Historically, organized labor in Bolivia had been one of the most politically active and powerful in Latin America. Owing to the importance of mining in the economy, the Trade Union Federation of Bolivian Mineworkers (Federac on Sindical de Trabajadores Mineros de Bolivia -- FSTMB) has been the backbone of organized labor since the mid-1940s. Before the 1952 Revolution, the FSTMB orchestrated opposition to the three dominant tin barons and led protests against worker massacres. During the first few days of the revolution, the MNR founded the COB in order to group the FSTMB and the other labor unions under an umbrella organization that would be subordinate to the party. In creating the COB, the MNR was following the example of Mexicos PRI, which effectvely controlled labor through the partys structures. In Bolivia the COB and especially the FSTMB, which controlled labor in the nationalized mining sector, pushed for worker comanagement and cogovernment. Moreover, worker militias were allowed to ...
Most adult Americans, in fact, do not receive government assistance to pay for behavioral healthcare. They receive health insurance from an employer, labor union, or professional association, or purchase it themselves. Roughly 50 million adult Americans working in the private sector receive employer-provided healthcare for themselves and/or their families. In comparison, 11 million adult Americans are covered by Medicaid, 6 million under age 65 by Medicare, and slightly fewer than 5 million by TRICARE, the Department of Defenses healthcare system. If all private-sector employers purchasing healthcare coverage spoke with a single voice, the numbers alone suggest that they would have more leverage than the federal government over mental healthcare coverage and practices. Of course, this principle is weakened somewhat by the fact that some private-sector insurance plans exclude behavioral healthcare treatment. However, even when employer-provided healthcare lacks explicit behavioral health ...
This study of 438 women aged 18-65 in the Detroit metropolitan area in 1974 provides information on their participation in the labor force. Data are provided on the job histories of respondents, up to 14 previous occupations in order to assess the nature of work, length of stay on the job, and the status of public or private employment. Respondents were asked questions about the various jobs they had held, such as their feelings toward their jobs, their reasons for working, job titles held, membership in labor unions, health conditions that might have affected their work, reasons for leaving their jobs, and the geographic location of their workplace, as well as their feelings of job security and job satisfaction. Other questions probed respondents feelings about equal job opportunities for men and women, equal privileges for women and men, the removal of the glass ceiling for women in Americas corporate and political life, the implications for the marriage if a wife earned more than her ...
Why does the number of organizations of any given kind vary over time? Utilizing a diverse group of organizations including national labor unions, newspapers and newspaper publishers, brewing firms, life insurance companies, and banks, this book seeks to deepen and broaden the understanding of change in organizational populations by examining the dynamics of numbers of organizations in populations.
M1977.L3 S66 1973. Local 8 was an interracial, multi-ethnic local that was part of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a militant, left-wing labor union. From its inception, the IWW has been committed to racial equality, though African Americans played a relatively small role in the organization. By contrast, Local 8, a branch of Philadelphia longshoremen, possessed the IWWs largest contingent of African Americans as well as its most significant black leader, Ben Fletcher.. Also called the Wobblies, the IWW believed in equal treatment for African Americans. Article I, Section I of the IWW Constitution declared that all workers, regardless of color or creed, could join the IWW. The IWW believed that all wage workers, regardless of their ethnic, national, or racial heritage, should identify as workers in opposition to their employers, with whom workers shared nothing in common.. Local 8 proved the IWWs ideology could work in practice. In 1913 several thousand longshoremen, who loaded ...

