Public Health News is a British weekly print and online journal distributed free of charge to British public health professionals, with a circulation of over 14,000. A collaborative project of such eminent professional organizations as the Royal Institute of Public Health, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, the Faculty of Public Health, and others, it provides news and features on the latest issues in this medically-related field. It is puzzling and disturbing that such a publication would turn not to a health professional but to an anti-Israel activist for an article on health issues in the West Bank and Gaza. The author, Sarah Irving, is part of the notorious International Solidarity Movement, a group that justifies terrorism and supports armed struggle against Israel.

I want to be very clear that I have not read the new study, so I do not dispute the results, and that may be possible that the drug company exerted no influence whatsoever over the study. I thought, though, that this was a good opportunity to point out that considering who is sponsoring or promoting research results can be important to consider, particularly if you get your health news from online news/magazines that may not provide full details. The published research articles may also provide details about side effects or negative results that are important to understand. If other studies sponsored by the drug company were done that did not show the reported benefits, have those results also been published? Have any other researchers been able to verify the work? Does the study measure what it claims to measure ...

THURSDAY, Dec. 29, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- When news reports first began to emerge of mysterious, severe birth defects in Brazilian newborns, few could have imagined these isolated tragedies would explode into the leading health news story of 2016: the Zika virus.. Soon, those few Brazilian cases of microcephaly -- babies born with abnormally small heads and underdeveloped brains -- grew to become thousands. Doctors quickly made the link between maternal infection with mosquito-borne Zika in pregnancy, and infant microcephaly and other neurological issues.. In the United States, officials at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) went on high alert as the summer mosquito season advanced. Cases of infection in the Miami area and the Texas-Mexico border led to travel alerts for pregnant women, along with advice for warding off mosquito bites.. By autumn, the Zika panic had begun to subside -- the CDC lifted its Miami advisory although another for Brownsville, Texas, remains. ...

People who consent to participate RCTs are willing to be randomly allocated to new or existing treatments. While RCTs are considered the gold standard for comparing the effects of one treatment to another, the gradual progress they yield can seem frustratingly slow - particularly for patients with poor standard treatment options.. Yet, the genuine uncertainty associated with individual RCTs has been vital to the gains in therapeutics, said Dr. Djulbegovic, professor of medicine and oncology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Moffitt Cancer Center. If there was significant likelihood that one treatment in a comparison was better than the other, it would be unethical to deny some patients the superior treatment, and well-informed patients would probably refuse to participate in the study, he said.. Incremental advances in treatment generated by RCTs over time - such as childhood leukemia cure rates moving from zero to 80 percent even though only 2 to 5 percent of new treatments ...

h2,Peanuts Battle Diabetes Type 2,/h2,. Given that the salted peanut is the no. 1 most popular nut snack for Americans, it is always good to learn about additional health benefits it offers. A recent report in the Health News Digest taken from a Diabetes Care issue, has found that by consuming two ounces of nuts (like peanuts) instead of another carbohydrate on a daily basis, blood glucose control and blood lipids can be improved for people who suffer from Type 2 diabetes.. Indeed, according to one expert, David Jenkins, MD, PhD, DSc, "nuts, including peanuts, can make a valuable contribution to the diabetic diet by displacing high glycemic index carbohydrates and replacing them with vegetable fats and vegetable proteins which have been shown in the long term to be associated with better cardiovascular health and diabetes prevention.". ,h2,Protein-Packed Peanuts,/h2,. Rachels Democracy & Health News (formerly Rachels Environment & Health News) highlights the connections between issues that are often considered separately or not at all. The natural world is deteriorating and human health is declining because those who make the important decisions arent the ones who bear the brunt. Our purpose is to connect the dots between human health, the destruction of nature, the decline of community, the rise of economic insecurity and inequalities, growing stress among workers and families, and the crippling legacies of patriarchy, intolerance, and racial injustice that allow us to be divided and therefore ruled by the few. In a democracy, there are no more fundamental questions than, "Who gets to decide?" And, "How do the few control the many, and what might be done about it?" As you come across stories that might help people connect the dots, please Email them to us at [email protected] Rachels Democracy & Health News is published as often as necessary to provide ...
Press releases blamed for exaggerated health news. WEDNESDAY, Dec. 10, 2014 (HealthDay News) - Exaggerated news reports about health research often can be traced back to press releases issued by universities, a new British study suggests.. Improving the accuracy of these news releases could greatly reduce the amount of misleading health news, the researchers said in their Dec. 9 report in the BMJ.. The blame "lies mainly with the increasing culture of university competition and self-promotion, interacting with the increasing pressures on journalists to do more with less time," Petroc Sumner and Chris Chambers, both of Cardiff University in Wales, wrote in a journal news release.. They analyzed 462 news releases on health-related research issued by 20 leading universities in the United Kingdom in 2011 and compared them to the studies they described and to 668 national news stories about the studies.. Compared to the actual studies, 40 percent of the releases contained exaggerated advice, ...

