Abstract. Iodine status measured as urinary iodine excretion in school children has improved in recent years in Indonesia, including Central Java province. However, the Total Goiter Rate (TGR) in the Ngargoyoso sub-district was 51.0% in 2010.The objective of this study was to identify environmental factors that may affect iodine deficiency in this sub-district. An ecological perspective was used as a conceptual framework to conduct cross sectional studies between 2010 and 2015. Data on Total goiter rate was collected from 800 schoolchildren aged 8-10 years using palpation of the thyroid gland. The urinary iodine excretion was carried out by using acid digestion Sandell- Kolthoff reaction on 371 preschool children and 153 pregnant ...
Taking supplements from complete, natural nourishments is typically remarkably prompted. Then again, a substantial number of sustenance items dont really have sufficient iodine amounts to considerably expand tissue measures of iodine inside the physique, or maybe the iodine is not effectively taken in. Therefore its gainful to take iodine health supplements.. Detoxadine is a five star every day beginning nuclear iodine wholesome supplement fabricated from solid transformative iodine in a bio-basic nanocolloidal state. It truly is a Standardised iodine item whose iodine substance consents to or surpasses permitting and administrative criteria. Furthermore, all Detoxadine constituents are USP quality, and Detoxadine meets cgmp prerequisites, is Lab-Grade generated, is Kosher ( Kashrus ) sanction, and Vegan and Halal agreeable.. The regularly crude, guaranteed USP class iodine used to make Detoxadine is coming about because of regular remote ocean vegetable sources, for example, kelp, also it is ...
Iodine is an absolute requirement for maternal, fetal, and postnatal thyroid hormone synthesis. Newborns affected with iodine deficiency have low T4 and high TSH concentrations. With radioisotope imaging, there is avid uptake of 123I by a normally located gland. Treatment involves iodine replacement until normal iodine balance is achieved.. On a global basis, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of transient hypothyroidism, particularly in preterm newborns.15,-,17 Preterm newborns are at higher risk because they have been prematurely deprived of the maternal supply of thyroid hormone, as well as iodine, which leads to inadequate accumulation of iodine in the thyroid gland compared with that of term newborns. Hypothyroidism represents a form of the broader category of iodine-deficiency disorders, which include endemic goiter, hypothyroidism, cretinism, decreased fertility rate, increased infant mortality, and intellectual disability.18 There is extreme variation in iodine deficiency among ...
Abstract-Radioiodines, particularly 131I, may be released into the environment in breach-of-containment nuclear reactor accidents and localize in and irradiate the thyroid with an attendant risk of neoplastic growth and other adverse health effects. Pharmacologic thyroid blockade by oral potassium iodide (KI) (50-100 mg in adults) can substantially reduce thyroid uptake of and irradiation by internalized radioiodine. In the current analysis, computer modeling of iodine metabolism has been used to systematically elucidate the effects of two practically important but highly variable factors on the radioprotective effect of KI: the time of administration relative to exposure to radioiodine and the dietary level of iodine. In euthyroid adults receiving iodine-sufficient diets (250 &mgr;g d−1 in the current analysis), KI administered up to 48 h before 131I exposure can almost completely block thyroid uptake and therefore greatly reduce the thyroid absorbed dose. However, KI administration 96 h or more
Following an application from Specialised Nutrition Europe (formerly IDACE), submitted pursuant to Article 14 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 via the Competent Authority of France, the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the scientific substantiation of a health claim related to iodine and contribution to normal cognitive development. The food constituent, iodine, which is the subject of the health claim, is sufficiently characterised. Contribution to normal cognitive development is a beneficial physiological effect for infants and young children. A claim on iodine and contribution to normal cognitive and neurological function in the general population has already been assessed with a favourable outcome. In addition, there is a large body of evidence indicating a crucial role for iodine in growth and development. The Panel notes the well established role of iodine in preventing iodine deficiency disorders such as retarded mental and ...
Cases of thyroid dysfunction associated with ingestion of soy milk. In November 2008, a 36-year-old woman (Patient 1, Box 1) presented with a mildly elevated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level detected during screening for in vitro fertilisation. As she tested negative for thyroid antibodies, her urinary iodine level was measured to exclude iodine deficiency; this level was markedly elevated at 4445 μg/L (reference range [RR], , 200 μg/L). The source of the excess iodine was unclear until the patient did an internet search and identified that the soy milk she had been drinking (Bonsoy) contained kombu1,2 - a type of seaweed. The patient ceased drinking the soy milk, which resulted in rapid normalisation of her TSH level. Three months later, a 38-year-old man (Patient 2, Box 1) presented with florid thyrotoxicosis. Minimal uptake of technetium on a thyroid scan and absence of TSH receptor antibodies essentially excluded Graves disease. The scan result, in combination with his ...
