Fungi of the genus Termitomyces (Basidiomycota) are cultivated by termite species of the subfamily Macrotermitinae (Isoptera). The fungus provides food for the termites and helps them degrade plant material. Not much is known about the origin of the symbiosis and the evolutionary history of Termitomyces. By studying the biology, ecology and phylogeny of fungi related to Termitomyces, but not associated with termites, I hope to reconstruct how the symbiosis could arise and whether the ancestor of Termitomyces had pre-adaptations to be domesticated by termites. Preliminary results indicate that the sister group of Termitomyces also has an association insect, but in a loose sense. ...
4; SD = 4.4). 4. Discussion. The results of this study indicated seasonal differences in the diet of Physalaemus cf. cicada. These differences can be related not only to the prey availability, but also to the changes in the composition of the community of active anurans. In both seasons, P. cf. cicada presented a diet based mainly on Isoptera and Formicidae. In the rainy season, the number of termites found in gastrointestinal tracts was smaller than in the dry season, probably due to their lower availability in the environment, and due to the presence of B. granulosus in the same season, since this species also consumed the same kind of food in large amounts. Furthermore, we found a significative positive correlation between the individual size of P. cf. cicada and maximum volume of consumed prey only in the rainy season.. Formicidae presented the largest abundance in the environment, but the frequency of occurrence and the numeric frequency were proportionally small when compared to their ...
The ability of Cryptotermes secundus workers to develop into neotenic replacement reproductives after a single moult offers the unique possibility to study differential gene expression during caste differentiation. In this study, we compared the transcriptomes from female neotenics and workers of both gender using RDA to identify novel neotenics-specific transcripts.. We were able to identify five genes that were highly overrepresented in female neotenics of the drywood termite C. secundus. Four of these five genes were overexpressed in the head. Expression of the genes Neofem1 and Neofem2 of C. secundus was highly specific for female reproductives. Both genes are predicted to encode secretory proteins that are specifically expressed in the heads of female neotenics. The open reading frame of Neofem1 encodes a putative esterase-lipase which shows the highest similarity to yet uncharacterized proteins of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and the honey bee Apis mellifera which are putative ...
Treat all of houses wood with a sodium borate Yes, all of the wood should be treated with a sodium borate. What they recommended is fine if all you get is subterranean termites, but there are drywood termites in the area, as well as several species of wood-destroying beetles. Most companies just treat the bottom few feet because all they need is a hand sprayer for that. There are companies that have the necessary equipment to treat all the wood in the house. Either of these will protect the wood for many years from being attacked by any wood-destroying insects, including termites, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants and carpenter bees. In New Zealand, it has been required since 1954 that all wood used in homes be treated with a sodium borate before installation. Is there an easier and safer way of dealing with these destructive pests? Have your home treated with XT-2000 Orange Oil. With XT-2000, they will use the same amount of product for the beetles, so the cost will be considerably less and
Abstract: Bacterial strains isolated from the gut of the local termite Coptotermes curvignathus were inoculated into a buffered medium containing minerals and Whatman filter paper as the sole carbon source to observe the ability of the bacteria to digest solid substrate. The bacteria were Bacillus cereus strain Razmin A, Enterobacter aerogenes strain Razmin B, Enterobacter cloacae strain Razmin C, Acinetobacter strain Raminalimon and Chryseobacterium kwangyangense strain Cb. The Gen Bank NCBI/EMBL accession numbers for the bacterial strains were EU294508, EU305608, EU305609, EU332791 and EU169201, respectively. The ability of bacterial cultures to grow in this medium as well as to digest the filter paper was determined by visual observation after 30 days. All bacterial cultures showed growth as the medium turned cloudy and the filter paper became macerated. Chryseobacterium kwangyangense strain Cb showed yellow pigmented colonies on the filter paper. Bacillus cereus strain Razmin A showed clumps ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Intracolonial genetic variation affects reproductive skew and colony productivity during colony foundation in a parthenogenetic termite. AU - Miyazaki, Satoshi. AU - Yoshimura, Miho. AU - Saiki, Ryota. AU - Hayashi, Yoshinobu. AU - Kitade, Osamu. AU - Tsuji, Kazuki. AU - Maekawa, Kiyoto. PY - 2014/1/1. Y1 - 2014/1/1. N2 - Background: In insect societies, intracolonial genetic variation is predicted to affect both colony efficiency and reproductive skew. However, because the effects of genetic variation on these two colony characteristics have been tested independently, it remains unclear whether they are affected by genetic variation independently or in a related manner. Here we test the effect of genetic variation on colony efficiency and reproductive skew in a rhinotermitid termite, Reticulitermes speratus, a species in which female-female pairs can facultatively found colonies. We established colonies using two types of female-female pairs: colonies founded by sisters (i.e., ...
The observation of C. tuberosus nests indicated that nests are headed by single pairs of primary reproductives or by neotenic reproductives together with one or both primary reproductives. The comparison of the F-statistics and relatedness coefficients under several simulated breeding systems [13] with the coefficients estimated for C. tuberosus indicated that nests are initiated by a single pair of outbred primary reproductives, and for nests in which mating occurs among primary king and multiple neotenics, neotenics descend from the primary queen. The lack of isolation by distance among nests suggests that new nests are initiated by winged queens and kings after large dispersal flights. Moreover, C. tuberosus displayed genetic differentiation among nests within sampled sites and between regions (i.e. area of Petit Saut and Kaw-Roura National Nature Reserve), but not between sites. This suggests that primary reproductives of C. tuberosus may disperse largely at distances greater than the ...

