The main goal of this study was to examine the construct validity of this questionnaire
This study analyzes medical and socioeconomic variables of the phenomenon of pediatric health mobility in Campania region. However we believe that the study methodology of our research may be used also for other Italian regions with high rates of patients migration.. In addition to causing stress to patients and their families, health migration determines significant costs to native region and subtracts economic resources to the development of their human and technological assets [20]. In general, international analyses in adults [6-17] have shown that perceived quality of services, waiting lists, and doctors expertness seem to represent important aspects for patients. Our families feel that pediatric extra-regional hospitalization in Campania region occurs mainly due to a (truly or perceived) lack of adequate and/or well organized facilities to provide updated assistance to children with complex diseases. However, unexpectedly, migration involved also conditions of medium or low ...
Invasive listeriosis is a rare, life-threatening foodborne disease. Lombardy, an Italian region accounting for 16% of the total population, reported 55% of all listeriosis cases in the years 2006-2010. The aim of our study was to provide a snapshot of listeriosis epidemiology in this region after the implementation of a voluntary laboratory-based surveillance system. We characterized by serotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, multilocus sequence typing and detection of epidemic clone markers, 134 isolates from 132 listeriosis cases, including 15 pregnancy-related cases, occurring in the years 2006-2010 in Lombardy. Demographic and clinical characteristics of cases have also been described. The mean age of non pregnancy-associated cases was 64.7 years, with 55.9% of cases being older than 65 years. Cases having no underlying medical conditions accounted for 11.6%. The all-cause fatality rate of 83 cases with a known survival outcome was 25.3%. Serotypes 1/2a and 4b comprised 52.2% and 38.8% of

Background: Studies about the impact of developmental dyslexia(DD) on parenting arerare. Our investigation aimed to assess maternal stress levels and mothers copying styles in a population of dyslexic children. Methods: A total of 874 children (500 boys, 374 girls;(mean age 8.32±2.33 years) affected by DD was included in the study. A total of 1421 typically developing children (789 boys, 632 girls; mean age 8.25±3.19 years)were recruited from local schools of participating Italian Regions (Abruzzi, Calabria, Campania, Puglia, Umbria, Sicily) and used as control-children group. All mothers (of bothDD and typically developing children) filled out an evaluation for parental stress (Parenting Stress Index- Short Form: PSI-SF) and coping strategies (Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations:CISS). Results: No statistical differences for mean age (p=0.456) and gender (p=0.577) were found between DD and control children. Mothers of children affected by DD showed an higher rate of all parental stress indexes
On May 22-23, 2018 was held a study visit at the Lombardy Region, organised by The Foundation of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, as responsible for the coordination, within WP5, of the sub-task linked to the implementation of good practices for "Adults at work".. The practice "Workplace Health Promotion - Lombardy WHP Network" was a practice identified as a good practice in the first CHRODIS Joint Action (2014-2017), and it is aimed to be implemented in the Region of Andalusia during the CHRODIS PLUS Joint Action (2017-2020).. The meeting was fruitful to get to know the Good Practice better, directly from the experts and implementers involved and to strengthen the cooperation with them. Coordinators, implementers, participants and other stakeholders of the Italian practice offered a thorough explanation of the central features of the Lombardy WHP intervention. The exchange of information also revealed potential barriers/difficulties, as well as key facilitators, to be taken into account ...
Italy lost 25,000 people in 2010 due to the demographic crisis. But if it had the same rate of Liguria and Genoa, it would have lost 250,000: an apocalypse.. Liguria is the eighth richest Italian region. A very wealthy area. Yet, the world studies Liguria to understand the future of countries committing suicide. The percentage of people over 75 years old in the Italian region of Liguria, already 13 percent, the highest figure across Europe, will rise to 18 percent by 2030.. Savona is the province of Liguria where 28.1 per cent of the population is over 65 (only two years ago the percentage was 27 per cent). In Liguria, the elderly are over 433,000, almost one-third of the population. Liguria is also the region with the largest number of abortions in Italy: 11.87 cases per 1,000 women. This process of self liquidation began in the time when Genoa, Ligurias capital, held the medals of consumerism: more smoking, more electrodes, more TVs, more perfumes and beauty creams.. But Genoa was already a ...
