AU - Krishna, M. G.. AU - Rao, K. S.. AU - Goyal, K.. PY - 2005/4/1. Y1 - 2005/4/1. N2 - The factors causing severe wear of natural teeth must be identified and eliminated, or reduced before attempting restorative treatment. This will not only prevent further wear of teeth but also improve the long-term prognosis of restorative treatment. The different clinical situations can be classified in to three types, as described by Turner and Missirlian. While most of the cases can be managed without increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO), in some cases, the vertical dimension has to be increased. The evaluation and establishment of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is considered particularly important. Before placement of fixed restorations to increase the VDO, a removable splint, and then provisional ...
What treatments can the prosthodontist perform?. Prosthodontic treatments are designed to be functional, long lasting and pleasing to the eye. These procedures can only be completed on generally healthy teeth. Issues like gum disease need to be controlled before prosthodontic treatments can begin.. There are an ever-increasing number of hi-tech prosthodontic treatments available including the following:. Dental Implants - Implants are designed to replace the natural teeth in the best possible way. Titanium roots are implanted in the jawbone in the same way as natural tooth roots. Implants look and feel the same as natural teeth.. Dental Veneers - Veneers are porcelain/ceramic covers that are bonded to the natural teeth. Veneers can instantly solve problems like uneven teeth, stained teeth, and chips and damage caused by general wear and tear.. Dental Crowns - Prosthetic crowns are generally made from porcelain, metal or a combination of the two. They have been designed to mimic the natural crown ...
Grey value correlation is generally considered not to be applicable to matching of images of different modalities. In this paper we will demonstrate that, with a simple preprocessing step for the Computed Tomography (CT) images, grey value correlation can be used for matching of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with CT images. Two simple schemes are presented for automated 3D matching of MRI and CT neuroradiological images. Both schemes involve grey value correlation of the images in order to determine the matching transformation. In both schemes the preprocessing consists of a simple intensity mapping of the original CT image only. It will be shown that the results are insensitive to considerable changes in the parameters that determine the intensity mapping. Whichever preprocessing step is chosen, the correlation method is robust and accurate. Results, compared with a skin marker-based matching technique, are shown for brain images. Additionally, results are shown for an entirely new ...

Segmental mandibulectomy is a surgical procedure involving removal of a segment of the mid-body of the mandible while preserving both the rostral and caudal mandible. This technique is indicated for benign oral tumors, such as acanthomatous ameloblastoma and either small or low-grade malignant tumors, of the mid-mandibular ramus. The overall complication rate following segmental mandibulectomy in dogs is 33%, including dehiscence and mandibular drift with associated malocclusion. Rim mandibulectomy is similar to a segmental mandibulectomy in terms of indications and technique; however, the ventral cortex of the mandibular ramus is preserved with a cresenteric osteotomy. Preservation of the ventral cortex of the mandible prevents mandibular drift and malocclusion associated with segmental mandibulectomy.. The overall complication rate following segmental mandibulectomy in dogs is 33%. The most common complications are wound dehiscence (17%) and short-term eating difficulties (up to 44% overall ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Prosthetic rehabilitation of hemimandibulectomy defect with removable partial denture prosthesis using an attachment-retained guiding flange. AU - Nair, Sangeeta. AU - Aparna, I.. AU - Dhanasekar, B.. AU - Prabhu, Nayana. PY - 2018/1/1. Y1 - 2018/1/1. N2 - The restoration of normal function and esthetics is often challenging in the prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with hemimandibulectomy defects due to unstable occlusion and mandibular deviation. The extensive period of time for completion of healing of the reconstructed mandible through reconstructive plastic surgery and/or implant-assisted prosthesis may compromise the masticatory function by causing delay in the fabrication of definitive prosthesis. This case report describes a novel technique for the construction of customized attachment-retained mandibular guiding flange prosthesis for immediate rectification of the frontal plane rotation occurring after hemimandibulectomy.. AB - The restoration of normal function and ...
When the conditions of your teeth, jaws, face and any oral tissues are compromised you may wish to seek a prosthodontic assessment. Materials and methods: Thirty subjects received 2 PM and 2 M implants. A new RPD was made. Implant support was provided 3 months later. In a cross-over model, randomly, 2 implants (PM or M) supported the RPD during 3 months. Masticatory performance was assessed using the mixing ability index (MAI). Clinical and radiographic parameters were assessed. Non-parametric statistical analysis for related samples and post hoc comparisons were performed. Results: Masticatory performance differed significantly between the stages of treatment (P show less ...

Basic sciences are developing rapidly in contemporary society, but it may take some time before important new knowledge finds its way into daily clinical practise. Good clinical science deals with the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of individual patients. We need well-educated dentists to identify the numerous unsolved questions relevant to oral rehabilitation, in order to stimulate clinical and basic sciences to provide scientifically documented answers. It is the intention of the journal to stimulate contributions, which may help to bridge the gap between relevant basic sciences and clinical dentistry.. ...
Ceramic veneer treatments start with careful planning (case selection, examination, wax-up) followed by multiple clinical and laboratory steps. Many of these steps are technique sensitive, interdependent, and case specific. Techniques sensitivity refers to some of the delicate processes such as bonding and adjustments of the very thin fragile veneers. With accurate bonding protocols, veneers can stay in place for a long time. However, the slightest contamination at bonding or misplacement of the veneer can result in early failure and de-bonding. The steps of veneer treatments are, just as in most Prosthodontic treatments, are highly interdependent. A mistake in preparation design can manifest later as a failure in esthetic or mechanical failure. For example, if the tooth is very discolored and the preparation is very minimal then the resulting esthetics will be compromised. Lastly, these treatments are case specific. The process of planning and executing veneers has to be case-by-case ...

