Disease threat currently low in Kansas corn fields | KRVN Radio
MANHATTAN, Kan. - A Kansas State University row crop specialist says hes happy - even if surprised - by the low incidence of disease hes finding in the states corn fields so far this summer.. But hes urging growers to continue scouting their fields for diseases that have been commonly found in Kansas in past years.. I have been surprised by the low levels of gray leaf spot in most fields, said Doug Jardine, who has traveled several areas of Kansas over the past few weeks looking at corn and soybean fields.. In those areas where I was able to find gray leaf spot, it was on the very lowest leaves, even in some fields that I know have had a problem with a history of this disease.. Gray leaf spot is a fungus that causes an estimated loss of 9 million bushels of corn per year in Kansas. It was first found in the state in 1989, and is considered the most serious foliar disease of corn in Kansas and the north central United States.. For that reason, indications that it might not be as prevalent ...

Kansas Supreme Court Decision Creating Right to Abortion Shows Why State Constitutions Matter | LifeNews.com
As discussed in my recent article Pro-Choice Doesnt Have to Mean Pro-Roe, the overturning of Roe v. Wade would allow all states to make their own abortion restrictions. Because of this decision from the Kansas Supreme Court, the state of Kansas would not be able to pass any additional abortion restrictions even if Roe was overturned, as the Kansas Supreme Courts decision is binding within the state. Now, if Kansans want to nullify the courts decision, they will need to pass an amendment to the Kansas Constitution protecting the right to life for unborn children.. Each state has different criteria for ratifying a new amendment to its state constitution. The process for amending the Kansas Constitution is very similar to that of the United States Constitution, as it requires two-thirds of both houses of the legislature to vote in favor of an amendment for it to be passed for ratification.. The Kansas Supreme Courts decision serves as a helpful reminder that local politics can be more important ...

Occurrence of phosphorus, other nutrients, and triazine herbicides in water from the Hillsdale Lake basin, Northeast Kansas,...
An investigation of the occurrence of phosporus, other nutrients, and triazine herbicides in water samples from the Hillsdale Lake Basin in northeast Kansas was conducted from May 1994 through May 1995. Point-source and nonpoint-source contributions of these water-quality constituents were estimated by conducting synoptic sampling at 48 sites in the basin during five periods of low- flow conditions. Samples were collected for the determination of nutrients, including total phosphorus as phosphorus, dissolved orthophosphate as phosphorus, total nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen, and total ammonia plus organic nitrogen as nitrogen, and for selected triazine herbicides. On the basis of criteria developed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Hillsdale Water-Quality Protection Project established a goal to maintain water quality in the tributaries of the Hillsdale Lake Basin at a mean annual low-flow total phosphorus concentration...

Vol 2, No 4 - Turtles in Kansas - The Kansas School Naturalist | Emporia State University
Turtles are reptiles - a group of animals that includes snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and alligators - which have remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. The turtle has witnessed the passing parade of life; the rise and extinction of great groups of fearsome animals - the dinosaurs, the mastodon, the saber-toothed tiger - and today, as in the past, he still plods or swims along, carrying his house upon his back.. This house of tough bone and shell is important to the turtle, for it protects him from many enemies that would otherwise find him a tasty mouthful. Some turtles can withdraw completely into their shells, closing the lower shell against the upper and thus forming a protective box. We are familiar with a turtle of this type in Kansas, which is usually called the box turtle or dry land turtle. Some turtles, though, have a smaller shell into which they cannot withdraw. This handicap is often offset by the possession of fierce jaws and a mean disposition.. Where do turtles ...
Kansas School Bans Handing Out Bibles After Anti-Religion Group Threatens Lawsuit - The Libertarian Republic
Casey Harper A Kansas public school district has said it will no longer allow the Gideons to distribute Bibles after an anti-religion group threatened to sue.. The dispute started Nov. 4 when the Gideons continued their annual tradition of visiting Seitz Elementary School in Fort Riley, Kansas, and left Bibles on a table in the hallway where students could pick them up. The parents of a 9-year-old fourth grade girl reached out to the atheist American Humanist Association, that then threatened to take legal action on the school district if it did not immediately agree to stop allowing the Bible distribution.. The Bible distribution made the student feel extremely uncomfortable; she also felt that the school was pushing religion on her, the AHA, which says the 9 year-old is an atheist, said in the complaint letter.. The AHA said facilitating Bible distribution violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The AHA sent the threat Nov. 10, and, in return, Geary County School District ...

