This paper aims to describe the development of laboratory animal science in China on the basis of historical evidence and recent national survey data, and to identify the problems facing the adoption of Three R alternatives. The authors undertook a national survey in 2006, by means of a questionnaire sent to 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, and also compared data from a variety of sources, including several national surveys and published papers. Laboratory animal science in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, as a result of a combination of economic, governmental and societal forces. More than 100,000 people work in the field of laboratory animal science, in 2,000 laboratory animal centres, institutes, universities, organisations, and companies. During the year of our survey, more than 19 million laboratory animals were produced from 320 licensed production facilities. Approximately 16 million laboratory animals were used in animal experiments, in 1530 ...
Laboratory animal science is a fascinating, relatively new field of applied science which deals with the biology of animal models used in biomedical research, and their relationships to man and other animal species in regard to health and disease prevention. It offers career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, in government regulatory agencies, and in research and development organizations. The B.S. in Laboratory Animal Science is the degree of choice for students who are interested in pre-vet, pre-med, and preparation for advanced studies in human and animal health-related areas. Graduates also emerge with leadership skills in the area of animal welfare. The degree is the only program of its kind in North Carolina. Student classroom and laboratory coursework involve excellent training and exposure to more than 14 species of animals, from guinea pigs to horses. As you progress in your studies, you will work more with laboratory, versus large animals. Numerous student resources abound ...

The socialization period that pets experience (or don\t experience) will affect them for the rest of their lives. Puppy and kitten socialization is critical; in fact, appropriate socialization at the correct age will decrease the number of pets relinquished to shelters or to new owners. Socialization courses can be fun and rewarding for pets, pet parents and team members. While puppies and kittens are cute, they also come with owners; often it is the owners who need more training than the patient! Veterinary team members play a significant role in this stage of client education, and creating a class of this nature for clients will build long-term relationships, ultimately resulting in increased client compliance, retention and referrals. Behavior: Implementing Puppy and Socialization Programs is a 3 week course that will help veterinary team members become familiar with science of socialization, while enabling them to create a program that will be a successful addition to the practice. This 60 minute online vet nurse CPD will, with the aid of a case study, discuss all aspects of anaesthesia for the acute abdomen including causes, patient preparation and stabilisation, monitoring, nursing support and recovery from anaesthesia. The acute abdomen is a common complaint in small animals and refers to sudden and severe abdominal pain. It can arise from many causes including gastric dilatation and volvulus, ruptured splenic mass or an intestinal foreign body, but general anaesthesia is almost always required to diagnose and treat the cause. Lest you think this is an anomaly, lets take a look at Thomas Clarkson. Is he an oddity in animal research? Yknow-the exception to the rule? Well…it doesnt look that way.. The American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), originally called the Professional Standards Committee of the Animal Care Panel (ACP), recognized that there was a problem in the publics perception of the treatment of laboratory animals. Their first meeting was held in 1950.. The Animal Facilities Certification Board (AFCB) was created to determine the professional standards for animal care and develop the certification program. Clarkson was a member of this board.. The NIH issued a contract to ACP to determine and establish professional standards for laboratory animal care and facilities. Clarkson was one of the six investigators.. Clarkson was a key player in the development of laboratory animal welfare standards. He is the same man whose name is on the presentation that treated laboratory animals ...

Zoonoses, diseases transmitted between animals and humans, have been a concern in laboratory animal medicine for decades. Exposure to zoonotic organisms not only poses health risks to personnel and research animals but may also affect research integrity. Early laboratory animal programs were ineffective at excluding and preventing transmission of zoonotic diseases: the health status of the animals were often unknown, endemic diseases occurred frequently, housing conditions were less controlled, and veterinary care programs were decentralized. Over time, these conditions improved, but despite this, zoonotic diseases remain a contemporary concern. To reduce the incidence of zoonoses, management should perform an accurate risk assessment that takes into account the type of research performed, animal species used, animal sources, and housing conditions. Specific research practices, such as the use of biological materials, can also affect the risk assessment and should be considered. Once identified, ...

Experimental research on vertebrates or any regulated invertebrates must comply with institutional, national, or international guidelines, and where available should have been approved by an appropriate ethics committee. The Basel Declaration outlines fundamental principles to adhere to when conducting research in animals and the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) has also published ethical guidelines.. A statement detailing compliance with relevant guidelines (e.g. the revised Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 in the UK and Directive 2010/63/EU in Europe) and/or ethical approval (including the name of the ethics committee and the reference number where appropriate) must be included in the manuscript. If a study has been granted an exemption from requiring ethics approval, this should also be detailed in the manuscript (including the name of the ethics committee that granted the exemption and the reasons for the exemption). The Editor will take account of animal ...

