Lonar Lake is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument saline soda lake located at Lonar in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, India, which was created by a meteor impact during the Pleistocene Epoch and it is the only known hyper velocity impact crater in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth. This lake, which lies in a basalt impact structure, is both saline and alkaline in nature. Geologists, ecologists, archaeologists, naturalists and astronomers have published studies of various aspects of this crater lake ecosystem. Lonar Lake has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometres (3,900 ft) and is about 137 metres (449 ft) below the crater rim. The meteor crater rim is about 1.8 kilometres (5,900 ft) in diameter. Lake sediments constitute an important compartment in the carbon cycle of lakes, by burying carbon over geological timescales and by production and emission of greenhouse gases. The degradation of organic carbon (OC) in lake sediments is linked to both temperature and oxygen (O-2), but the interactive nature of this regulation has not been studied in lake sediments in a quantitative way. We present the first systematic investigation of the effects of temperature on the apparent respiratory quotient (RQ, i.e., the molar ratio between carbon dioxide (CO2) production and O-2 consumption) in two contrasting lake sediments. Laboratory incubations of sediment cores of a humic lake and an eutrophic lake across a 1-21 degrees C temperature gradient over 157days revealed that both CO2 production and O-2 consumption were positively, exponentially, and similarly dependent on temperature. The article is focused on the assessment of changes in the average annual water levels of large lakes of the planet in the changing climate conditions characteristic of the recent decades. Eight large lakes, i.e.Baikal, Balkhash, Superior, Issyk-Kul, Ladoga, Onega, Ontario, and Erie, located on the territory of Eurasia and North America, were chosen as the research objects. They were selected because of the availability of a long-term observations series of the water level. As is known, long-term changes in the lakes water level result from variation in the water volume. The latter depends on the ratios between the water balance components of the lake that have developed during a given year, which, in turn, reflect the climatic conditions of the respective years. The features of the water balance structure of the above-mentioned lakes and the intra-annual course of the water level are considered. In large lakes around the world, shifts in ecological communities are often associated with water depth. This suggests that there may be concomitant changes in patterns of resource allocation. Using Lake Superior as an example, we explored this idea through stable isotope analyses of 14 major fish taxa. Patterns in carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios revealed use of littoral and profundal benthos among individuals of most taxa analyzed. Use of benthos was strongest among nearshore demersal species and weakest among planktivores, and declined with depth of habitat. Isotope mixing model results indicated that benthic food web pathways were most important in nearshore fish species, whereas offshore pelagic and profundal species used planktonic pathways. These patterns appear to be governed by two key processes: high benthic production in nearshore waters and diel vertical migration among offshore invertebrates and fish. The Bosten Lake is the largest inland freshwater lake of China, in which water level and salinity fluctuate due to the imbalance between inflows and outflows under climate change and anthropogenic activities. This paper employed system dynamics as an effective methodology to grasp the regulation rules for sustainable freshwater management of the Bosten Lake. Results show the following. (1) Changing of lake water salinity is not only affected by the salinity of water entering and leaving, but is mostly a result of water exchange rate (WER) and the lake level fluctuation. (2) According to the estimated regime of lake level regulations, it is attested that surface water inflow must be larger than outflow about 10.6 × 108 m3 every year. Ive always wondered if Ancient lakes referred to 1) the lakes (such as Soap Lake) that now occupy depressions that were scoured out by the Missoula floods 12-15 thousand years ago (Pleistocene), or 2) the much more ancient lakes that existed in that area due to the damming of drainages by lava flows of the Columbia River Basalt around 15 million years ago (Miocene). Evidence for the much more ancient basalt-dammed lakes consists of thick deposits of diatomite that crop out (and are mined) along Silica Rd. between I-90 and the Gorge concert venue. The diatomite is composed of the skeletons of gazillions of diatoms that lived (and died, obviously) in the lakes. While the Pleistocene ancient lakes formed by the Missoula floods are an interesting feature of the area, they have no affect on terroir. Beginning in 1975, Florida reclamation rules set criteria for phosphate created lakes aiming to approximate the structure of natural lakes, and emphasizing extensive littoral zones with both emergent and submersed vegetation. Lake development relative to lake age and design were examined for 22 phosphate lakes representing a 40-year age trajectory, utilizing water quality and benthic invertebrate communities from littoral and deep-water locations (Chapter 1). Proposals to extend commercial shipping in the St. Marys River (connecting Lakes Superior and Huron) to include winter months have raised concerns regarding its effect on lake herring (Coregonus artedi). Because lake herring spawn in fall and their eggs overwinter in