The QUASIMEME Project (1993-1996) was established to assist European laboratories to improve the data they produce in marine monitoring programmes. Through laboratory performance Studies (with six-monthly reports), workshops and expert visits the programme was fully interactive. There were five rounds of laboratory performance studies. For the nutrient section, in which about 50 laboratories took part, the reference materials distributed to the participants consisted of standard solutions of nutrients and seawater samples stabilized by autoclaving. The material included low and high concentrations typical of those encountered in coastal seawater; at least two samples with different concentrations were distributed in each round. Robust statistics were used to determine the means and standard deviations for each set of results. For inorganic nutrients, the assessment of the data for bias and precision was based mainly on a Z- and P-scoring system in which targets of +/- 6% were allocated to the ...

May 6, 2009. Hygienic Laboratory among first to confirm H1N1 outside of CDC. The University Hygienic Laboratory on Wednesday successfully completed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verification process to conduct confirmatory testing for influenza A H1N1 (swine-like flu). The Hygienic Laboratory is one of the first state public health laboratories to conduct confirmatory testing for this new strain of the H1N1 virus.. The Hygienic Laboratory staff worked swiftly throughout this outbreak to process all H1N1 tests, while at the same time completing the verification process required to conduct confirmatory testing in Iowa rather than sending specimens to CDC, said Hygienic Laboratory Director Christopher Atchison. Initially testing for the new strain of H1N1 was conducted at the Hygienic Laboratory and then sent on to CDC for confirmation. The CDC performed all confirmatory testing for all state public health laboratories until it provided kits that allowed these laboratories ...

We report results from a worldwide interlaboratory comparison of samples among laboratories that measure (or measured) stable carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios of atmospheric CH4 (δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4). The offsets among the laboratories are larger than the measurement reproducibility of individual laboratories. To disentangle plausible measurement offsets, we evaluated and critically assessed a large number of intercomparison results, some of which have been documented previously in the literature. The results indicate significant offsets of δ13C-CH4 and δD- CH4 measurements among data sets reported from different laboratories; the differences among laboratories at modern atmospheric CH4 level spread over ranges of 0.5 ‰ for δ13C-CH4 and 13 ‰ for δD-CH4. The intercomparison results summarized in this study may be of help in future at tempts to harmonize δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 data sets from different laboratories in order to jointly incorporate them into modelling studies. However,

Brookhaven National Laboratory researchers are working to develop ways to synchronize the magnetic spins in nanoscale devices to build tiny signal-generating or receiving antennas and other electronics.. Upton, New York - Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energys Brookhaven National Laboratory are seeking ways to synchronize the magnetic spins in nanoscale devices to build tiny yet more powerful signal-generating or receiving antennas and other electronics. Their latest work, published in Nature Communications, shows that stacked nanoscale magnetic vortices separated by an extremely thin layer of copper can be driven to operate in unison, potentially producing a powerful signal that could be put to work in a new generation of cell phones, computers, and other applications.. The aim of this "spintronic" technology revolution is to harness the power of an electrons "spin," the property responsible for magnetism, rather than its negative charge.. To accept a management position in a biomedical laboratory (research, diagnostic, biotech/pharmaceutical, public health) requires advanced scientific knowledge as well as basic business skills. Too often, such roles in medical and scientific laboratories are assigned based on the technical expertise of the staff member. While this is critical, it is not adequate to allow a smooth and confident transition to leadership. The ability to analyze financial, scientific and human resources is critical for individuals who will be successful leaders. It is with these goals that the curriculum was designed, and will be refined as we learn from our students and employers. Graduates are prepared to accept positions of management within labs, as well as the larger institutions in which they function (hospitals, government agencies, private industries, etc).. For licensed clinical technologists: Please note that completing the BLM does not provide a license or other formal credential to become a clinical ...
The goal of this laboratory course is to introduce vertebrate developmental biology to undergraduate students, emphasizing both classical and contemporary aspects of this field. During the course, the students combine the use of living Xenopus laevis material with active tutorial participation, with the aim of illustrating how the fertilized egg can generate the diversity of cell types and complexity of pattern seen only a few days later in the embryo. Special emphasis is given to the observation and manipulation of living material. The laboratory course includes a comprehensive analysis of both oogenesis and early development and is divided into two overlapping parts that combine tutorial and practical approaches. The first part is devoted to oogenesis; oocytes are sorted out, allowed to mature in vitro and observed in histological section. In the second part, students perform an in vitro fertilization of Xenopus eggs and a mesoderm and neural induction assay of animal cap explants. Successful