The Supreme Court on Monday decided against imposing a new requirement on employer pension plans. In a unanimous decision the justices said companies do not have a duty to consider an invitation to merge their pension plans as an alternative to terminating them. The ruling came in the case of Crown Vantage Inc. a bankrupt paper company that received a merger proposal from a labor union pension fund to cover Crowns 17 pension plans.
The workforce, the way I see it, is entitled to negotiate for a just wage and have its own choice of labour union. So why cant the management and the unions work out a just deal? I was shocked to read recently in the Sunday Times the challenge thrown at Sri Lanka by Mike Thompson, Chairman UCL, where he says that Unilever would pull out of Sri Lanka its manufacturing facilities, if the labour situation is not in accordance with management requirements. As a Sri Lankan I am deeply with its people, and I would say that if Unilever accedes to Thompsons proposition, U.K. business would lose a gold mine out of several the British have on our soil. It is no joke! Lever Brothers of Sunlight fame set up a soap manufacturing plant prior to Independence because Sri Lanka had nearly 100 percent of the ingredients, including labour for such a venture. While third world countries produced coconut and palm oil, their populations were told by soap manufacturing conglomerates, not to consume the same for ...
If present trends continue, there will be a concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands as workers are systematically replaced by automation, robotization and cheap Third World labor. As there is more and more widespread unemployment, workers will lose any power they once had as labor unions become impotent in the face of the fact that physical and mental labor has become expendable to a greater and greater extent. Eventually a political oligarchy and economic plutocracy comprised of the same people will replace the society that was once grounded in a large middle class. The fact that farmers are being driven off their land, that the family farm is becoming extinct, is another manifestation of the expendability of broadly based human labor power. Instead of a society composed of a large number of small farmers and independent small businessmen, a yeomenry, people are being stripped of their land, stripped of their independence in large numbers and forced to rely on the society as a whole ...
During the New Deal, attempts were made to stop cutthroat competition. The National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) was a short-lived program in 1933-35 designed to strengthen trade associations, and raise prices, profits and wages at the same time. The Robinson-Patman Act of 1936 sought to protect local retailers against the onslaught of the more efficient chain stores, by making it illegal to discount prices. To control big business, the New Deal policymakers preferred federal and state regulation -controlling the rates and telephone services provided by AT&T, for example- and by building up countervailing power in the form of labor unions.[citation needed] The antitrust environment of the 70s was dominated by the case United States v. IBM, which was filed by the U.S. Justice Department in 1969. IBM at the time dominated the computer market through alleged bundling of software and hardware as well as sabotage at the sales level and false product announcements. It was one of the largest and ...

United Airlines said Wednesday it would be forced to file for bankruptcy protection this fall unless its labor unions agreed to significant concessions within the next 30 days. Just three days after US Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a day after American Airlines announced deep cutbacks, Uniteds warning underscored how the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks continued to roil the industry. The warning was a stark message to Uniteds unions to cooperate in belt- tightening but also a signal to the government of the airlines urgent efforts to land $1.8 billion in federal loan guarantees, experts said. A bankruptcy filing by United, the nations second largest carrier and the dominant presence at San Francisco International Airport, would have minimal or no impact on passengers, tickets or frequent flier miles, industry watchers said. Bankruptcy would be a nonevent from the standpoint of their customers, said Alan Gover, a Houston attorney who represented creditors during

Protesters in Argentina clashed with police during marches over government austerity measures on Thursday as labor unions challenged President Mauricio Macri in the first general strike since he took office 16 months ago. Just over a quarter century ago, when I was a young scribbler traipsing around the metro desk of the Baltimore Sun, I had an early opportunity to learn a lesson about money, about ethics, about capitalism and, in particular, about the American entertainment industry. And Dorothy Simon, she raised no fools. I only needed to learn it once.. I learned about something called packaging.. And now, finally, my apostasy from newspapering having delivered me from Baltimore realities to film-set make-believe, I am suprised and delighted that many of the fellow scribblers with whom I share a labor union have at last acquired the same hard, ugly lesson:. Packaging is a lie. It is theft. It is fraud. In the hands of the right U.S. Attorney, it might even be prima facie evidence of decades of racketeering. Its that fucking ugly.. For those of you not in the film and television world, there is no shame in tuning out right now because at its core, the argument over packaging now ongoing between film and ...
Cyrus S. Ching (May 21, 1876 - December 27, 1967) was a Canadian-American who became an American industrialist, federal civil servant, and noted labor union mediator. He was the first director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) and the Wage Stabilization Board. Ching was born on his fathers farm in Prince Edward Island, Canada on May 21, 1876. The Chings were of Welsh heritage (the family name was originally spelled Chynge). He was the only boy in a family with eight children. Ching was educated in a one-room schoolhouse. When he was 16, he was a spectator in a local courtroom, and the experience inspired him to become a lawyer. He attended Prince of Wales College, a college preparatory academy, after a well-off uncle paid for his high school education. He transferred to a local business college and studied bookkeeping and stenography. In 1895, he left Prince Edward Island to work for an Albertan grain elevator company. Dear Nica Times:. Dany Ortegas lecturing the United States on the causes of violence and the spiritual destruction of savage capitalism (NT, May 18) is something akin to Vlad the Impaler complaining that his neighbor mistreats his poodle.. Mr. Ortega surely is the one to consult about violence. His wild enthusiasm for it and his experience in inflicting it on his countrymen certainly qualifies him as an expert.. His efforts at correcting the errors of savage capitalism in Nicaragua in the 1980s included neighborhood snitch committees (Comités de Defensa Sandinista), and ruthless control of the press, labor unions and the private economy, which he managed to wreck in short order.. In the years Mr. Ortega ran Nicaragua, thousands of political opponents were killed or imprisoned as were thousands of native Indians.. Like his much-admired heroes, Mao and Stalin, Dany used government-created famine as a weapon.. This adds impressive weight to Mr. Ortegas credentials as an expert on the causes ...