INTRODUCTION. The antibacterial properties of iodine have been known for more than 150 years, and, at the present, it is widely used as antiseptic for treating and preventing wound infections in daily practice and in preoperative skin preparations.1 In some neonatal departments iodine is applied in umbilical cord care; however, some adverse effects due to excess iodine absorption have been reported in preterm and low-birth-weight infants as thyroid dysfunction. Additionally, abnormalities of cardiac conduction, lactic acidosis, acute renal failure, and hypocalcaemia have been also described depending on the severity of intoxication.2. Povidone-iodine (PI), a stable chemical complex of polyvinylpyrolidone and elemental iodine, has replaced the widespread use of other iodine solutions as iodine tincture in emergency kits. Nowadays, it is often used topically to disinfect wounds at homes. In spite of its common use, povidone iodine poisoning is unusual and previously reported effects are mainly ...
Pure Encapsulations Potassium Iodine What Is It? Iodine provides natural support for the thyroid gland, helping to maintain healthy cellular metabolism.* Uses For Iodine Thyroid Support: Iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland and supports the formation of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones have the ability to cross cell membranes, thereby supporting all cells of the body. In the cell, they promote metabolic function by enhancing mitochondrial activity and enzyme synthesis, particularly in the muscle and liver.* What Is The Source? Pure Encapsulations Iodine is from potassium iodide. Iodide is derived from salt brine. Hypo-allergenic plant fiber is derived from pine cellulose. Each capsule typically contains 74 mcg potassium. Recommendations Pure Encapsulations recommends 2 capsules daily, in divided doses, with meals. *Iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland and supports the formation of thyroid hormones. Fallout from a nuclear bomb explosion or a nuclear power plant meltdown is full of radioactive iodine-131 (I-131). Nuclear fission splits the nuclei of uranium-235 and plutonium-239, producing I-131. The stable, natural isotope of iodine is iodine-127. Iodine is the largest and heaviest element of the 25 elements that make up the human body. Iodine plays a number of important roles in the body. The thyroid gland uses it to make thyroxine, with 4 iodine atoms, and triiodothyronine (T3), with three. The active form, T3, regulates metabolism, thermogenesis, and protein synthesis. Other tissues and glands require iodine to function normally, including stomach mucosa, mammary glands, ovaries, salivary glands, prostate, and the thymus gland. Iodine functions as an antioxidant, strengthens the immune system, and suppresses autoimmunity. And it triggers apoptosis, destroying cells that become cancerous and cells infected with viruses. Iodine also removes toxic chemicals from the body - fluoride, ...
Many people with Graves Disease have received the radioactive iodine uptake test. This test involves the person swallowing a small dosage of radioactive iodine. The thyroid gland in turn will absorb the radioactive iodine, and this is then evaluated after six hours, and then once again after 24 hours.. Many endocrinologists use the radioactive iodine uptake test to come up with their diagnosis of Graves Disease. However, its important to understand that this test does not conclude that someone has this autoimmune hyperthyroid condition. If the results of the uptake test are high then this shows that the thyroid gland is secreting an excessive amount of thyroid hormone, and in many instances the person with a high uptake test will have Graves Disease. This test can also determine the presence of hot and cold nodules, which can give the doctor an idea as to whether they are benign or malignant.. But while the radioactive iodine uptake test can be helpful, the only surefire method to confirm ...
1981: Lamberg et al. Further decrease in thyroidal uptake and disappearance of endemic goitre in children after 30 years of iodine prophylaxis in the east of Finland. Endemic goitre of moderate severity was mainly found in the east of Finland in the 1930′s. Studies in the 1950′s showed an average daily iodine intake of 65-70 micrograms in the west and 50-65 micrograms in the east of the country. The use of iodized salt was introduced in the late 1940′s but added only 15 micrograms of iodine to the daily intake. In the late 1950′s iodine prophylaxis was intensified and the use of salt containing 25 mg KI/kg was recommended. In 1978 about 95% of all household salt used in the Savonlinna area was iodized. This region in the east of Finland has been used as an area of surveillance and studies have been carried out there in 1959, 1969 and 1979. During this period the thyroidal uptake decreased from 67 to 23% in non-goitrous subjects and from 62 to 28% in goitre patients the difference ...
A 2 by 4 factorial experiment replicated 3 times, arranged in a randomized complete block design was conducted to determine the effectiveness of agronomic iodine biofortification of two varieties of cassava (TME 419 and TMS 30555) using different rates of potassium iodate (0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10kg/ha) in Calabar, southeastern Nigeria. Parameters measured were growth rate (plant height), tuber number, tuber weight and tuber weight per plot. Iodine content in harvested tuberswere also determined. Results indicated that plant height, number of stem, number of leaves, LA and LA1 were not markedly affected by applied iodine (P> 0.05); tuber number, weight and plot yields did not vary significantly with iodine rates. Iodine absorption and retention in tuber flesh and processed product were significant positively correlated with iodine doses ( ...

