Kindergarten- Grade 2 materials for the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program have already been developed and piloted in New York City schools and schools in six other states. Pilot data show CKLA students made statistically significant greater gains in reading achievement, compared to control students using other approaches (balanced literacy and Reading First programs).. Funding is needed to develop and field test CKLA materials for later elementary grades, with immediate focus on completing materials for Grade 3 and preschool. The program consists of two parts: (1) a superior decoding and encoding phonics-based program, and (2) a carefully planned sequence of engaging texts, initially presented orally, designed to impart the knowledge and vocabulary most critical to comprehension and the narrowing of achievement gaps. The words your child knows and can use in order to communicate or read are defined as his vocabulary. By increasing the size of your childs vocabulary, you can effectively increase the level at which your child is capable of reading, writing, and speaking.. The NRP says Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Children learn the words through everyday conversation with peers, adults, through shows they watch, and through listening to books that are read aloud.. Therefore, one of the easiest ways to increase your childs vocabulary is to read aloud to him on a daily basis. You can also use new, unfamiliar words in conversations with your child. Children learn new words best when the words are used in context, so using new words appropriately and purposefully in conversation will help convey meaning, pronunciation, and will expand your childs vocabulary.. Specific word instruction, or teaching individual words, can ...

My six-year-old daughter has a very impressive 106 in math and 100s in social studies and spelling. She has As in reading and handwriting, although Id like to see the handwriting point grade come up. There is some room for improvement in the language arts grade, but it will be very simple to help her. In fact, Ive already seen some improvement in her skills this very day. They are working on sentence structure right now. My daughter has a precious thought pattern but needs to work on constructing her sentences properly. Heres all that means for now: a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and no other capital letters in the sentence, spaces between the words, and a period at the end of the sentence. (See, I said that was simple!) She did beautifully on copying some phrases tonight. JACKSON -- Mississippi has an ambitious plan to close academic achievement gaps among student groups by 2025, but last years results wont help -- most gaps grew wider. Black and Hispanic students fell further behind their white counterparts in proficiency in English language arts and math. Poor students fell further behind those who arent poor. And students with disabilities fell further behind students without disabilities. Its the second year the state has produced a report on achievement divides, part a federal push to make sure high scores among some students dont disguise problems among disadvantaged groups. State Superintendent Carey Wright, in a Board of Education meeting earlier this month when the data was released, urged districts to use the data to target areas for improvement. Behind every data point, theres a face, Wright said. Proficiency levels for all those groups actually rose on the English and math tests, as was expected in the second year of the Mississippi Academic ...

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Liberty Middle School Language Arts teacher and Livingston resident Kimberly DeMeo has published a book called One Little Egg on In-Vitro Fertilization and Egg Donation, and since May 17 its already sold out twice on Amazon.com. DeMeo went to the bookstore last year looking for a childrens book on IVF and Egg donation. She and her husband, Jason, proud parents of 19-month-old twins Miranda and Sydney, had taken a long and difficult road to parenthood, and had been blessed with two healthy daughters. Wanting to share with the girls the incredible and miraculous process that had helped bring them into the world, Kim sought out a book that she could read to them. She was surprised to find that few even existed. In response to the lack of kid friendly books on IVF, particularly egg donors, and recognizing that the number of IVF donor births were increasing, DeMeo was inspired to write her own book for her daughters, and One Little Egg was born.. I had never planned on ...

How did it form? (Back to a study of geology and earth science.) The list seems endless. Fossils are not only attention-getters; they are also incredibly versatile as a teaching tool. Fossils make a great theme for integrated curriculum studies.. If you get creative, there are all types of stories to be written: factual, imaginative, and even poetry. Imaginations run wild when you hold the fossil of a long-extinct species in your hand. You could write tales of life on the ancient sea floor, or how that particular animal met its demise and became the fossil you are holding today. You could create an entire language arts curriculum around it!. If it s math you d like to kick into gear, working with the geologic time periods offers opportunities for scientific notation, exponents, scale (when placing them on a timeline), and comparisons between lifespan lengths. Then there are the geometric qualities of the shells and chitinous exoskeletons. You could study fractals or tessellations, just to name a ...

When Mindy Chen hits a passage in a violin piece by Kreisler or Paganini that requires her to send her bow in light staccato across the strings, she sometimes thinks of bouncing a ball and watching her yellow Labrador puppy, Harmony, chase after it. In June, she won the Grand Prize in the youth category (ages 10 to 16) of the Stradivarius International Violin Competition in Salt Lake City. Social studies and language arts are fine, she says, but I hate math. On one wall of her bedroom theres a medal commemorating her appearance on From the Top, the National Public Radio show that celebrates gifted young musicians. Like many whose talent and hard work have carried them so far at such a young age, Mindy is a blend of adult capabilities and childish impulsiveness and exuberance. On a recent Saturday morning, she was dressed in a scarlet evening gown and standing on a concert hall stage at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Mindy, her mother and her teacher were there for a practice go at
Previous work has suggested the superiority of a combined approach. Hager et al,17 in a recent review of the literature, identified the relative advantages of a combined approach, including a single anesthetic, fewer visits, and easier scheduling. There are several randomized controlled clinical trials that have been performed comparing combined and staged procedures for the treatment of venous disease. The AVULS trial (Ambulatory Varicosity Avulsion Later or Synchronized) randomized 101 patients to either combined ablation and phlebectomy or delayed phlebectomy after ablation.4 Importantly, this trial demonstrated no major differences in complications and significantly greater VCSS improvement and Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire score (AVVQ) improvement at early follow-up. Importantly, these differences in the PROs using the AVVQ were not significant in longer follow-up beyond 6 weeks (Lane et al4 2015). Similarly, El-Sheikha et al5 randomized 50 patients to receive either combined ...

