The reaction of glycerol with tert-butyl alcohol in the liquid phase on acid Amberlyst-type ion-exchange resins was studied. The influence of temperature, mole ratio n(TBA)/n(G), water and swelling of gel, and macroreticular type of polymer catalysts on etherification reaction was investigated. The most favourable reaction temperature is 75°C. The conversion of glycerol and yield of glycerol tert-butyl ethers has increased with the mole ratio n(TBA)/n(G). Dry form of macroreticular catalysts provided the best results. Etherification reaction of glycerol with isobutylene in non-aqueous conditions gives the highest yield of desired ethers. The influence of water was studied. The gel forms of ion-exchange resins have very low catalytic activity. It can be concluded that water has an inhibition effect on ion-exchange resins. By comparing the gel and macroreticular forms of Amberlyst ion-exchange resins it can be concluded that very acid forms of macroreticular ion-exchange resins with a high degree ...

Norfloxacin is a common fluoroquinolones antibacterial drug having the bitter taste which hindered its oral administration. Drug resin complex mask the bitter taste of the drug and hence an attempt has been made in the present study to prepare bitterless Norfloxacin suspension using Ion exchange resins. Norfloxacin was treated with the weak cation exchange resins which form the drug resin complex called resinate. The loading process was optimized for the pH of loading solution and the drug resin ratio. The resinates were evaluated for bulk density, angle of repose, taste masking, and in vitro drug release. Taste evaluation of the drug resinates showed complete masking of the bitterness of the drug. In vitro drug release studies revealed that more than 90% of the drug was released within 20 min from the drug resinates. Sweet palatable aqueous suspension of norfloxacin was formulated successfully with drug-resin complex and it was found to be stable.

Water chemistry is one of the most important parameters affecting flotation performance. Various types of ions can dissolve and accumulate in process water depending on ore mineralogy, reagent scheme, grinding medium and chemistry of mine site water. Sulfur-based ions (sulfate, thiosulfate, polythionate) are generally observed in flotation of sulfide ores. High concentrations of these ions may reduce efficiency of the flotation process, causing scale problems. Removal of these ions from process water often requires complex water treatment plants with high capital and operating costs. In this study, partial cleaning of water was investigated as an alternative approach for decreasing high sulphate concentrations of 3000–3800 mg/L down to 1000–1500 mg/L, an acceptable concentration for most sulfide ore flotation plants, by using an ion-exchange resin. For this purpose, detailed adsorption tests were performed using a laboratory-scale column system to determine the most suitable type of resin

A comparative study on the adsorption of zinc(II) and cobalt(II) from aqueous solutions onto Indion BSR, an indigenous cation-exchange resin, was undertaken in the present work. Various parameters for the removal of Co(II) and Zn(II) such as the initial solution pH, contact time, resin and metal ion concentration were optimized. The equilibrium data obtained were well fitted by both the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at pH 6.0 for 500 mg resin and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm under optimum conditions of contact time and pH 5.0 for 250 mg resin at 30degreesC. The adsorption of Zn(II) and Co(II) on this cation-exchange resin followed first-order reaction kinetics. Film diffusion of Co(II) and Zn(II) in this ion-exchange resin was shown to be the main rate-limiting step over the concentration range studied. The studies showed that the resin could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Co(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions. ...

The Elix™ module consists of a number of cells sandwiched between two electrodes. Each cell consists of a polypropylene frame onto which are bonded a cation-permeable membrane on one side, and an anion-permeable membrane on the other. The space in the center of the cell, between the ion-selective membranes, is filed with a thin bed of ion exchange resins. The cells are separated from one another by a screen separator.. The feed water entering the module is split into three parts. A small percentage flows over the electrodes, 65-75% of the feed passes through the resin beds in the cell, and the remainder passes along the screen separator between the cells.. The ion-exchange resins capture dissolved ions in the feed water at the top of the cell. Electric current applied across the module pulls those ions through the ion-selective membrane towards the electrodes. Cations are pulled through the cation-permeable membrane towards the cathode, and anions through the anion-selective membrane towards ...
Deionization also called as Demineralization, is an ion exchange resin based process which can generate water, free of dissolved salt. DM process configuration includes basic cationic and anionic beds. Typically, the cation resin operates in the hydrogen cycle. The cations in the water (i.e. calcium, magnesium and sodium) pass through the canion exchange resin where they are chemically exchanged for hydrogen ions. The Water then passes through the anion exchange resin where the anions (i.e. chloride, sulphate, nitrate and bicarbonate) are chemically exchange for hydroxide ions. The final water from this process consists essentially of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions, which is the chemical composition of pure water.. ...
Published : 20 May 2021 Author : Sales Industry: Chemical & Materials Chelating resins refer to a class of ion exchange resins that are used to bind cations and utilize chelating agents covalently attached to a polymer matrix. Such resins form a cross-linking functional polymer with a multi-coordination complex with metal ions. Among the functional groups, there are atoms such as O, N, S, P and As which have unbonded lone pairs of electrons. These resins are found in a wide range of metal removal and recovery applications from the primary recovery of precious metals as well as the removal of impurities that may be present as mere traces. These resins have the capacity to selectively bind polyvalent cations via complexing anchor groups. The structure of chelating resins is more complicated in comparison to that of ion-exchange resins. These have a wide range of applications, some of which are discussed as under:. ...

