Kuwait is situated in Southwest Asia, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. A prosperous trade center for many centuries, Kuwait came to greater international prominence in the post-World War II era largely because of its strategic location at the head of the Persian Gulf and oil revenues. In the postwar period, these men have supported the strengthening of democratic participation in decision making, as provided for in the Constitution. Considering the number of expats in Kuwait, you need at least 5 representatives in the parliament and maybe even a minister or two. You need to be Brazilian to play on the National Brazilian football team, you need to be Spanish to play on the Spanish National team and you need to be Lebanese to play on the Lebanese National team. How is this any different!? Im getting sick of this. You know what I think. Yes, a lot of Kuwaitis are spoilt and have attitude but you know what, a lot of expats living in Kuwait arent any better and are becoming more and more insecure and paranoid. Dilated cardiomyopathy is myocardial disease characterized by dilatation and impaired contraction of the left ventricle or both left and right ventricle. The majority of these cases are secondary to coronary artery disease, hypertension and valvular cardiomyopathy. Patients diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy are further clinically evaluated for evidence of familial history of the disease. Those families have shown to have genetic predisposition to dilated cardiomyopathy; thus, currently there is no available single genetic test that allows comprehensive testing of all causative genes. We report a Kuwaiti case of dilated cardiomyopathy that was diagnosed at young age. The patient clinical presentation pointed out to the fact that this was a familial disease. This case is the first reported in Kuwait clinically presented with familial dilated cardiomyopathy implying a genetic susceptibility factor to be further investigated within the at-risk family members. 23-year-old Arab ethnicity Kuwaiti male with

Evidence of childhood obesity as a strong predictor of risk of non-commnuicable diseases has been accumulating world wide over the last three decades. The focus of this study was to provide a cross-sectional picture of the influence of the demographic and epidemiological transition on health habits, lifestyle changes, dietary patterns and obesity risk among 6-13 year old Kuwaiti school children. A sample of 1536 Kuwaiti school children was recruited in 2001 through a multi-stage cluster and stratified sampling technique to investigate the impact of these environmental factors. The study design included administration of a structured and pretested socio-demographic, health habits and lifestyle questionnaire. Of these a sub-sample of 224 ramdomly selected subjects( ,14% of total) (with a response rate of 86.6% n=194) undertook a 7-day dietary intake and physical activity record and anthropometric measurements. Some biochemical indices of nutritional risk were further assessed among 224 of eligible ...
From the early fifties, the economic upheaval created by the oil boom brought rapid changes in the traditional life style of the Kuwaiti people that resulted in a more sedentary lifestyle with high food availability and overnutrition. This led to an increase in overweight and obesity, which has become a major public health problem. A representative random sample of 324 adult Kuwaiti females aged 20-60 years were selected in a cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence of obesity, its characteristics, determinants, contributing factors, and relation to other co-morbidity. The sample was drawn from health centre registration files between May 1996 to October 1997. Data was collected by using: a semi-structured questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical analysis of blood samples. Thirty-nine percent of the participants were in the 30-39 year age group, 73% were married, and 56% were at the medium level of education. Al-Eisa et al. (2000) studied the polymorphism within intron 16 of the angiotensin-converting enzyme in 47 Kuwaiti children with different urological abnormalities leading to variable degrees of renal impairment and in 48 healthy control subjects with a similar ethnic background. Al-Eisa et al. suggested an association of the D allele of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene insertion/deletion polymorphism and congenital urological abnormalities, which result in parenchymal damage in Kuwaiti Arab children. In 2001, Al-Eisa et al. further investigated the association of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism with the clinical presentation of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in Kuwaiti children and found an association of the D-allele with the clinical manifestation of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in Kuwaiti Arab children. Later, Al-Eisa et al. (2001) compared ACE gene polymorhisms in 54 Kuwaiti Arab children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome with those in 48 healthy controls. The ...

Kuwait has just held its eleventh parliamentary election since independence in 1961. Though Kuwait is a monarchy, its parliamentary history has not been placid, and the election campaign reflected ongoing tensions between the royal family and segments of the electorate. Originally scheduled for October 2007, the election was brought forward to break a deadlock between the parliament and the government over the number of electoral districts in the country. Currently, there are 25 constituencies nationwide, but reformers have long argued that a smaller number - each with a larger number of voters - would be less susceptible to manipulation by the political elite. The 29 members of parliament who support a reduced number of constituencies were unable to agree with the government on a new number. As a result, the issue became the focus of a vigorous campaign by discontented Kuwaitis, who gathered in front of the National Assembly building and in universities to voice their criticisms. ...

Prevalence of overweight and obesity: Numerous studies were conducted to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Kuwaiti population. Al-Isa and Moussa (1998) studied the level of obesity among 7,419 Kuwaiti pre-school children aged 0-5 years. About 8% of this population was found to be obese, while about 4% were underweight. The Kuwaiti children were found to be heavier than their American counterparts, and heavier than a decade ago. Two years later, Al-Mousa and Parkash (2000) published highly valuable epidemiological data about overweight and obesity in 15,149 preschoolers, 10,130 six to nine-year-olds, 10,893 ten to thirteen-year-olds and 10,512 adolescents in Kuwait. Only in preschool children and adolescents obesity was higher in females and higher rates of overweight (and obesity) were observed in children aged (10-14) and (14-17).