and C. difficile, can require different interventions than those infections that are community-associated, such as tuberculosis and pneumococcal pneumonia. In all cases, surveillance data are used to monitor the effectiveness of prevention efforts.. CDC works with state and local public health authorities to detect and respond to the emergence of new resistant bacteria. Part of these efforts includes providing reference laboratory services for state and local public health departments to confirm and characterize unusual antibiotic resistance. New resistance patterns often require the development of new laboratory tools for detection. CDC develops these new laboratory tools and then distributes them widely to monitor resistance at the local level.. CDC also provides epidemiologic assistance in outbreak responses. Outbreaks caused by resistant bacteria can occur in community settings where people are concentrated, such as athletic teams, childcare centers, and prisons, or in healthcare settings, ...
Q. Two of the checklist standards for cytopathology include references to a required time interval for reviewing information: 1) CYP.02500-"Is there documentation of at least annual review of all policies and procedures in the cytopathology la-boratory section by the current laboratory director or desig-nee?" and 2) CYP.08500-"Is there a documented workload policy with evidence of data re-cording?" The latter includes the note: "The laboratory director must establish the maximum workload (based on capability/documented performance evaluation) for each individual examining slides and the limit must be reassessed at least every six months." We currently use an automated document-management system in our laboratory that begins sending reminders for procedure review three months before the last annual review date. These remind-ers serve to ensure that annual review takes place in a timely manner, but it also has the effect of constantly moving the calendar date back if that review occurs before the ...
Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as Input or Output based. Input based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different currencies such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning. Output based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning. The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently. As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group ...

The SOPs are generally classified in the following four categories: Administration SOPS: control the exchange of data inter-office, access to patient records and files and electronic data and the handling and access to privileged and sensitive information. Operation SOPs: control all laboratory operations that specifically concern individual sample data, laboratory management and cleanliness, as well as all QM/QC procedures. They also cover employee safety and all processes that maintain an aseptic processing environment. Biologic SOPS: control all biologic preparation, manufacturing and testing processes required to be performed in a sterile environment by a trained technician. These SOPs and their associated data collection forms are standardized to capture all data and record any deviations in process. The biologic SOPs govern all in laboratory process including the creation of re-manufactured enzymes, cell culture methods and all in process testing. Equipment SOPs: control handle details ...

Microbiology courses often include a laboratory activity on the identification of unknown microbes. This activity consists of providing students with microbial cultures and running biochemical assays to identify the organisms. This approach lacks molecular techniques such as sequencing of genes encoding 16S rRNA, which is currently the method of choice for identification of unknown bacteria. A laboratory activity was developed to teach students how to identify microorganisms using 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and validate microbial identities using biochemical techniques. We hypothesized that designing an experimental protocol to confirm the identity of a bacterium would improve students knowledge of microbial identification techniques and the physiological characteristics of bacterial species. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria were isolated from the root nodules of Medicago truncatula and prepared for 16S rRNA PCR analysis. Once DNA sequencing revealed the identity of the organisms, the students
Students are required to attend intensive classes every day of the two week block, held in the period between session 1 and session 2, as published on the nursing calendar, at Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour. Students who are not able to attend this intensive block should not enrol in the unit. This unit contains laboratory activities and/or professional experience learning that require students to fulfil certain vaccination and compliance requirements prior to attending. As some of these can take up to 5 months to complete, you must prepare now. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in you being unable to undertake the stipulated Laboratory Activity and/or Professional Experience Learning which may result in failure of the unit. Handwashing is a much discussed topic in early elementary school, but seems to be taken for granted by the time high school rolls around. This easy experiment can show students in graphic display what grows in agar when hands are not washed. There are two activities presented, one for pairs of students, and one for the whole class. In addition, there are options for widening the research and important questions to be answered by evaluating the data. Remind students how important handwashing is in preventing the transmission of microorganisms that could cause disease.courtesy of Knovation

Hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and neutralization are used to evaluate vaccines against influenza virus A (H5N1); however, poor standardization leads to interlaboratory variation of results. A candidate antibody standard (07/150) was prepared from pooled plasma of persons given clade 1 A/Vietnam/1194/2004 vaccine. To test human and sheep antiserum, 15 laboratories used HI and neutralization and reassortant A/Vietnam/1194/2004, A/turkey/Turkey/1/2005 (clade 2.2), and A/Anhui/1/2005 (clade 2.3.4) viruses. Interlaboratory variation was observed for both assays, but when titers were expressed relative to 07/150, overall percentage geometric coefficient of variation for A/Vietnam/1194/2004 was reduced from 125% to 61% for HI and from 183% to 81% for neutralization. Lack of reduced variability to clade 2 antigens suggested the need for clade-specific standards. Sheep antiserum as a standard did not reliably reduce variability. The World Health Organization has established 07/150 as an international standard