The present paper demonstrates application of isotopic tracer technique in characterization of anion exchange resins Dowex-SBR LC and Indion-454 for which 131I and 82Br radio isotopes were used. The characterization was made based on iodide and bromide ion-isotopic exchange reaction kinetic data obtained for the two resins. It was observed that during iodide ion-isotopic exchange reaction performed at 35.0 °C, 1.000 g of ion exchange resins and 0.002 mol/L labeled iodide ion solution, the values of specific reaction rate (min-1), amount of ion exchanged (mmol), initial rate of ion exchange (mmol/min) and log Kd were 0.379, 0.426, 0.161 and 16.2 respectively for Dowex-SBR LC resin, which was higher than the respective values of 0.156, 0.243, 0.038 and 13.4 as that obtained by using Indion-454 resins. The identical trend was observed for the two resins during bromide ion-isotopic exchange reaction. The results of present investigation also indicate that during the two ion-isotopic exchange reactions, for

The counteranion exchange of quaternary 1,2,3-triazolium salts was examined using a simple method that permitted halide ions to be swap for a variety of anions using an anion exchange resin (A¯ form). The method was applied to 1,2,3-triazolium-based ionic liquids and the iodideto- anion exchange proceeded in excellent to quantitative yields, concomitantly removing halide impurities. Additionally, an anion exchange resin (N3¯ form) was used to obtain the benzyl azide from benzyl halide under mild reaction. Likewise, following a similar protocol, bis(azidomethyl)arenes were also synthesized in excellent yields. The results of a proton NMR spectroscopic study of simple azolium-based ion pairs are discussed, with attention focused on the significance of the charged-assisted ( ...

Silica sols are placed in contact with a strong acid cation exchange resin. The sols are then aged out of contact with the cation exchange resin for at least about 4 hours at a temperature of from about 34 DEG F. to about the boiling point of the sols, and again contacted with a cation exchange resin. The process requires placing the sols at least twice in contact with a cation exchange resin with an aging step between each treatment, and also requires that the sols be placed at least once in contact with an anion exchange resin. The formed sols have excellent stability characteristics even at high SiO2 concentrations.

Extraction of chromium(III) from a model solution and from a tannery waste solution was studied by ion exchange using Indion 790 resin which is a macro-porous strongly acidic cation exchange resin of sulfonated polystyrene group. The resin was found to be selective for the sorption of chromium(III) in the pH range 0.5-3.5 from a model solution containing 500 ppm Cr(III). Beyond pH 3.5 extraction of chromium(III) drastically decreased from 92% to 76%. Sorption of chromium(III) on Indion 790 followed the Freundlich isotherm with a high Freundlich constant value (Kf = 8.57) confirming strong chemical interaction of the metal ion with the resin. Desorption of chromium(III) from the loaded resin increased with the increase in concentration of eluant (5-20% H2SO4). With 20% sulfuric acid solution 89% Cr(III) was eluted in two stages. The bench scale results were also validated in continuous mode in a fixed bed column and for the recovery of chromium(III) from a tannery solution ...
Anion exchange resins (AERs) were compared with aluminum-based coagulants for reducing disinfection by-product (DBP) precursor concentrations from a source water collected in northeast Ohio, USA. Three AERs (IRA-910, IRA-958, and MIEX) were evaluated to determine which resin would remove the most natural organic matter (NOM) and moieties responsible for DBP formation. All the AERs were found to be highly proficient at NOM removal specifically the moieties that absorb UV254 (i.e., chromophores) over 75 min of contact time; however, MIEX removed NOM at a faster rate than IRA-910 and IRA-958 resins. Enhanced coagulation was effective at removing approximately 35% of the NOM and 40-60% of the chromophores and fluorophores (i.e., excitation-emission matrix pairs A and C). DBP formation was determined as a function of pH for the different NOM removal processes. MIEX treatment resulted in significant reduction in DBP concentrations when compared to chlorinating the raw source water. MIEX generally ...