The ADHD Voices (Voices On Identity, Childhood, Ethics and Stimulants) report was published yesterday and received a significant amount of press coverage. The outcomes of this work are a 46-page report and 18-minute video, that aim to inspire a fresh public conversation about the ethics of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis and stimulant drug treatments [read the full story…]. ...
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood is associated with impairment of multiple aspects of cognition which adversely affect the individuals everyday functioning. However, little is known about how these impairments are intertwined. This study explores whether impairments in basic processes (processing speed and distractibility) in adults with ADHD explain impairments in higher order functions, namely executive functions, memory, and complex attention. Furthermore, it is explored whether pharmacological treatment with methylphenidate (MPH) affects basic processes and higher order functions. A between-subjects design compared patients with ADHD without stimulant drug treatment (N = 55) and patients with ADHD treated with MPH (N = 31) with a healthy control group (N = 80). A neuropsychological test battery assessing basic processes and higher order functions was administered. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the contribution of basic ...

This list contains French words with their English translations. The words included here are those you are likely to find in genealogical sources. If the word you are looking for is not on this list, please consult a French-English dictionary. (See the Additional Resources section below.) The French language is a Romance language derived from Latin. Although English is a Germanic language, it has many words of Latin and French derivation. Thus, many French words are similar to words in English but often have different meanings. French is spoken in France; Quebec and other areas of Canada; Luxembourg; southern Belgium; southwestern Switzerland; northern and central Africa; some islands in the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Caribbean Sea; southeast Asia; and other areas formerly colonized or influenced by the French. Between about 1800 and 1812, French was also used in records of the Rhineland area of Germany, northern Belgium, and the Netherlands. In addition, French is found in some early ...

previous post , next post » The recent discussion of how to pronounce Uyghur, and especially the treatment of the medial consonant, brought up the case of yoghurt/yogurt, which in French is yaourt - and today on the Omniglot Blog the Word of the Day is yaourter, to yoghurt, which is said to be. a French word for the way people attempt to speak or sing in a foreign language that they dont know very well. Often they mishear and misinterpret the word or lyrics and substitute them with familiar words.. Some of the comments on the Omniglot post suggest that the English equivalent is the noun mondegreen. Ive never heard anyone verbing mondegreen, and a bit of web search doesnt turn up much except for the http://twitter.com/mondegreened (which Im sorry to say belong to someone named Julian, not Ed), and a post on The mondegreening of America, and a few other things.. But it seems that the key thing about the French word is the nonsense imitation of another language, which is more like ...
An augmented transition network or ATN is a type of graph theoretic structure used in the operational definition of formal languages, used especially in parsing relatively complex natural languages, and having wide application in artificial intelligence. An ATN can, theoretically, analyze the structure of any sentence, however complicated. ATN are modified transition networks and an extension of RTNs[citation needed]. ATNs build on the idea of using finite state machines (Markov model) to parse sentences. W. A. Woods in Transition Network Grammars for Natural Language Analysis claims that by adding a recursive mechanism to a finite state model, parsing can be achieved much more efficiently. Instead of building an automaton for a particular sentence, a collection of transition graphs are built. A grammatically correct sentence is parsed by reaching a final state in any state graph. Transitions between these graphs are simply subroutine calls from one state to any initial state on any graph in ...

This course is designed for students who want to hone their reasoning skills. So it teaches skills everyone needs. Because we will choose many of our examples from mathematics and computing, students with interest in those areas will find that this class (in contrast to most other logic classes) will show them how to solve problems that they care about. We will also emphasize the relationship between English and the formal languages of logic. So students who are interested in linguistics should find it relevant ...
This research will investigate the effect of a new cognitive intervention designed to improve basic functional communication abilities. The treatment will be nonverbal and involve computer and paperbased tasks ordered hierarchically from basic to more complex tasks. Six to eight participants will take part. All their sessions will take place in their own home. For some this may be a care home. They will first complete a diagnostic communication assessment in order for baseline abilities to be established. Further formal language and cognitive assessments will be conducted over a period of 6 weeks. A relative/friend will complete a questionnaires about mood/communication. The PwGA will also be videoed interacting with the research student e.g. looking at a magazine, completing a jigsaw, answering questions and making choices non-verbally ...
