Leonotis leonurus, also known as lions tail and wild dagga, is a plant species in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. The plant is a broadleaf evergreen large shrub native to South Africa and southern Africa, where it is very common.[2] It is known for its medicinal and mild psychoactive properties. The main psychoactive component of Leonotis leonurus is claimed to be leonurine,[3] even though leonurine has never been found in the plant using chemical analysis.[4] Like other plants in the mint family, it also contains marrubiim. The name wild dagga links it closely to cannabis as dagga derived from the Khoikhoi dachab is an indigenous South African name for cannabis species.[5] This name may be a misnomer, as no part of the plant is used as a hallucinogen.[6] ...

Lamium purpureum, known as red dead-nettle, purple dead-nettle, red henbit, purple archangel, or velikdenche, is a herbaceous flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. It grows to 5-20 cm (rarely 30 cm) in height. The leaves have fine hairs, are green at the bottom and shade to purplish at the top; they are 2-4 cm long and broad, with a 1-2 cm petiole (leaf stalk), and wavy to serrated margins. The zygomorphic flowers are bright red-purple, with a top hood-like petal, two lower lip petal lobes and minute fang-like lobes between. The corolla shows a line of hairs near the base of the tube. They may be produced throughout the year, including mild weather in winter. This allows bees to gather its nectar for food when few other nectar sources are available. It is also a prominent source of pollen for bees in March/April (in UK), when bees need the pollen as protein to build up their nest. It is often found alongside Henbit Dead-nettle (Lamium amplexicaule), which is easily mistaken for it since ...
The origin of these Gloxinia crassifolia is indeed a mystery. Is it a type come spontaneously, and which has thus produced itself alone? I do not think so, for the first Gloxinia (Ligeria) crassifolia had drooping flowers, and their general appearance resembled that of the Gloxinia pyramidalis. Did the intervention of the latter take place at the opportune moment, and with what variety? Or was it Rossiaud who, wishing to fertilise the Gloxinia pyramidalis, did so with the Gloxinia (Ligeria) obtained direct from Brazil or already improved on by him? At any rate, one thing is certain, and that is that the Gloxinia crassifolia, although improved, have never allowed themselves to be fertilised by the Sinningias or their descendants. I have tried this operation several hundreds of times, but without success, and I leave it to others to tell us when they have proved successful.. The type crassifolia has at no time had dotted flowers; it is fixed and unchangeable; the colours have been improved, and, ...

In the developing countries of tropical regions, mycotic infections are common cause of skin diseases. The use of medicinal plants in the treatment of skin diseases including mycotic infections is an age-old practice in many parts of the world. The drugs used against dermatophytosis have several side effects, but limited efficacy. There is therefore a distinct need for discovery of new, safer and more effective antifungal agents. Medicinal plants used in traditional folk medicine may help us to overcome the growing problem of resistance to antifungal drugs and also their relative toxicity. In this study, in vitro antifungal activity of Pogostemon parviflorus leaf extracts were evaluated against three different genera of dermatophytes including Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton, using the agar dilution method. Pogostemon parviflorus Benth. belongs to Labiatae family. The ethanolic extract of Pogostemon parviflorus leaf inhibited the growth of tested dermatophytes at different concentrations.

Three easily confused springtime flowers are commonly seen in Midwestern lawns, gardens, fields, empty lots, and other untended, disturbed-habitat locations: purple deadnettle (Lamium purpureum), henbit (Lamium amplexicaule), and creeping Charlie (Glechoma hederacea). While these flowers are similar, they are actually pretty distinct on close inspection. Below we have provided illustrations of each of these plants, along with comments on how to identify them.. These plants are invasive species, whatever that means. We will point out: 1) so were oak trees, once, and 2) the term is applied by the most invasive species our planet has ever seen. Anyway, there is no getting these plants out of the Midwest (or anywhere else) now, so we might as well learn to enjoy their beauty.. ...