Most think of termites as destroying buildings, not helping design them. But the Eastgate Building, an office complex in Harare, Zimbabwe, has an air conditioning system modeled on the self-cooling mounds of macrotermes michaelseni. Termites in Zimbabwe build gigantic mounds inside of which they farm a fungus that is their primary food source. The fungus must be kept at exactly 87 degrees F, while the temperatures outside range from 35 degrees F at night to 104 degrees F during the day. The termites achieve this remarkable feat by constantly opening and closing a series of heating and cooling vents throughout the mound over the course of the day. With a system of carefully adjusted convection currents, air is sucked in at the lower part of the mound, down into enclosures with muddy walls, and up through a channel to the peak of the termite mound. The industrious termites constantly dig new vents and plug up old ones in order to regulate the temperature ...
The harvester termite, Anacanthotermes ubachi Navas (Hodotermitidea) occurs throughout the desert regions of Israel. This species nests in subsurface galleries where dead plant material, the termites main food source, and feces are stored. We measured potential net nitrogen (N) mineralization and nitrification and soil respiration in 7-day laboratory incubations of plant litter at different stages of termite processing, termite feces and termite gallery soil (carton) following wetting. Our objectives were (1) to characterize the amount of potential N release from termite-affected plant and soil materials, (2) to evaluate the potential for leaching of N from the galleries and (3) to make a preliminary evaluation of the importance of termites to the carbon (C) and N cycles of the Negev desert. Two distinct phases were seen in the dynamics of inorganic N during the 7 day incubations: (1) release of N following wetting and (2) immobilization of N from day 1 to day 7 of the incubation. The percent ...

Genes encoding allatostatin CC (AST-CC) were discovered relatively recently following a search of various arthropod genomes (Veenstra, 2009). The gene encoding AST-CC is a paralog of the allatostatin C (AST-C) gene. Both these genes are homologous to the vertebrate somatostatins. Interestingly, AST-CC encoding precursors have a signal anchor instead of the N-terminal signal peptide in several arthropods including Drosophila, tsetse flies, Zootermopsis nevadensis and Procambarus clarkii (Veenstra, 2015). Thus, AST-CC may function in a juxtacrine manner as opposed to an endocrine or paracrine factor in these species. However, AST-CC precursors in other species such as Tribolium castaneum, Rhodnius prolixus and Apis mellifera have a classical signal peptide. Like AST-C, arthropod AST-CCs contains two cysteine residues, which suggests that the peptide becomes cyclized by a disulfide bridge. In T. castaneum, there is a single somatostatin-like GPCR, which is activated by both AST-C and AST-CC; ...

Amphiscirpus is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the sedge family containing the single species Amphiscirpus nevadensis, which is known by the common name Nevada bulrush. This plant was formerly included in genus Scirpus. It is native to western North America, including the western Canadian provinces and the northwestern United States, as well as southern South America. It grows in wet and seasonally wet habitat, often on saline and alkaline soils. It is a perennial herb growing from a small, hard rhizome. The erect stems are stiff, ridged, and cylindrical, not three-angled. It lacks aerenchyma, a trait which makes it different from many of its relatives. The stems are sheathed by tough long leaves. The inflorescence is a headlike cluster of a few cone-shaped spikelets accompanied by a long, stiff bract which looks like an extension of the stem ...
Atmosphere and CO2 levels are exchanged via many thousands of millimeter-sized external windows, of sorts, in the mounds outer wall. The termites have been designed with the ability to frequently open and close these tiny windows, based upon outside breezes and CO2 accumulation in the nest. But it wouldnt be any good-or it may even be counterproductive-for termites to randomly open and close the windows. The numerous termites must all operate as a unit-a superorganism. Did such environmentally-induced behavior come about by time and chance, or plan and purpose ...

