Kindergarten- Grade 2 materials for the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program have already been developed and piloted in New York City schools and schools in six other states. Pilot data show CKLA students made statistically significant greater gains in reading achievement, compared to control students using other approaches (balanced literacy and Reading First programs).. Funding is needed to develop and field test CKLA materials for later elementary grades, with immediate focus on completing materials for Grade 3 and preschool. The program consists of two parts: (1) a superior decoding and encoding phonics-based program, and (2) a carefully planned sequence of engaging texts, initially presented orally, designed to impart the knowledge and vocabulary most critical to comprehension and the narrowing of achievement gaps. Relevant background knowledge increases fluency, broadens vocabulary, and enables deeper comprehension. CKLA embeds the teaching of content within the language arts block, ...

We worked on our projects and finished making the board for our board games. Many of us were also waiting for the game pieces for our board games to print out on the 3D printer so we could color them. We tested out each others games by playing them and giving them constructive criticism. Then, we all fixed the problems they we were having with our board game. This week, we all wrote a reflection essay about our project. This was an eventful week for 8th grade!. Recent News by Ben D. This week in Language Arts, we are preparing to start To Kill a Mockingbird. We have started working on the vocabulary words for Chapter One and Chapter Two by learning the definitions and writing our own context sentences on them. There hasnt been much going on since our week was only four days long because of parent-teacher conference day. However, we have been reviewing the proper usage of commas this week. In a sentence, a comma indicates a pause, and it can be used to set off an opener, closer, interruptor, ...

The words your child knows and can use in order to communicate or read are defined as his vocabulary. By increasing the size of your childs vocabulary, you can effectively increase the level at which your child is capable of reading, writing, and speaking.. The NRP says "Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language." Children learn the words through everyday conversation with peers, adults, through shows they watch, and through listening to books that are read aloud.. Therefore, one of the easiest ways to increase your childs vocabulary is to read aloud to him on a daily basis. You can also use new, unfamiliar words in conversations with your child. Children learn new words best when the words are used in context, so using new words appropriately and purposefully in conversation will help convey meaning, pronunciation, and will expand your childs vocabulary.. "Specific word instruction, or teaching individual words, can ...

I have several students who are answering a how question with a why response. Our students with language delays, autism, and 2nd language learners often have trouble with these skills. "How" and "Why" questions are question forms that require a higher level of thinking and language skills to formulate responses. The students often need the ability to problem solve or take on another perspective when answering them. When looking through the Language Arts section of the "Common Core Standards" I discovered this would be a skill they would need. Like many of you, I am rethinking what is most valuable to my students as we try to align curriculum with the "Common Core Standards". I made task cards to specifically address how and why question forms from a given text.. Students may require some direct teaching on the differences between how and why questions. How question have a few variations. It may require a student to tell how something is done in steps, how something is done descriptively, the ...
