To study the complex interaction between growth and reproduction we have established lines of transgenic common carp (Cyprinus carpio) carrying a grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) growth hormone (GH) transgene. The GH-transgenic fish showed delayed gonadal development compared with non-transgenic common carp. To gain a better understanding of the phenomenon, we studied body growth, gonad development, changes of reproduction related genes and hormones of GH-transgenic common carp for 2 years. Over-expression of GH elevated peripheral gh transcription, serum GH levels, and inhibited endogenous GH expression in the pituitary. Hormone analyses indicated that GH-transgenic common carp had reduced pituitary and serum level of luteinizing hormone (LH). Deoxynivalenol (DON) frequently contaminates animal feed, including fish feed used in aquaculture. This study intends to further investigate the effects of DON on carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) at concentrations representative for commercial fish feeds. Experimental feeding with 352, 619 or 953 μg DON kg−1 feed resulted in unaltered growth performance of fish during six weeks of experimentation, but increased lipid peroxidation was observed in liver, head kidney and spleen after feeding of fish with the highest DON concentration. These effects of DON were mostly reversible by two weeks of feeding the uncontaminated control diet. Histopathological scoring revealed increased liver damage in DON-treated fish, which persisted even after the recovery phase. Trypanosomatids of the order Kinetoplastida are major contributors to global disease and morbidity, and understanding their basic biology coupled with the development of new drug targets represents a critical need. Additionally, trypanosomes are among the more accessible divergent eukaryote experimental systems. The genome of Trypanosoma brucei contains 8,131 predicted open reading frames (ORFs), of which over half have no known homologues beyond the Kinetoplastida and a substantial number of others are poorly defined by in silico analysis. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) is one of the major aquaculture species, contributing nearly 35% to the inland fish production in Karnataka, India. Stocks collected from Hungary (2), Indonesia and Vietnam were assessed alongside two local stocks in a series of culture performance trials with the objective of setting up a base population for developing a breeding programme. The present study deals with the genetic divergence and polymorphism in these six stocks using random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total of 180 decamer random primers were screened for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification (OPA 1-20, OPB1-20, OPC1-20, OPD1-20, OPE1-20, OPF1-20, OPG1-20, OPP1-20 and OPM1-20). However, knowledge on mucus SI turnover rates of individual fish remains limited, including uncertainty over how they are influenced by fish body sizes. Here, a diet switch experiment predicted mucus SI turnover rates (δ13C and δ15N) as a function of time using samples taken over 200 days from 10 individually tagged common carp Cyprinus carpio covering two size groups. Non-linear mixed effects models revealed rapid turnover of both δ13C and δ15N (T50: 2-5 days; T95: 9-22 days); δ15N turnover rates were slower for the larger cohort, while δ13C turnover rates were independent of body size.