In our age of increasing radioactivity and toxic poisoning specifically with fluoride,[1] chlorine, bromide, and even mercury, iodine is a necessary mineral.. Iodine is extremely important since the cells need it to regulate their metabolism. Without it, people are known to suffer from swollen glands in the throat, thyroid diseases, increased fluoride toxicity, decreased fertility rates, increased infant mortality rates, and (with severe deficiency) mental retardation. It has been theorized that iodine deficiency is a causal factor of ADHD in babies of iodine-deficient mothers.. Iodine intake immediately increases the excretion of bromide, fluoride, and some heavy metals including mercury and lead. Bromide and fluoride are not removed by any other chelator or detoxifying technique.. Dr. Kenezy Gyula Korhaz states that iodine chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and halogens such as fluoride and bromide, thus decreasing their iodine-inhibiting effects,[2] especially of ...

New research confirms that those with shellfish allergy are not more likely to react to radiocontrast material used to improve clarity on x-ray scans.. In the past, it had been suggested that, because of their high iodine content, the imaging agents were leading to cross-reactions in shellfish-allergic patients. Shellfish also tends to be high in iodine.. You cant be allergic to iodine; its already in your body - its found in thyroid hormones and amino acids, says Dr. Joelle Borhart of Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Iodine is essential for our survival.. After analyzing several studies, Borhart found there was no reason to single out those with shellfish allergy as being especially susceptible to reactions to imaging agents.. It is unclear how this medical myth started, but it has become pervasive. One study found that 92 percent of shellfish-allergic patients believed they would react to iodine. Another found that a majority of radiologists still ask patients whether ...
An iodine intake of 100 to 150 ~tg/day is considered nutritionally adequate.Urinary iodine levels are similar to intake levels and can be used to estimate iodine consumption. Iodine deficiency occurs with an intake below 50 ~tg/day. Persons consuming this level are at risk for developing goiter. Goiter is almost alwaysinduced by intakes under 10 ~tg/day. Goiter is enlargement or hypertrophy of the thyroid gland. The thyroid in the iodine-sufficient subject is barely visible in theneck. Goiter, of increasing severity, is categorized in three grades: (1) a small enlargement detectable by palpitation, (2) a thick neck, and (3) a large swelling that may be asymmetrical and is visible from a distance. A grade 3 goiter compressesthe trachea and can result in shortness of breath during heavy work. The highest incidences of goiter are found in less developed areas of the world such as the Czech Republic, the former Yugoslavia, parts of India, Paragua~ Peru, Argentina, Pakistan, most of Africa, Southeast ...