the river and hatch in spring, their hatching success could be impacted by early opening of the locks in spring. Our laboratory studies showed that under the range of turbidities expected in the river due to vessel traffic, lake herring eggs hatched and larvae fed adequately. Field incubation studies produced about 75% survival and 70% hatching success of lake herring eggs at two of three study sites. Collections in the river throughout the month following ice-out showed that sufficient plankton of appropriate size were available to ensure growth and survival of larval lake herring. Manchar Lake is the largest fresh water lake in Pakistan, situated in Jamshoro District. It was created in the 1930 when the Sukkur Barrage was constructed on the river Indus. It is a vast natural depression flanked by Khirthar range in the west, Lakhi hills in south and river Indus in the east. On the north eastern side is the protective embankment. The lake is fed by two canals, the Aral Wah and the Danister from the river Indus. The lake also collects water from numerous small streams in the Khirthar Mountains. Thirteen lakes in Mount Rainier National Park were evaluated for general chemical characteristics, sensitivity to acidification by acidic precipitation, and degree of existing acidification. The lakes studies were Allen, one of the Chenuis group, Crescent , Crystal, Eleanor, Fan, one of the Golden group, Marsh, Mowich, Mystic, Shriner, and two unnamed lakes. The lakes were sampled in August 1983. Specific conductance values were generally 21 microsiemens/cm at 25 C or less, and dissolved solids concentrations were generally 20 mg/L or less. The major cations were calcium and sodium, and the major anion was bicarbonate. Alkalinity concentrations ranged from 2.1 to 9.0 mg/L in 12 of the lakes. Allen Lake was the exception, having an alkalinity concentration of 27 mg/L. The pH values for all of the lakes ranged from 5.8 to 6.5. Lake aeration is a fishery enhancement technique used to maintain dissolved oxygen levels in eutrophic lakes prone to winterkill. Eight stocked lakes that are susceptible to winterkill are aerated annually in the Northwest Region. The aerated lakes are Swan, Spring, Moonshine, Cummings, Figure Eight, Cecil Thompson Park Pond, East Dollar and Sulphur. Since 1912 concentrations of the major anions and cations (except calcium) in Bear Lake water have shown a steady decrease which has been attributed to a dilution of Bear Lake by Bear River water, Bear Lake having been used as a reservoir for Bear River water since 1918. This study examined the changes which have occurred in Bear Lake water chemistry since 1912 and tested the validity of the dilution theory. Simple water and salinity budgets were determined for the Bear Lake system and used to simulate the effect of Bear River storage patterns since 1918 on the concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, and sulfate in Bear Lake. The Lake Champlain Basin Program provides funding to support two aspects of cyanobacteria monitoring on Lake Champlain: through the Lake Champlain Long-Term Monitoring Program, in partnership with VT Agency of Natural Resources, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and SUNY Plattsburgh. Trained staff collect samples from relatively deep locations from a dozen sites around Lake Champlain. If a site has a full bloom or is developing a bloom, samples are collected and sent to the VT Department of Health Laboratory in Burlington for toxin analysis, and the cyanobacteria species is identified. Norfork Lake is located in north central Arkansas and extends up to northern Missouri. Most of the Lake is near Mountain Home, Arkansas which is the hub of activity in the area. The Corps of Engineers Lake consists of about 30,000 acres depending on lake level and has about 500 miles of shore line. It approaches 200 feet in depth and is a very clear and relatively unpolluted lake fed by the North Fork River. It is not connected to any of the other major confinement lakes in the area. Norfork was a WPA project of the 1940s and most of the structure and buildings were removed before flooding. The aim of this project is to study the nitrate levels of the treated water flowing into Jakkur Lake in Bangalore, from the treatment plant situated at the inlet to the lake, and thereby evaluate the function of the lake as for secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment as well as an infiltration basin. Obtained nitrate levels are used as indicators to study the wastewater flow in the lake, and to find other possible inflows of sewage which can affect the lakes total treatment efficiency. A literature study is done on wetlands and on groundwater recharge through infiltration basins, and the possibility of recharging groundwater below Jakkur Lake is evaluated. Water samples are collected around and in the lake and the samples are tested for nitrate, pH and total dissolved solids. Abstract. Uncertainties in the magnitude and seasonality of various gas emission modes, particularly among different lake types, limit our ability to estimate methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from northern lakes. Here we assessed the relationship between CH4 and CO2 emission modes in 40 lakes along a latitudinal transect in Alaska to lakes physicochemical properties and geographic characteristics, including permafrost soil type surrounding lakes. Emission modes included direct ebullition, diffusion, storage flux, and a newly identified ice-bubble storage (IBS) flux. We found that all lakes were net sources of atmospheric CH4 and CO2, but the climate warming impact of lake CH4 emissions was 2 times higher than that of CO2. Ebullition and diffusion were the dominant modes of CH4 and CO2 