In the framework of the ISAAC Project (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood),14 a survey was conducted in Italy between 1994 and 1995 in 10 areas of northern and central Italy in a representative sample of 6-14 year old children/adolescents (1st SIDRIA Study, Studi Italiani sui Disordini Respiratori dellInfanzia e lAmbiente).15-17 A second large, multicentre study on the relation between the environment and respiratory disorders in children and adolescents was carried out in 2002, also including areas of southern Italy (2nd SIDRIA Study).18. This report concerns the 2nd SIDRIA Study, which involved children and adolescents living in five areas of northern Italy (Turin, Milan, Mantua, Trent, and Emilia-Romagna), five areas of central Italy (Rome, Florence, Empoli, Siena, and Colleferro), and two areas of the south (Bari, Palermo). Each area randomly sampled at least 1000 subjects from the local schools, weighted for the total number of students at the school. If the number ...
This multicenter study describes the type-specific prevalence of HPV infection in the general population from central and southern Italy, comparing the data with previously published Italian studies. Women aged from 25 to 65 who attended cervical cancer screening in five different Italian regions were tested for HPV infection with Hybrid Capture II (HCII) low and high risk probes. Women repeating Pap-test upon unsatisfactory or positive results, or as a post-treatment and post-colposcopy follow-up analysis, were excluded from our study. High risk (HR) HPV positive samples were typed using GP5+/GP6+ primed PCR, followed by Reverse Line Blot for 18 high/intermediate risk HPV types, while low risk (LR) HPV positive samples were tested with type specific primers for HPV6 and HPV11. 3817 women had a valid HCII test: 350 of them (9.2%) were positive for HR probes, 160 (4.2%) for LR probes, while 57 women were positive for both. Multiple infections were detected in 97 HR HPV positive women. The most common
Background In 2008, after the first West Nile virus (WNV) detection in the Emilia-Romagna region, a surveillance system, including mosquito- and bird-based surveillance, was established to evaluate the virus presence. Surveillance was improved in following years by extending the monitoring to larger areas and increasing the numbers of mosquitoes and birds tested. Methodology/Principal Findings A network of mosquito traps, evenly distributed and regularly activated, was set up within the surveyed area. A total of 438,558 mosquitoes, grouped in 3,111 pools and 1,276 birds (1,130 actively sampled and 146 from passive surveillance), were tested by biomolecular analysis. The survey detected WNV in 3 Culex pipiens pools while Usutu virus (USUV) was found in 89 Cx. pipiens pools and in 2 Aedes albopictus pools. Two birds were WNV-positive and 12 were USUV-positive. Furthermore, 30 human cases of acute meningoencephalitis, possibly caused by WNV or USUV, were evaluated for both viruses and 1,053 blood bags
Downloadable! This paper analyses the Italian regional efficiency of the hospitality sector using a data envelopment analysis (DEA), for the time span 2000-2004. Via a window DEA, pure technical efficiency is computed. The Lombardy region presents the best relative performance. Overall Italian regions denote important sources of inefficiency mostly related to their inputs. Via a truncated-Tobit analysis, the rate of utilisation and regional intrinsic features positively are found to affect hospitality efficiency. Nevertheless, empirical evidence does not support spill-over effects amongst Italian regions.
This study was mainly conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a panel of selected Mini-and Microsatellite loci for sub-typing closely related isolates. The 84 isolates included in this study have not been previously sub-typed with any other method and were identified as Type C. Most of the isolates analysed were from two northern Italian regions (Lombardy and Emilia Romagna), where about the 60% of the National dairy farms is located. Few isolates derived from other northern regions (Piedmont and Veneto), while the rest of the isolates came from herds located in the centre and south of Italy. As a result, the sampling was not representative of the whole country, so epidemiological conclusions about the distribution of the different genotypes could not be drawn. Moreover, it is very plausible the existence of links related to cattle trading which can further complicate the epidemiological analysis.. Considering the 84 isolates from different herds, despite the above mentioned limits, type MVS ...