The Merit label I saw carried no warnings about bees even though there is no question that a sufficiently large dose of Immidacloprid is known to kill honeybees. This fact is not in any dispute. The question really is whether there are low, sub-lethal doses that do kill the bees. Bayer says there is no proof of this. They cannot find any traces of the stuff in the dead bees. (Actually, they cannot even find the bees.) Consider, however, the following. The graphic on the Merit label illustrates how the product travels up from the roots into the branches. Bayer claims (and studies confirm) that it is present in blossoms and pollen and that it persists in the soil for at least one year. So the bees do get some of it. If it will kill a really tough Japanese Beetle for 12 months is it really sensible to think that it wouldnt kill a honeybee, known to be sensitive to the drug? Consider also Bayers own account of how termites are killed by Imidacloprid: the termites immune system is compromised by ...
Textile industry represents one prevalent activity worldwide, generating large amounts of highly contaminated and rich in azo dyes wastewater, with severe effects on natural ecosystems and public health. However, an effective and environmentally friendly treatment method has not yet been implemented, while concurrently, the increasing demand of modern societies for adequate and sustainable energy supply still remains a global challenge. Under this scope, the purpose of the present study was to isolate promising species of yeasts inhabiting wood-feeding termite guts, for combined azo dyes and textile wastewater bioremediation, along with biodiesel production. Thirty-eight yeast strains were isolated, molecularly identified and subsequently tested for desired enzymatic activity, lipid accumulation, and tolerance to lignin-derived metabolites. The most promising species were then used for construction of a novel yeast consortium, which was further evaluated for azo dyes degradation, under various culture

Nature abounds with structures built by animals other than humans, or animal architecture, as it is commonly termed, such as termite mounds, wasp and beehives, burrow complexes of rodents, beaver dams, elaborate nests of birds, and webs of spiders. Often, these structures incorporate sophisticated features such as ventilation, temperature regulation, structural strength, multiple escape routes, traps, bait, special-purpose chambers and many other features. They may be created by individuals or complex societies of social animals with different forms carrying out specialised roles. These constructions may arise from complex building behaviour of animals such as in the case of night-time nests for chimpanzees, from inbuilt neural responses, which feature prominently in the construction of bird songs, or triggered by hormone release as in the case of domestic sows, or as emergent properties from simple instinctive responses and interactions, as exhibited by termites, or combinations of these. The ...
Jesus had a full share in our human nature (Heb 2:14). He is truly and fully man. That Jesus, the Word, became flesh (Jn 1:14) is the most shocking event in the history of the human race. Bishop Sheen said that the difference between a human being and an amoeba is much less than the difference between God and man. Therefore, if a human being emptied himself of his humanity (see Phil 2:7) and became an amoeba, this would not be nearly as extreme as God becoming man.. Imagine you could become a termite and become a brother or sister to some other termites. Jesus refusal to be ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters (Heb 2:11; see also 2:17) may be as shocking as His Incarnation.. Finally, Jesus decided to give Himself to us under the appearance of human food and drink, that is, bread and wine. If you had the power to appear as amoeba food or termite food, would you do such a thing? Jesus incarnate, Brother Jesus, eucharistic Jesus is unimaginably shocking. Because God is Love (1 Jn 4:16), ...
Neoteny in humans is the slowing or delaying of body development, compared to non-human primates, resulting in features such as a large head, a flat face, and relatively short arms and legs. These neotenic changes may have been brought about by sexual selection in human evolution. In turn, they may have permitted the development of human capacities such as emotional communication. However, humans also have relatively large noses and long legs, both peramorphic (not neotenic) traits. In humans, neotenic traits include several features of the head, including the globular skull thinness of skull bones; the reduction of the brow ridge; the large brain; the flattened and broadened face; the hairless face; hair on (top of) the head; larger eyes; ear shape; small nose; small teeth; and the small maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw). Neoteny of the human body is indicated by glabrousness (hairless body). Neoteny of the genitals is marked by the absence of a baculum (penis bone); the presence of ...

