With the development of precise three-dimensional motion measurement systems and powerful computers for three-dimensional graphical visualization, it is possible to record and fully reconstruct human jaw motion. In this paper, we describe a visualization system for displaying three-dimensional jaw movements in speech. The system is designed to take as input jaw motion data obtained from one or multi-dimensional recording systems. In the present application, kinematic records of jaw motion were recorded using an optoelectronic measurement system (Optotrak). The corresponding speech signal was recorded using an analog input channel. The three orientation angles and three positions that describe the motion of the jaw as a rigid skeletal structure were derived from the empirical measurements. These six kinematic variables, which in mechanical terms account fully for jaw motion kinematics, act as inputs that drive a real-time three-dimensional animation of a skeletal jaw and upper skull. The ...

Jaw wiring is a medical procedure to keep the jaw closed for a period of time. Originally, it was used as the mandibular equivalent of a cast, to fix the jaw in place while a fracture healed. Today, jaws may also be wired for weight-loss purposes, to prevent the ingestion of solid food. Jaw wiring is performed by attaching orthodontic brackets to the teeth, and wrapping pliable wire either around or through the brackets. The wiring may be configured to place the patients lower jaw in a semi-closed resting position. This permits a moderate amount of jaw movement and relatively clear speech, but inhibits the ingestion of solid foods, forcing patients to adhere to a liquid diet. The type of jaw wiring used in patients with mandibular fractures, or those who need orthognathic surgery to correct deformed jaws, is known as inter-maxillary fixation (IMF) or maxillo-mandibular fixation (MMF). It is performed by an oral surgeon, who attaches an arch bar to the upper jaw and another to the lower jaw ...
A gripper to hold a fish upright during hook removal has a pliers-like body. This body includes a first member having an outer handle portion joined to an upper jaw portion and a second member having an inner handle portion joined to a lower jaw portion. The lower jaw portion is pivotally carried in an opening between sidewalls of the upper jaw portion. Bottom edges of outer segments of the upper jaw portion sidewalls have tooth-like abrasions. These abrasions mate with like abrasions on a top wall of a swivel element pivotally attached to the lower jaw portion. When the handle portions of the gripper are squeezed togther so that the jaw and swivel element abrasions compressively engage a lower jaw of a fish, downward movement of the swivel element is inhibited by a locking action between complementarily formed offsets on a bottom surface of the swivel element top wall and on the lower jaw portion.
Rhonda came to the Oral and Maxillofacial Unit in 1990 when she was 20 years old because of persistent pain in her jaw joints caused by her upper and lower teeth not meeting. The problem lay in the faulty relationship of her upper and lower jaws. The lower jaw was slewed to the right, whilst the upper jaw and nose were slewed to the left. Her upper jaw and face also looked sunken back and hollow compared to the lower jaw. She was disturbed by her facial appearance although the initial reason that she came for treatment was the pain in her jaw joint.. Following an eighteenth-month period of orthodontics she underwent and her upper jaw and nasal bones were also fractured. Her upper jaw was brought forward and fixed in place with titanium metal plates. The nose was straightened and the lower jaw was then fixed in its new position in relation to the upper jaw so that the teeth met properly.. Rhonda describes the transformation in her life as fantastic. She was not only cured of her jaw joint pain ...
The jaw and its joints are often referred to as temporomandibular. Jaw disorders and injuries may affect any person at any time causing pain that radiates through the jaws, face, head, neck and back. For some people, the pain is more severe than others depending on the type of injury.. Jaw injury may also result from teeth grinding or bruxism that originates from anxiety. Some individuals grind their teeth when they sleep and others do it awake when they concentrate. Malocclusion genetic tendency or developing bite disorders may also lead to jaw injury and discomfort.. Bite disorders or malocclusion develop if an individuals teeth on the upper and lower jaw do not meet properly when biting the teeth together. The jaw misalignment causes an imbalance of pressure on oral structures leading to temporomandibular or jaw joint dysfunction. The condition affects the ability to eat and speak.. Orthodontists or oral surgeons treat individuals with temporomandibular disorders and jaw injuries. Treatments ...
OBJECTIVES--To test the hypotheses that Parkinsons disease can differentially produce deficits in voluntary and rhythmic jaw movements, which involve different neuronal circuits, and that levodopa treatment improves specific components of the motor deficit. METHODS--Patients with idiopathic Parkinsons disease and control subjects were tested on a series of jaw motor tasks that included simple voluntary movement, isometric clenching, and natural and paced rhythmic movements. Jaw movements were measured by changes in electromagnetic fields and EMG activity. Patients with Parkinsons disease with fluctuations in motor responses to levodopa were tested while off and on. RESULTS--During the off state, patients with Parkinsons disease were significantly worse than the control subjects on most tasks. The deficits included a decrease in amplitude and velocity during jaw opening and closing, aberrant patterns and low amplitude of EMG activity during clenching, and low vertical amplitude and prolonged ...