Light micrograph of hyperplastic goiter. Causes of goiter include Gravess disease, lack of dietary iodine, simple overgrowth or the presence of a tumour. A lack of dietary iodine, which is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones, causes the gland to enlarge in an attempt to increase hormone production. Iodine deficiency was the cause of endemic goiter, formerly common in regions where the diet lacked iodine. - Stock Image C025/2890
I ve been on iodine since October 2016, so about 7 months now, and since last Dr. visit, both ovarian cysts are now shrinking! Super happy :) A little about my iodine intake... I take 150mg Lugol s every day, split into two doses spread out, and I also paint my abdomen a couple times a week. I want to add, I have also been doing castor oil packets here and there, I m sure this has helped too. I ve said this in a different post, but iodine also helped completely dissolve my uterine fibroid
The specification of biodiesel is related to factors associated with its quality as a fuel. The iodine value as one of those quality parameters measures the degree of unsaturation present in a biodiesel composition. The unsaturated fatty acids (existence of double bonds) are susceptible to the oxidation reactions that can lead to the formation of polymeric compounds by heating. Moreover, these polymeric compounds can produce gum formation, which is detrimental to the vehicle engine due to its corrosive actions. For determining the iodine value in biodiesel, the standardized procedures use volumetric titration-with starch as an indicator-as the main technique for iodine value measurement. Some of these procedures also mention potentiometric titration as an alternative technique. This work aims to show the results of the iodine value obtained from an experimental design based on 23 factorial designs at two levels. It was performed on a biodiesel matrix from palm oil in order to indicate major ...
This brings up another point. With all the fluorine and chlorine we are exposed to from bathing, brushing our teeth, cooking with tap water, drinking tea, consuming chlorides such as sodium chloride (table salt), etc. why isnt every one breaking out in acne? After all fluorine and chlorine will both push bromine out of the system. On the other hand iodine is less reactive than bromine so the bromine if present will push the iodine out of the system. Yet they are claiming that the acne only occurs when they take the less reactive iodine that does not push bromine out of the body like fluorine and chlorine will ...
Iodine was discovered in the residue of burnt seaweed in 1812. ( Courtois). 1820 Coindet gave iodine (KI) as the active ingredient in seaweed to goiter patients. The goiters shrank. However, toxic effects occurred from excess iodine in some patients. It was shelved for goiters after that. The major complication was toxic iodine induced thyrotoxicosis. This is the first description of any form of thyrotoxicosis by Coindet. They knew it worked but did not know it was replacing a deficiency of iodine. Most of the 19 th century few accepted that a disease could be caused by a lack of something. Even though iodine was not accepted as the cause in 1830 it was used to treat goiter in Columbia South America, and in 1850 by Chatin in France. It was thought goiter was caused by something in the water-toxin,bacteria, or a parasite. The cause was not determined until early 20th century when small amounts of iodine given to school girls in Akron Ohio prevented goiters.. to be continued. ...
Also avoid sodium lauryl sulfite (SLS), these products are often labeled SLS free.. Iodine - Missing Protection from our Food Supply.. Thirty years ago iodine (Read more about iodine is needed) was removed from our bread and replaced with bromide (Bromide affects your thyroid!). Since that time breast cancer rates and thyroid dysfunction have sky rocketed to epidemic levels and continue to climb ever higher, as your food gets worse and our total body burden of chemicals and heavy metals climbs higher. Hypothroidism is very common today and our average body temperature is no longer 98.6. Having a temperature of 98.6 is imperative because the liver performs many functions and depends on the correct body temperature for those enzymatic processes to occur.. Iodine, chlorine, bromine and fluoride are all halides, except only iodine is a healthy halide, the others belong in a class referred to as toxic halides. Eating bread, taking a shower, and brushing your teeth can all be dangerous to your ...
Latest improvements in physiology and molecular discipline own revolutionized our understanding of iodine energy at the cellular and sub-cellular levels. This in move offers improved our knowledge of Iodine Insufficiency Problems (IDD), their reduction, control and management.. Iodine can be consumed by mouth area to prevent and take care of iodine deficit and its effects, incorporating goiter and some thyroid problems. It is certainly furthermore employed for treating lumpy chests (fibrocystic breasts ailment) and chest soreness (mastalgia).. Despair, exhausted, signs and ...
In the present work, a simple and rapid method for determination of iodate is described. Iodometric reaction between iodate, excess iodide, and acid has been used, and the iodine liberated is allowed to react with variamine blue (VB) dye in the presence of sodium acetate to yield a violet-colored species. A calibration curve was obtained in the concentration range of 2 to 30 μg of iodate in a final equilibration volume of 10 mL. The effect of different interfering anions on determination of iodate was also studied. The developed method was applied to iodate determination in various iodized salt samples obtained from local markets in and around Pune city, India. The amount of iodate in various table salt samples was in the range of 10 to 25 ppm.