Sri Lanka had previously announced a phasing out of asbestos starting 1 January 2018, with a full ban planned by 2024.. Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), said: Imposing chrysotile asbestos on an unwilling nation is not fair trade, it is culpable homicide. Unions worldwide abhor this cynical economic blackmail. Russia must not and will not be allowed to blow a hole in fair trade rules. This desperate bid to try to force continued markets for Russias deadly asbestos trade must be condemned and resisted, said Fiona Murie, BWI Global Director, Construction and Health and Safety. We are concerned for workers and the community in Sri Lanka who are being exposed to this cancer-causing material and urge the Sri Lankan Government to push ahead with its decision to ban chrysotile asbestos as soon as possible she said. 8 October 2003 The Congress of South African Trade Unions is giving its full support to two important protests being organised by its fellow trade unionists in Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is organising a day of mass action, including work stoppages, today, 8 October, in protest again the ever increasing cost of living, the high level of taxation, the cash crisis and the stifling of trade union activ ities by the government. COSATU has already expressed its concern at the attacks on of basic trade union rights by the Zimbabwe government and the growth of mass poverty amongst the majority of the population. The situation is getting worse and we wish the ZCTU every success i n their just and legitimate day of protest. We call on the government not to try to use the state forces to disrupt the protests or to attack the workers taking part. COSATU also reiterates its view that there needs to be social dialogue between government and opposition parties, and the whole of ...
Under the Tories proposed new law, strike ballots would need a 50% turnout for industrial action to be legal. But in the case of essential public services - health, education, transport and fire services - 40% of those voting have to have voted in favour. In other words, 80% which is the combination of the general turnout proposal and the new 40% yes vote must have voted in favour. That would make almost all strikes illegal, particularly in large and dispersed workforces where postal ballots rarely achieve this. This is a blatant attack on the rightful role of trade unions in being able to protect their members against exploitation at work - several recent polls have consistently found that more than 70% of the public believe unions are essential to protect workers interests.. There are several other arguments against this vindictive piece of legislation. The proposed rules dont apply in any other elections. If only ballots with a turnout of more than 50% are to be taken as valid, then ...

The struggle to ensure the retirements of millions of hardworking Americans continues. But the reintroduction of essential legislation by a long-time pension protector could go a long way toward bolstering nest eggs jeopardized under the current system.. Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, the new chairman of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee, unveiled legislation this week that would improve the security of multiemployer pensions covering 1.5 million Americans that currently are facing insolvency. And given the lawmakers new prominent position, the bill has an excellent chance of advancing through the House.. The bipartisan bill, which has five Democratic and five Republican co-sponsors, is badly needed. As it stands, there are more than 300 multiemployer plans across the country - including the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund - that are in danger of failing. The Teamsters have been fighting for years for a legislative solution and are anxious again to work with members of both ...

Irresponsible trade union action cost the lives of six innocent patients after health services were crippled last week at the Ratnapura General Hospital. The drama began on May 2 after a nurse attached to the hospital allegedly had a verbal confrontation with a doctor. The trivial incident developed into a major tragedy which ultimately cost the lives of these innocent patients. The latest and the most unfortunate victims were three infants who died due to lack of proper medical care on Friday. Who are those responsible for the six deaths? Isn t this a heinous crime? In the first instance, why does the Health Ministry allow trade unions to play havoc and cause untimely deaths? We must find immediate answers to these questions and take remedial action to ensure that this type of unfortunate incidents do not recur in the future. The doctor, who was apparently verbally abused by a nurse, took up the matter with his trade union. We do not know the banter which took place but it reached a level which ...

