Iris fulva is commonly called copper iris because of the unusual copper color of its flowers. It is a beardless, crestless iris (Louisiana Iris group) that is native to swamps and wetlands of the deep South and of the lower Mississippi Valley from Louisiana north to southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois. In Missouri, it is primarily found in bald cypress swamps, sloughs, ponds, ditches and swampy woodland areas in the southeastern corner of the State (Steyermark). It is often found growing and blooming in standing water in spring-flooded areas that typically dry up as the summer progresses. Terra cotta or copper colored irises appear in late spring atop flower scapes typically growing 2-3 tall. Flowers are reportedly pollinated by hummingbirds. Sword-shaped, linear, bright green leaves. In New Orleans in March of 1821, John James Audubon painted a pair of parula warblers perching on the stem of a copper iris in a painting that became an entry in The Birds of North America ...

To View what will really flourish in his particular garden, instead of breaking his heart over plants that are quite unsuited to his soil and climate, is advice which old gardeners continually find themselves impressing upon the beginner. I am induced to say a few words upon the so-called German Irises, because they are plants so good-natured as to do well in most places - even in town gardens - if treated with a moderate amount of kindness, and, when once planted, left undisturbed. I was told when I began to cultivate these Irises that they were fond of damp, and though I doubted the truth of the statement then, I have no doubt as to its untruth now; mine, at any rate, do best in the dry part of the garden. In damp places, the so-called germanica frequently waste away (that may of course be due to something peculiar in the soil), and are very much disfigured by slugs. I was told, too, that they would grow anywhere, and this is, roughly speaking, true; but they will not flower well unless they ...

Spring may seem like a long way off but in one regard its already here. That would be in the arrival of spring blooming bulbs at your local nursery. There are of course a large variety of tulips, crocus and daffodils but these are just the tip of the iceberg. Spring favorites include fragrant hyacinths, which come in an increasing variety of colors, including a yellow for 2012, sweet smelling freesias and all manner of irises. Dutch irises are always popular and they too are broadening their color spectrum beyond purples and yellows. One of my favorites is Bronze Beauty, which combines bronze and purple tones. Then there are the bearded irises, with larger and more colorful blooms. They can be a bit more finicky but the reward is great. Theres a reason there are bearded iris societies. I can also recommend some less common irises. Start with ensata (Japanese) irises, which feature enormous flowers. Siberian and Louisiana iris offer some fun patterns and are available as corms. Iris pseudacorus ...
Conditions for growing. These plants prefer well-drained sandy neutral or slightly alkaline soil. They prefer hot and sunny areas in the garden, which is dry. When this plant is new to the garden it should be protected from untimely frost and it is better to plant them against a wall or where the iris will receive some shelter from bad weather. Once established the plant is tolerant to drought and needs very little care. This plant requires watering in dry winter conditions and during autumn. Over time when the Iris unguicularis forms thick clumps it will need separating into smaller divisions for replanting. Applying seaweed fertiliser at the start of winter season, this helps in boosting flowering. Flowering increases as the clump becomes older.. Propagation. Propagation is mainly through the division of clumps. The planting of the divisions is done during spring or autumn. Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of the year. After dividing the clump, plant them in flowering positions ...

The genus Thiomargarita includes the worlds largest bacteria. But as uncultured organisms, their physiology, metabolism, and basis for their gigantism are not well understood. Thus a genomics approach, applied to a single Candidatus Thiomargarita nelsonii cell was employed to explore the genetic potential of one of these enigmatic giant bacteria. The Thiomargarita cell was obtained from an assemblage of budding Ca. T. nelsonii attached to a provannid gastropod shell from Hydrate Ridge, a methane seep offshore of Oregon, USA. Here we present a manually curated genome of Bud S10 resulting from a hybrid assembly of long Pacific Biosciences and short Illumina sequencing reads. With respect to inorganic carbon fixation and sulfur oxidation pathways, the Ca. T. nelsonii Hydrate Ridge Bud S10 genome was similar to marine sister taxa within the family Beggiatoaceae. However, the Bud S10 genome contains genes suggestive of the genetic potential for lithotrophic growth on arsenite and perhaps hydrogen. The

