This study utilizes time-series data from 1897-2005 to explore the positive and negative effects of rivalry between labor unions. Utilizing econometric factors, it also investigates how competition from rival union federations and independent unions affects union density. Variables include counts of pro-labor and pro-management unfair labor practice cases adjudicated by the National Labor Relations Board, competitor union membership ratio and number ratio, the annual percentage change in union density, and the percentage change in the density of AFL/AFL-CIO membership. Other variables include the percentage of United States House members who belong to the Democratic Party, the percentage of popular votes in presidential elections that favored Socialist or Communist parties, core employment and unemployment, the consumer price index (CPI), and the labor union historical periods: Western Labor Union (WLU), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), Trade Union Unity League (TUUL), Congress of ...
The following is the full text of the scheme of federation as adopted by the seventh Intercolonial Trades and Labor Congress recently held at Ballarat:-. PREAMBLE.. It is desirable for the maintenance and furtherance of unionism in Australasia that a definite federation of labor unions shall be instituted, which federation, while leaving to each individual union or local aggregation of unions full self-government in their own particular affairs, will be a means for securing unity of purpose and action on all general matters and for facilitating the mutual co-operation of affiliated unions whenever necessary for the common welfare. Prior to World War II, in many European countries there developed different labor federations for Catholics, Socialists, Communists and liberals. All of these unions were abolished by the Nazi or other Right-Wing regimes in Axis Europe. The Vatican and others believed this division in the labor movement weakened its ability to defeat Nazism and other Right Wing totalitarian movements. After World War II, the Vatican discouraged re-formation of Christian trade unions (i.e. Catholic aligned labor unions) although it was not always successful.[4] As an alternative to Catholic-based unions that negotiated contracts and represented workers to management, Christian worker associations were created as an educational, spiritual and social action movement rather than as a specific labor union. In the 1950s, the Catholic workers associations of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands decided to join forces to create an international structure to encourage exchanges and ...

Republicans have sought the opportunity to squash unions nationwide for a long time, and now that they control both chambers of Congress and the White House theyll finally have an opportunity to do it.. It probably wont earn me any new friends on the left, but I believe some of the nations biggest unions are partially responsible for this because I believe theyre partially responsible for the election of Donald Trump.. First, the obvious. Union households voted for the Republican candidate in the highest numbers since 1984. Hillary Clinton won the union vote by just 8 percent, while President Obama won the union vote by 18 percent in 2012.. Why is that?. Sure, Trump did his part by making wild claims about our international trade partners and misleading people about the true sources of their so-called economic anxiety, but so did some of the biggest labor unions in the country and many other voices on the left.. Labor union spokespersons and leadership and the likes of Bernie Sanders ...
Our Gospel this Labor Day weekend is the story of the laborers in the vineyard; it explores a number of important ideas. Hearing the story again helps us to consider what is fair and just in terms of how the workers are compensated, despite the hours that they worked. It also includes that oft-quoted line, the first shall be last and the last shall be first, which, I believe, is intended to provide us with a much broader understanding of how we are viewed in the eyes of our creator…that those who are often among the least or the last are seen as a high priority in the heart of our God. When we read this story, I think so many of us can understand the grumbling of those who worked all the extra hours and will be paid the same as those who came later. Of course, its a larger story about generosity in the eyes of our God who wants us all to live abundantly. This is Labor Day weekend and so I thought a story about the laborers would be important for us to reflect upon this day. Let us pray, O ...
Craft-oriented labor unions, such as carpenters, printers, shoemakers and cigar makers, grew steadily in the industrial cities after 1870. These unions used frequent short strikes as a method to attain control over the labor market, and fight off competing unions.[68] They generally blocked women, blacks and Chinese from union membership, but welcomed most European immigrants.[69]. The railroads had their own separate unions.[70] An especially large episode of unrest (estimated at eighty thousand railroad workers and several hundred thousand other Americans, both employed and unemployed) broke out during the economic depression of the 1870s and became known as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, which was, according to historian Jack Beatty, the largest strike anywhere in the world in the 19th century.[71] This strike did not involve labor unions, but rather uncoordinated outbursts in numerous cities. The strike and associated riots lasted 45 days and resulted in the deaths of several hundred ...

