Jobs, grants, prestige and career advancement are all partially based on an admittedly flawed concept: the journal Impact Factor. Impact factors have been becoming increasingly meaningless since 1991, writes George Lozano, who finds that the variance of papers citation rates around their journals IF has been rising steadily. Thomson Reuters assigns most journals a yearly Impact Factor (IF), which is defined as the mean citation rate during that year of the papers published in that journal during the previous 2 years. The IF has been repeatedly criticized for many well-known and openly acknowledged reasons. However, editors continue to try to increase their journals IFs, and researchers continue to try to publish their work in the journals with the highest IF, which creates the perception of a mutually-reinforcing measure of quality. More disturbingly, although it is easy enough to measure the citation rate of any individual author, a journals IF is often extended to indirectly assess ...
We are pleased to report the continued increase of the Impact Factors of MDPI journals in 2009 (see Table 1 and Figure 1). As noted in a similar Editorial published in June 2009, the Impact Factors of MDPI journals have been steadily recovering since the inception of the full Open Access publishing policy in early 2007 [1]. We are pleased to see that all journals now have an Impact Factor much higher than 1. In 2011 the Journal Citation Report (JCR) will include the first official Impact Factor of Entropy , and in 2012, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health will be included for the first time. Nevertheless, we are already able to compute a preliminary impact factor of approximately 1.4 for Entropy [2]. [...]
... Theoretical and experimental information is presented on impact factors for the fatigue design of steel highway bridges. Theoretical studies suggest that the impact factors for individual trucks in actual traffic should generally be less than 0.25, but that much higher factors would occur occasionally due to unusual conditions, such as a bump at a critical location. Measurement of impact factors in actual steel bridges confirms these theoretical conclusions. Impact factors approaching 100 percent have been reported in studies aimed at determining peak impact factors for nonfatigue design. However, impact factors determined for individual trucks in traffic, or for test trucks, are generally much lower. This suggests that the impact factors given by the present American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) formula are representative of actual bridge loading and, therefore, are generally appropriate for fatigue design, which should be

The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a scientometric factor based on the yearly average number of citations on articles published by a particular journal in the last two years. In other words, the impact factor of 2020 is the average of the number of cited publications divided by the citable publications of a journal. A journal impact factor is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field. Normally, journals with higher impact factors are often deemed to have more influence than those with lower ones. However, the science community has also noted that review articles typically are more citable than research articles. (Read More: What is a good impact factor?). ...

Impact factor and its role in academic promotion Richard Russell,1 Dave Singh21Wrexham Park Hospital, Berkshire, UK; 2Northwest Lung Research Centre, South Manchester University Hospitals Trust, Manchester, UKThis statement was adopted unanimously at the May 17, 2009 meeting of the International Respiratory Journal Editors Roundtable. In our collective experience as editors of international peer-reviewed journals, we propose that the impact factor calculated for individual journals should not be used as a basis for evaluating the significance of an individual scientist’s past performance or scientific potential. There are several reasons not to equate the impact factor of a journal in which the scientist publishes with the quality of the scientist’s research.