Tension-type headaches can be treated with a specialized orthotic appliance (a completely different design which functions differently than a night guard or splint) which is used to reposition the lower jaw so the jaw muscles are more relaxed and the jaw joints are in the correct position. This appliance limits the amount of force the closing jaw muscles can generate resulting in the reduction or elimination of headaches, migraines, jaw pain, facial pain, TMJ pain, neck and shoulder pain.. There are many nerves, ligaments, and blood vessels in and around the jaw joints. If the jaw joints are not in the correct position, the joints can impinge on these structures causing various pains about the face, head, neck, and shoulders. The jaw joints must be in the correct position.. Dr. Busciglio has treated many patients with chronic headaches and/or migraines and insures the jaw joints are in the proper position through the use of Tomography TMJ x-rays. Most patients have an 80% to 100% reduction of ...
Existence of a proper jaw line in individuals is one of the most desired attributes for personality judgement since ages. Some may be blessed with attractive jaw lines and some may not be that lucky. Some may have lost their proper jaw formation due to injuries, accidents etc. For those unfortunate individuals, jaw correction surgery or orthognathic surgery (medical term) is a boon that is brought about by advancements in the dental field. It is a surgical procedure done to realign the deformed jaw structure to acquire facial symmetry and to treat deformations. Corrective jaw surgery helps to treat wide range of conditions as explained below in this blog.. Asymmetry of jaws - It is a condition in which there are non uniformities within the upper and lower jaws or left and right side of jaws causing discomfort. This may happen due to un-uniform growth by age or due to injuries. This condition can be corrected by treatments that may include wearing an orthopaedic dental appliance, conditioning of ...

A break in the lower jaw bone could occur due to trauma caused by physical assault, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, and falls. Both men and women are equally susceptible to having fractures of the jaw bone. However, due to the more aggressive nature of the causes, the incidence of fractured lower jaw is 3 times higher in men than in women. The mandible may undergo a simple fracture, comminuted fracture or a compound fracture.. In a simple fracture, the bone does not fragment after the break, and there is no penetration of the broken bone into the skin and other tissues. In a comminuted fracture, the bone breaks into more than two fragments. In a compound fracture, the broken ends of the bone pierce the skin and other nearby tissues. Fracture of the lower jaw is typically characterized by tenderness and excruciating pain that worsens during any jaw movements. This makes activities such as speaking, eating, or just opening the mouth very painful.. There may also be visible bruising and ...
Eels have many traits that suggest a lively intelligence. They are known, for example, for going on hunger strikes in captivity, and they hunt cooperatively with groupers in the wild.. On the other hand, theyre also famous for sudden and egregious acts of aggression. Taped to Reeces office door is a meat-red photograph of a spectacular eel injury, a flayed forearm. He says he keeps it to remind himself to be careful around these fish.. Morays have two sets of jaws, Reece explains: Oral jaws and a set of jaws in their throat called pharyngeal jaws. Set into both pairs of jaws are big rear-facing fangs. When the eels attack prey, they actually bite them twice. They skewer prey with their oral jaws and then they launch the pharyngeal jaws into their mouths to drag it down their throats.. Whats more, says Reece, once they bite, they often wont let go. You have to crush their skulls to get them off of you.. How do you collect an animal that served as the inspiration for the movie Alien?. Reece ...
Many people receive orthodontic treatment to fix their crooked teeth, but braces can also resolve bite issues, as well. Braces are great ways to fix misaligned jaws in children and adults and help prevent the consequences of underbites and overbites. Misaligned jaws are often painful and obvious, and many children are unfortunately teased by their peers because of it. Our bite refers to how the upper and lower teeth meet together, which influences how we chew, eat and speak. The two most common bite problems are an underbite and overbite, with an underbite occurring whenever the lower jaw sits in front of the upper jaw while the overbite happens when the upper jaw protrudes abnormally over the lower jaw. While these deformities look awkward, they have consequences that are more serious than aesthetic concerns. Underbite create a bulldog appearance as the lower jaw protrudes out, which not only puts a lot of stress on the joints but also causes tooth wear. Overbites create buck teeth that stick ...
It is now accepted that the precursors of the jawed vertebrates are the long extinct bony (armoured) jawless fish, the so-called ostracoderms.[59][60] The earliest known fish with jaws are the now extinct placoderms[61] and spiny sharks.[62] Placoderms were a class of fish, heavily armoured at the front of their body, which first appeared in the fossil records during the Silurian about 430 million years ago. Initially they were very successful, diversifying remarkably during the Devonian. They became extinct by the end of that period, about 360 million years ago.[63] Their largest species, Dunkleosteus terrelli, measured up to 10 m (33 ft)[64][65] and weighed 3.6 t (4.0 short tons).[66] It possessed a four bar linkage mechanism for jaw opening that incorporated connections between the skull, the thoracic shield, the lower jaw and the jaw muscles joined together by movable joints.[67][68] This mechanism allowed Dunkleosteus terrelli to achieve a high speed of jaw opening, opening their jaws in 20 ...