A more recent example of this manifestation of biomimicry is the Eastgate Centre, a commercial building constructed in Harare, Zimbabwe. Began in 1991, the project was given by the Old Mutual investment group to Mick Pearce, a Zimbabwean architect, with the intention of it becoming the largest of its kind in the country. With this, however, came the problem of paying large amounts of money in order to provide ventilation for all of its 55000 square meters. Thus, it was up to Pearce to figure out how to do so while utilizing inert, sustainable climate control. Teaming up with Arup Associates, the solution came to him in the form of a system modelled after the ventilation produced in the mounds of Macrotermes michaelseni, termites found in his country. Sheltering a sizeable number of termites, along with other organisms such as fungi, a mound was usually very large, much taller than the insects that constructed it, so as to ensure its being able to reach the wind. The air was then able to pass ...

We retraced or route past Hopefield and shortly after Koperfontein we turned left to Moorreesburg. On that stretch of road we had an excellent view of the ancient termite mounds or heuweltjies that give the fields such a lumpy appearance. These mounds were already alluded to by the 18th century Astronomer and Geodesist, Nicolas-Louis De La Caille. Go here to read the section in Dr. Ian Glasss book on De la Caille. For a more recent and scientific coverage of the topic you can go here to read an article published by the Department of Soil Science at the University of Stellenbosch. We passed through Moorreesburg which considers itself the heart of the Swartland wheat industry and actually boasts a wheat industry museum, one of only three in the world.. We then headed for the twin towns of Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel. Just outside the former we passed the cement factory of PPC (Pretoria Portland Cement) where one can visit the restored house in which General Jan Christian Smuts was born. ...
Theres a hefty hum to Winklers installation, which shares the gallery space with a lighter solo show by Nara Park. Winklers works each contribute some motion to the overall room-feel; as a complete environment, Homesteading accomplishes more than its constituent parts-perhaps the same way that Charles Rays enigmatic sculptures always work better together than they do apart. Taken individually, though, Winklers works are each too indebted to his forebears. Parks exhibit, Between Millions of Years, is also a trio. (Or possibly a quartet, although Fragment I and Fragment II, two textured wall plates made of wood, read like a diptych.) The centerpiece of her show is the title work, Between Millions of Years, an installation comprising hundreds of transparent packing boxes stacked up as the orderly walls of a crystal cave. Using fugitive materials such as plastic cake boxes is a move right out of Tara Donovans playbook. (See Donovans termite mounds of index cards on view at the ...
The black, or black-mouthed, mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) inhabits rocky savanna and can often be encountered on the ground, where it seems to be fond of termite mounds. Ranging in color from gray to dark brown, its name derives from the blackened inside of its mouth. The black mamba is feared because it is large and quick, and it possesses an extremely potent venom that kills of most of its human victims. Despite its aggressive reputation, unprovoked attacks on humans have not been proved, and it is responsible for only a small number of deaths annually.. ...
In the Sahara, where it is expectedly very hot, they hunt at night and at dawn. While in the Serengeti they tend to fit their hunting in around the hunting times of the lions and hyenas. In the Masai Mara, the preferred times for hunting are between 7.30 am and 10 am in the morning and 4.30 pm and 7.30 pm in the afternoon and evening.. The other top predators such as the lion and cheetah are more aggressive than the cheetah and a threat. Cheetah keep a watch for these animals from, for example, termite mounds (see top picture). Watching can occupy 20% of the day (Masai Mara).. As is the case for the other big cats, the cheetah needs to get as close as possible to the prey before attacking. The stalking segment is important because if the prey are alerted and disperse during stalking the hunt fails almost 75% of the time.. Despite the fungal abundance in honey and bee bread, little is known about the fungal gut community of the honey bee and its effect on host fitness. Using pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS2 region amplicons, we analysed the bacterial and fungal gut communities of the honey bee as affected by the host social status. Both communities were significantly affected by the host social status. The bacterial gut community was similar to those characterised in previous studies. The fungal gut communities of most worker bees were highly dominated by Saccharomyces but foraging bees and queens were colonised by diverse fungal species and Zygosaccharomyces, respectively. The high fungal density and positive correlation between Saccharomyces species and Lactobacillus species, known yeast antagonists, were only observed in the nurse bee; this suggested that the conflict between Saccharomyces and Lactobacillus was compromised by the metabolism of the host and/or other gut microbes. PICRUSt analysis revealed
1. The effects of injection of (a) Schockaerts extract of anterior pituitary, (b) Van Dyke & Wallen-Lawrences phyone and (c) prolactin, upon the growth of larval neotenic Amblystoma tigrinum, have been investigated. The normal growthrate was established before injections were begun and controls were injected with muscle extract.. 2. The dosage adopted in all cases was equivalent to 1 mg. of fresh tissue per gram of axolotl per day. This was probably supramaximal.. 3. Schockaerts extract and phyone caused a marked increase in the rate of growth, prolactin a slight increase.. 4. Of the ten animals injected with Schockaerts extract, all except one showed some of the signs usually associated with metamorphosis in A. tigrinum. The other experimental animals did not.. 5. In no case were there any abnormal changes in the bodily proportions or in the shape of the skeleton.. 6. The growth of half the animals after injections had been stopped was also investigated. In the case of most of the animals ...
We called Pacific Coast Termite to have an inspection done. They scheduled an inspection appointment for two days later. Robert S, their termite inspector came out and performed the inspection. Under the house, the attic, the eaves, anywhere he could find. He spent roughly 3 hours to make sure every area was thoroughly checked. He located two hot spots where main sill beams needed partial replacement and some other areas of concern. He provided us a full written report with 24 hours with a detailed drawing of every location that needed attention, and the type of termite causing the damages. We hired them and the appointment was scheduled within a week. Mark G. and John arrived on time and began discussing the work with us in detail. The answered any questions we had and began work promptly. They basically spent the entire day performing a very thorough application of orange oil in the hot spots and the boric acid/salt product that gets spray foamed on any exposed wood surfaces under the ...
While this creature sounds very much like a reptile, it is, in fact, a mammal called the pangolin. There are seven species of pangolins scattered through Africa and Asia. Typically, the female pangolin will give birth to a single young one after a 140-day gestation period. When full grown, the young one, like its parents, will be almost two feet long and weigh about 20 pounds. In addition to using its tail for defense, it can also spray a bad-smelling liquid like a skunk. If all else fails, it can roll into a tight armored ball. Its feeding behavior is similar to a nocturnal anteater. The pangolins highly developed sense of smell can actually sniff out ant and termite mounds. When it finds a nest, it uses its long, sticky tongue to collect a meal. Unfortunately, the endangered pangolin is prized as a delicacy as well as a medicine among the hill tribes where it lives. Lions and tigers also feed on pangolins.. Pangolins are another example of Gods unlimited creativity and His power and wisdom ...
Type species: Libellula erythraea Brullé, 1832. Introduction. Eight species occur from Africa, across Eurasia, to Australia, of which five are found in continental Africa and one is endemic to Madagascar. The African species are medium-sized (hindwing 23-33 mm), have limited black markings (notably absent on legs), and mature males are often largely red. They may spend long periods away from water, being reproductively inactive, and are then duller, e.g. orange, brown or greyish. C. erythraea is Africas most widespread odonate, found at any open habitat, and is rapidly expanding in Europe. Unlike other African Crocothemis, it does not often perch flat on vertical surfaces such as rocks, walls, termite mounds and exposed buttresses. It can be confused with the smaller C. sanguinolenta, but that species favours running water over standing, less often perches on vegetation, typically has small lateral black dashes on abdomen, and pterostigmas generally coloured similarly to abdomen, i.e. red with ...

