AU - Fischer, H. W.. PY - 1986. Y1 - 1986. N2 - Hypotension and bradycardia are the most significant cardiovascular responses resulting from intracarotid injections of hypertonic contrast media (CM). We have assessed both local and systemic vascular responses to the selective intracarotid injections of ionic and non-ionic CM in twelve pentobarbital anesthetized dogs. Alterations in blood pressure, heart rate, and femoral, renal and carotid blood flows were monitored following right common carotid artery injections of ionic contrast media (282-288 mg I/ml), isotonic saline, and iohexol (300 mg I/ml). Ionic CM led to early (0 to 10 s) decreases in blood pressure, heart rate and femoral vascular resistance. Isotonic saline induced no significant early changes in these same parameters while iohexol caused a decrease ...
Aim: To identify contrast induced nephropathy with intravenous iso-osmolar contrast media in renal failure patients with additional comorbidities undergoing computed tomography. Study design: Hospital based observational study. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 207 patients with pre-existing renal failure and comorbidities. In this study we collected pre-contrast creatinine values available within 3 weeks and post-contrast creatinine value was collected on 2nd and 5th day following CM injection in order to check early and late contrast induced nephropathy (CIN). Rate of CIN with and without comorbid conditions in CKD patients were calculated. Then we assessed the incidence of CIN with different amount of CM administered. We also calculated the relation of CIN with pre-contrast creatinine and eGFR range, which was categorized as 1.4- 2.0 mg/dL, 2.0-3.0 mg/dL and ,3 mg/dL and ,60ml and ,60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 respectively. Results: Rate of CIN was relatively higher in renal failure ...

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating disease that is the result of degradation of articular cartilage and calcification of the ends of long bones. This debilitating disease seriously affects the economy, raising the aggregate annual medical care expenditures by $185.5 billion and forcing many people into early retirement. This form of arthritis is the fastest growing cause of disability worldwide and studies have predicted that by the year 2032 the proportion of the population over the age of 45 and afflicted by the disease will reach 29.5 percent. In this experiment, imaging by micro-CT 50 was used to analyze the chondyles of murine femora in order to examine the effect of a novel, positively charged contrast agent, CA4+. The cationic nature of the contrast agent allows it several advantages over current, anionic contrast agents, and enhanced imaging techniques would allow for a better understanding of the etiopathology of the disease. This experiment was a technique establishing experiment ...
In clinical arthrographic examination, strong hypertonic contrast agents are injected directly into the joint space. This may reduce the stiffness of articular cartilage, which is further hypothesized to lead to overload-induced cell death. We investigated the cell death in articular cartilage while the tissue was compressed in situ in physiological saline solution and in full strength hypertonic X-ray contrast agent Hexabrix(TM). Samples were prepared from bovine patellae and stored in Dulbeccos Modified Eagles Medium overnight. Further, impact tests with or without creep were conducted for the samples with contact stresses and creep times changing from 1 MPa to 10 MPa and from 0 min to 15 min, respectively. Finally, depth-dependent cell viability was assessed with a confocal microscope. In order to characterize changes in the biomechanical properties of cartilage as a result of the use of Hexabrix™, stress-relaxation tests were conducted for the samples immersed in Hexabrix™ and ...

A method of deriving blood perfusion indices for a region of interest (ROI) of a subject, comprising the steps of administering a contrast agent to the subject during a dynamic imaging scan, converting signal intensity data from raw images of the scan into contrast agent concentration data, deriving parameters from the contrast agent concentration data using at least one transport function that accounts for delay and dispersion of the contrast agent, and calculating the blood perfusion indices from the derived parameters.
This study has measured the longitudinal and transverse (T2* relaxivity curves for ProHance (Gadoteridol), Vasovist (Gadofosveset) and deoxyhemoglobin at 1.5, 3.0, and 7.0 Tesla. The plots of R(1) versus both contrast agent and deoxyhemoglobin concentration were linear. The plots of R2* versus deoxyhemoglobin concentration showed a quadratic dependence. R2* versus contrast agent concentration showed a parabolic dependence with a minimum occurring at contrast agent concentrations of approximately 1.5 mM, corresponding to an accessible concentration in vivo. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to support the hypothesis that the minimum results from the susceptibility of the red blood cells being matched to the susceptibility of the plasma. Relaxivity values (s(-1)mM(-1)) for R2* and R1 for all agents and all three field strengths are given.