The editors accepted the study when we explained to them the scenario - they even praised it." Much to Rosys delight, this paper ended up being one of her most cited. This experience taught her that there is hope beyond impact factors. "Its not only the impact factor that scientists look for, the information in the papers also matters. I advise my students to trust the quality of work over impact factors. Only if people read papers, appreciate and cite, will the journals impact factor increase.". During her PhD days, Rosy suffered a mishap that set her back considerably: Her laptop was stolen from the window of her ground floor room. Losing painstakingly collected data can be lethal for a research student already data-starved. Rosy had no back-up as she could not afford a hard disk at the time. By Michael TaylorKUALA LUMPUR (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Worshippers in Indonesia, the worlds largest Muslim-majority country, are set to go green with a new initiative that aims to establish 1,000 eco-mosques by 2020.Launched this week by Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, the initiative will help the mosques to source renewable energy, manage their water and food needs sustainably, reduce and recycle waste and provide environmental education. The project will see the top Muslim clerical body work with the private sector, the governments health and planning ministries, universities, and other religious groups in a bid to boost environmental awareness in communities across the country. Most Muslims in Indonesia listen more to religious leaders than the government, Hayu Prabowo, head of environment and natural resources at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. If an Islamic leader says something they will follow but if the government says something, they may
By Karla MendesRIO DE JANIERO (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The opening ceremony of Brazils World Cup in 2014 also marked the kickoff of a campaign by teenager Werá Jeguaka Mirim to fight for indigenous land rights through his rap songs. He had been selected, with three other children, to free a peace dove at the ceremony, but in an unsanctioned move, Werá also held up a red-and-black poster reading Demarcation Now!. The poster was hidden in his underwear, the suggestion of indigenous leaders from his Krukutu community of some 300 indigenous people in Brazils biggest city, Sao Paulo. After this I started to see that the indigenous fight (for land demarcation) is very important. This act made me become a real activist, the 16-year-old told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.Werá, who had already written indigenous tales and poetry, started to compose rap songs just a few months after the opening ceremony and rebranded himself as Kunumi MC, the first solo indigenous rapper in the country. These songs

Normally opposition comes at the discussion stage, you dont prevent a bill being introduced by a private member, its uncollegial if nothing else, Tharoor told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an interview. But they did that and they succeeded, partly because prejudice sadly is still there in our society.Seventy four

OVERVIEW: The real merit of research is in its specific, substantive content. But if a contribution proves important and useful, it will be taken up, built upon and cited in subsequent research. Scientometrics attempts to estimate and quantify this research uptake and impact. The classical metric of research productivity had been publication counts ("publish or perish") and the prestige of their publication venues (refereed journals or scholarly monographs), based on their prior track records for quality and importance. Publication counts were soon supplemented by "journal impact factors" (average citation counts), and eventually also by individual article and author citation counts. In the online era, the potential metrics have extended further to include download counts, growth and decay rates for metrics, co-citation measures, and more elaborate a-priori formulas such as the "h-index" and its variants. Still prominently missing today, however, are three things: (1) book metrics, (2) a ...

Added to this toxic mixture is the impact factor (IF). Just as many clinicians claim that contacts by pharmaceutical company representatives do not affect their prescribing behaviour, so editors are likely to deny that thoughts of a rising IF might influence their acceptance rates. In their paper published this week in PLoS Medicine, Andreas Lundh and colleagues analysed randomised controlled trials published in six high-impact general medical journals during two time periods a decade apart; they calculated the putative fall in IF that would have occurred had publication been denied to papers that were commercially sponsored [1].. Unsurprisingly, they found the expected association, since IF depends in turn on recent citation rates, and a body of literature shows that industry-sponsored trials attract more citations than those funded by a nonprofit source [2],[3]. There are reasons: for example, randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses are cited more frequently than clinical studies with ...