Born as Luiz Inácio da Silva on 27 October 1945 in the rural state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, Lula was the seventh of eight children. A few months after his birth, his father abandoned his family to go work in the nearby port city of Porto de Santos. Lula grew up with his mother, first meeting his father when he was five years old. During his childhood years, Lula experienced poverty and dispossession. In 1956, his mother divorced his father and took the children to São Paulo, Brazils industrial and financial capital. Living in poverty, Lula left school and found a job at a laundry store at age 12. At age 14, he was already working at a factory. In 1964, the military overthrew the civilian government and installed General Humberto Castelo Branco as president. Repression against labor union leaders was common. It was during this time that Luiz Inácio, at age 21, began to work in a steel company where he first became associated with labor unions. Luiz Inácios older brother, ...

In an era when corporate profits have soared while wages have flatlined, millions of Americans are searching for ways to improve their lives, and theyre often turning to labor unions and worker action, whether #RedforEd teachers strikes or the Fight for $15. Wage stagnation, low-wage work, and blighted blue-collar communities have become an all-too-common part of modern-day America, and behind these trends is a little-discussed problem: the decades-long decline in worker power.. The standoff at North Dakotas Standing Rock Sioux Reservation - with Indian tribes and supporters on one side, and police and private security for the Dakota Access Pipeline on the other - also finds labor union members on both sides.. North Americas Building Trades Unions and the AFL-CIO have come out in favor of the project moving forward, because its a big source of union jobs. But other labor organizations have declared support for pipeline protesters, and in Oregon and Washington, a number of union members have traveled to Standing Rock to take part in the massive protest encampment - a nonviolent uprising that has united Indian tribes nationwide.. reports that the union intends to make one point clear: This is a different kind of union. No strikes. No recruiting of doctors. The AMA hopes to convey the point that unionization is a last resort for doctors who cannot settle their grievances any other way. Todd Vande Hey, AMA vice president of private sector advocacy and a member of the unions governing body, said, Traditional labor unions do not and have not promoted a professional image or an image that is consistent with principles that physicians feel must be paramount. Strike provisions or withholding services is unacceptable to them. Vande Hey added, Clearly, this is a statement that physicians want and feel that a message needs to be sent about just how frustrated they are -- that individual voices no longer suffice. And insurers apparently are taking notice. Some observers have said that AMAs activism has prompted insurers to alleviate tension with doctors, taking such actions as including doctors on decision-making ...
The All-India Trade Union Congress held its eighth annual session at Cawnpore in the last week of November, 1927. Out of fifty-seven affiliated trade unions, with a total membership of 125,000, only twenty-seven were represented at the Congress by about 100 delegates. In his presidential speech, Mr. Chaman Lal advocated the collection of a large central fund of ten lacs ( 75,000) for the development of trade union organisation. On the Simon Commission, he called for the withdrawal of the British Labour members and declared that it was necessary to warn the British Labour Party that their party as a whole had betrayed the confidence we had placed in it. The report for the year shows the affiliation of two new unions. Many more had been formed during the year, but by a resolution recently adopted no trade union can affiliate until it has been in existence for more than a year. By Government orders, two of the postmens unions had withdrawn from the Congress and others were likely to follow. Even ...
Yablonskis murder sparked federal action. On January 8, 1970, Yablonskis attorney requested an immediate investigation of the 1969 election by DOL.[citation needed] The Department of Labor had taken no action on Yablonskis complaints while he lived. But after his murder, Labor Secretary George P. Shultz assigned 230 investigators to the UMWA investigation.[citation needed] The Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA) of 1959 regulates the internal affairs of labor unions, requiring regular secret-ballot elections for local union offices and providing for federal investigation of election fraud or impropriety. DOL is authorized under the act to sue in federal court to have the election overturned. By 1970, however, only three international union elections had been overturned by the courts.[5] Meanwhile, a reform group, Miners for Democracy (MFD), had formed in April 1970 while the DOL investigation continued. Its members included most of the miners who belonged to the West ...