Methods are disclosed for locating and focusing on a fiducial mark on a specimen slide. A plurality of pixels are identified as candidate pixels. A pixel is identified as a candidate pixel based on a number of empty pixels in an area defined by boundary lines extending from the pixel, and one or more dimensions, such as the perimeter, of the defined area. The candidate pixel enclosing the largest area is selected from the group or set of candidate pixels, and the coordinates of that pixel are considered to be the coordinates of the corner of the fiducial mark. The methods can be performed using different gray values that define dark or fiducial pixels and light or empty pixels. Differences between the results at different gray values can be used as focus scores for automatic focusing on the fiducial mark.

This article describes a case of persistent saliva drooling, and the accompanying chronic angular cheilitis, that is not uncommon in the elderly patient population. A drug therapy and the temporomandibular joint aspect of vertical dimension of occlusion during prosthodontic evaluation and construction are presented. Also described is a method to incorporate a canula into the denture prosthesis to channel the saliva toward the oropharyngeal area for geriatric and handicapped patients who suffer from chronic drooling and angular cheilitis.
Bilateral rostral mandibulectomy is a surgical procedure involving removal of the mandible rostral to the second premolar tooth. This technique is indicated for benign oral tumors, such as acanthomatous ameloblastoma and either small or low-grade malignant tumors, which have crossed the midline.. The overall complication rate following bilateral rostral mandibulectomy in dogs is 19%. The most common complications are wound dehiscence (2%-8%) and short-term eating difficulties (up to 44% overall with 30%, 70%, 90%, and 97% of dogs returning to voluntary eating by day 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively). The median time to return to voluntary eating is 2 days following bilateral rostral mandibulectomy in dogs. In one study, prehension difficulties were common following bilateral rostral mandibulectomy, particularly with more aggressive procedures extending caudal to the second premolar teeth because of the loss of bone and soft tissue support of the tongue; however, the majority of dogs with prehension ...
Edentulism or toothlessness is the condition of being toothless to at least some degree; in organisms (such as humans) that naturally have teeth (dentition), it is the result of tooth loss. Loss of some teeth is called partial edentulism, whereas loss of all teeth is called complete edentulism. Persons who have lost teeth are (either partially or completely) edentulous (edentate), whereas those who have not lost teeth can be called dentate by comparison. For example, a scientific study may include a partially edentulous group and a healthy dentate control group. Organisms that never possessed teeth can also be described as edentulous, such as members of the former zoological classification order of Edentata, which included anteaters and sloths, all of which possess no anterior teeth and either no or poorly developed posterior teeth. In naturally dentate species, edentulism is more than just the simple presence or absence of teeth; it is biochemically complex, because the teeth, jaws, and oral ...
The overall balance between the bacteria plaque challenge and the body immunoinflammatory responses is crucial to periodontal health. Diet also impacts on periodontal health, from both the viewpoint of plaque build-up and that of the body immunoinflammatory responses. Stress has additionally been connected to periodontal disease, but its not clear whether the connection has a physical foundation or is born merely of the fact that people under stress are less inclined to perform regular good dental hygiene. As already stated, most gum diseases may be easily prevented by daily complete plaque removal. Irregularities around the tooth like overhanging edges on fillings, badly contoured fillings, and some forms of partial denture designs make tooth cleaning hard and promote the accumulation of plaque. The presence of calculus - plaque which has calcified and hard - can also cause plaque to collect more easily and requires professional removal. Since periodontal disease is connected to a heightened ...

Lost tooth can give rise to many problems with oral health. The gap in the dentition can reduce chewing efficiency and increase food lodgment. This can lead to periodontal problems and formation of cavities. Implant dentistry is considered to be one of the advanced treatment options because of its advantages over other prosthodontic treatments. The implanted tooth replaces lost tooth root and the natural crown wonderfully and functions just as good as the lost natural tooth.. Dental implant surgery is one of the surgical procedures which is conducted by professional dental surgeons. It is implanting of titanium screws or posts into the jaw bone. The implanted metal piece integrates with the bone finely. Your dentist will initially examine if you have sufficient space and bone in the area of the lost tooth. Under normal circumstances, it takes about four to six months for the implant to get fused with the bone. Once the implant is fused with the bone, an abutment is fixed over the implant. Going ...

There is a growing interest in minimally invasive implant therapy as a standard prosthodontic treatment, providing complete restoration of occlusal function. A new treatment method (CADDIMA), which combines both computerized tomographic (CT) and optical laser-scan data for planning and design of surgical guides, implant abutments, and prosthetic devices, is described. Imaging using a "NewTom 3G" cone beam CT scanner and a modified laser triangulation scanner "D200c" is discussed, as are impression and surgical guide fabrication, which allow for flapless, precise implant placement and an accurate provisional prosthesis. The new approach gives the operator full control over the design of the implant prosthesis for planning of proper occlusal relations and shows promise for further evaluation ...

Often when people lose their back teeth, they replace them with a removable partial denture. Sometimes, they dont replace the back teeth at all, thinking that if they dont show when smiling, they dont need to be replaced. If back teeth are not replaced, your bite (how upper and lower teeth fit together) will be compromised, which may result in headaches, teeth grinding, and other problems associated with TMJ disorder. This also happens with a removable partial that no longer fits properly due to bone resorption, or deterioration.. A removable partial actually accelerates the bone resorption process, resulting in more rapid bone deterioration. In addition, the clasps that hold the partial in place put extreme pressure on the natural teeth they hook onto, loosening them and in many cases, eventually leading to the loss of those teeth. Most patients with partial dentures state that they are uncomfortable and that they rarely wear them.. Also, as the bite collapses from the bone loss, the facial ...
