AU - Zaman, Sarah. AU - Cameron, James D.. AU - Nasis, Arthur. PY - 2019/6/1. Y1 - 2019/6/1. N2 - Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common monogenic hereditary lipid disorder characterised by increased serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) concentrations and high risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of FH identified in a tertiary hospital laboratory was investigated by performing an opportunistic screen for index cases. Methods: The prevalence of likely FH based on LDL-cholesterol thresholds ,4.9 mmol/L as employed by the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network Criteria (DLCNC) score was evaluated retrospectively in a single tertiary hospital laboratory over a six-month period (July to December 2016). Background: Inadequate diagnostic processes and human resources in laboratories contribute to a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) in low- and middle-income countries. Direct smear microscopy is relied on for TB diagnosis; however, sensitivity rates vary. To improve sensitivity of direct microscopy, the researchers employed several approaches, including sputum digestion and concentration of acid-fast bacilli (AFB), a technique which uses commercial bleach. Objectives: This study compared methods used to diagnose active Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. Methods: Three sputum specimens were collected from each of 340 participants in Abuja, Nigeria, over two consecutive days. Direct microscopy was performed on all specimens; following microscopy, one specimen from each patient was selected randomly for bleach sedimentation and one for Lowenstein-Jensen culture. Results: Direct microscopy produced 28.8% AFB-positive results, whilst bleach sedimentation resulted in 30.3%. When compared with the cultures,
CHANGE ANS IS B Q-35: - Regarding the use of the D-dimer test in the evaluation of pulmonary embolism, which of the following is true? a. Semiquantitative latex assays are very sensitive but impractical because of long laboratory turnaround times. b. False negatives are more likely if the patient has had symptoms for more than a week. c. The SimpliRED assay is accurate enough to initiate treatment of pulmonary embolism with a positive test. d. The patient must have symptoms for at least 6 hours for the D-dimer test to be clinically useful. Ans 35: (b) False negatives are more likely if the patient has had symptoms for more than a week. Reference - Read the text below Sol: · D-dimers are fibrin split products released into the circulation by plasmin during fibrinolyisis. · This typically occurs within 1 hour of thrombus formation. The continued fibrinolysis initiated after a thrombus formation will continue to elevate D-dimer levels for a week. A false-negative result is more likely after this ...
This Facebook meme published on 27 June 2020 claims that a San Francisco hospital lab intentionally falsified COVID-19 tests to inflate the number of positive results. A British actor, Robert Tayman, tweeted on 29 June a version of this claim and afterwards asserted in the Twitter thread that the nurses worked in a major hospital in Baltimore. Both tweets were deleted two days later, but screenshots of the tweets continue to circulate. The claim has been shared in different forms thousands of times and viewed by more than a million people through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, testing has emerged as a key strategy to slow the spread of the virus, together with other measures including frequent hand-washing, use of masks, and physical distancing1. With several countries beginning to reopen, the identification and isolation of infected individuals and their close contacts can help to prevent transmission and reduce the impact of COVID-19 on ...

This book is intended for post‐registration and post‐graduate level scientists who are developing careers in diagnostic clinical microbiology. It is suitable for those who are working in hospital laboratories while studying for advanced qualifications, as well as full‐time MSc students. The aim is to prompt readers to make connections between the clinical symptoms, pathogenesis of infections and the approaches used in laboratory diagnosis. This is not a comprehensive account of all aspects of clinical microbiology, but a consideration of a range of infections caused by selected pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths. The idea is to use these examples to illustrate clinical and diagnostic issues, to stimulate critical appraisal of published evidence and to encourage problem‐solving in the clinical laboratory context.. There is an introductory chapter, which outlines the scope of clinical diagnostic microbiology and the key areas for the laboratory scientist to be ...

The Army was after me, but since I had not yet been called up, I decided to do a bit of traveling first and set out hitch hiking around the USA, registering for the draft in each city I came to. Computers being primitive and unconnected, I was safe from Uncle Sam as long as I traveled because the Government could never come to grips with a moving target. When my number was finally up (literally) I successfully beat the draft by enlisting in the Navy. Actually, I had an ulterior motive for joining up (beyond the pressure of the draft board). Diana somehow knew that we were destined to spend our lives together, and I thought that by joining the Navy, I could avoid marriage. It didnt work! In less than a year she had me! Ive never regretted it.. The Navy was a turning point in my life. I was married and had one child (Jeremy, born in 1971) and the Navy let me keep my beard. I was a Navy corpsman (a medic) and had received additional schooling in blood bank and hospital laboratory technology. I ...

Over the course of the next ten months, viewers were constantly insulted with plot twists that were so unbelievable that many viewers became offended by the writers audacity: switched DNA results in hospital laboratories, countless almost-confessions of the truth. Sure, there were viewers who were livid that Biancas baby had been taken from her, but there will always be stories that irk viewers. Lets be honest, getting viewers roused about something is a great way to get word-of-mouth going. For most of 2004, AMC fans around the globe were asking, When will Bianca get her baby back?! It seemed like the same dialogue was being repeated over and over: everyone in the know wanted Bianca to get her baby back, but no one had the cajones to actually spit out the truth. The repeated near-confessions and dialogue bogged down the flow of the storytelling. Perhaps if the baby-swapping storyline had gone back burner for a bit it wouldnt have resulted in so many irate viewers because it wouldnt have ...

Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria isolated from central nervous system specimens as reported by U.S. hospital laboratories from 2000 to 2002 : Bacterial infections of the central nervous system, especially acute infections such as bacterial meningitis require immediate, invariably empiric antibiotic therapy. The widespread emergence of resistance among bacterial species is a cause for concern. Current antibacterial susceptibility data among central nervous system (CNS) pathogens is important to define current prevalence of resistance.

The PCBA is approximately 8x2x2 in size and weighs approximately 2 lbs. Test cartridges are approximately 1x1x1/4. On a daily basis, prior to use, the PCBA undergoes two internal quality control tests. The first test uses a metal, electronic cartridge simulator to electronically perform like a sample-filled cartridge when inserted in the PCBA. This reusable cartridge tests two known control solutions to verify the device can analyze specimens to pre-determined range extremes (both high and low). While the PCBA performs internal electronic checks and calibration during each testing cycle, the electronic cartridge simulator provides an independent check on the ability of the unit to take accurate measurements of voltage, current and resistance from the cartridge. A PCBA will pass or fail this electronic test depending on whether or not it measures these signals within limits specified in the analyzer software. Results of these tests are compared to PCBA range-control cards to verify that the ...