The combined effects of turbocharging, high fuel injection pressure, and reduced oil consumption on diesel exhaust emissions were investigated using a single-cylinder research engine. The influence of these exhaust emission control concepts on particulate composition was determined using a new particulate analysis method. In addition, the dependence of particulate composition on engine load and air utilization was examined using the microfumigation technique. Simultaneous application of these emissions control concepts reduced exhaust particulates by 70 percent. High injection pressure reduced the insoluble component of particulates, while reducing oil consumption and turbocharging the engine lowered both soluble and insoluble particulates. Reductions in oil-derived particulates with increasing engine load were partially attributed to increases in volumetric air utilization. Ninety percent of the lube oil found in exhaust particulates was unburned; however, similar concentrations of unburned and ...

WASHINGTON - February 11, 2008 - National Education Association President Reg Weaver discussed the role of labor unions in the development of the civil rights movement in a speech today before government workers. Weaver delivered the keynote speech to approximately 350 attendees at the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Womens and Fair Practices Departments 2008 Civil Rights Luncheon. The labor movement has fought for fair wages, fair treatment in the workplace, and a fair chance to get ahead, said Weaver. The labor movement has been a force for fairness in every aspect of American life - including the civil rights movement.. In his speech, Weaver recalled the efforts of Black civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph to organize sleeping car porters on passenger trains. Randolph recognized that the labor movement represented the great masses of workers, and therefore has the moral responsibility for its commitment to the principle of civil rights. Randolph went on to ...
Introduction: Radar workers are exposed to pulsed high frequency electromagnetic fields. In this study, health effects of these radiations in personnel who routinely work with radar systems are investigated. Materials and Methods: The 28-item General Health Questionnaire was used as a self-administered tool for assessment of general mental health and mental distress. One hundred workers occupationally exposed to radar radiations (14-18 GHz) participated in the study. Visual reaction time was recorded with a simple blind computer-assisted-visual reaction time test. To assess the short-term memory, Wechsler Memory Scale-III test was performed. Results: Twenty to 39% of the radar workers reported different problems such as needing a good tonic, feeling run down and out of sorts, headache, tightness or pressure in the head, insomnia, getting edgy and bad-tempered. Furthermore, 47% of the radar workers reported feeling under strain. In response to this question that if they have been able to enjoy ...
The Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren, a liberal Republican, issued Brown vs. Board of education in 1954, declaring legal segregation to be unconstitutional. It marked the culmination of a judicial movement that had been underway for a decade. It had the short-term effect of ending segregated schools in border states, and the long-term effect of ending legalized segregation in schools. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy to a lesser degree, and Lyndon Johnson to a major degree became proactive in the Civil Rights movement. Johnson in particular built a coalition that included white churches, Jews, and labor unions, as well as many Republicans such as Everett Dirksen, to build a majority of the northern leadership in favor of action. The Democratic South filibustered but failed stop passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended Jim Crow, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which guaranteed federal oversight of voting rights. In 1957, Governor Orville Faubus of ...
Turkish police fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber pellets on Thursday to stop May Day protesters, some armed with fire bombs, from defying Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and reaching Istanbuls central Taksim Square. Citing security fears, authorities shut parts of the citys public transport system, erected steel barricades and deployed thousands of riot police to block access to Taksim. The square is a traditional union rallying point and the focus of weeks of anti-government protests last summer. Erdogan warned last week he would not let labor unions march on Taksim.

