Body weights, food and fluid intake of both lesioned and (sham-operated or intact) control animals were daily measured. Effects of intracellular dehydration ...
Transdermal iontophoresis as an in-vivo technique for studying microvascular physiology
Assessment of microvascular function is of major importance in understanding the physiology of the vasculature and in investigating the vascular effects of pathological conditions. Transdermal iontophoresis can be used to non-invasively introduce vasoactive drugs into the skin. The response of the local cutaneous microvasculature to these drugs can be measured by methods such as laser Doppler flowmetry. Although the technique has been used for over two decades, there are still important methodological issues to be resolved. This review describes the technique of iontophoresis as well as its development during recent years, while focusing on how iontophoresis can be used as an in-vivo model for studying physiologic mechanisms and on the analysis and interpretation of dose-response data.. ...
Patente US4915685 - Methods and apparatus for iontophoresis application of medicaments at a ... - Google Patentes
Methods and apparatus for administering known quantities of medicaments by iontophoresis, while avoiding burns caused by extremes in the pH of the medicament medium during passage of an electric current, are disclosed. It is known that as iontophoresis progresses in conventional iontophoresis systems, the electrolysis of water occurs to produce hydrogen or hydroxyl ions at the interface of the electrode and medicament medium. Since these ions are highly mobile, they are transported directly into the skin of a patient in preference to the larger medicament ions. Thus, extreme changes in pH are experienced which result in burns due to the acidificaion or alkalinization of the medicament medium and passage of electric current through the skin. In addition, the efficiency of iontophoresis decreases over time. The present invention avoids extremes in pH by removing the hydrogen or hydroxyl ions which are created during iontophoresis and creates conditions for constant delivery over prolonged periods of time.

ISRCTN - ISRCTN34571027: Efficacy and safety of iontophoresis in patients with age-related cataract
Cataracts are cloudy patches that develop in the lens of your eye and can cause blurred or misty vision. In many cases, cataracts are age-related, appearing first when a person is in his or her 40s or 50s, but not affecting vision until after age 60. Cataract surgery is the only treatment available while medical treatment is often provided but has proven to be not very effective. A safe and effective new technique is needed to improve patients vision, especially for those with mild and moderate cataracts. Iontophoresis is a non-invasive technique in which a small electric current is applied to increase drug penetration into the tissues. The advantages are that it is easy to use and there are no systemic side effects. Based on the principle of iontophoresis, Suzhou Liu Liuliu Vision Science and Technology Co. developed a method to deliver traditional Chinese medicine with the iontophoresis device. Early results show that vision is improved after 4 weeks application of the treatment. The device ...

Ruthenium (Ru) complexes have been studied as promising anticancer agents. Ru nitrosyl complex (Ru-NO) is one which acts as a pro-drug for the release of nitric oxide (NO). The Ru-aqueous complex formed by the exchange of NO for a water molecule after NO release could also possess therapeutic effects. This study evaluates the influence of iontophoresis on enhancing the skin penetration of Ru-NO and Ru-aqueous and assesses its applicability as a tool in treating diverse skin diseases. Passive and iontophoretic (0.5 mA·cm−2) skin permeation of the complexes were performed for 4 h. The amount of Ru and NO in the stratum corneum (SC), viable epidermis (VE), and receptor solution was quantified while the influence of iontophoresis and irradiation on NO release from Ru-NO complex was also evaluated. Iontophoresis increased the amount of Ru-NO and Ru-aqueous recovered from the receptor solution by 15 and 400 times, respectively, as compared to passive permeation. Iontophoresis produced a higher accumulation