With no fresh batches of workers to politicalize and organize, the trade union groups are now certain to languish in stasis. No fresh blood, no additional union dues for education and organizational work, no second rising for the labor unions. As one with very little ambition in life, the only associations I joined have been journalist guilds and peasant groups. From a personal realm, the failure to end endo and give the trade unions a fresh base to organize and train on unionism was a big let-down.. The Filipino workingman is still waiting for the fulfilment of Mr. Dutertes promise to strengthen manufacturing and resurrect the dead but vital industries - steel, textile, rubber and chemicals. Although the Burmese law allows formation of trade unions in the factories, in reality the employers discourage them from doing so. Those who do join the workers union, are under constant oppression from the employers and even face the risk of losing their jobs or are discriminated at the workplace. Thae said that sometimes, there are two labour unions in one factory - one formed by the employer and the other formed by the workers. At the time of meeting with the authorities in the factory, the employers allow only their union to meet them. Some factories make the workers sign a contract at the time of joining promising to obey the rules and regulations of the factory, no matter how unjust. Under such conditions, it remains very challenging to empower more women to participate in the workers rights movement, since they lack free time for these activities. Women are still closed in the stereotype gender box that a patriarchal society has made for them and it would take time for them to come out ...
Historically, organized labor in Bolivia had been one of the most politically active and powerful in Latin America. Owing to the importance of mining in the economy, the Trade Union Federation of Bolivian Mineworkers (Federac on Sindical de Trabajadores Mineros de Bolivia -- FSTMB) has been the backbone of organized labor since the mid-1940s. Before the 1952 Revolution, the FSTMB orchestrated opposition to the three dominant tin barons and led protests against worker massacres. During the first few days of the revolution, the MNR founded the COB in order to group the FSTMB and the other labor unions under an umbrella organization that would be subordinate to the party. In creating the COB, the MNR was following the example of Mexicos PRI, which effectvely controlled labor through the partys structures. In Bolivia the COB and especially the FSTMB, which controlled labor in the nationalized mining sector, pushed for worker comanagement and cogovernment. Moreover, worker militias were allowed to ...
Most adult Americans, in fact, do not receive government assistance to pay for behavioral healthcare. They receive health insurance from an employer, labor union, or professional association, or purchase it themselves. Roughly 50 million adult Americans working in the private sector receive employer-provided healthcare for themselves and/or their families. In comparison, 11 million adult Americans are covered by Medicaid, 6 million under age 65 by Medicare, and slightly fewer than 5 million by TRICARE, the Department of Defenses healthcare system. If all private-sector employers purchasing healthcare coverage spoke with a single voice, the numbers alone suggest that they would have more leverage than the federal government over mental healthcare coverage and practices. Of course, this principle is weakened somewhat by the fact that some private-sector insurance plans exclude behavioral healthcare treatment. However, even when employer-provided healthcare lacks explicit behavioral health ...
This study of 438 women aged 18-65 in the Detroit metropolitan area in 1974 provides information on their participation in the labor force. Data are provided on the job histories of respondents, up to 14 previous occupations in order to assess the nature of work, length of stay on the job, and the status of public or private employment. Other questions probed respondents feelings about equal job opportunities for men and women, equal privileges for women and men, the removal of the glass ceiling for women in Americas corporate and political life, the implications for the marriage if a wife earned more than her ...

M1977.L3 S66 1973. Local 8 was an interracial, multi-ethnic local that was part of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a militant, left-wing labor union. From its inception, the IWW has been committed to racial equality, though African Americans played a relatively small role in the organization. By contrast, Local 8, a branch of Philadelphia longshoremen, possessed the IWWs largest contingent of African Americans as well as its most significant black leader, Ben Fletcher.. Also called the Wobblies, the IWW believed in equal treatment for African Americans. Article I, Section I of the IWW Constitution declared that all workers, regardless of color or creed, could join the IWW. The IWW believed that all wage workers, regardless of their ethnic, national, or racial heritage, should identify as workers in opposition to their employers, with whom workers shared nothing in common.. Local 8 proved the IWWs ideology could work in practice. In 1913 several thousand longshoremen, who loaded ...