AUD Director Barbara Harvey had another legal victory in her case against Teamsters Local 901, Puerto Rico, winning attorneys fees from the local in a decision filed on March 31, 2014. Harvey covered the original victory in UDR #200 (July/August 2013). In the courts first decision, it found that three elected stewards were unlawfully suspended from membership for six years (two terms of Local office), removed as stewards, and fined $10,000 each, in retaliation for having filed a meritorious post-election complaint with the DOL. The suspensions from membership removed the stewards as political threats for three consecutive terms of office,1 and the fines effectively removed them as adversaries permanently, since none of them was able to pay the steep fine.. The stewards were ostensibly removed on an accusation that they had participated in an unlawful strike by fellow Local 901 members at a different shop, along with other supportive members and stewards from other shops. The Local charged that ...
I had the privilege of giving the keynote address to several hundred union members on April 26, 2014 at an event entitled The Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Modern Healthcare Delivery System. They can be an oppressed and persecuted minority or the exploited in any way. They have been truly betrayed. Their indignation is so pent that it becomes violence. When they finally explode there can be physical violence towards others, or hurling and breaking things, or self injury and self-mutilation. Nervousness and anxiety from violence, anger and insult; there is guilt, shame and humiliation which tend to be suppressed; the military or any other force elements are indicated. From intense Ailments from Anger: that is pent-up, ...
Togo is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital, Lomé is located.. Soon after French Togoland became Togo in 1960, the country instilled military rule, which lasted for nearly four decades under General Gnassingbe Eyadema. Even though the government seemed to allow multi-party elections in the early 1990s, the Rally of the Togolese People (RPT) party has continually been in power since military rule was instated. Even today, its successor, the Union for the Republic, maintains a large majority of legislative seats. Since General Eyademas death in February 2005, his son, Faure Gnassingbe, was installed as Togos president. He is currently still President of Togo. After a relatively free and fair legislative elections in October of 2007, the international community has finally allowed Togo to return to the international community after years of human rights abuses and ...
What Brexit means is demonstrated clearly by fresh Tory plans to assault workers rights. The government fought hard for the right to diverge from EU standards for a reason: and workers rights are among its first targets.. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is putting together plans to scrap the 48-hour week working time directive; cut rest break entitlements; cut holiday pay entitlements by excluding overtime pay from how theyre calculated; and end the requirement for employers to keep proper records on working hours.. Labour movement leaders, both unions and Labour Party, have denounced these plans. Maybe the Tories will retreat for now. Despite employer complaints about over-regulation, most of the big employers arent clamouring for immediate changes. They have learned to live with the mild EU standards.. The more the labour movement show itself willing to fight, the more likely a quick retreat.. Unions will resist attack on workers rights, declared the ...
4)For cases involving methods other than removal, a regular control system should be established, e.g., annual implementation of an inspection of asbestos containment.. (6) Securing disposal sites for asbestos waste. In the years to come, it is projected that a large amount of waste from asbestos construction materials will be generated. As such, final disposal sites should be secured to accommodate both friable and non-friable asbestos waste. In selecting such disposal sites, consideration should be given to minimizing airborne-asbestos risk at the time of natural disasters, and neighborhood residents should be given a full explanation and information concerning the waste disposal status.. (7) Thorough management of asbestos mines. At former asbestos mines, measures to prevent the airborne emission of asbestos fibers due to weathering should be thoroughly implemented and regular inspections should be carried out. In addition to asbestos mines, asbestos-containing stopes should also be subject ...
When the ruling coalition of the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska, PO [1]) and the Polish Peoples Party (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe, PSL [2]) took power in 2007, promises were made to conclude privatisation processes. However, the actions taken in the first year of the governments term did not suggest that the promise would be kept, as the privatisation income turned

The Republic of Nicaragua is a constitutional democracy where elections are held on the basis of universal suffrage. In 2006 in elections that were deemed free and fair, voters elected the legislature and the President, the latter a former Sandinista leader who gained a 9-point lead over his rival. The National Assembly (Asamblea Nacional) has 92 members: 90 are elected for a 5-year term by proportional representation, while the other 2 seats are held by the outgoing President and the runner-up in the most recent presidential election. With proportional representation, the 2-party system is no longer a reality in Nicaragua: 3 parties now dominate the National Assembly: the FSLN with 30 seats, the PLC with 25 seats and the ALN with 22 seats.. Constitutional changes have transferred some presidential powers to the assembly. The Central American Court of Justice declared the reforms a violation of the separation of powers mandated by the constitution. A law has now been adopted to implement the ...
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the worlds largest trade union federation, together with local ITUC affiliates, unveiled the Migrant Workers Recruitment Advisor (MRA) website in Sinhala and Tamil in their efforts to safeguard and protect the rights of Sri Lankas migrant workers. The MRA website, recruitmentadvisor.org, is an easily accessible platform for Sri Lankan migrant workers to share their experience by reviewing recruitment agencies, enabling others seeking similar opportunities to research and find information relevant to their recruitment option. The websites functionality allows workers to comment on their experiences and rate the recruitment agencies while enabling them to learn about their labour rights in the process. Since 2018, the ITUC and local affiliates have been closely engaging with migrant worker communities in Sri Lanka to gather reviews about recruitment experiences to protect locals from pursuing overseas employment with minimal screening and ...