Although sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is becoming the standard approach for axillary staging in patients with small breast cancer, criteria for patient selection and some technical aspects of the procedure have yet to be clearly defined. The aim of the present survey was therefore to investigate the way in which SNB is used by general surgeons working in the Veneto region, Italy. A 29-item questionnaire regarding various aspects of SNB practice was mailed to surgeons in charge of breast surgery in all the 56 surgical centres of the region. The rate of response to the questionnaire was 82.1% (n = 46); 69.6% (n = 32) of the respondents routinely perform SNB in their clinical practice. Most of the interviewed surgeons (93.5%) expressed the belief that the acceptable false negative rate should be ≤5%. However, among the surgeons who perform SNB, only 34.4% performed more than 20 SNB during the learning phase. Indications are limited to tumours of ≤1 cm by 31.2% (n = 10) of respondents, ≤2 cm by 46.9% (n
BMC (BIOMED CENTRAL)-Genetic adaptations of early Italian ancestors to environmental changes, such as those that occurred soon after the Last Glacial Maximum, may explain some of the genetic differences between northern and southern Italian populations today, according to a study published in BMC Biology. The research suggests that northern and southern Italian populations may have begun to diverge genetically as early as 19,000-12,000 years ago and constitutes the earliest known evidence of genetic divergence in Italy so far.. A team of researchers at the University of Bologna sequenced the genomes of 38 unrelated participants from different regions in Italy, each the third generation of their family native to each region. The genomes were selected as representative of known genetic differences across the Italian population and over 17 million distinct genetic variants were found between individuals. The authors compared these variations with existing genetic data from 35 populations across ...

Southern Italy For the purpose of this entry, southern Italy is defined as Rome and all areas south of Rome (see map). Many ethnic groups, such as the Greeks, Spaniards, and Arabs, have passed through southern Italy over the millennia and influenced its cuisines. Traditionally, southern Italians have been much poorer than their northern counterparts. Source for information on Southern Italy: Encyclopedia of Food and Culture dictionary.
This course intends to analyse literary and cinematic representations of the Risorgimento, the controversial movement that led to the unification of Italy in 1860. Through the study of three contemporary literary works (two of which to be read in English) and two films set during the Risorgimento, students will be encouraged to reflect not only on this particular historical movement but also on issues relating to the development of an Italian national identity with the aim of gaining a better understanding of contemporary Italy. by Sylvia Poggioli. American gourmets and lovers of Italian food products, your days as food smugglers as over.. No more stuffing your suitcases with delicacies bought in Italy, hoping the sniffer dogs at JFK or other American airports wont detect the banned-in-the-USA foodstuffs inside your luggage.. In the U.S., theyre called cured meats, the French say charcuterie and in Italy, the word for cured-pork products is salumi. Starting May 28, a four-decades-old ban on the import of many Italian salumi will be lifted.. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the Italian regions of Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Piedmont, and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano, are free of swine vesicular diseases. Imports of pork products from those areas, says USDA, present a low risk of introducing the disease into the U.S. The disease was first detected in the 1960s and can survive cooking and even long curing.. Up to now, only few Italian pork products were approved for import to the ...
EAGLE is a large population-based case-control study designed and conducted to investigate the genetic and environmental determinants of lung cancer and smoking persistence using an integrative approach that allows combined analysis of genetic, environmental, clinical, and behavioral data. The study includes over 2,000 incident lung cancer cases, both males and females of Italian nationality, ages 35 to 79 years old, with verified lung cancer of any histological type, and over 2,000 healthy population-based controls matched to cases by age, gender, and residence. The participation rate was high: 85% and 73% in cases and controls, respectively. Lung cancer cases were enrolled from 13 hospitals within the Lombardy region of Italy. The healthy controls were randomly selected from the same residential area of the lung cancer cases. The study setting, the Lombardy region of Italy, is served by a network of modern hospitals, medical schools, and a regional health service. Within the Lombardy region, ...