The Supreme Court on Monday decided against imposing a new requirement on employer pension plans. In a unanimous decision the justices said companies do not have a duty to consider an invitation to merge their pension plans as an alternative to terminating them. The ruling came in the case of Crown Vantage Inc. a bankrupt paper company that received a merger proposal from a labor union pension fund to cover Crowns 17 pension plans.
The workforce, the way I see it, is entitled to negotiate for a just wage and have its own choice of labour union. So why cant the management and the unions work out a just deal? I was shocked to read recently in the Sunday Times the challenge thrown at Sri Lanka by Mike Thompson, Chairman UCL, where he says that Unilever would pull out of Sri Lanka its manufacturing facilities, if the labour situation is not in accordance with management requirements. As a Sri Lankan I am deeply with its people, and I would say that if Unilever accedes to Thompsons proposition, U.K. business would lose a gold mine out of several the British have on our soil. It is no joke! Lever Brothers of Sunlight fame set up a soap manufacturing plant prior to Independence because Sri Lanka had nearly 100 percent of the ingredients, including labour for such a venture. While third world countries produced coconut and palm oil, their populations were told by soap manufacturing conglomerates, not to consume the same for ...
If present trends continue, there will be a concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands as workers are systematically replaced by automation, robotization and cheap Third World labor. As there is more and more widespread unemployment, workers will lose any power they once had as labor unions become impotent in the face of the fact that physical and mental labor has become expendable to a greater and greater extent. Eventually a political oligarchy and economic plutocracy comprised of the same people will replace the society that was once grounded in a large middle class. The fact that farmers are being driven off their land, that the family farm is becoming extinct, is another manifestation of the expendability of broadly based human labor power. Instead of a society composed of a large number of small farmers and independent small businessmen, a yeomenry, people are being stripped of their land, stripped of their independence in large numbers and forced to rely on the society as a whole ...

United Airlines said Wednesday it would be forced to file for bankruptcy protection this fall unless its labor unions agreed to significant concessions within the next 30 days. Just three days after US Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a day after American Airlines announced deep cutbacks, Uniteds warning underscored how the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks continued to roil the industry. The warning was a stark message to Uniteds unions to cooperate in belt- tightening but also a signal to the government of the airlines urgent efforts to land $1.8 billion in federal loan guarantees, experts said. A bankruptcy filing by United, the nations second largest carrier and the dominant presence at San Francisco International Airport, would have minimal or no impact on passengers, tickets or frequent flier miles, industry watchers said. Bankruptcy would be a nonevent from the standpoint of their customers, said Alan Gover, a Houston attorney who represented creditors during

Just over a quarter century ago, when I was a young scribbler traipsing around the metro desk of the Baltimore Sun, I had an early opportunity to learn a lesson about money, about ethics, about capitalism and, in particular, about the American entertainment industry. And Dorothy Simon, she raised no fools. I only needed to learn it once.. I learned about something called packaging.. And now, finally, my apostasy from newspapering having delivered me from Baltimore realities to film-set make-believe, I am suprised and delighted that many of the fellow scribblers with whom I share a labor union have at last acquired the same hard, ugly lesson:. Packaging is a lie. It is theft. It is fraud. In the hands of the right U.S. Attorney, it might even be prima facie evidence of decades of racketeering. Its that fucking ugly.. For those of you not in the film and television world, there is no shame in tuning out right now because at its core, the argument over packaging now ongoing between film and ...

Dany Ortegas lecturing the United States on the causes of violence and the spiritual destruction of savage capitalism (NT, May 18) is something akin to Vlad the Impaler complaining that his neighbor mistreats his poodle.. Mr. Ortega surely is the one to consult about violence. His wild enthusiasm for it and his experience in inflicting it on his countrymen certainly qualifies him as an expert.. His efforts at correcting the errors of savage capitalism in Nicaragua in the 1980s included neighborhood snitch committees (Comités de Defensa Sandinista), and ruthless control of the press, labor unions and the private economy, which he managed to wreck in short order.. In the years Mr. Ortega ran Nicaragua, thousands of political opponents were killed or imprisoned as were thousands of native Indians.. Like his much-admired heroes, Mao and Stalin, Dany used government-created famine as a weapon.. This adds impressive weight to Mr. Ortegas credentials as an expert on the causes ...