Today,Dr.Tashiro from Hiroshima university published the data to show about half of the children in Fukushima have their thyroid exposed to radioactive Iodine.. They tested 1149 children in Fukushima ,and they detected radioactive Iodine from about half of the sample.. Dr.Tashio said, they may have thyroid cancer if they are internally exposed to more than 100mSv.. but in the data, even the highest level is only 35mSv,so it is hard to assume they will have a thyroid cancer.. However, they will continue monitoring the children.. However again,I personally have a couple of the questions.. 1) What is the basis of 100mSv. 2) From their historical deception,it is highly likely that actual data is even worse than that.. 3) Why dont they let the children evacuate right now.. 4) Half life time of Iodine is about 8 days. I wonder why they still detect Iodine.(sorry,Im amateur.). 5) Why did they delete all the thyroid test data from the website of Nuclear Safety Commission.. Maybe I dont need to watch ...

Commonly encountered environmental chemicals might augment the effects of iodine deficiency by competing for transport by the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). The NIS is an integral plasma membrane glycoprotein found in the thyroid gland and the lactating mammary gland, among other tissues. 12 The NIS mediates the active transport of iodide into the thyroid follicular cells, making it available to iodinate dehydroxylated tyrosine for the first step in thyroid hormone synthesis. In the mammary gland, the NIS mediates transport of iodide into milk, making it available to the infant. Although the NIS has a high affinity for iodide, other anions, such as thiocyanate, nitrate, and perchlorate, can compete with (and be transported as) iodide and thus decrease iodide concentration within the thyroid gland or milk. Although such transport might be expected to lead to increased concentrations of nitrate, thiocyanate, and perchlorate in human milk, only perchlorate exposure and excretion have been found to ...

Despite that adverse taste, almost all the research on iodine supplementation has been done using Lugols Solution (17). The original solution is called 5% Lugols Iodine, but in reality it consists of 12.5% iodide/iodine or (I-/[I3]-) ions. Two drops of Lugols Solution (0.1 ml) contain 12.5 mg iodine/iodide mix. Several minerals and trace elements are essential for normal thyroid hormone metabolism, e.g., iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc. Coexisting deficiencies of these elements can impair thyroid function. Iron deficiency impairs thyroid hormone synthesis by reducing activity of heme-dependent thyroid peroxidase. Iron-deficiency anemia blunts and iron supplementation improves the efficacy of iodine supplementation. Combined selenium and iodine deficiency leads to myxedematous cretinism. The normal thyroid gland retains high selenium concentrations even under conditions of inadequate selenium supply and expresses many of the known selenocysteine-containing proteins. Among these selenoproteins are the glutathione peroxidase, deiodinase, and thioredoxine reductase families of enzymes. Adequate selenium nutrition supports efficient thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism and protects the thyroid gland from damage by excessive iodide exposure. In regions of combined severe iodine and selenium deficiency, ...

Thyroid disorders are very common and tend to occur in persons of all age groups. The global incidence of thyroid disorders are increasing as the thyroid gland easily responds to the factors such as- stress and anxiety.. According to World Health Organization, about 2 billion people are iodine deficient worldwide. The iodine deficiency causes goiter and severe iodine deficiency causes Hypothyroidism.. The thyroid gland is a small and butterfly shaped gland that is situated in front of the neck. The function of thyroid gland is to produce two hormones: T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxin) and calcitonin. But, strictly speaking, T3 and T4 are proper thyroid hormones.. ...

The small, butterfly-shaped thyroid sits just below the voice box. From this perch, it controls how fast every cell in the body changes food into energy. The glands main product, thyroid hormone, governs the function of the digestive tract, brain, heart, nerves, muscles, bones, skin, and more.. Iodine is a key ingredient that goes into making thyroid hormone. We get this element from ocean-caught or ocean-farmed fish and shellfish, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and fruits and vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil.. The human body is surprisingly good at absorbing iodine and storing it in the thyroid gland. Thats a problem when iodine-131 is released into the atmosphere. The thyroid stores it as readily as natural, non-radioactive iodine. As iodine-131 builds up in the thyroid gland, it emits bursts of radiation that can damage DNA and other genetic material. Such damage can remove the normal limits to cell growth and division. Unchecked growth of thyroid tissue is thyroid cancer.. Iodine-131 gets ...