Estimating CKD prevalence is difficult. Information on CKD prevalence is rather scanty in Italy and available figures come from surveys in selected geographical areas. Administrative data have been already demonstrated to be an effective tool in estimating the epidemiological burden of diseases, however there is limited experience in literature as far as CKD is concerned. The aim of this study is to develop an algorithm based on regional Health Administrative Databases to identify individuals with CKD and provide estimates of disease prevalence in Lazio Region (Italy); about 5.500.000 inhabitants in 2017. A population-level analysis based on a record-linkage strategy using data from Health Administrative Databases has been applied in Lazio Region. CKD cases were identified between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2017 using Outpatient Specialist Service Information System, Hospital Discharge Registry, Ticket Exemption Registry and Drug Dispensing Registry. Age-specific and standardized prevalence rates
Background. Despite massive immigration towards Southern Europe in the last two decades, data on mortality by cause among immigrants in Italy are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate mortality from all and from specific causes of death among immigrants residing in the Veneto Region (Northeastern Italy).Methods. Mortality records for the period 2008-2013 were extracted from the regional archive of causes of death, whereas population data were obtained from the 2011 Italian census. Immigrants were grouped by area of provenience based on the information on country of citizenship available both in mortality and census data. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were computed for the period 2008-2013 in subjects aged 20-59 years, with rates of Italian citizens as a reference.Results. Overall mortality was reduced both in male (SMR 0.86, CI [0.80-0.92]) and female immigrants (SMR 0.72, CI [0.65-0.78]), although an increased risk was observed for subjects from Sub

New major and trace element data, and Sr-Nd-Pb-O isotopic ratios for volcanic mafic rocks outcropping at Monti Ernici in the Mid Latina Valley (southern Latium) are reported, with the aim of investigating the nature and evolution of Plio-Quaternary K-rich volcanism in Central Italy. Petrographical and geochemical studies allow us to identify mafic rocks ranging from ultrapotassic (HKS) to shoshonitic (SHO), and calc-alkaline (CA), these last ones being identified for the first time. The CA rocks exhibit the most primitive signatures for Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes (87Sr/86Sr =0.706326-0.706654; 143Nd/144Nd = 0.512388-0.512361; 206Pb/204Pb = 18.944-18.940). The δ18O values are variable (δ18Ocpx from +5.75 to +7.08 ‰; and δ18Ool from +5.50 to +6.23 ‰), suggesting interaction with carbonate wall rocks. Radiogenic isotope ratios and incompatible elements distribution have several characteristic in common with equivalent rocks from Pontine Islands (Ventotene), Campania and Aeolian arc volcanoes. ...
The European Medicines Agency has approved a multicomponent serogroup B meningococcal vaccine (Bexsero®) for use in individuals of 2 months of age and older. A cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) from the societal and Italian National Health Service perspectives was performed in order to evaluate the impact of vaccinating Italian infants less than 1 y of age with Bexsero®, as opposed to non-vaccination. The analysis was carried out by means of Excel Version 2011 and the TreeAge Pro® software Version 2012. Two basal scenarios that differed in terms of disease incidence (official and estimated data to correct for underreporting) were considered. In the basal scenarios, we considered a primary vaccination cycle with 4 doses (at 2, 4, 6 and 12 months of age) and 1 booster dose at the age of 11 y, the societal perspective and no cost for death. Sensitivity analyses were carried out in which crucial variables were changed over probable ranges. In Italy, on the basis of official data on disease ...
I hope that some scholar, who has labs and money, desire to do the same work on mtDNA N1b, which is deeply rooted in Italy and can demonstrate its expansion from here in all directions as other mrDNAs and YDnas (above all R1b1b2) did. The rare mutation of 16176 from C to G and from G to A is an important sign and can disprove the Jewish science of Mr Behar: "Hg N1b is virtually absent in Europeans" (Behar et alii, The Matrilineal Ancestry of Ashkenazi Jewry: Portrait of a recent Founder Event", AJHG, 2006: pp. 4-5 of the paper). See: Babalini et alii, "The Population history of the Croatian linguistic minority of Molise (southern Italy): a maternal view", EJHG, 2005: N1b in Campania 8,3%, in Abruzzo/Molise 2,7%, in Lazio 3,9%, the only 3 Italian region tested. ...