Standalone literature reviews are fundamental in every scientific discipline. Their value is reflected by a profound scientific impact in terms of citations. Although previous empirical research has shown that this impact has a large variance, it is largely unknown which specific factors influence the impact of literature reviews. Against this background, the purpose of our study is to shed light on the driving factors that make a difference in the scientific impact of literature reviews. Our analysis of an exhaustive set of 214 IS literature reviews reveals that factors on the author level (e.g., expertise, collaboration, and conceptual feedback) and on the article level (e.g., methodological rigor) are significant and robust predictors of scientific impact over and above journal level factors. These insights enhance our understanding of what distinguishes highly cited literature reviews. In so doing, our study informs future guidelines on literature reviews and provides insights for prospective
Do all clinical research publications show strong application of ethics principles and respect for biomedical law? We examined, for the year 2009, the ethics requirements displayed on the website of 30 leading medical journals with an impact factor (IF) ,10, and 30 others with an IF ,10. We carried out a short study looking at the relationship between the IF of a journal and the ethics requirements in its instructions to authors. We show that the IF of a biomedical journal bears a direct relationship to its ethics requirements. ABSTRACT: In this report, we summarize a journal count from articles published in the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research (Psi Chi Journal) for the 5-year period, 1998-2002 to determine (a) the types of journals cited, and (b) the citation frequency of the Psi Chi Journal itself. Findings show a total of 1188 reference citations, with over 72% journal articles. APA journals comprised 40% of the 10 most frequently cited journals, and 30% of the 30 most frequently cited journals. The high citation frequency of APA journals, considered among the most sophisticated professional publications available, is a credit to undergraduate researchers published in the Psi Chi Journal. For the Psi Chi Journal, however, we counted a total of only 5 citations. We discuss reasons for this low rate, but the small number of Psi Chi Journal citations is disappointing because one purpose of the Journal is to stimulate ideas for further research.. Academic "productivity" typically only refers to research and refereed publication activities, not to teaching or outreach. As a simple quantitative measure (i.e., numeric count) of artifacts, including books, chapters, articles, presentations, grants, etc., productivity is the traditional method of evaluating academic output (Leahey 2007; Adkins and Budd 2006). There are few reliable metrics for productive teaching or outreach other than the output or count of activities - like student credit hours, contact hours, or listing internal or external committee/board memberships (Massy 2010). Productivity is easily derived from a CV by simply counting each of the artifacts or activities listed. In some cases, the number of journal article citations (and more recently this has included books and book chapters) and journal impact factors (JIF) to convey the weight, importance, or recognition of the work are included within CVs. However, these metrics only apply to published materials that are indexed ...

The inequalities have become grotesque, and the political consequences are becoming worrying" By Matthew Ponsford. LONDON, Oct 12 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - As disgruntled voters fall into the arms of promise-all populists, it is time for progressive politicians to get radical and tackle the "grotesque" inequalities that are fuelling extremism, according to economist Guy Standing.. He said Western leaders must finally come clean and publicly back a basic income for all - whether recipients work or not - in a radical break from politics as usual.. "The inequalities have become grotesque, and the political consequences are becoming worrying, with the election of (U.S. President) Donald Trump, and support for far-right fascists, and for Brexit," said Standing, professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.. Standing, who last month addressed world leaders at the United Nations in Geneva, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that political bravery was vital in ...

Purpose: Subscription based electronic journals which are contained in the Big Deal have become predominant in the publication of scholarly journals, but some people predict that open access journals will take its place. This paper quantitatively examines how the status of open access journals has changed in the publication of scholarly journals, and discusses how the status of open access journals will be going in the near future. Methods: Three kinds of surveys were conducted: 1)The primary source was information on 38,803 journals published by 2011 in STM extracted from Ulrichsweb. The source was used to calculate the ratio of open access journals to the total number of journals in 2011. 2) he second data source was journal price lists and the web sites of five major commercial publishers. Both primary and second sources were used to calculate the ratio of new open access journals and new subscription based journals year by year. 3) he web sites of open access mega journals were used ...
Bibliometrics and Citation Analysis From the Science Citation Index to Cybermetrics (eBook) : De Bellis, Nicola : Can the methods of science be directed toward science itself? How did it happen that scientists, scientific documents, and their bibliographic links came to be regarded as mathematical variables in abstract models of scientific communication? What is the role of quantitative analyses of scientific and technical documentation in current science policy and management? Bibliometrics and Citation Analysis: From the Science Citation Index to Cybermetrics answers these questions through a comprehensive overview of theories, techniques, concepts, and applications in the interdisciplinary and steadily growing field of bibliometrics.Since citation indexes came into the limelight during the mid-1960s, citation networks have become increasingly important for many different research fields. The book begins by investigating the empirical, philosophical, and mathematical foundations of bibliometrics,

The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies. An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the ...
