Abstract La Crosse (LAC) virus was isolated from 3 suspensions of Aedes triseriatus larvae and from 1 suspension of male mosquitoes reared from larvae collected from basal tree-holes in Wisconsin during March, April, May, and June of 1973. Isolations of this virus were also obtained from 5 suspensions of A. triseriatus larvae and 4 suspensions of male mosquitoes originating from old automobile tires. Virus transmission to suckling mice was accomplished by female A. triseriatus reared from larvae collected from the tires. Only two tree-holes and the tires yielded LAC virus-infected larvae and adults. The minimum field infection rate (MFIR) for these tree-holes and the tires, based on one infected larva per pool, was 1/110 larvae from the tree-holes and 1/20 larvae from the tires. The MFIR for adults was 1/41 male mosquitoes originating from one of the tree-holes and 1/27 for male mosquitoes originating from the tires. The MFIR for female mosquitoes reared from larvae collected from the tires was 1/110.
La Crosse virus (LACV) (genus Orthobunyavirus, family Peribunyaviridae) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes pediatric encephalitis and accounts for 50-150 human cases annually in the USA. Human cases occur primarily in the Midwest and Appalachian regions whereas documented human cases occur very rarely in the northeastern USA. Following detection of a LACV isolate from a field-collected mosquito in Connecticut during 2005, we evaluated the prevalence of LACV infection in local mosquito populations and genetically characterized virus isolates to determine whether the virus is maintained focally in this region. During 2018, we detected LACV in multiple species of mosquitoes, including those not previously associated with the virus. We also evaluated the phylogenetic relationship of LACV strains isolated from 2005-2018 in Connecticut and found that they formed a genetically homogeneous clade that was most similar to strains from New York State. Our analysis argues for local isolation and long-term
We characterized a La Crosse virus (LACV) isolate from the brain of a child who died of encephalitis-associated complications in eastern Tennessee, USA, during summer 2012. We compared the isolate with LACV sequences from mosquitoes collected near the childs home just after his postmortem diagnosis. In addition, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of these and other sequences derived from LACV strains representing varied temporal, geographic, and ecologic origins. Consistent with historical findings, results of these analyses indicate that a limited range of LACV lineage I genotypes is associated with severe clinical outcomes ...
Abstract The tropisms and development of La Crosse (LAC) virus in stages of transovarially infected Aedes triseriatus were studied with fluorescent antibody (FA) stained dissected organs and titrations of individual arthropods in suckling mice. Viral antigen was detected by FA in 95 of 387 dissected larvae, pupae, and adults. In larvae highest levels of fluorescence were detected in the alimentary tract, followed by ganglia, malpighian tubule, muscle, and other tissues. No specific organs or germ layer-derived tissues appeared to be the sole source of viral replication. Most tissues and organs of A. triseriatus are capable of maintaining LAC virus. Antigen was detected in the identifiable organs immediately upon emergence from the egg. In pupae and adults antigen was detected at high levels in foregut, gonadal and associated tissues, and in salivary glands, which would indicate females could be infective upon emergence. Virus was isolated from all arthropod stages, in 32 of 130 individuals inoculated
La Crosse encephalitis virus (LACV) is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Most cases of LACV disease occur in the upper Midwestern and mid-Atlantic and southeastern states (see map).. Many people infected with LACV have no apparent symptoms. Among people who become ill, initial symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness. Some of those who become ill develop severe neuroinvasive disease (disease that affects the nervous system). Severe LACV disease often involves encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain) and can include seizures, coma, and paralysis. Severe disease occurs most often in children under the age of 16. In rare cases, long-term disability or death can result from La Crosse encephalitis.. There is no specific treatment for LACV infection-- care is based on symptoms. If you or a family member have symptoms of severe LACV disease or any symptoms causing you concern, consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis.. The best way to ...
Arboviruses include mosquitoborne and tickborne agents that persist in nature in complex cycles involving birds or mammals, including humans. Arboviral infection can cause fever, headache, meningitis, encephalitis, and sometimes death. During 1996-1997, health departments in 19 states reported to CDC 286 confirmed or probable * cases (eight fatal) of arboviral encephalitis in humans (132 cases in 1996 and 154 provisionally in 1997). Surveillance programs in 18 states detected enzootic arboviral activity in mosquito or sentinel or wild bird populations, and cases of arboviral disease were recognized among horses or emus in 24 states. This report summarizes information about arboviral infection of the central nervous system in the United States during 1996-1997. La Crosse Encephalitis During 1996-1997, a total of 252 La Crosse encephalitis (LAC) cases (103 confirmed and 149 probable; one fatal) were reported from 12 states. Patients ranged in age from 5 months to 78 years (mean: 9 years), and 95% ...