Building on the success of the 2007 International Symposium on the Science and Conservation of Horseshoe Crabs held at Dowling College, New York, USA, a second International Workshop on the Science and Conservation of Asian Horseshoe Crabs has been organized in Hong Kong. Asian horseshoe crabs represent an urgent conservation challenge. The status of horseshoe crabs in Asia is uncertain due to sparse data, but it is clear that there are multiple stressors that have caused declines in virtually all populations. Thus, there is an acute and urgent need for a conservation strategy focused on Asian species that will help guide scientific and conservation agendas into the future. Given this limited, but challenging objective, we have organized a workshop to develop a conservation strategy for Asian horseshoe crabs ...

This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Software and Compilers for Embedded Systems, SCOPES 2003, held in Vienna, Austria, September 24 26, 2003. Initially, the workshop was referred to as the International Workshop on Code Generation for Embedded Systems. The ?rst workshop took place in 1994 in Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany. From its beg- nings, the intention of the organizers was to create an atmosphere in which the researcherscould participateactively in dynamic discussionsand pro?t from the assembly of international experts in the ?eld. It was at the fourth workshop, in St. Goar, Germany, in 1999, that the spectrum of topics of interest for the workshop was extended, and not only code generation, but also software and compilers for embedded systems, were considered. The change in ?elds of interest led to a change of name, and this is when the present name was used for the ?rst time. Since then, SCOPES has been held again in St. Goar, Germany, in 2001; Berlin, Germany,
A 3-month-old male cat in the animal facility was presented for investigation of anorexia and occasional vomiting. We collected the specimens from gastroscopic biopsy and stool collection. The gastroscopic biopsy specimens were tested using a rapid urease test, CLO Helicobacter-detection kits. Stool specimens were gathered and evaluated using the commercially available SD Bioline H. pylori Ag kit according to the manufacturers instructions. Genomic DNAs from gastroscopic biopsy and stool specimens of the cat were extracted and submitted to the consensus PCR to amplify Helicobacter rpoB gene. Then the DNAs from gastroscopic biopsy and stool specimens were conducted a multiplex species-specific PCR to amplify urease B gene for H. heilmannii, H. pylori and H. felis. As the results, the rapid urease test with gastroscopic biopsy was revealed positive reaction. The result of H. pylori Stool Ag assay was one red line, negative for H. pylori. The gastroscopic biopsy and stool specimen were positive reactions

Subject recruitment and description. Plasma of patients receiving VSG was obtained from the Pediatric Obesity Tissue Repository, Center for Bariatric Research and Innovation, at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center. Twenty-two obese female patients with ages 17-20 were recruited. Plasma was collected before surgery and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after VSG.. Animals. C57BL/6J (Figures 1-4) and C3H/HeJ (Figure 5) mice were from the Jackson Laboratory. G-CSF (Csf3) knockout mice (129/SvJ) were donated by Jason M. Shohet from Baylor College of Medicine (50) and we cross-bred these mice with C57BL/6J mice. Proglucagon knockout (Gcg-/-) mice, Villin 1-cre mice, and GLP-2 receptor (Glp2r-/-) knockout mice were as previously reported (51, 52). Mice were housed in a 12-hour light/dark cycle in the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine at the University of Michigan, with free access to water. Mice were provided ad libitum access to NCD or HFD (60% calories from fat, D12492; Research Diets), as ...

0021] FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating, in accordance with an example embodiment, components of a mobile device. Here, the mobile device 200 includes a touchscreen 202 which is coupled to a user input interpretation module 204. The user input interpretation module 204 receives input from the touchscreen 202 and determines, in connection with a processor 206, what instructions to issue based on the user input. For example, if the user input received is a movement from a bottom of the touchscreen 202 to a top of the touehscreen 202, the user input interpretation module 204 may determine that a navigate up instruction should be generated. The user input interpretation module 204 may be a part of an operating system 208 loaded in memory 210 of the mobile device 200. If a virtual keyboard is currently displayed on the touchscreen 202, then the user input interpretation module 204 may be configured to convert as press input from the touchscreen 202 into a generated character based on a ...

A force sensing touchscreen, which detects touch point and touch force simultaneously by sensing a change in electric capacitance, was designed and fabricated. It was made with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) which have better mechanical and chemical characteristics than the indium-tin-oxide transparent electrodes used in most contemporary touchscreen devices. The SWCNTs, with a transmittance of about 85% and electric conductivity of 400 Ω per square; were coated and patterned on glass and polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) film substrates. The constructed force sensing touchscreen has a total size and thickness of 62 mm × 100 mm × 1.4 mm, and is composed of 11 driving line and 19 receiving line channels. The gap between the channels was designed to be 20 µm, taking visibility into consideration, and patterned by a photolithography and plasma etching processes. The mutual capacitance formed by the upper and lower transparent electrodes was initially about 2.8 pF and, on applying a 500 gf force
