in the country, calling for more funding and political will to combat the scourge.. Agbonlahor said this while presenting a paper titled "Combating Lassa fever: A National Health Challenge", organised by the University of Benin on Friday in Benin.. The expert therefore, commended the Federal Government for creating moreawareness about the disease calling for sustenance of the awareness initiative.. Also, he applauded the trials of newly developed Lassa virus vaccine in the country.. He said that the vaccine developed by a combined team from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases and the Public Health Agencies of Canada was a promising vaccine for controlling Lassa fever.. According to him, "this live and harmless vaccine, which is wrapped in a ...
The study set to assess the knowledge and attitude to Lassa fever among primary care providers. Structured questionnaires were administered to consenting primary care workers in Private and Primary health centres in Ekpoma. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 15. One hundred and thirty five (135) health workers participated in the study. One hundred and thirty one (97.0%) respondents had previously heard of Lassa fever. Overall knowledge of Lassa fever was poor for 51 (38.9%), and fair for 54 (41.2%) and good for 260 (19.8%). Hand gloves were stated as the most useful personal protective gear when dealing with a patient with Lassa fever. Fifty six (42.7 %) felt their level of knowledge was sufficient for them to safely and effectively handle a patient, 126 (96.4%) expressed their desire to know more about Lassa fever. The primary care health worker in a rural area is the one most likely to be the first point of call for persons seeking orthodox medicine. It is therefore essential ...
It is believed that most infections with Lassa virus never go beyond "flu-like" illness. Of all Arenaviruses only LCMV, Junin, Machupo, Guanarito, Lujo and Lassa viruses have demonstrated the ability to confer human disease ranging from the onset of neurologic diseases or hemorrhagic fevers of varying severity.. The clinical presentation of Lassa fever usually begins with insidious progression of fever and general malaise that can progress to more severe symptoms within 1-2 weeks. Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) is frequent and moderately severe in Lassa fever. Hemorrhaging, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia as well as neurologic signs are not quite as common in Lassa fever as compared to other hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Marburg. Viral particles can be found in the blood of patients up to three weeks after the onset of infection and Lassa virus can be recovered from the urine for several weeks more.. Common symptoms associated with cases of Lassa fever include fever, sore throat, ...

Key facts Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness, with a duration of 1-4 weeks duration that occurs in West Africa. The Lassa virus is transmitted to humans via contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces. Person-to-person infections and laboratory transmission can also
In a patient transferred from Togo to Cologne, Germany, Lassa fever was diagnosed 12 days post mortem. Sixty-two contacts in Cologne were categorised according to the level of exposure, and gradual infection control measures were applied. No clinical signs of Lassa virus infection or Lassa specific antibodies were observed in the 62 contacts. Thirty-three individuals had direct contact to blood, other body fluids or tissue of the patients. Notably, with standard precautions, no transmission occurred between the index patient and healthcare workers. However, one secondary infection occurred in an undertaker exposed to the corpse in Rhineland-Palatinate, who was treated on the isolation unit at the University Hospital of Frankfurt. After German authorities raised an alert regarding the imported Lassa fever case, an American healthcare worker who had cared for the index patient in Togo, and who presented with diarrhoea, vomiting and fever, was placed in isolation and medevacked to the United States. The
According to him, "we demonstrated and emphasised to the general public that all it takes to see a doctor is simply the decision to do so; we also organised a press conference on Lassa fever outbreak and in liaison with other stakeholders, ensured that Enugu State was Lassa free, while our committee on hemorrhagic fever worked closely with the state ministry of health and management of all hospitals to fight Lassa.". He also disclosed that the association was actively involved in the fight against quacks and impersonation of the medical profession by disgruntled elements, adding that the leadership during the period launched into the radio and TV waves, jingles on the best way to assess quality health care services and the need to make a qualified medical doctor the point of call on health issues.. He recalled that during their courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, at the Government House, the NMA handed a framework document on the road map towards effective health ...

Funmi,. Its good to be loyal. But when lives are being lost, let us call a spade a spade. MOH has been deafeningly silent on Lassa Fever. Not the same as when Ebola was the issue. HEre is why a lot of noise is good around Lassa fever. First, it will keep the masses on the alert. Second, it will ensure dissemination of public health messages about symptoms, what to do when you have symptoms. Three, it will alert the medical community from doctors to nurses. Four, it will foster discussions at state and local levels about allocation of resources specially for this issue. Now, what is the role of the feds? The role of the federal government led by PMB and his minister for health is to initiate this communication action plan, define a coordinating strategy for collecting surveillance data (a key element in owning and subduing epidemics), set up a coordination strategy that is known to health officials, other officials and the general public, ascertain where resources are needed, and mobilize ...
Plays a crucial role in virion assembly and budding. Expressed late in the virus life cycle, it acts as an inhibitor of viral transcription and RNA synthesis by interacting with the viral polymerase L (By similarity). Presumably recruits the NP encapsidated genome to cellular membranes at budding sites via direct interaction with NP. Plays critical roles in the final steps of viral release by interacting with host TSG101, a member of the vacuolar protein-sorting pathway and using other cellular host proteins involved in vesicle formation pathway. The budding of the virus progeny occurs after association of protein Z with the viral glycoprotein complex SSP-GP1-GP2 at the cell periphery, step that requires myristoylation of protein Z. Also selectively represses protein production by associating with host eIF4E.

During not to the nineteenth century Sierra Leone was a pioneer of western style education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fourah Bay College, the first tertiary education institute in the region, was founded in 1827, and the first boys school, Sierra Leone Grammar School, and the first girls school, Annie Walsh Memorial School, in the region founded in 1845 and 1849 respectively. The country was an important centre in training teachers, doctors and administrators for whole of West Africa in the first half of the nineteenth century.[4] The education system that developed in Sierra Leone during the nineteenth and twentieth century was styled on the British education system. It was elitist in nature aimed at urban middle class and focused on the academically gifted who would go on to tertiary education before taking up positions as civil servants in the government. During this period the majority of the population were not formally educated or only a couple of years of primary education. When Sierra Leone ...