We reviewed medical records from all 9 case-patients initial illnesses and abstracted data using a standard form. We contacted patients and, after obtaining consent, administered a questionnaire to assess any residual weakness in the patients and their current functional status according to the modified Rankin scale (a standardized measure of disability for persons with neurologic conditions, by which a score of 0 is normal and 5 denotes severe disability) (8). If the patient was ,18 years of age at the time of the follow-up interview, we obtained permission from a parent or guardian and administered the questionnaire to the parents. For patients with unclear neurologic findings or diagnosis, a board-certified neurologist performed a follow-up neurologic examination. We obtained human ethics approval for this investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Institutional Review Board.. We defined AFP as a clinical syndrome of rapid-onset extremity weakness, sometimes ...

By Terry Rindfleisch, La Crosse Tribune, Wis. Jul. 8--Sexually transmitted diseases continue to be a public health concern in La Crosse County. For the past several years, STDs have been on the rise, and that didnt change much last year, according to the 2007 La Crosse County Health Department annual report. The number of gonorrhea cases in the county more than doubled, from 27 in 2006 to 62 in 2007. The first episode of genital herpes also increased significantly from 74 in 2006 to 108 last year. The good news is the number of chlamydia cases dropped for the first time in several years from 355 to 335, but Doug Mormann said the number is still too high. STDs continue to be a problem, but its not a unique problem to our county, said Mormann, director of the La Crosse County Health Department. We always have a new group of people who need to be educated in that area.. The number of AIDS and HIV cases dropped in 2007 -- from nine AIDS cases in 2006 to three last year and 13 HIV cases in 2006 ...

Scientists have determined that La Crosse virus (LACV), which can cause inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis, in children, affects brain cells differently depending on their developmental stage. Neurons-the primary brain cells of the central nervous system-evolve from neural stem cells and during development commit to becoming neurons. A new National Institutes of Health study shows that uncommitted neural stems cells generally survive LACV infection, while LACV often kills neurons. The study also shows that neurons infected by LACV can be rescued by interferon, a powerful antiviral protein. The study results appear in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.. LACV is spread by mosquitoes and was first identified in the early 1960s. Most infections in people are mild but the virus sometimes-particularly in children-enters the brain, infects neurons and causes disease ranging from learning and memory difficulties to paralysis, seizures and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ...
Mosquito-borne diseases or mosquito-borne illnesses are diseases caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. They can transmit disease without being affected themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito borne illness each year resulting in greater than one million deaths. Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include: malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, filariasis, tularemia, dirofilariasis, Japanese encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, Ross River fever, Barmah Forest fever, La Crosse encephalitis, and Zika fever.[better source needed] The female mosquito of the genus Anopheles carries the malaria parasite (see Plasmodium). Worldwide, malaria is a leading cause of premature mortality, particularly in children under the age of five, with an estimated 207 million cases and more than half a million deaths in 2012, according to the World Malaria Report ...

Mosquito-borne diseases are diseases of humans and/or animals caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. The list of mosquito-borne diseases is long (e.g., malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, filariasis, La Crosse encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, etc.).. According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes cause millions of deaths every year. Vector control has been an effective tool to control mosquito populations historically and continues today with conventional and updated tools. Integrated mosquito management (IMM) and integrated vector management (IVM) programs and guides have been developed to address the complexities of effective vector control strategies. The IVM approach is to improve the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, ecological soundness and sustainability of disease-vector control.. ...

Summer can be itchy, and not because you were foolish enough to acquire a really bad sunburn or a wool bikini. No, the number one itch-creator in the summer is (ugh!) mosquitoes! Mosquitoes love the warm weather as much as college coeds love spring break. Theyre just about as tenacious, too (the mosquitoes, that is). Although nobody ever invites mosquitoes to an outdoor party, they always tend to show up and wreak havoc. And it can be even worse if they get into your house, because now youre living with the little suckers, which means youre on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.. But more than just an itchy nuisance, mosquitoes can be a health hazard, as well. These tiny winged creatures spread disease faster than a flu-infested toddler, distributing everything from West Nile Virus to La Crosse encephalitis to malaria. How is that possible? Because mosquitoes become carriers of human-born diseases when they feed off infected people. Even though mosquitoes dont suffer from the ...

So the June day finally came to actually catch out. I rode the bus over to La Crosse, WI where I was pretty sure that I could catch out undetected. My plan was to hike a mile or two from the bus drop off point on the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse campus to a secluded spot along the BNSF mainline where I would wait for dark and a suitable train.. As luck would have it, it was a rainy day. I had looked at the weather forecast and determined that the front triggering the rain would be past La Crosse by early evening leaving me decent weather to catch out in. I arrived in La Crosse to a moderate and steady rainfall. I was well prepared, I had a rain cover for my giant pack as well as rain gear for myself. I bought a cheep rain suit from Walmart that consisted of waterproof pants and jacket. Continue reading The Summer of Train Hopping! Part III →. ...