Fumigation. Fumigation (tenting) has been the only method used for over forty years which insures complete eradication of all drywood termites from a structure. The phase-out of methyl bromide in the U.S. has positioned sulfuryl fluoride (Vikane®) as the leading gas fumigant. Fumigation is a highly technical procedure which involves surrounding the structure with a gas-tight tarpaulin, releasing the gas inside the seal, and aerating the fumigant after a set exposure time. Before fumigation, the homeowner must remove all plants and animals from the house, remove or place food items inside special protective bags, and insure that there is sufficient tarp clearance between sensitive landscaping and exterior walls. The fumigation company may monitor gas concentration during the fumigation to insure that a sufficient dose is maintained. Only after the house has been aerated and tested for absence of fumigant can it be reoccupied. Because the fumigant is a true gas and works as a component of air, ...

In northeastern Brazil, in a forest so dry that the trees blanch bone-white, termites have been busy at work for millennia. The only external signs of their labor are dirt mounds, garbage dumps from their underground excavations. Dirt and garbage normally inspire as much awe as toenail clippings - but these are truly marvelous slag piles. The conical mounds, each about 8 feet tall and 30 feet wide, erupt from the ground at regular intervals, spaced about 60 feet from each of six neighbors.
The ability of termites to eat wood and break the cellulose down into glucose quickly and efficiently have made studying the insects a point of focus for a number of scientists, including Nobel laureate Steven Chu, now Director of the Lawrence Berkeley Labs, who would like to apply that capability...