The red-wine chemical resveratrol has the potential to fight diabetes, cancer, heart disease and dementia, according to a flurry of studies in the past decade. MONDAY, Aug. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Obese women are as likely as normal-weight women to get pregnant when using donor eggs during in vitro fertilization (IVF), according to a new study.. The findings appeared online recently in the journal Human Reproduction.. Previous research has shown that obesity is associated with a lower likelihood of becoming pregnant using IVF, but most of that work was limited to women using their own eggs. Studies that looked at results for obese women using donor eggs during IVF have yielded mixed findings, according to a journal news release.. In this new study, researchers analyzed data from more than 4,700 women who took part in previous research. Along with having similar pregnancy rates as normal-weight women, obese women who used donor eggs during IVF had similar rates of live birth and miscarriage.. "Our study suggests that obesity does not significantly affect whether a woman will become pregnant with donor eggs," study first author Dr. Emily Jungheim, an ...

An exciting new drug, fondaparinux, significantly reduced the incidence of blood clots released from thrombophlebitis in the legs. The drug is given by self-injection for up to 45 days. The cost of the treatment for one patient is up to $7380. You have to treat 88 patients at a total cost of as much as $650,000 to prevent one clot. And no lives were saved. Because the study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the chances are that this drug will be very popular indeed. Dr. Lee Goldman of Columbia University and Dr. Jeffrey Ginsberg of McMaster University wrote a commentary in the same journal calling for cost to be a consideration in the FDA approval of drugs. I couldnt agree more, but that would require sanity and common sense ...

Buck Institute faculty leads study showing genetic fingerprint becoming younger in healthy seniors who did resistance training__Not only does exercise make most people feel better and perform physical tasks better, it now appears that exercise - specifically, resistance training -- actually rejuvenates muscle tissue in healthy senior citizens.__A recent study, co-led by Buck Institute faculty member Simon Melov, PhD, and Mark Tarnopolsky, MD, PhD, of McMaster University Medical Center in Hamilton, Ontario, involved before and after analysis of gene expression profiles in tissue samples taken from 25 healthy older men and women who underwent six months of twice weekly resistance training, compared to a similar analysis of tissue samples taken from younger healthy men and women. The results of the study appear in the May 23 edition of the on-line, open access journal PLoS One.__The gene expression profiles involved age-specific mitochondrial function; mitochondria act as the "powerhouse" of ...
Twenty years of research into the use of stem cells to generate human blood has led to the potential for "limitless" blood supplies by turning adult cells into stem cells, which can in turn create any type of blood cell, researchers claim. This could reduce the risk of shortages for people with poor immune systems, genetic blood disorders or rare blood types.. The blood was tested by using so-called humanised mice, which are mice carrying functioning human organs used for biological research, and allows for more rigorous research than using human test subjects. A similar but separate research team succeeded in turning adult mouse cells into mouse blood stem cells, which were then proven to boost the immune blood cell count of the mouse they were given to.. Both studies, described in the journal Nature, suggest a future twenty years in the making where blood shortages will be a thing of the past, although it should be said while this is a major breakthrough, the research isnt complete yet, and ...
THURSDAY, Oct. 31 (HealthDay News) -- The more that adults talk to toddlers, the more quickly the childrens language skills develop, according to a small new study.. The study included 29 children, 19 months old, from low-income Hispanic families. Each child was fitted with a small audio recorder that captured all the sounds he or she heard during the day in their homes.. The recordings were analyzed to distinguish between adult speech directed at the toddlers and speech they only overheard, such as when a parent or other caregiver was on the phone or talking with another adult.. The researchers found large differences between families in the amount of child-directed speech that toddlers heard from adults. One child heard more than 12,000 words of child-directed speech in a day, while another heard only 670, according to the study released online recently in the journal Psychological Science. "Thats just 67 words per hour, less speech than youd hear in a 30-second commercial," study co-author ...