emissions, respectively. The Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group (MCG) is an archaeal lineage whose members are widespread and abundant in marine sediments. MCG archaea have also been consistently found in stratified euxinic lakes. In this work, we have studied archaeal communities in three karstic lakes to reveal potential habitat segregation of MCG subgroups between planktonic and sediment compartments. In the studied lakes, archaeal assemblages were strikingly similar to those of the marine subsurface with predominance of uncultured Halobacteria in the plankton and Thermoplasmata and MCG in anoxic, organic-rich sediments. Multivariate analyses identified sulphide and dissolved organic carbon as predictor variables of archaeal community composition. Quantification of MCG using a newly designed qPCR primer pair that improves coverage for MCG subgroups prevalent in the studied lakes revealed conspicuous populations in both the plankton and the sediment. Urmia Lake, with a surface area between 4000 to 6000 km2, is a hypersaline lake located in northwest Iran. It is the saltiest large lake in the world that supports life. Urmia Lake National Park is the home of an almost endemic crustacean species known as the brine shrimp, Artemia urmiana. Other forms of life include several species of algae, bacteria, microfungi, plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. As a consequence of this unique biodiversity, this lake has been selected as one of the 59 biosphere reserves by UNESCO. This paper provides a comprehensive species checklist that needs to be updated by additional research in the future.
Silver Lake (―Silbersee‖) is situated in the sandy Saalian moraine landscape east of Bremerhaven (Northern Germany), is about 8.0 m deep, and covers approximately 6.5 hectares. The lake is a nature reserve but, a part is nevertheless used for bathing and angling. In order to understand the water and sediment chemistry of the lake water samples were collected monthly from three different sites, while sediment samples were collected once from three other sites in the central deep area of the lake. During the summer, surface water is warmer than the bottom water, thus a thermocline with steep temperature changes is created. Water analysis indicated that P and N concentrations are too high to classify the lake as ―oligotrophic‖ as it was in former times. This is further supported by the oxygen depletion in the deep water body during summer. The pH of the lake water is weakly acidic (about 6.5). Historically, Mono Lake contained numerous types of wetland habitats to support the large numbers of migratory waterfowl that used the lake.Today the wetland habitats of the pre-diversion days have declined or changed because declining water levels have caused the degradation and loss of large areas of wetlands.It is estimated that before the diversions began, lagoons, fresh water marshes, and creek deltas accounted for approximately 900 acres of wetland habitat.This estimate does not include the speculative one mile long lagoon at Simmons Point. The saltiness of Great Salt Lake (GSL) is its defining characteristic, but many people do not realize that some areas of the lake are saltier than others. Prior to the construction of the rock-fill railroad causeway that now separates the north and south parts (arms) of GSL, the lake had, more or less, one salinity level. Since the causeway was completed in 1959, Gilbert and Gunnison Bays (the south and north arms of the lake, respectively) have had distinctly different salinity levels. A total of 12,378 lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) were tagged at North and Moonlight Bays (NMB) and Peshtigo Reef, Wisconsin, and commercial catches were sampled in 1975 through 1982 to determine vital statistics and fit predictive models for the NMB stock in Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Lake whitefish inhabiting the vicinities of Bark and Cedar Rivers, Chambers Island, Peshtigo Reef, Whitefish Bay and NMB in spring were major components of the NMB spawning stock in fall. Legal whitefish tagged in fall at NMB and sublegal fish tagged in spring at North Bay and Peshtigo Reef moved extensively in the study area. For sublegal whitefish, tag loss was 33% greater than for fish of legal size in the year after tagging. The estimated average annual exploitation rate was 27% in 1976- 1982; it varied with age ranging from 17 to 33% for ages 3 to 12. Llangorse Lake is the largest natural lake in South Wales, UK, and is of European conservation importance. The site has a long history of eutrophication problems and, in recent years, significant efforts have been made to meet water quality restoration targets at this site by reducing the input of phosphorus (P) from external sources. Although the lake has improved substantially in quality since the late 1970s, it is still not meeting its ecological targets. Phosphorus concentrations have remained high and there has been little reduction in algal biomass. Management decisions to reduce P input were originally based on the widely held assumption that shallow lakes are P limited in summer. A Sulphur man has been arrested in connection with a traffic crash in Lake Charles over the weekend that left one man dead. Police say the crash occurred at the intersection of Prien Lake Road and Ryan Street. A pick-up truck traveling east on Prien Lake Road hit a sedan that was southbound on Ryan Street, police say. The sedan was pushed into another vehicle, which then struck a fourth vehicle, according to LCPD. The driver of the sedan, John Carrier of Lake Charles, died from injuries sustained in the crash. During the course of the investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Kyle Joseph Natali, 29, of Sulphur, for one charge of Hit and Run.