All values are expressed as mean ± S.D; n=3 Enhanced iontophoretic transport of drug at pH 7.4 and Long term application of current leads to the 11 may be due to increased ionic mobility caused by 99% dissipation of heat which in turn increase lipid fluidity and ionization of salbutamol at these pH (Table 4). Nernst- thus changes in the integrity of the skin structure (Burnette Plank equation verifies this phenomenon (Swarbrick et al., et al., 1988), with the result permeability of the skin is 1984) and therefore, maximum flux obtained at pH 7.4 altered (Hamann et al., 2006, Delgado-Charro et al., 2001) during anodal iontophoresis at pH 11 during cathodal This may be the reason for increased permeability coefficient of drug during iontophoresis (anodal and cathodal) at all pH compared to the corresponding values When the pH of the donor solution is decreased from pH 11 to 7.4, it results in a higher anodal iontophoretic flux i.e., greater transport of drug at pH 7.4 of donor solution. In the mustached bat, Pteronotus parnellii, noradrenaline (NA) was applied iontophoretically to single units in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus. NA suppressed tonic components of auditory responses and enhanced phasic onset responses to pure tone stimuli. The enhancement of onset activity was most pronounced in awake bats and was due to a decrease in the latency jitter of the first tone-evoked spikes from 0.55 msec in controls to 0.28 msec during NA application. In addition, NA reduced spontaneous neuronal activity. Noradrenergic antagonists suppressed phasic onset activity and increased the latency jitter of onset spikes. Opposite to the effect of NA, the tonic response component increased during application of the beta-antagonist propranolol but decreased during injection of the alpha 1-antagonist corynanthine. Other putative transmitter substances tested, nonselectively depressed both phasic and tonic response components (GABA, glycine) or increased both components either similarly or had ...

Iontophoresis may help if you have excessive sweating that affects your hands or feet. It can also be used to treat armpits, although this is usually less effective.. Iontophoresis involves treating affected areas of skin with a weak electric current passed through water or a wet pad. This is thought to help block the sweat glands.. If your hands and feet need treating, you place them in a bowl of water and a weak electric current is passed through the water. If your armpits need treating, a wet contact pad is placed against each armpit and a current is passed through the pad.. The treatment is not painful but the electric current can cause mild, short-lived discomfort and skin irritation.. Each session of iontophoresis lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, and you will usually need to have two to four sessions a week. Your symptoms should begin to improve after a week or two, after which further treatment will be required at one to four week intervals, depending on how severe your symptoms ...

IDI News » Ultrasound
Ultrasound: A versatile modality that can be used for cleansing, exfoliation or penetration of complexes, masques and moisturizers. Sound waves produce a warming of the tissue and micro vibrations on the surface of the skin, causing tiny gas bubbles known as cavitation. These gaps between epidermal cells, combined with tissue warming, allow for ingredients to penetrate. This is excellent to use around the eye area with a vitamin cream-based masque or a cooling gel masque to help minimize fine lines and signs of dehydration.. • Iontophoresis: Iontophoresis with galvanic current and specific iontophoresis with microcurrent allow water-soluble products to permeate into the skin via electrical current. Both methods produce a calming and vasoconstrictive effect on the skin, while driving active ingredients deeper into the skin. Use the ball head with galvanic current to better target the eye area, and combine it with complexes, serums, or a cooling gel masque to whisk away tired eyes.. • ...

Y1 - 1980/1/27. N2 - Adrenergic receptors in the vicinity of neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the rat were pharmacologically characterized using extracellular single-cell recording and microiontophoretic techniques. Application of norepinephrine (NE) at low iontophoretic currents (1-15 nA) produced a delayed activation of most LGN neurons. This activation was mimicked by various sympathomimetic amines. The relative potency series of agonists was typical of postsynaptic α-adrenergic receptors: epinephrine, NE , phenylephrine ≥ α-methylnorepinephrine , dopamine , isoproterenol. The α-antagonists phentolamine, piperoxane and WB-4101, when applied at low iontophoretic currents (,10 nA), produced a selective, dose-dependent and reversible blockade of the response to NE. Comparing Intravenous Pilocarpine and Carbachol Iontophoresis Stimulated Accommodation in Rhesus Monkeys | IOVS | ARVO Journals
Purpose: : Many studies have used carbachol iontophoresis (CARB-ionto) or topical pilocarpine eye drops to pharmacologically stimulate accommodation in Rhesus monkeys. These methods hinder ocular measurements at the time of drug application, provide inconsistent results, and have a slow time-course. Here, the utility, safety, time-course, stability and repeatability of intravenous pilocarpine (iv-PILO) and CARB-ionto stimulated accommodation are compared. Methods: : Experiments were performed under anaesthesia on 5 previously iridectomized monkeys aged 10 to 16 years. In 3 monkeys, accommodation was stimulated with CARB-ionto in 5 successive experiments and refraction measured with a Hartinger coincidence refractometer. In separate experiments, accommodation was stimulated using a 5 mg/kg bolus of iv-PILO given over 30 seconds followed by a continuous infusion of 20 mg/kg/hr for 5.5 minutes in 3 successive experiments with the same monkeys as well as in single experiments with 2 additional ...
Abstract 11: Physical Therapy Equipment, Supplies & Products - Isokinetics Inc.
We have demonstrated the dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DmNaP) is delivered most efficiently from the negative electrode by iontophoresis, but, under certain conditions, the delivery from the positive electrode by electroosmosis can be accomplished. The laboratory data indicate that more dexamethasone is delivered per mA-min by iontophoresis than by electtoomosis, thus the same amount of drug can be administered in a shorter time from the negative electrode. Electrodes containing a hydrogel material, which restricts bulk water transport, delivered DmNaP most efficiently from the electrode of a negative polarity. When DmNaP is to be delivered in a mixture with another drug such as lidocaine, selection of the clinical treatment protocol depends on the desired therapeutic effect on the iontophoreic electrode which is to be used. When minimization of total treatment time is not critical, switching polarity of the electrode during the treatment can be used to administer drugs of opposite polarity ...
Research Journal of Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Technology
Transdermal delivery of drugs through the skin to the systemic circulation provides a convenient route of administration for a variety of clinical indications. For transdermal delivery of drugs, stratum corneum is the main barrier layer for permeation of drug. This physicochemical constraint severely limits the number of molecules that can be considered as realistic candidates for transdermal delivery. Iontophoresis provides a mechanism to enhance the penetration of hydrophilic and charged molecules across the skin. This technique facilitates movement of ions across a membrane under the influence of an externally applied electric potential difference. The present reviews discuss the basic principle, mechanism, factors affecting and combination strategies of iontophoresis.