Most people reading this know that iodine is important for the formation of thyroid hormone. There is a good amount of evidence that an iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to health issues with the developing fetus. And so to reduce the chances of health issues developing in the fetus, it probably would make sense for all pregnant women to take a prenatal vitamin with iodine during pregnancy, or perhaps a separate iodine supplement in some cases. But many women with Hashimotos Thyroiditis are told to completely avoid iodine. And so what approach should pregnant women with Hashimotos Thyroiditis take?. While some healthcare professionals will recommend for everyone with an autoimmune thyroid condition to avoid iodine, I dont necessarily share this viewpoint. However, even though I feel that s0me people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions can benefit from iodine supplementation, I am very cautious when it comes to recommending iodine to people with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. In ...
FSANZ has investigated levels of iodine in beverages enriched with seaweed following an increased number of reported human thyroid dysfunction cases resulting from high iodine intake. Investigation into the cause of thyroid dysfunction showed a link to the consumption of Bonsoy soy beverage, which was found to contain high iodine levels resulting from the addition of seaweed (kombu, Laminaria spp ) during the manufacturing process. On 24 December 2009, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) coordinated a national food recall and issued a media release advising people not to consume Bonsoy soy beverage with all best before dates. This product was also recalled in the UK, Ireland, Singapore and Hong Kong.. FSANZ, in consultation with Australian States and Territories, conducted a survey to investigate iodine levels in other beverages enriched with seaweed available for sale in Australia. The results of this survey reassure consumers that iodine levels in the beverages surveyed are well ...
Iodine 129 is a radioactive waste produced by the nuclear industry. Due to its high volatility, it cannot be vitrified in conventional borosilicate glasses. This paper investigates the feasibility of iodine conditioning using a glass matrix intended for long-term storage in a geological repository. Silver phosphate glasses, which can incorporate high amounts of iodine and can be synthesized at low temperature, were chosen for this study. In order to increase their chemical durability, the glasses were cross-linked by niobium and bismuth oxides. Niobium and bismuth incorporation limits were determined for an iodine amount of 12 wt% and ranged from 1.6 mol% to 4.0 mol%, depending on the Ag2O/P2O5 ratio. The glass structures were investigated using 31P MAS NMR, RAMAN spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The iodine local environment was determined by EXAFS at iodine K-edge. Structural investigations showed that the introduction of these crosslinking reagents induces a significant increase in the
We aimed to study the validity of six published ultrasound criteria for risk stratification of thyroid nodules in the former severely iodine deficient population of Austria. Retrospective, single centre, observer blinded study design. All patients with a history of thyroidectomy due to nodules seen in the centre between 2004 and 2014 with preoperative in-house sonography and documented postoperative histology were analyzed (n = 195). A board of five experienced thyroidologists evaluated the images of 45 papillary carcinomas, 8 follicular carcinomas, and 142 benign nodules regarding the following criteria: mild hypoechogenicity, marked hypoechogenicity, microlobulated or irregular margins, microcalcifications, taller than wide shape, missing thin halo. All criteria but mild hypoechogenicity were significantly more frequent in thyroid cancer than in benign nodules. The number of positive criteria was significantly higher in cancer (2.79 ± 1.35) than in benign nodules (1.73 ± 1.18; p | 0.001). Thus, with
Hypothyroidism has a number of associated symptoms. Many of these, as you will see, have a close resemblance to symptoms commonly associated with adrenal fatigue.

Your thyroid runs on iodine and will absorb all it can until it is absolutely full. This fullness is called saturation or blockade. However, your thyroid does not know the difference between good iodine and bad iodine. Good iodine is taken up by the thyroid in the form of potassium iodate (KI03) or potassium iodide (KI). Bad iodine, I-131, is a radioisotope of iodine which is produced in nuclear reactions such as a bomb or nuclear power plant. I-131 is what we call a beta emitter and if you get it on your skin it will burn you in much the same way as when you get bad sunburn. It has a half-life of roughly 8 days (8.01 to 8.07). One of the reasons spent fuel rods are stored in pools of water for months at a time, is that they will be off-gassing I-131 for roughly 10 half-lives (approximately 80 days). ...
The iodine atom, with its relatively high atomic weight, attenuates x-rays and is used in most intravascular contrast agents today. Iodines K shell binding energy of 33.2 keV is ideal for x-ray photon absorption. Covalent bonding of 3 iodine atoms to a benzene ring at the 2, 4, and 6 position-the basic structure of all iodinated contrast agents (Fig. 18-1)-allows iodine to be delivered intravascularly, free of the side effects of free iodine, and also increases the effective molecular concentration of iodine, improving the ability to attenuate x-rays.1 An iodine concentration of 320 to 370 mg/mL is optimal for angiographic studies. Although all iodinated contrast agents use this basic benzene ring structure, the number of rings per molecule (monomers or dimers) and the side chains at the 1, 3, and 5 positions give each of them unique chemical properties.2 ...