September | 2017 | Kansas Humanities Council
The canal was finished in 1888, but a mere four years after its construction the project became known as Soules Folly. The Arkansas River, the canals source, flowed irregularly, and nowhere near the predicted levels of water came through the canal. Add to that unusually porous soil, and the canal was dry more often than wet; the promised Eden of Southwest Kansas growing never came to fruition.. The westward movement of settlers into Colorado and their use of the Arkansas River proved to be another reason the canal never filled. These Colorado farmers built their own canals upstream, diverting enough water to decrease the flow of the Arkansas into Kansas. A conflict erupted between the two states resulting in a decades-long legal fracas that saw United States Supreme Court decisions in 1902, 1907, 1943, 1985, 1995, 2001, and 2009. Even today, people in Dodge City claim that Colorado uses too much water from the Arkansas. Its easy to understand why. Most days, the Arkansas River through Dodge ...
May | 2012 | Kansas Humanities Council
In 1971, at the invitation of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a committee of five Kansans established the Kansas Committee for the Humanities to foster appreciation of the humanities among the out-of-school adult public and to relate the humanities to issues of public policy. In 1972, the Committee hired Marion Cott as executive director, received its first NEH award of $125,000, and approved 14 grants over a 12-month period. Forty years, a name change, and a change in directions later, the Kansas Humanities Councils commitment to engaging Kansans with the humanities is still going strong.. IOM Offers Definitions for Chronic Multisymptom Illness/Gulf War Illness to Guide VA Treatment & Research
The committee recommended that the VA use two current definitions -- the CDC and Kansas definitions -- because they capture the most common symptoms and will provide a framework for further treatment and research. The CDC case definition, which has been widely used by researchers, identifies 29 percent to 60 percent of U.S. Gulf War-deployed veterans as CMI cases, depending on the population studied. The Kansas definition identifies 34 percent as CMI cases in the Kansas Gulf War veterans studied. The committee stressed that one definition should not be applied for all purposes, and instead researchers and clinicians should select one based on their needs. The CDC definition is broad and has the greatest concordance with all the other definitions but is less restrictive than the Kansas definition. For example, the CDC definition is effective for identifying as many individuals as possible. It will likely include individuals who do not have CMI, whereas the Kansas definition will likely exclude ...

Sorghum as Dry Land Feedstock for Fuel Ethanol Production - 中国期刊全文数据库
Author】 WANG Donghai1, and WU Xiaorong2 1 Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, USA 2 Postdoctoral Research Associate, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, USA. 【摘要】 Dry land crops such as sorghums (grain sorghum, sweet sorghum and forage sorghum) have been identified as promising feedstocks for fuel ethanol production. The major issue for using the sweet sorghum as feedstock is its stability at room temperature. At room temperature, the sweet sorghum juice could lose from 40% to 50% of its fermentable sugars from 7 to 14 days. No significant sugar content and profile changes were observed in juice stored at refrigerator temperature in two weeks. Ethanol fermentation efficiencies of fresh and frozen juice were high (~93%). Concentrated juice (≥25% sugar) had significantly lower efficiencies and large amounts of fructose left in finished beer; however, winery yeast strains and novel ...

Tonys Kansas City: TKC MUST READ!!! MORE CHARGES AGAINST FORMER KANSAS CITY PRIEST!!!
People need to realize that Priests CANNOT ever be an intermediator between you and God (or Jesus). Its not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, Jesus never spoke of the arrangement, plus the Bible says God does not hear the prayers of the wicked), and how many wicked priests are there? Plus there is no purgatory. There is no power in Mary, a Jewish woman who died 700 years before the Catholic Church was formed by Constantine. Confession booth sins are NOT forgiven as you didnt ask God for forgiveness - you ask a unauthorized stand-in for God (a priest). Ignorance is NO excuse on judgement day. You have had plenty of time to verify what I have mentioned above by reading the Bible. If you check your mind in at the door of the Catholic Church and believe everything it teaches, never seeking God thru the Bible, you are guilty of NOT being a follower of God. You are however a follower of a false religion God does not honor and will punish. I mean really: limbo, purgatory, celibacy, Power in Mary, ...

The Kansas City Star
A $50 million, very green apartment development is in the works for the River Market, the final chapter in transforming what was once a gritty railroad yard into a new neighborhood. Developer Jonathan Arnold is planning an approximately 300-unit development called Second and Delaware that promises the latest in energy efficiency while allowing residents to get their hands dirty working their rooftop gardens. We want to make it affordable for downtown workers and students up to empty-nesters from Johnson County who want a great view of the river and downtown, Arnold said.. The development, which is now before the City Plan Commission, would restore the historic street grid of the River Market, the area where Kansas City was born, by reconnecting Second Street with Wyandotte Street.. Its also being built to last.. As opposed to many new apartment projects these days, the structural frame of the four- and seven-story buildings comprising Second and Delaware will use concrete, not wood.. The ...

Bells Palsy - North Kansas City Hospital, Kansas City, MO
Most people who have Bells palsy recover completely, without treatment, in 1 to 2 months.footnote 1 This is especially true for people who can still partly move their facial muscles. But a small number of people may have permanent muscle weakness or other problems on the affected side of the face. Treatment with corticosteroid medicines (such as prednisone) can make it more likely that you will regain all facial movement. They work best if they are taken soon after symptoms start (within 3 days). Sometimes antiviral medicines (such as acyclovir) may be added to corticosteroid medicines to treat Bells palsy. But evidence for using antiviral medicines is weak. They may help in some cases, but in general they do not affect recovery.footnote 2. Some people may not be able to take corticosteroid medicines because of other health problems. Its important to remember that most people with Bells palsy recover completely without any treatment. ...
Breed of the Week - Cocker Spaniel- Kansas City Dog Photography ~ FixYourImages Photography - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography...
Origin: Despite their small size, the Cocker Spaniel is still an active Sporting breed that needs daily exercise. Regular brushing and a trim every few months helps keep the coat free of mats. Cockers are intelligent, gentle dogs that thrive as part of a family. The Cocker Spaniel dates back as far as the 14th century. The breed originated from the English Cocker Spaniels, which were brought to the United States. The Spaniels were bred down in size and given the name American Cocker Spaniels, officially called simply the Cocker Spaniel by the AKC. The American Cocker Spaniel is more popular than the original English Cocker Spaniel, who are slightly different in appearance, with longer muzzles and larger bodies. The Cocker Spaniel is a hunting-gun dog able to work in difficult terrain in both wet and dry land. Excellent at flushing and retrieving game with a gentle mouth. They listen to commands well. The name Cocker comes from the woodcock, a game bird the dogs were known for flushing. Some ...