Sri Lanka had previously announced a phasing out of asbestos starting 1 January 2018, with a full ban planned by 2024.. Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), said: Imposing chrysotile asbestos on an unwilling nation is not fair trade, it is culpable homicide. Unions worldwide abhor this cynical economic blackmail. Russia must not and will not be allowed to blow a hole in fair trade rules. This desperate bid to try to force continued markets for Russias deadly asbestos trade must be condemned and resisted, said Fiona Murie, BWI Global Director, Construction and Health and Safety. We are concerned for workers and the community in Sri Lanka who are being exposed to this cancer-causing material and urge the Sri Lankan Government to push ahead with its decision to ban chrysotile asbestos as soon as possible she said. The National Trade Union Federation of Sri Lanka (NTUF) has strongly urged the government to return to the ban timetable already ...

8 October 2003 The Congress of South African Trade Unions is giving its full support to two important protests being organised by its fellow trade unionists in Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is organising a day of mass action, including work stoppages, today, 8 October, in protest again the ever increasing cost of living, the high level of taxation, the cash crisis and the stifling of trade union activ ities by the government. COSATU has already expressed its concern at the attacks on of basic trade union rights by the Zimbabwe government and the growth of mass poverty amongst the majority of the population. The situation is getting worse and we wish the ZCTU every success i n their just and legitimate day of protest. We call on the government not to try to use the state forces to disrupt the protests or to attack the workers taking part. COSATU also reiterates its view that there needs to be social dialogue between government and opposition parties, and the whole of ...
Under the Tories proposed new law, strike ballots would need a 50% turnout for industrial action to be legal. But in the case of essential public services - health, education, transport and fire services - 40% of those voting have to have voted in favour. In other words, 80% which is the combination of the general turnout proposal and the new 40% yes vote must have voted in favour. That would make almost all strikes illegal, particularly in large and dispersed workforces where postal ballots rarely achieve this. This is a blatant attack on the rightful role of trade unions in being able to protect their members against exploitation at work - several recent polls have consistently found that more than 70% of the public believe unions are essential to protect workers interests.. There are several other arguments against this vindictive piece of legislation. The proposed rules dont apply in any other elections. If only ballots with a turnout of more than 50% are to be taken as valid, then ...

The struggle to ensure the retirements of millions of hardworking Americans continues. But the reintroduction of essential legislation by a long-time pension protector could go a long way toward bolstering nest eggs jeopardized under the current system.. Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, the new chairman of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee, unveiled legislation this week that would improve the security of multiemployer pensions covering 1.5 million Americans that currently are facing insolvency. And given the lawmakers new prominent position, the bill has an excellent chance of advancing through the House.. The bipartisan bill, which has five Democratic and five Republican co-sponsors, is badly needed. As it stands, there are more than 300 multiemployer plans across the country - including the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund - that are in danger of failing. The Teamsters have been fighting for years for a legislative solution and are anxious again to work with members of both ...

Irresponsible trade union action cost the lives of six innocent patients after health services were crippled last week at the Ratnapura General Hospital. The drama began on May 2 after a nurse attached to the hospital allegedly had a verbal confrontation with a doctor. The trivial incident developed into a major tragedy which ultimately cost the lives of these innocent patients. The latest and the most unfortunate victims were three infants who died due to lack of proper medical care on Friday. Who are those responsible for the six deaths? Isn t this a heinous crime? In the first instance, why does the Health Ministry allow trade unions to play havoc and cause untimely deaths? We must find immediate answers to these questions and take remedial action to ensure that this type of unfortunate incidents do not recur in the future. The doctor, who was apparently verbally abused by a nurse, took up the matter with his trade union. We do not know the banter which took place but it reached a level which ...

The combined effects of turbocharging, high fuel injection pressure, and reduced oil consumption on diesel exhaust emissions were investigated using a single-cylinder research engine. The influence of these exhaust emission control concepts on particulate composition was determined using a new particulate analysis method. In addition, the dependence of particulate composition on engine load and air utilization was examined using the microfumigation technique. Simultaneous application of these emissions control concepts reduced exhaust particulates by 70 percent. High injection pressure reduced the insoluble component of particulates, while reducing oil consumption and turbocharging the engine lowered both soluble and insoluble particulates. Reductions in oil-derived particulates with increasing engine load were partially attributed to increases in volumetric air utilization. Ninety percent of the lube oil found in exhaust particulates was unburned; however, similar concentrations of unburned and ...