Iontophoretic application of unconjugated cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) combined with immunohistochemistry of...
The introduction of HRP as a retrograde tracer by Kristensson and Olsson 27 and La Vail and La Vail 31 has greatly accelerated our knowledge of neuroanatomy. Improvements of the original technique including the use of the more sensitive chromogen TMB 39-42, the microelectrophoretic delivery technique 18 and the introduction of the HRP conjugates with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) 11 17 53 54 57 or cholera toxin (CT-HRP) 53 54 57 have further increased the sensitivity of the technique and permit one to obtain more restricted injection sites. The remarkable increase in the number of putative transmitters has further pointed to the need for methods allowing simultaneous identification of a pathway and its neurochemical identity. For this purpose, the histochemical detection of HRP and its conjugates using DABS 8 9 33 45 or stabilized TMB 46 has been successfully coupled with the immunohistochemistry of neurochemical substances on the same sections. However, such double labeling techniques present ...
Arginine8-vasopressin enhances the responses of lateral septal neurons in the rat to excitatory amino acids and fimbria-fornix...
In the present study we investigated the effect of arginine8-vasopressin (AVP) on responses induced in lateral septal neurons of the rat by iontophoretically administered excitatory and inhibitory amino acids and by synaptical stimuli delivered through fimbria-fornix (fi-fx) fibers. In the majority of the lateral septal neurons, iontophoretically applied AVP induced ... read more a marked increase in the excitatory responses to glutamate, aspartate, quisqualate and N-methyl--aspartate. The responses to excitatory amino acids frequently remained elevated several minutes after termination of the peptide administration. Inhibitory responses induced by GABA were not affected by AVP. The responsiveness of lateral septal single units to fi-fx stimuli was enhanced during iontophoretic administration of AVP. The enhanced responsiveness also appeared from experiments in which topically applied AVP induced a prolonged increase in the negative but not the positive wave of field potentials evoked in the ...

At the end of the day, iontophoresis gives hyperhidrosis patients peace of mind that everything they need to fight sweat is already in their possession.. ...
Scratching and noxious heat stimuli inhibit itch in humans: a psychophysical study - Yosipovitch - 2007 - British Journal of...
Background Patients who suffer from chronic itch employ creative techniques to alleviate their itch, often using painful thermal stimuli, such as hot and very cold showers, as well as mechanical stimuli, such as scratching.. Objectives The present study examined whether the sensory perception of itch is attenuated by remote interactions between both thermal and mechanical stimuli and afferent information related to itch.. Patients and methods Itch was induced with histamine iontophoresis in 21 healthy young subjects. Repetitive thermal stimuli including innocuous warmth, innocuous cool, noxious cold and noxious heat as well as scratching were applied 3-cm distal to the area of histamine iontophoresis. Subjects rated their perceived intensity of histamine-induced itch with a computerized visual analogue scale.. Results Itch intensity ratings were significantly reduced during each period of scratching and repeated noxious heat and cold. Innocuous cooling and warming did not significantly alter ...