Sophisticated genomic techniques now allow scientists to estimate the strains, not just the species, in samples of the human guts microbe collection. Differences in the strains of microorganisms present might account for the variable influence the guts microbe community has on human health and disease. Understanding the effects of various strain combinations on such functions as metabolism, immunity and drug reactions might suggest ways to manipulate the gut microbiome to improve health.

Psalm 40:1-11. Fortunately the underlayment was not in bad shape and the termites were abated. Some of you said did we really have to do all that? We really had to do all that. Our trustees have been about this and, thankfully, we have trustees who say were going to do it right and were not going to get in a hurry. Things that you hurry to do seldom work out well and taking the time necessary really paid off.. It was discovered that the - once it all was taken up - termites came in from outside and walked along the cracks and got over in the steps over there, over, under the ramp and up the pole or the post and into the ceiling over there. And between the first two lights you can begin… you can see, if you get under it, you can look up and say, oh yes, termites. So, it was all taken care of. There was a lot of spraying, and I thought that would smell this place up, but it didnt. And now its all underneath and sealed up.. And this is red oak. And it was going to sit for a week and a little ...

Of course the most logical group to study here would be the parabasalians of termite guts. Grosovsky and Margulis 1982 and several papers by Michael Yamin explore the cellulose digesting capabilities of these protists but there is still some discussion as to whether it is the protists themselves doing the breakdown or if it is the associated bacteria. The chapter on Parabasalians in the Handbook of the Protoctista has the full references for these papers. Mark Farmer ...
In Wauja life, there is a permanent and ample presence of extra-human beings who come from the time in which animals were people and could speak. One of the principles on which this presence is based is the unbroken link between the apapaatai/yerupoho and animals, who the Wauja deal with daily, above all through their alimentary system and their theories of sickness and dreaming. In primordial times, total darkness reigned over the world. On the surface of the earth lived the yerupoho, anthropomorphic or zooanthropomorphic beings, and the humans (the ancestors of the Wauja) lived inside termite nests, in absolute want of cultural goods: fire, pans, baskets, foods etc. One day the yerupoho heard it announced that the cultural heroes of the Wauja would make the solar body appear once and for all in the sky. Fearful of the imminent cosmic change, the yerupoho threw themselves into the frenetic work of creating raiments, mask and protective painting against the harmful and irreversible ...
Nylanderia fulva is part of a group of ants referred to as crazy ants due to their quick and erratic movements.. The tawny crazy ant is a medium-small, monomorphic, golden-brown to reddish-brown ant. Workers are 2.0-2.3 mm in length, males are slightly larger (2.4-2.7 mm), and queens are ~4.0 mm or longer (MacGown and Layton 2010). The body surface is smooth and glossy, and covered with dense pubescence (hairs). After feeding, the ants gaster (rear portion of the abdomen) will appear to be striped due to stretching of the light-colored membrane connecting segments of the gaster. Antennae have 12 segments with no club. The antennal scape is nearly twice the width of the head. This ant has one petiolar segment and an acidopore is present at the tip of gaster in place of the stinger. Males have 13-segmented antennae (Zenner-Polania 1990) and both male and female reproductives have three ocelli on top of their head, whereas ocelli are absent in workers. Other than the size of the reproductive ...
Science News has a fascinating short story, Gut bacteria reflect dietary differences, by Gwyneth Dickey, that highlights one of the ecological dimensions of enculturation that I think some symbolic models of culture have a hard time grasping. It turns out that a Western diet produces a less-varied gut ecology in Italian children than was found…
I believe we can resolve this debate with close examination of the examples and scenarios that have been presented so far.. Chimpanzees display what could be considered is the most basic interpretation of a tool; a stem used to withdraw termites from a mound. This activity along with other similar displays has not so far lead to a revolution in chimpanzee tool culture despite the chimpanzees having what would be the most important precursor to any tool making endeavor, a reasonably comparable brain to that of our earlier ancestors and two opposable thumbs. Although we dont know when this termite extraction practice began for chimps, it did not lead to a series of extrapolations of the original idea, but merely the use of any suitable stem being stripped of obstructions. The first tool that the chimps originally utilized was most likely a found item and used as is and then copied through trial and error for generations after.. So, despite having what would seem as a good starting platform ...