The gender pension gap could be getting wider due to the increasing importance of private (complementary) pension schemes, and their failure to credit women for periods of maternity and parental leave (or other types of care leave). The difference in pension payments for men and women across the EU is 40%, according to the most recent study which was carried out four years ago (in 2013). A survey of 44 trade unions in 29 countries published today by the European Trade Union Confederation shows that
In every serious struggle, unions not only clash with individual bosses, but with their media, their politicians, and the police used in the interests of the top 1%. This is a political battle. Most union leaders today avoid this issue and do all they can to trail the big-business Democratic Party as a lesser evil to the right wing. This is one of the reasons why the working class is isolated politically in the U.S. but the anti-establishment mood is there to rally millions to fight against corporate rule.. With over 90,000 votes, Kshama Sawants 2013 election as the first socialist member of the Seattle City Council in over 100 years spurred a battle to increase the citys minimum wage to $15 an hour. Winning $15 in Seattle last June has inspired similar fights in cities throughout the country. To build on these victories and take advantage of the anger at the establishment, we need a mass working-class party, supported by fighting labor organization and community groups, to run hundreds of ...

This past May, Colorados Democratic governor Jared Polis signed a series of new environmental bills into law, with the enthusiastic backing of the states labor movement. Legislation ranged from expanding community solar gardens to establishing a Just Transition office for coal-dependent communities.. Organized labor in Colorado hasnt always been an ally in the fight against climate change, but beginning in 2018, a Democratic messaging bill that called for 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 forced local unions to start having some tough conversations.. Republicans controlled the Senate, so the bill had no chance of passing, but it forced the conversation on our end as to what do we need to do to get behind these bills in the future, instead of just blocking them or delaying, explained Dennis Dougherty, the executive director of the Colorado AFL-CIO, which represents approximately 165 unions representing more than 130,000 workers. It was really the first time we asked ourselves, well ...
Downloadable! Cash transfer programs are widely used in settings where child labor is prevalent. Although many of these programs are explicitly implemented to improve childrens welfare, in theory their impact on child labor is undetermined. This paper systematically reviews the empirical evidence on the impact of cash transfers, conditional and unconditional, on child labor. The authors find no evidence that cash transfer interventions increase child labor in practice. On the contrary, there is broad evidence that conditional and unconditional cash transfers lower both childrens participation in child labor and hours worked and cushion the effect of economic shocks that may lead households to use child labor as a coping strategy. Boys experience particularly strong decreases in economic activities, girls in household chores. The findings underline the usefulness of cash transfers as a relatively safe policy instrument to improve child welfare, but also point to knowledge gaps, for instance regarding

Contrary to the false impression of the respondent`s director, our jurisprudence fully supports the petitioner`s point of view. In Liberty Cotton Mills Workers Union v Liberty Cotton Mills, Inc.4, the Tribunal expressly cited and upheld the fundamental principle that Aboriginal people are distinct and distinct entities, intended primarily to ensure and maintain equality of bargaining power between the employer and the members of their workers in the economic struggle for the fruits of the joint productive effort of labour and capital; and the indigenous association within the National Union (as PAFLU) promoted the same objective. These associations are consensual entities capable of establishing such legal relations with their members. The main objective was the confirmation by the local trade unions of a joint venture in order to increase, through collective action, joint bargaining power with regard to working and working conditions. Nevertheless, the natives remained the fundamental entities ...

The preliminary health survey of 14 villages around the Roro hills, with 45% of the respondents being former workers of the Roro asbestos mines, indicates a highly probable link between the asbestos exposures and several adverse health effects, such as low back pain, dyspnea (shortness of breath and difficulty breathing), hemoptysis (blood in the lungs, trachea, bronchi, or larynx), blindness, and cancer.. Old local newspaper clippings from Singbhumi Ekta, a weekly from Chaibasa, published between January and August 1981, include a press release from the late P. Mazumdar, the leader of the United Mine Workers Union (AITUC), which says that 30 workers from Roro mines had died of asbestosis.. The goal of this project was to found a stakeholder group that would communicate to the regional and national governments the severity of the issue. The committee would be comprised of community members, ex-workers, NGO representatives and journalists, among others; together, they would discuss and advise ...

