Laboratory activities and constructivism are two notions that have been playing significant roles in science education. Despite common beliefs about the importance of laboratory activities, reviews reported inconsistent results about the effectiveness of laboratory activities. Since laboratory activities can be expensive and take more time, there is an effort to introduce virtual laboratory activities. This study aims at exploring the learning environment created by a virtual laboratory and a real laboratory. A quasi experimental study was conducted at two grade ten classes at a state high school in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected using a questionnaire called Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES) before and after the laboratory activities. The results show that both types of laboratories can create constructivist learning environments. Each type of laboratory activity, however, may be stronger in improving certain aspects compared to the other. While a virtual laboratory is ...

The QUASIMEME Project (1993-1996) was established to assist European laboratories to improve the data they produce in marine monitoring programmes. Through laboratory performance Studies (with six-monthly reports), workshops and expert visits the programme was fully interactive. There were five rounds of laboratory performance studies. For the nutrient section, in which about 50 laboratories took part, the reference materials distributed to the participants consisted of standard solutions of nutrients and seawater samples stabilized by autoclaving. The material included low and high concentrations typical of those encountered in coastal seawater; at least two samples with different concentrations were distributed in each round. Robust statistics were used to determine the means and standard deviations for each set of results. For inorganic nutrients, the assessment of the data for bias and precision was based mainly on a Z- and P-scoring system in which targets of +/- 6% were allocated to the ...

May 6, 2009. Hygienic Laboratory among first to confirm H1N1 outside of CDC. The University Hygienic Laboratory on Wednesday successfully completed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verification process to conduct confirmatory testing for influenza A H1N1 (swine-like flu). The Hygienic Laboratory is one of the first state public health laboratories to conduct confirmatory testing for this new strain of the H1N1 virus.. The Hygienic Laboratory staff worked swiftly throughout this outbreak to process all H1N1 tests, while at the same time completing the verification process required to conduct confirmatory testing in Iowa rather than sending specimens to CDC, said Hygienic Laboratory Director Christopher Atchison. Initially testing for the new strain of H1N1 was conducted at the Hygienic Laboratory and then sent on to CDC for confirmation. The CDC performed all confirmatory testing for all state public health laboratories until it provided kits that allowed these laboratories ...

tDNA-PCR and capillary electrophoresis of the amplified DNA fragments already have been evaluated for the differentiation ofListeria species (14) and enterococci (1). To enable identification of a large number of strains, a software program which was described previously (1) has been developed at our laboratory. In the present study, the interlaboratory reproducibility of tDNA-PCR was evaluated in order to develop a fully exchangeable digital fingerprint database which can be consecutively extended with new fingerprints of species belonging to a wide array of genera.. For S. agalactiae strains, tDNA-PCR resulted in a fingerprint with six reproducibly present peaks. The standard deviation of the amplified tDNA spacer fragment lengths (peak values) was calculated for each of the six peaks obtained in 122 fingerprints of strain LMG14694T. The standard deviation of all samples ranged from 0.19 to 0.38 bp for peaks between 54 and 253 bp, which indicates that reproducibility with regard to peak values ...

We report results from a worldwide interlaboratory comparison of samples among laboratories that measure (or measured) stable carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios of atmospheric CH4 (δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4). The offsets among the laboratories are larger than the measurement reproducibility of individual laboratories. To disentangle plausible measurement offsets, we evaluated and critically assessed a large number of intercomparison results, some of which have been documented previously in the literature. The results indicate significant offsets of δ13C-CH4 and δD- CH4 measurements among data sets reported from different laboratories; the differences among laboratories at modern atmospheric CH4 level spread over ranges of 0.5 ‰ for δ13C-CH4 and 13 ‰ for δD-CH4. The intercomparison results summarized in this study may be of help in future at tempts to harmonize δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 data sets from different laboratories in order to jointly incorporate them into modelling studies. However,

All clinical laboratories using assays for HER2 as predictive or prognostic tests must participate in an appropriate external quality assurance (EQA) programme, such as that run by the United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment Scheme for Immunocytochemistry (UK NEQAS-ICC).. On a quarterly basis, UK NEQAS-ICC circulates unstained sections from a formalin fixed and paraffin wax processed block comprising human breast carcinoma cell lines (MDA-MB-453, BT-20, and MCF-7) and an ovarian carcinoma cell line (SKOV-3) to over 100 laboratories. Previous FISH analysis on these cell lines has shown the SKOV-3 and MDA-MB-453 cell lines to have HER2 gene amplification, whereas the BT-20 and MCF-7 cell lines do not.13 When the sensitivity of the assay is appropriate, the cell line SKOV-3 should be unequivocally positive (3+) and the cell lines MCF-7 and BT-20 should be unequivocally negative (0 or 1+). The most appropriate result on the cell line MDA-MB-453 is 2+. Following strict adherence to the ...

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist convicted of offering to help develop nuclear weapons for Venezuela cannot appeal his five-year sentence because he gave up that right, a federal court said.. In an opinion issued Monday, the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals said Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni had no grounds to fighting his sentencing because his plea deal called for no appeals.. Mascheroni, 79, argued in court papers that he had ineffective attorneys and he didnt fully understand his plea agreement. He wanted his sentencing tossed out.. But the court said Mascheroni was well aware of the agreement and a U.S. district judge made sure he understood all that was presented.. Dr. Mascheroni, who has a Ph.D. and is a former scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory nuclear weapons division, signed the plea agreement, which stated that he freely and voluntarily entered his plea and that he had reviewed it with counsel, the federal appeals court wrote.. In January, ...

I have no information about this film badge other than the fact that it obviously came from Argonne National Laboratory. I am guessing it is of very early vintage, ca. 1950, because of the relatively primitive filtration system. Approximately two thirds of the film packet was covered with a cadmium filter. With the exception of a square window for betas and low energy photons, the rest of the badge was made of tin. In the early to mid 1950s, other national laboratories began using plastic badges with multiple filters (e.g., copper, cadmium and lead) to evaluate the effective energy of the gamma rays and x-rays. ...

Authorizing states to allow high-complexity clinical laboratories to offer COVID-19 tests without first obtaining an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). On March 12, 2020, FDA announced that it would allow New York State to authorize certain laboratories in that state to offer validated COVID-19 testing without obtaining an EUA from FDA, provided such laboratories met certain requirements established by the state. The FDAs March 16, 2020 announcement extends similar authority to the remaining 49 states, provided such states affirmatively choose to take responsibility for tests developed and used by laboratories in their states. The process will be established individually by each state and will not necessarily need to mirror New York States process. States may allow clinical laboratories that meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) requirements to perform high-complexity testing in those states (1) to engage directly with appropriate state authorities instead of with the ...

A number of studies have examined vitamin D status in large populations. For example, comprehensive analyses of NHANES data have previously been conducted [14, 15, 19]. A few of the findings of NHANES differ, however, from observations described here for the WCMC, UIHC, and ARUP clinical datasets. For example, the NHANES studies indicated that 25(OH)D concentrations are, in general, higher in males than females [15, 19]. A second observation of the published NHANES data is that children tended to have higher 25(OH)D concentrations than adults [15]. While we observed a general pattern of more optimal 25(OH)D status in childhood in all datasets analyzed, an improvement in 25(OH)D status later in adulthood was observed at WCMC, UIHC, and ARUP, demonstrating that 25(OH)D status changes throughout life. For the WCMC dataset, we were able to demonstrate this pattern using both immunoassay and LC-MS/MS 25(OH)D results.. It is likely that consumption of vitamin D fortified foods, as well as UV exposure ...