Elevation of the protein-bound iodine (PBI) to hyperthyroid levels (9 to 11 µg/100 ml) in a patient was apparently due to the iodide content of the dye used to color lithium carbonate capsules. In five normal subjects taking empty capsules for 6 weeks the PBI level rose significantly, although it did not exceed the normal range. Mean values had returned to pretreatment levels 6 weeks later. The radioactive iodine (RAI) uptake was depressed in the patient but was not significantly altered in the five normals. The dye (erythrosine) is widely used in coloring foods and drugs and may be a fairly common source of mild PBI elevations in euthyroid patients. ...
Millions of people have taken KI but few serious sideeffects have been reported. The only people who should not take KI are those who have had a major allergic reaction to iodine; it is safe to take KI even if you have a shellfish or contrast dye allergy. During a nuclear emergency, KIs benefit far outweighs any potential risk. Adults over 40 years old do not need KI at all unless they are exposed to extremely high levels of radioactive iodine.. Patients with thyroid disease can safely take the pills in the FDA recommended doses. KI should be used for 10-14 days or as directed by public officials (until risk of exposure has passed or other measures are implemented). If KI is taken for a prolonged amount of time, it can lead to temporary hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) or hyperthyroidism (an overactive gland) in some people.. Prolonged treatment can cause thyroid dysfunction for very young children. Such children should be seen afterward by a health professional. Patients with Graves ...
Introduction: Fluorosis an endemic problem affects many tissues including endocrine glands such as thyroid. Iodine deficiency remains the most common cause of primary hypothyroidism worldwide. Fluoride and iodine are both halogens. Fluoride, the negative ion of the element fluorine, easily displaces iodine in the body because it is much lighter and therefore more reactive. Few studies have reported no relationship between serum fluoride levels and thyroid disorders, while others have reported decreased serum thyroid hormone levels are associated with increased fluoride levels in hypothyroidism. Goiter and hypothyroidism are known to be caused by iodine deficiency. However, it has also been found to occur in areas where there are adequate supplies of iodine, but where there is an excess fluoride in the water. The present study was conducted to assess the fluoride status in newly diagnosed cases of hypothyroidism. Aims & objectives 1) To assess the fluoride status in the patients of hypothyroidism ...

Purpose To test the hypothesis that the incomplete diagnosis iodine allergy is a possibly dangerous concept for patients under routine radiologic conditions. Materials and Methods 300 patients with a history of an iodine allergy were retrospectively screened and compared with two age-, sex-, and procedure-matched groups of patients either diagnosed with a nonspecific iodine contrast medium (ICM) allergy or an allergy to a specific ICM agent. For all groups, the clinical symptoms of the most recent past adverse drug reaction (ADR), prophylactic actions taken for subsequent imaging, and ultimate outcome were recorded and analyzed ...

Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, also referred to as I-131 therapy, is used to treat any thyroid cancer that is left after a total thyroidectomy. This may include either a small amount of cancer remaining in the neck (residual) or metastases that cannot be removed with surgery, including cancer that has spread to the lungs. RAI is not used after a lobectomy.. Thyroid cells have the ability to absorb and concentrate iodine and use iodine to make thyroid hormone. Since differentiated thyroid cancer develops from normal thyroid cells, most DTC also have the ability to absorb iodine. Thus, RAI is used as a targeted form of treatment to eliminate all remaining normal thyroid tissue and destroy (ablate) residual cancerous thyroid tissue (see Radioactive Iodine brochure). Since most other tissues in the body do not absorb iodine, RAI administered for ablation usually has little or no effect on organs outside of the thyroid. However, in some patients who receive larger doses of RAI for treatment of ...