The vertebrate jaw probably originally evolved in the Silurian period and appeared in the Placoderm fish which further diversified in the Devonian. The two most anterior pharyngeal arches are thought to have become the jaw itself and the hyoid arch, respectively. The hyoid system suspends the jaw from the braincase of the skull, permitting great mobility of the jaws. While there is no fossil evidence directly to support this theory, it makes sense in light of the numbers of pharyngeal arches that are visible in extant jawed vertebrates (the Gnathostomes), which have seven arches, and primitive jawless vertebrates (the Agnatha), which have nine. The original selective advantage offered by the jaw may not be related to feeding, but rather to increased respiration efficiency.[1] The jaws were used in the buccal pump (observable in modern fish and amphibians) that pumps water across the gills of fish or air into the lungs in the case of amphibians. Over evolutionary time the more familiar use of ...

The activity of jaw and hyolingual muscles during the entire feeding sequence is examined in the lizard Agama stellio, with special focus on the intraoral transport and swallowing stages. Correlation of electromyography (EMG) data with kinematics shows that the kinematic phases (slow opening, SO; fast opening, FO; fast closing, FC; slow closing/power stroke, SC/PS) are characterised by distinct activities in the jaw and hyolingual muscles. The SO phase is clearly the result of tongue protraction (upon protraction, the tongue is pulled against the prey and consequently the lower jaw is pushed down), whereas the FO phase is caused by activity in the jaw opener and dorsal cervical muscles. Both the FC and SC/PS phases are characterised by pronounced activity in the jaw adductor muscles. Tongue retraction is produced by activity in the hyoid and tongue retractor muscles. A quantitative analysis of time-related EMG data shows that, in accordance with the kinematic analyses, three different stages can ...
Jaw clicking is almost always a sign of a misalignment of your teeth, your jawbones, or your jaw muscles. The temporomandibular joints TMJ is the jaw joint that is affected by teeth grinding, uneven stretching of facial muscles or misalignment of the temporal bones with the jaw bone. Read below on three categories of jaw clicking causes - muscular, skeletal, and dental - and at-home treatments you can take.
A square jaw line is considered more of a masculine feature that gives the face a boxier shape, and it is for this reason that jaw line contouring has become a popular cosmetic procedure. Cosmetic jaw line contouring is typically performed on women. It has the ability to achieve a less prominent jaw line, create a harmonious balance with other facial features and soften the appearance.. People who have an enlarged masseter often have a square jaw line. The masseter is a muscle located in the jaw, responsible for moving the jaw when people clench or chew.. Some personal habits, such as excessive chewing of hard foods, chewing gum, or grinding teeth can cause a noticeable enlargement of the masseter ...
The sound can break the silence of the night, frighten small children and startle sleeping adults. The noise may be disturbing to the spouse, roommate or witness, but it is even more harmful to the person performing the grinding. Often the individual is not aware of their grinding.. For many years it was believed that grinding was a tension symptom-that it stemmed from emotional or psychological stress. Today, dental authorities agree that emotional stress maybe a contributory factor but the real cause is an improper fit between the upper and lower teeth and the jaw joints.. Most people grind their teeth in an unconscious effort to correct tooth shape or position irregularities or a improper fit of opposing teeth when they come together, or an imbalance of the jaw joints as the jaw moves. This is also the major cause of TMJ or jaw joint pain and discomfort.. You may recognize signs of grinding or clenching as the top surfaces of teeth gradually wear down to flat surfaces and front teeth appear ...

We mentioned at the top of the post that the jaw length of I. latidens can now be measured at 333 mm (as composited and reconstructed, above. From Witton 2012). As such, we can now estimate the entire skull length at around 450 mm (the posteriormost part of the braincase is poorly known, so this remains an estimate until more remains are found), which is considerably shorter than the 560 mm assumed by Hooley and others. In this configuration, the posterior skull is very large with a height nearly 40 per cent of the jaw length, and a width at the jaw joint around a third of the same dimension. For a long snouted pterosaur (that is to say, a species that is not considered characteristically short-faced like anurognathids or tapejarids), these values are huge (well, if we ignore taxa that increase their skull heights with crests. Thats cheating.). The tooth row, already considered to be very short, is now even shorter in occupying only the first 27 per cent of the jaw. In addition, this ...

Crossbite - When a childs upper jaw is too narrow to fit correctly with the lower jaw, the back top teeth will bite inside of the lower teeth instead of outside. This can be corrected by expanding the upper jaw.. Crowding - Even before all of a childs permanent (adult) teeth come in, we can tell when there will not be enough room to accommodate them. Widening the upper jaw can create the necessary space without the need for tooth extractions.. Impacted Teeth - When a tooth that hasnt come in (erupted) yet and is blocked by other teeth, widening the upper jaw can allow it to erupt into proper position on its own. This most often happens with canine or eye teeth - the pointier ones located directly under the eyes.. Expanding the upper jaw has other benefits: It can broaden the smile in an aesthetically pleasing way, it can limit the number of teeth that need to be removed to create space and can also improve breathing. And it can shorten overall orthodontic treatment time (the amount of time ...