An Italian regional assembly has passed a resolution to protect and host Russian gay refugees escaping from their country because of the new anti-gay laws. The left-wing Emilia Romagna assembly has voted the bill thanks to the Partito Democratico and Italia dei Valori (Italy of Values) parties. Now the region, one of the most gay-friendly in Italy, will accept Russian LGBT people wanting to change their lives. Some parties, however, voted against the resolution. Former prime minister Silvio Berlusconis party, PDL, and secessionist movement Lega Nord refused to sign the document - and the language they used is an echo of political hatred in Russia itself. Regional councillor from PDL Enrico Aimi said: The Russian law is aimed at protecting the children. Now Russian gay couples can not adopt children, but this is not allowed in Italy as well. So why are we complaining about Russia? Lega Nord councillor Roberto Corradi added: In Emilia Romagna the gay lobbyists want to say what is good and what ...

Italys public healthcare system, founded in 1978, has no mandatory insurance for citizens. Prostate cancer is managed in both public and private hospitals and apart from urology and oncology units in generalpurpose hospitals, several centres dedicated to cancer patients can be found in the country.. According to records of the Italian National Institute for Statistics (ISTAT), there have been more than 42,000 hospital discharges in 2010 for activities related to prostate cancer management in Italy, with the northern regions accounting for about 50% of this figure.. Urological nursing education. A clear distinction exists between the activities performed by doctors and nurse with the former responsible for screening and diagnosing the disease, and prescribing appropriate medical or surgical therapies. Italian nurses do not perform activities such as prostate biopsy, compared with their mainland European colleagues (such as nurses in the UK), and are also prohibited by Italian law to prescribe ...
In 2005 he ran for the first primary election ever held in Italy, called to choose the left-wing LUnione alliances candidate for the presidency of the Puglia region. He won the primary over the rival Francesco Boccia. Many moderates in the alliance criticised the choice, since it appeared impossible that a communist and homosexual could be elected president of a southern Italian region such as Apulia, generally considered to be conservative and strongly Catholic. Vendola, though, declares himself as "believer" (in the line of Pax Christi): he once said that "the most important book for a communist like me is the Bible ...
Massive surface fracturing and sand ejection took place during the main shock of the May 20, 2012, earthquake (Ml = 5.9) in the Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy. These phenomena were induced by the liquefaction of water-saturated sand layers, and they damaged several buildings, as well as many roads and sidewalks. They were clustered between the villages of SantAgostino and Vigarano Mainarda, located along a paleo-reach of the Reno River [Papathanassiou et al. 2012, this volume].

The relation between body mass index and prevalence of 17 chronic diseases or groups of diseases was analysed using data from the 1983 Italian National Health Survey, based on a sample of 72,284 individuals aged 15 or over randomly selected within strata of geographical area, size of place of residence and of household in order to be representative of the whole Italian population. The prevalence of diabetes was directly and strongly related to body weight (age-adjusted relative risk estimates being 1.5 for overweight and 2.7 for obese men compared with normal weight individuals; 1.6 and 2.4 for overweight and obese women). Other conditions directly related to self-reported measures of body weight were hypertension (relative risk = 1.7 for obese men and 1.9 for women), myocardial infarction (relative risk = 1.5 for obese men, 1.6 for women), other heart diseases (relative risk = 1.7 for obese men, 1.5 for women), haemorrhoids or varices (relative risk = 1.2 for obese men, 1.5 for women), ...
In the absence of genetic diversity, plants rely on the capacity of phenotypic plasticity to cope with shifts in environmental conditions. Understanding the mechanisms behind phenotypic plasticity and how local phenotypic adjustments are transferred to clonal offspring, will provide insight into its ecological and evolutionary significance. Epigenetic changes have recently been proposed to play a crucial role in rapid environmental adaptation. While the contribution of epigenetic changes to phenotypic plasticity has been extensively studied in sexual reproducing model organisms, little work has been done on vegetative generations of asexual reproducing plant species. We studied the variability of DNA methylation and bud set phenology of the Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra cv. Italica Duroi), a cultivated tree representing a single genotype worldwide distributed since the eighteenth century. Bud set observations and CpG methyl polymorphisms were studied on vegetative offspring resulting from cuttings
RADIATED RABBITS. Lombardy rabbits must be destroyed, the government has ordered. At least all of the ones that grazed on grass contaminated by fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Giuseppe