Phylogeny reconstruction at the species level, especially using organellar markers, is often complicated by problems such as incomplete lineage sorting and interspecific hybridization. Single-copy nuclear genes may be useful for these cases because they have higher mutation rates and are biparentally inherited. One plant group in which hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting have been proposed based on analyses of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid data is a clade of mints from the southeastern United States: Conradina and the related genera Dicerandra, Piloblephis, Stachydeoma, and Clinopodium (Lamiaceae). To clarify the phylogeny in this clade and investigate the possibility of incomplete lineage sorting and interspecific hybridization, we isolated three members of the nuclear GapC gene family and used two to reconstruct phylogeny. Separate phylogenetic analyses of the two GapC loci did not resolve species relationships. We then used two approaches to concatenate the two ...

Recent investigations of Lamiaceae family essential oil storage have shown that most of the oil is found in peltate glandular trichomes on the leaf surface. The effect of supercritical CO2 on the peltate glands was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy. It was observed that exposure to supercritical CO2 led to disruption of the peltate glands and essential oil release. This phenomenon was used as a basic hypothesis of the mathematical model of the supercritical fluid extraction with CO2. The model was applied to simulate basil, rosemary, marjoram and pennyroyal supercritical CO2 extraction on the existing experimental data. An average deviation from the experimental data was less than 0.83%. The ...
Both lemon balm oil, and lemon balm essential oil contain lemon balm, but that is where the similarities end.. Each product is very different from the other. When shopping, you will want to be sure that you are buying the right product for the right need. Lemon Balm is also known as Melissa from its Latin name Melissa officinalis. Lemon balm oil is made by soaking the lemon balm herb in a carrier oil. A carrier oil can be sweet almond, apricot, sesame, or olive. Carrier oils are chosen for their skin healing properties as well. This oil contains the medicinal benefits of lemon balm, such as eugenol for herpes, shingles, and cold sores. The oil is also used for other viral skin infections.. Most lemon balm oils are made using the cold pressed method. This method is the best for extraction of the herb, with no damage to the herb or the oil. Hot pressing can cause damage to the natural chemicals in both the oil and the herb.. The scientific name Melissa comes from the Greek and means honey-bee. It refers to the fact that lemon balm is very attractive to bees. In earlier times, beekeepers liked to plant lemon balm around their hives and rubbed hives with lemon balm oil to cleanse them.. The properties of lemon balm were known in antiquity, although some of its uses, such as for scorpion stings, were based on erroneous beliefs. But the 1st century Greek physician Dioscorides was right when he recommended lemon balm for intestinal disorders. The Persian physician Avicenna (980-1037) recognized the power of lemon balm to lighten the mood, while Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) said of its action on the heart:. The remedy makes the heart joyful.. The Carmelites of the French abbey St. Juste added this herb to their Carmelite water, which they manufactured under the name Eau de Carnes for Charles V of France (1228-1380), for colds and gastrointestinal problems.. The English author, architect and landscape gardener John ...
In the study of the suppressive compounds of methanol extract re-extracted against furylfuramide in the dichloromethane fraction isolated by SiO(2) column chromatography and identified as 7,4′-di-O-methyleriodictyol (1), 7, 3′,4′-tri-O-methyleriodictyol (2), and 3,7,4′-tri-O-methylkaempferol (3) and three flavonoids, ombuine (4), pachypodol (5), and kumatakenin (6), isolated and identified from the dichrolomethane fraction, showed that these compounds were assayed with activated Trp-P-1, and the suppressed effects of these compounds were further decreased when compared to Trp-P-1. Lemon balm is a cheerful, lemon-scented herb that comes from the Lamiaceae family, a relative of both mint and rosemary. The herb is native to Europe, North America, and West Asia, though today, it is grown around the world. Why You Might Find it Helpful: Lemon balm has been known to be a great herb to improve mood, r
Lemon balm produces chemicals to not only support its own life, but to support yours too. But why does lemon balm produce these chemicals? The triterpenes produced by the plant are intended to help the plant survive. They are responsible for aiding the survival of this herb by attracting pollinators that are essential for its reproduction. Terpenes also play another role in benefiting this herb. The strong flavor can deter herbivorous insects from munching (Kennedy, Wightman 2011). Bugs are deterred by the citronellal present in the leaves. This is the same reason lemon balm makes a great mosquito repellent if you crush the leaves and rub them on your skin. Lemon balm also produces caffeic and rosmarinic acids, which both offer antibacterial and antiviral properties for the plant and for humans ingesting it (Ramanauskienė K. 2015). These properties have aided the growth and survival of this herb by fighting off possible treats and protecting the membrane of its cells.. Safe dosages of lemon ...
Our observations with peppermint confirm earlier findings for Lamiaceae species (Croteau et al., 1981; Maffei et al., 1986, 1989;Colson et al., 1993; Werker et al., 1993) that continuous initiation of new peltate glands results in a continuous increase in gland number throughout the period of leaf expansion. Gland formation stops with completion of leaf growth. We also found that gland densities and regions of gland formation are not uniformly distributed on the leaf surface, with prolonged gland initiation and the largest numbers of glands occurring in abaxial basal and abaxial middle zones. The early termination of gland initiation in the apical zone probably reflects regional maturation of the epidermis because cessation of gland formation progresses in a basipetal pattern, similar to the pattern of maturation in typical Eudicot leaves (Esau, 1977; Werker et al., 1993), and because the apical region of expanding mint leaves attains the dark green color and relatively rigid texture of mature ...