The x-ray attenuation values of brain studied with computed tomography (CT) are strikingly affected by the ages of the subjects. Premature neonates, for example, may have brain attenuation values 20-30 H below adult values. These lower attenuation values for developing compared with adult brain can be ascribed partly to machine-related effects (beam-hardening, adult algorithms, scanning geometry, etc.). A scanning phantom made from aluminum was developed that can be used to develop a nomogram for any particular scanner from which normalized brain attenuation may be derived for any small head size. Using this nomogram, predicted neonatal attenuations are still 10-15 H higher than those actually observed in scanning neonates. The model predicts that, at the most, 3-4 H of this discrepancy can be accounted for by less beam-hardening from the lower bone attenuation of the thinner developing skull. Presumably, the rest is from a lower brain density in neonates (higher water content). By normalizing ...
The membrane is expensive, yet fragile. It plays a crucial role as it removes nitrates, silicates, phosphates, and other compounds to produce pure water. There are several types of membranes which can be used in reverse osmosis units.. The most frequently used membrane is the Thin Film Composite (TFC) membrane. The membranes top layer is permeable to water and impermeable to various dissolved impurities including salt ions and other small, unfilterable molecules. The water molecules that pass through the membrane are sent to the storage tank. The water which is not forced through the membrane will be sent to a drain.. De-ionization. Most units also have de-ionization as the last stage. In de-ionization, there are two types of synthetic resins used to remove positively charged ions and negatively charged ions. Cation de-ionization resins remove cations such as calcium, magnesium and sodium and replace them with the hydrogen ions. Whereas, anion de-ionization resins remove negatively charged ...

Radiocontrast agents are substances used to enhance the visibility of internal structures in X-ray-based imaging techniques such as computed tomography (contrast CT), projectional radiography, and fluoroscopy. Radiocontrast agents are typically iodine, barium-sulphate or gadolinium based compounds. They absorb external X-rays, resulting in decreased exposure on the X-ray detector. This is different from radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine which emit radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) functions through different principles and thus utilizes different contrast agents. These compounds work by altering the magnetic properties of nearby hydrogen nuclei. Radiocontrast agents used in X-ray examinations can be grouped based on its use. Iodine-based contrast media are usually classified as ionic or non-ionic. Both types are used most commonly in radiology due to their relatively harmless interaction with the body and its solubility. Contrast media are primarily used to visualize ...

Authors: Hardeman, M.R. , Goedhart, P.T. Article Type: Research Article Abstract: The in vitro hemorheological effects of three new, so called low osmolar, radio-contrast media (CM) were compared. Two of the CM were non-ionic compounds, Iohexol and Iopamidol, the third one was the ionic dimer Ioxaglate. Their osmolalities varied from 574 to 679 mosmol/kg. with viscosities from 4.8 to 7.5 mPa.s. Red blood cell (RBC) aggregation (syllectometry and calCulation of the aggregation factor, AF), RBC deformability (ektacytometry and calculation of the Taylor factor, Tk), plasma viscosity as well as low and high shear viscosity of various blood-CM mixtures were measured. Changes in these parameters, induced by various grades of dilution and/or …hyperosmolality were related to changes in morphological parameters, found in an earlier, comparable study. It was shown that, in contrast to both non-ionic CM and despite its own hyperosmolality, Ioxaglate had no effect on RBC morphology and caused less ...
Recent advances in MRI have enabled the quantitative assessment of articular cartilage morphology in human joints. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the precision of quantitative shoulder cartilage measurements is sufficient to detect changes between and within patients, and that shoulder cartilage thickness in paraplegic patients increases due to increased loading. We imaged the shoulders of seven healthy volunteers four times using a coronal 3D, fat-suppressed, gradient-echo sequence. The humeral head cartilage in seven paraplegic patients was evaluated soon after injury and 1 year post injury. A precision of 4.5% (root mean square (RMS) average coefficient of variation (CV) %) was found for shoulder cartilage thickness measurements in the humeral head. Whereas a significant decrease of cartilage thickness (-11%, P , 0.05) was observed in the knee, there was no significant change in articular cartilage thickness in the shoulder (-1.1%). Our data show, for the first time, that ...
Cartilage is a tissue that is critical for skeletal function, yet its study has been limited by a lack of quantitative, non-destructive, three-dimensional imaging techniques that enable simultaneous interrogation of both bone and cartilage. Recently, methods of contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (CECT) have been developed that exploit the electrostatic interactions between ionic contrast agents and negatively charged glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in cartilage, thus providing information about the composition and morphology of cartilage that was previously only available via destructive methods. The goal of this dissertation project was to apply CECT, a non-destructive, three-dimensional imaging method, to understand the how the morphology and composition of cartilage changes in response to injury and disease. First, CECT was applied to a model of growth plate injury to quantify changes to the cartilaginous tissue of the growth plate and formation of bone bridges within this tissue in ...