Sequence data from nrITS and cpDNA have failed to fully resolve phylogenetic relationships among Pinus species. Four low-copy nuclear genes, developed from the screening of 73 mapped conifer anchor loci, were sequenced from 12 species representing all subsections. Individual loci do not uniformly support either the nrITS or cpDNA hypotheses and in some cases produce unique topologies. Combined analysis of low-copy nuclear loci produces a well-supported subsectional topology of two subgenera, each divided into two sections, congruent with prior hypotheses of deep divergence in Pinus. The placements of P. nelsonii, P. krempfii, and P. contorta have been of continued systematic interest. Results strongly support the placement of P. nelsonii as sister to the remaining members of sect. Parrya, suggest a moderately well-supported and consistent position of P. krempfii as sister to the remaining members of sect. Quinquefoliae, and are ambiguous about the placement of P. contorta. A successful ...

We focus on solitary bees microbiome investigation not only for the identification of pathogens, but also for the identification of other bee-microbe associations such as those of mutualistic partners. We address the question of whether these associations are evolutionary conserved, regardless of the solitary life style which deprives the different species of a closed nurturing system of the larvae and we investigate the possible microbial transmission routes. A culture independent next-generation sequencing investigation of solitary bee nests has been established to identify and characterize microbial associates in terms of origin and function. These are related to ecological factors bearing in mind the different life styles of different solitary bee species. In the direction of characterizing different taxa as commensal or mutualistic in terms of nutrition and pathogen defense, we design functional bioassays to check culture-isolated bacterial strains for possible fermentative and ...

Citation: Woodside, G.J., Clark, P., Ganskopp, D.C., Vavra, M., Dick, B.L., Wilkinson, M.G., Johnson, D.E. 2009. Velocity of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsonii) grazing a Northeast Oregon pasture. Society for Range Management Meeting Abstracts. Interpretive Summary: Evaluations of range animal behavior and its relation to resource impact have been severely limited by inadequate field methods and out-dated technology. We developed and evaluated GPS tracking systems of advanced technology for monitoring the spatial and temporal aspects of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsonii) behavior while they occupied dry meadow and forested lands on northeastern Oregon. GPS location data collected at 1-second intervals for two herds of cow elk over several week-long trials indicated bedding, foraging and traveling behaviors could be accurately and continuously monitored with the new technology. This technology can be utilized on all moderate or large wild or domestic animals thus providing ...
It is commonly known in the UK as the white flowered iris[14] or in the US as milky iris.[4][15] It is known as majiris, in Sweden.[16] In Ladakhi of Tibet, it is known as Tesmamentok,[4] meaning pale purple flower.[17] The Latin specific epithet Lactea means milky color,[10] hence the common name milky iris. In China, it is written as 白花马蔺 白花马蔺 in Chinese script and known as bai hua ma lin in Pidgin in China.[5][16] It also known as Ma Lin or Malan flower.[18] It was first published and described by Pallas in Reise Russ. Reich (Reise durch Verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs - translated as Travel through various provinces of the Russian Empire) in 1776.[16][19] The taxonomy of this species has been very confused. It was originally named Iris ensata lactea (Thunberg) in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London (page 328) on 1 May 1794 but later Iris ensata was re-classified as Iris kaempferi. Which is now a synonym of Iris ensata (within Iris ...

Iris vicaria is a species in the genus Iris, it is also in the subgenus of Scorpiris. It is a bulbous perennial. It was first published by Alexeï Ivanovitch Vvedenski in Flora URSS (Flora Unionis Rerumpublicarum Sovieticarum Socialisticarum) in 1935. Under the name Juno Vicaria. Iris vicaria is now the accepted name by the RHS. It is very similar in form to Iris magnifica (another Juno species Iris) with pale violet flowers. Around 1930, the Russian Government decided to sell various wild bulbs from its lands, to plant collectors of Europe and other countries. Large quantities of Lilium szovitsianum, various tulip species and other bulbs were dug up, transported and sold. A lot of iris bulbs labelled Iris warleyensis were found out to be mis-labeled by American bulb growers. Using Professor Fedtschenkos book, Species of Wild Flowers of the U.S.S.R. they were found out to be Iris vicaria. It is hardy to USDA Zone 6. It prefers to be cultivated in well-drained (including sandy) soils ...