When first applied, I am struck with a stab of clean bergamot which recedes almost instantly, making way for a very sharp collection of florals. My initial observation is that there is a likeness to the opening spritz of Narciso Rodriguez For Her... it is much like the sensation of drawing a thick silk ribbon across the back of ones neck... icy cool, yet humming with warmth. Rose absolute and jasmine pirouette across the topnotes, but then a dirtiness emerges from below as the famed patchouli ascends to the throne at the heart of this scent. And there it stays, drawing in the satellite accords around it like minions. Whilst patchouli is king here, I find White Patchouli a rather linear fragrance... perhaps after an hour or so, I detect a small shift towards a puff of birchwood and incense, but both are rather lightweight and superficial. I am surprised to find that this perfumes persistence is rather poor - at least on my skin. Whilst Id strongly advise that it be tried and worn by both ...

Lemon balm is a popular herb used by millions around the world. Scientists call it melissa officinalis (the word melissa comes from the Greek word meaning honey bee), but it also goes by many other names, including nectar of life, cure-all, balm mint or simply, honey plant.. Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and is native to Southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Central Asia. It is green in color and has small, heart-shaped leaves with clusters of white and yellow flowers. Lemon balm is considered a stress-reducing herb and has been used for medicinal purposes for more than 500 years. There are several studies showing that lemon balm may reduce overall stress and anxiety symptoms. It is believed that lemon balm helps increase a brain chemical called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This chemical pathway plays an important role in the treatment of anxiety and is actually targeted by some prescription medications that treat stress and anxiety symptoms. A 2017 study in ...
Background and purpose: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder with several complications, such as delayed wound healing. As an initial part of a revisional study based on the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae), extensive field studies, herbarium and literature surveys, and multivariate analysis have been conducted on the basis of the Salvia euphratica sensu lato (S. cerino-pruinosa, S. euphratica, S. leiocalycina, and S. pseudeuphratica) and its closely related species (S. kronenburgii and S. sericeo-tomentosa) in order to understand their taxonomic status. For the multivariate analysis, 35 OTUs (Operational Taxonomic Units) representing 24 populations of the species were investigated and scored on the basis of 25 character states by means of MVSP software. Principle coordinate analysis (PCO) utilizing the Gower coefficient on standardized data was conducted on the specimens to see their distribution as 3-dimensional plots. In the Flora of Turkey, S. euphratica, S. kronenburgii, and S. sericeo-tomentosa were evaluated as separate species. On the other hand, S. cerino-pruinosa and S. pseudeuphratica were regarded as ...
Abstract: We show that the microwave (MW) spectra in semiconductor-nanowire-based transmon qubits provide a strong signature of the presence of Majorana bound states in the junction. This occurs as an external magnetic field tunes the wire into the topological regime and the energy splitting of the emergent Majorana modes oscillates around zero energy owing to spatial overlap in finite-length wires. In particular, we discuss how the zero-energy fermion parity crossings arising from Majorana oscillations result in distinct spectroscopic features. In split-junction geometries, the plasma mode couples to the phase-dispersing subgap levels resulting from Majorana hybridization via a Jaynes-Cummings-like interaction. As a consequence of this interaction, higher order plasma excitations in the junction inherit Majorana properties, including the $4\pi$ effect. Our results, based on a fully microscopic description of the junction, suggest that MW spectroscopy of nanowire-based transmon qubits provides ...
