PY - 1988. Y1 - 1988. N2 - Eight patients who underwent upper sleeve lobectomy and six who underwent upper simple lobectomy for lung cancer were studied. The two groups were matched for age and preoperative lung function as assessed by standard spirometry. Post-operative lung function studies, including measurements of regional ventilation (V·r) and perfusion (Q·r) by 133 Xenon technique showed that: 1) two weeks after surgery, forced expiratory volume at 1 s was more reduced after simple than after sleeve lobectomy, but in both groups V·r and its vertical gradient were similarly reduced in the operated lung compared to the contralateral; 2) one year after sleeve lobectomy, the vertical gradient of V·r tended to disappear in both lungs while V·r and V·r/Q·r of the operated side increased ...

This invention relates generally to processes for the separation of noble gases and more specifically to processes for the separation of xenon from a gaseous mixture containing krypton. Fluorine is added to the mixture and the resulting mixture then irradiated with light of about 250-370 nm to form crystals of xenon difluoride. The unreacted gases are removed and the remaining crystals are decomposed, typically by thermal means, to yield xenon and fluorine gas. The xenon gas may be easily isolated by conventional means from the fluorine gas. Krypton may also be easily isolated from the remaining gases by conventional means. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of off gases from a nuclear reactor or reprocessing plant.*Patent applications

This paper discusses the spectral features of the amplification of narrow-band radiation of atomic nitrogen in the excimeric media of inert gases, including helium, argon, krypton, and xenon. Appreciable short-wavelength shifts (up to 0.026 nm) are detected in the spectra of the amplified radiation relative to the atomic emission lines of nitrogen that initiate this radiation. The observed shifts exceeded the instrumental resolution of the spectrometer that we used, were determined by the composition of the amplifying medium, and were independent of its excitation parameters under the experimental conditions. An explanation of the observed effect is proposed.. © 2012 OSA. PDF Article ...
abstractNote = {A critical analysis of the main theories of condensation, which are due to Zwanzig, Cabrera, Mc Caroll and Ehrlich, Wanlass, Armand, and Yu and Soo, is made. A condensation coefficient equal to unity is expected from these theories, except Armand and Yu and Soo, when the temperature of the gas impinging on its own solid phase is equal or less than 300 K. Using a resonating quartz microbalance the sensitivity of which is 10{sup -9} g. cm{sup 2} the experimental data agree with these theories when the temperature of the solid is less than 20 K. However the agreement must be interpreted for the more sophisticated theories of Armand and Yu and Soo. Regarding the sublimation of the rare gases one is faced with the theories of Salter, Eyring, Goodman and Armand. Within an order of magnitude the experimental data given here agree with the expected values. Moreover Armand theory is able to give the physical meaning of the observed results for argon sublimation from a krypton or a xenon ...

As an alternative to cryogenic gas handling, hyperpolarized (hp) gas mixtures were extracted directly from the spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) process through expansion followed by compression to ambient pressure for biomedical MRI applications. The omission of cryogenic gas separation generally requires the usage of high xenon or krypton concentrations at low SEOP gas pressures to generate hp 129Xe or hp 83Kr with sufficient MR signal intensity for imaging applications. Two different extraction schemes for the hp gasses were explored with focus on the preservation of the nuclear spin polarization. It was found that an extraction scheme based on an inflatable, pressure controlled balloon is sufficient for hp 129Xe handling, while 83Kr can efficiently be extracted through a single cycle piston pump. The extraction methods were tested for ex vivo MRI applications with excised rat lungs. Precise mixing of the hp gases with oxygen, which may be of interest for potential in vivo applications, ...
Recent research has shown amounts of krypton are enhanced relative to those of argon and helium in CO2 captured from a nitrate fertiliser plant in Brazil. This enrichment is due to the greater solubility of the heavier noble gases, so they are more readily dissolved into the solvent used for capture. This fingerprint has been shown to act as an effective means of tracking CO2 injected into Brazilian and USA oil fields to increase oil production. Similar enrichments in heavy noble gases, along with high helium concentrations are well documented in coals, coal-bed methane and in organic rich oil and gas source rocks. As noble gases are unreactive, these enrichments will not be affected by burning the gas or coal in a power station and hence will be passed onto the flue gases. Samples of CO2 obtained from an oxyfuel pilot CO2 capture plant at Lacq in France which contain helium and krypton enrichments well above atmospheric values confirm this ...
A method has been described for the estimation, by means of krypton-85, of the rate of nutrient blood flow to the retina of anesthetized animals. The isotope was injected into the carotid artery, and a multiexponential decay curve was obtained by transscleral monitoring with a small Geiger-Müller tube. Under the conditions of the experiment the average total retinal blood flow (in the choriocapillaris and the retinal vessels of the cat) was 510 ml. per 100 Gm. per minute. Evidence has been presented which indicates that the rate of flow of blood in the choriocapillaris was 1,200 ml. per 100 Gm. per minute, and that the flow of blood in the retinal vessels was 166 ml. per 100 Gm. per minute. Approximately 73 per cent of the radioactivity was distributed initially to the choriocapillaris and 22 per cent to the retinal vessels. ...