The proposal seeks to change the decision-making process so that a dangerous substance could be listed with 75 per cent majority support from voting parties.. Chrysotile asbestos has been repeatedly blocked from the list by countries with financial interests in the asbestos trade, despite it meeting all the scientific criteria for it to be recommended for listing, and having overwhelming support for listing from a majority of parties to the Convention. Two million tonnes of chrysotile asbestos is still mined and sold every year, mostly to the developing world.. It is the health and safety of workers versus the interests and profits of big groups. It is our mission to do everything in our power to change the situation, said Özkan.. Payet emphasized that the Rotterdam Convention does not aim to ban the use or trade of chemicals listed in Annex III, but offers a regulatory framework for countries to decide, for such chemicals, whether they wish to restrict, and to what extent, their future ...
On Nov. 6, approximately 4,200 members of UFCW Local 400, who work at 39 Kroger stores in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract. The contract, which takes effect immediately and extends through August 29, 2020, provides increased pay and maintains healthcare and retirement benefits. Contract negotiations between UFCW Local 400 and Kroger began in early September, and a team of five Kroger employees led negotiations on behalf of the union. At a time when many retailers are cutting healthcare and retirement benefits, the unionized workforce successfully preserved their benefits while also winning wage increases. The workers attribute their success to weeks of public demonstrations held during the negotiation process.. I think we made it clear to the company that we were willing to fight to protect our benefits, said Tami Faulknier, a 34-year Kroger employee who served on the union negotiating team.. Our customers were overwhelmingly supportive and I ...
This article first appeared in the July/August 2020 issue of the American Postal Worker magazine). The modern movement for postal banking in the United States was born out of the ashes of the 2008-2009 Great Recession. One of the early effects of the financial crisis that set off the recession was the closure of hundreds of bank branches throughout the country. This trend continued for years after the recession. Between 2008 and 2016, more than 6,000 bank branches closed, leaving many former customers without access to basic financial services and laying bare the sheer magnitude of the crisis affecting Americas 80 million unbanked and underbanked people.. As observers and policymakers studied possible solutions to addressing their needs, postal banking reemerged as a viable and practical solution. Today, as the pandemic grinds the economy to a halt and millions of workers are out of their jobs, postal banking is once again gaining attention as this crisis reveals other systemic problems in the ...
In the third phase, the findings were discussed with actors from the worlds of occupational safety and politics. The project was concluded with a report in which the results were presented and recommendations were made regarding occupational safety, health management and related areas of policy.. The final report was presented on 5th May 2017 at a shared event with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), the Confederation of German Employers Associations (BDA) and the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). It provides the basis for the dialogue process behind Mental Health in the Working World.. Providing scientific support, and in its role as Chair of the National Conference for Occupational Safety (NAK), BAuA is participating in the dialogue process which is overseen by the BMAS, the DGB and the BDA. This aims to support the organisational implementation of appropriate measures for the supporting and strengthening of mental health. For this purpose, an intensive ...

Now, as a member of the recruiting team for the Strategic Management Planning Office, Im involved in hiring new graduates, and in particular, as the person in charge of hiring international students, Im responsible for information sessions, selection, and follow-up right until hiring. I also play a central role in following up on hiring activities in our local Vietnamese subsidiary branch. My dream for the future is to further expand JESCOs reach from its current Japan and ASEAN scope and contribute to the world more broadly. To help make that happen, I am going to work harder at studying languages so that I can become a global human ...
The Politbarometer surveys are undertaken to assess the attitudes and opinions of eligible German voters on current events and problems, as well as on parties and politicians. The topics covered in the 1998 German election study fall into two broad categories: (1) Topics consistently covered in the monthly Politbarometer surveys in 1998 include: voting intention and party preference, voting behavior in the last federal parliamentary elections, sympathy scale for the parties, interest of the respondent in politics and self-assessed position on a left-right political continuum, assessment of the economic situation in the Federal Republic (and anticipated further development), and the respondents own economic situation (and expected development). (2) Topics covered in at least one month during the survey year include: satisfaction with democracy, activities of the federal government and opposition parties, competence of the government and opposition parties, attitudes toward political coalitions, ...

All tobacco advertising in the European Union will be gradually scaled down from 2001 and banned completely five years later under a landmark agreement reached by European Union health ministers last week.. Although many antitobacco organisations would have liked the new legislation to have been even stricter (it allows several temporary exemptions) and to have come fully into force earlier, they have still welcomed the breakthrough in the long running negotiations. Obviously we would have much preferred a shorter time scale, said Andrew Hayes, EU liaison officer for the Association of European Cancer Leagues. However, it has taken several years to get this far, without knowing that the directive would be … ...