To apply the method of quantitative electron microscopy to the measurement of mass in thin sections, the thickness of the section at or very near the structure to be studied must be known. Dowex anion exchange resin AG 1 x 2, stained with phosphotungstic acid (PTA) at pH 6.4, was used as a thickness standard which could be embedded and sectioned. The sectioned PTA-Dowex appeared uniformly stained and exhibited suitable electron opacity. The stoichiometry of the reaction between PTA and the Dowex resin was measured by three independent methods based on gravimetric, colorimetric, and nitrogen determinations whose results showed close agreement. From the PTA uptake, the density of the stained spheres was calculated. Mass of a defined area of PTA-Dowex was measured by quantitative electron microscopy, and from this mass and density, the volume and then the thickness were calculated. The values for thickness were compared to those obtained by interference microscopy on the embedding medium alone in ...
Three materials that are designed to treat uranium-contaminated water were investigated. These are a cation exchange resin, IRN 77; an anion exchange resin, Varion AP; and a recently developed material called PANSIL (quartz sand coated with 2% amidoxime resin by weight). The reaction rate, capacity, and effective pH range of the three materials are reported. The capacity and conditional distribution coefficient in neutral, uranyl-contaminated synthetic groundwater containing carbonate are also reported. The suitability of each material for treating uranium-contaminated groundwater using a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) approach is then discussed. All three materials react rapidly in the pH range 5-7, reaching equilibrium in less than 4 h at ~23◦C. The unconditioned cation exchange resin removed 8 g UO22+ per kg of resin from neutral synthetic groundwater containing 30 mg/l of UO22+, but a lower capacity is anticipated in groundwater with either higher ionic strength or lower UO22+ ...

A multi-step process was developed for microbial d-lactic acid purification, followed by poly-d-lactic acid (PDLA) synthesis via azeotropic polycondensation process. Several anion exchange resins were screened for their binding capacity using model lactic acid solutions. Amberlite® IRA67 (weak base anion exchange resin) showed the highest lactic acid adsorption, with maximum adsorption capacity, qmax, of 136.11 mg lactic acid / g of resin, and was further selected to purify D-lactic acid from DDGS hydrolysates through a three-step process; (1) treatment with 7% w/v activated carbon, (2) acidification of fermentation broth (Amberlite® IRA120) and (3) adsorption of lactic acid by anion exchange (Amberlite® IRA67). At the end of the purification process, 80.4% (w/w) D-lactic acid was recovered with 91.8% (w/w) purity, indicating the effectiveness of the developed downstream process. Furthermore, a clear yellowish solid polymer with a molecular weight of 3010 Da was obtained, suitable for ...
1,3-propanediol is a promising monomer with many applications and can be produced by bioconversion of renewable resources. The separation of this product from fermentation broth is a difficult task. In this work, the application of cation exchange resin for the separation of 1,3-propanediol from model aqueous solution was examined. The best effect of separation of 1,3-propanediol from glycerol using sorption method was obtained for H+ resin form, although the observed partition coefficient of 1,3-propanediol was low. On the basis of the results of the sorption of 1,3-propanediol, the ionic forms of the resin were selected and used in the next experiments (H+, Ca2+, Ag+, Na+, Pb2+, Zn2+). The best results in ion exchange chromatography were obtained for cation exchange resin in H+ and Ca2+ form. The use of smaller particle size of resin and a longer length of the column allows to obtain better separation of mixtures ...

Prior art available in the literature is about the recovery of extraction solvent from degraded lean solvent stream. However, IIP has developed adsorption process for removal of salt from aqueous NMP. In this process aqueous NMP is first treated with a conditioned anion exchange resin to remove chlorides and any acidity. This is followed by treatment with cation exchange resin to remove added alkalinity. But this process does not work when salt content levels are higher than 5000 ppm. Moreover, additional infrastructure i.e. ion exchange columns are needed for this route. But present invention deals with altogether different problem i.e. recovery of extraction solvent from highly concentrated brine solution. To date no solution of such problem is discussed in the open literature. Also no patent is available. The present invention is a new idea generated in our laboratory ...

QIAGEN-tips contain a unique, patented anion-exchange resin which eliminates the need for expensive equipment and reagents such as ultracentrifuges, HPLC/FPLC‚ or CsCl. Toxic and mutagenic substances such as phenol, chloroform, and ethidium bromide are also not required. Plasmid purification on QIAGEN resin is based on the interaction between negatively charged phosphates of the DNA backbone and positively charged DEAE groups on the surface of the resin (see figure |a href=/ca/resources/technologies/plasmid-resource-center/qiagen anion-exchange resin/images/chemical structure of positively charged deae groups of qiagen resin/>Chemical structure of positively charged DEAE groups of QIAGEN resin|/a>). epsilon-Poly-L-lysine (epsilon-PL) consists of 25-35 lysine residues which are linked by an isopeptide bond formed by dehydration condensation of alpha-carboxyl and epsilon-amino groups and has good antibacterial activity and broad-spectrum inhibition range. However, there is no clear conclusion about the structure and antibacterial mechanism of epsilon-PL in aqueous solution. Herein, a high purity of epsilon-PL was prepared using Amberlite IRC-50 ion-exchange resin. Membrane filtration and dynamic light scattering were used to study the variations of epsilon-PL aggregation in aqueous solution with pH value. The conformational changes and antibacterial activities of epsilon-PL and carbamoylated epsilon-PL in different water environments were studied with circular dichroism (CD) and inhibition zone. The structural changes during the spray-drying process were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the side chain amino charge played a decisive role in the ...