We have developed an atom trap trace analysis (ATTA) system to measure Kr in Xe at the part per trillion (ppt) level, a prerequisite for the sensitivity achievable with liquid xenon dark matter detectors beyond the current generation. Since Ar and Kr have similar laser cooling wavelengths, the apparatus has been tested with Ar to avoid contamination prior to measuring Xe samples. A radio-frequency plasma discharge generates a beam of metastable atoms which is optically collimated, slowed, and trapped using standard magneto-optical techniques. Based on the measured overall system efficiency of 1.2 × 10{sup −8} (detection mode), we expect the ATTA system to reach the design goal sensitivity to ppt concentrations of Kr in Xe in ,2 h. ...

The Phantom Zone was a pocket universe discovered by Jor-El that existed outside the space-time continuum; used on the planet Krypton as a humane method of imprisoning criminals. Previously, criminals were punished by being sealed into capsules and rocketed into orbit in suspended animation with crystals attached to their foreheads to slowly erase their criminal tendencies; Klax-Ar was one criminal who received this punishment but escaped. Gra-Mo was the last to suffer the punishment, for it was then abolished in favor of the Zone. The inmates of the Phantom Zone reside in a ghost-like state of existence from which they can observe, but cannot interact with, the regular universe. Inmates do not age or require sustenance in the Phantom Zone; furthermore, they are telepathic and mutually insubstantial. As such, they were able to survive the destruction of Krypton and focus their attention on Earth, as most of the surviving Kryptonians now reside there. Most have a particular grudge against ...

Understanding the links between climate change and human migration and culture is an important theme in Quaternary archaeology. While oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes in high-latitude ice cores provide the ultimate detailed record of palaeoclimate extending back to the Middle Pleistocene, groundwater can act as a climate archive for areas at lower latitudes, permitting a degree of calibration for proxy records such as lake sediments, bones, and organic matter. Not only can oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes be measured on waters, but the temperature of recharge can be calculated from the amount of the atmospheric noble gases neon, argon, krypton, and xenon in solution, while residence time can be estimated from the decay of the radioisotopes carbon-14, chlorine-36, and krypton-81 over timescales comparable to the ice core record. The Pleistocene-Holocene transition is well characterised in aquifers worldwide, and it is apparent that isotope-temperature relationships of the present day are ...
Although many variations exist, a plasma lamp is usually a clear glass sphere filled with a mixture of various gases (most commonly neon, sometimes with other noble gases such as argon, xenon and krypton) at nearly atmospheric pressure. They are driven by high-frequency (approximately 35 kHz) alternating current at 2-5 kV.[1] The drive circuit is essentially a specialized power inverter, in which current from a lower-voltage DC supply powers a high-frequency electronic oscillator circuit whose output is stepped up by a high-frequency, high-voltage transformer. The radio-frequency energy from the transformer is transmitted into the gas within the globe through an electrode at its center. A much smaller hollow glass orb can also serve as an electrode when it is filled with metal wool or a conducting fluid that is in communication with the transformer output. In this case, the radio-frequency energy is admitted into the larger space by capacitive coupling right through the glass. Plasma filaments ...
摘要:Transformer breathing system is an important auxiliary equipment of the transformer. However, in the daily operation process, due to the accidental airway blockage and other accidents, the transformer will be injected and the trip will stop running. Therefore, the transformer respiratory system needs to be the key in operation and maintenance management. One of the links of concern. Based on the practical application of actual substation on-site operation and maintenance management, this paper designs a maintenance-free transformer breathing system and applies the Internet of Things technology to monitor the respiratory system online, improving the ability to grasp the state of the respiratory system and further improving the safety of the substation. Reduce the workload of inspections and reduce the operation and maintenance costs of substations.更多还原 ...
Calcium imaging was done in the Vanderbilt University Cell Imaging Resource. A laser scanning confocal microscope (Zeiss LSM410, Seiles Instruments, St. Louis, MO), with diffraction-limited focusing of a laser beam, coupled with a special filter placed confocal to the sample, provides rejection of the out-of-focus background that is a thousand times better than a conventional microscope. The system is equipped with an argon - krypton laser for excitation. Neurons in dissociated monolayer cultures were loaded with fluo-3-AM (Molecular Probes, Eugene, OR) 40 min before the study. Culture dishes, 35 mm with glass bottoms for transmission of laser beams (MatTek, Ashland, MA), were placed in a microincubation system (Medical Systems Corp., Greenvale, NY) on the stage of the confocal microscope. The microincubation system allowed precise control of media temperature and was able to change the media temperature from 21 [degree sign]C to 37 [degree sign]C, and (in conjunction with superfusion) back to ...
The Lymphstar Pro emits energetic information to the body via harmonics of sound and frequencies of light to the energy field of the cell. The instrument produces this information through the vehicle of noble gas ionization. producing a plasma field. There exists a long tradition of research in the energetic effects of these noble gases. A mixture of xenon, argon, and krypton gases enclosed in glass is used for optimal results. The gases are electrically excited which then cause an energy field, or plasma, to emit from the glass tube onto the skin. Next, critical to an effective instrument is the complexity of the circuit that generates the waves, or frequency patterns, of the information. The Lymphstar Pro has an optimal circuit design for this purpose. The result of this combination of energetic technologies is the breaking up of blockages through the re-polarization of proteins throughout the body. When the polarity of the blockages is reversed, the material slowly erodes and safely ...