3) with the assumption that the large and small vessel Hcts are equal.12. Strictly, recirculation effects should be recognized and removed from the curves. In reality, unless there is significant BBB permeability or areas of very low flow, recirculation effects may be ignored and actually lead to improved estimates of plasma volume that are less sensitive to contrast agent delivery rates (ie, CBF). In low-flow regions, if the tracer does not complete its first passage within the time given for the measurement (usually about 25-30 seconds), it will be undercounted and vp will be underestimated. Because of this result, some authors writing about ischemia have used the term perfused CBV.13 This may account for the discrepancies seen in between PWI and C15O PET estimates of CBV in ischemia.14 In fact, in the extreme, one would prefer to image as late after injection as possible; when the contrast agent concentration is changing slowly, it more closely approximates a steady-state or blood pool ...

Signals from the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have typically been considered to provide catabolic activities in articular cartilage, and accordingly have been suggested to have a causal role in osteoarthritis progression. The aim of this study was to determine in vivo roles for endogenous EGFR signal activation in articular cartilage. Transgenic mice with conditional, limb-targeted deletion of the endogenous intracellular EGFR inhibitor Mig-6 were generated using CreLoxP (Mig-6-flox; Prx1Cre) recombination. Histology, histochemical staining and immunohistochemistry were used to confirm activation of EGFR signaling in the articular cartilage and joints, and to analyze phenotypic consequences of Mig-6 loss on articular cartilage morphology, proliferation, expression of progenitor cell markers, presence of chondrocyte hypertrophy and degradation of articular cartilage matrix. The articular cartilage of Mig-6-conditional knockout (Mig-6-cko) mice was dramatically and significantly thicker than
We studied the incidence and risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) following coronary angiography (CA) and examined short- and long-term outcomes of patients who developed AKI, including progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This was a retrospective study of all patients undergoing CA in Iceland from 2008 to 2015, with or without percutaneous coronary intervention. All procedures were performed with iso-osmolar contrast. AKI was defined according to the SCr component of the KDIGO criteria. Patients without post-procedural SCr were assumed to be free of AKI. Incident CKD was defined as 90-day sustained estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) , 60 mL/min/1.73 m AKI was detected in 231 of 13,561 cases (1.7%). There was an interaction between contrast dose and preexisting kidney function, where the risk for AKI was only significant at a dose , 150 mL in patients with baseline eGFR , 45 mL/min/1.73 m For iso-osmolar contrast, the risk of AKI related to contrast dose was evident for ...

Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) is an X-ray imaging technique that produces highresolution 3D computerised virtual models of geological specimens based on the X-ray attenuation of different materials in the specimen. The virtual specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels, each assigned a gray value based on X-ray absorption. Micro-CT has enormous potential for allowing non-destructive, digital analysis of structure and composition when the mineralogical phases can be digitally separated. However, variation in X-ray flux between scans results in highly variable grayscale values for identical materials. Consequently, materials usually have to be segmented manually, which is subjective, inaccurate, labour-intensive and time consuming. Here we present a protocol and imaging software package that can be used to accurately and precisely extract quantifiable information in a repeatable and objective fashion. The energy selective measurement capabilities of these devices open the doors to many exciting directions in CT research across a number of fields including security applications. Over the past year our work under ALERT support has been directed at the continued development of tensor-based, iterative algorithms that simultaneously reconstruct the X-ray attenuation distribution in space across a range of energies. This approach has allowed for the design of a number of regularization methods built on low rank assumptions on the multi-spectral unknown. The first approach we developed was based on the use of a nuclear norm penalty in each of the three so-called unfoldings of the tensor. The second method, developed in the past year, makes use of the tensor singular value decomposition (tSVD) developed in [1]. In all cases, ...