I believe that healthy neighborhoods depend upon people feeling free and secure to interact directly with one another. The COVID pandemic has been a heavy burden for us all, and it will be a struggle to overcome the feelings of isolation and hopelessness that we have had to deal with. If elected, I would look forward to engaging with the La Crosse Neighborhoods, Inc., (LCNI) and specifically with the Springbrook Clayton Johnson Neighborhood Association. We need to rebuild peoples confidence to come out of our homes and to engage with one another once it becomes safe when our current public health emergency subsides. There are areas of district 13 that are not included in the LCNI. I would like to explore the possibility of including those residential areas into LCNI with the establishment of new neighborhood associations as needed.. ...

Mosquito-borne diseases occur annually in West Virginia beginning in early spring and peaking in August and September, coinciding with mosquito activity. Arboviral infections, particularly La Crosse encephalitis (LAC) and West Nile virus (WNV), are endemic mosquito-borne diseases identified in West Virginia. In 2016, eight LAC cases and one WNV case were reported in West Virginia. Persons with severe arboviral infections will often have symptoms of encephalitis. Please be vigilant in identifying such cases, and ensure that all hospitalized patients with encephalitis undergo appropriate arboviral disease testing during mosquito season.. The Zika virus disease is reportable to the local health department (LHD) within 24 hours since it is an emerging disease of public health concern. To prevent local and sexual transmission and infections in pregnant women at-risk of having adverse birth outcomes, prompt public health action is needed. In 2016 , 11 Zika virus cases were reported in West Virginia. ...
In the United States, improperly stored tires serve as an excellent breeding habitat for several mosquito species that transmit a number of potentially deadly human and animal diseases. These diseases include La Crosse Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and, in the past, Dengue and Yellow Fever. The commercial trade in scrap tires is also responsible for the recent introduction and spread of the Asian Tiger Mosquito, Aedes albopictus. We have not yet solved the problem of economic disposal of scrap tires. The EPA estimates 3 billion tires currently litter the landscape of the USA and the pile grows by 300,000 every year. Public health authorities have become obsessed with tire disposal; nearly every state has new laws and new taxes on tire disposal. Unfortunately, these measures lead to a great deal of illegal dumping. When landfills are closed to tires (very frequent at present), the tires get dumped in rural or wilderness areas when nobody is looking. Furtive ...

Lassa virus (LASV) causes deadly hemorrhagic fever disease for which there are no vaccines and limited treatments. LASV-encoded L polymerase is required for viral RNA replication and transcription. The functional domains of L-a large protein of 2218 amino acid residues-are largely undefined, except for the centrally located RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) motif. Recent structural and functional analyses of the N-terminal region of the L protein from lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), which is in the same Arenaviridae family as LASV, have identified an endonuclease domain that presumably cleaves the cap structures of host mRNAs in order to initiate viral transcription. Here we present a high-resolution crystal structure of the N-terminal 173-aa region of the LASV L protein (LASV L173) in complex with magnesium ions at 1.72 Å. The structure is highly homologous to other known viral endonucleases of arena- (LCMV NL1), orthomyxo- (influenza virus PA), and bunyaviruses (La Crosse virus ...

In response to #17 by Linn,. If there was more natural variability in the past as shown in MBH98/99, e.g. as the Moberg reconstruction shows, that doesnt necessary lead to the conclusion that climate is more responsive to greenhouse gases (GHGs).. That would only be true, if the climate response was the same for the amount of energy retained by GHGs, as for the incoming energy from sunlight reaching the earth. But part of the suns influence is in the stratosphere, where CO2 (unlike some other GHGs) doesnt play an important role. This leads to changes in Jet Stream position and in general (and specific low) cloud cover, fortifying the solar signal. No matter what (unknown) physical process causes the changes in cloud cover, these changes are observed during a sun cycle. See: http://folk.uio.no/jegill/papers/2002GL015646.pdf. If there was more natural variation in the past millenia, specifically due to solar changes, then that goes at the cost of the GHG/aerosol combination, as both are near ...
TUESDAY, June 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- So many questions remain unanswered about COVID-19, including whether the pandemic coronavirus will wane with warmer weather, like some other respiratory viruses. In search of an answer, researchers at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., studied the effects of temperature, precipitation and sunlight (UV index) on the number of COVID-19 cases across the United States during the spring. The investigators found that the rate of infections declined as temperatures warmed up to 52 degrees Fahrenheit. But reductions beyond that temperature threshold were modest. A higher UV index also slowed new cases, but the effect was modest, and rain appeared to have no effect, the study found.
