Questionnaires were sent out at the time of the October 19, 1987 stock market crash to both individual and institutional investors inquiring about their behavior during the crash. Nearly 1000 responses were received. The survey results show that: 1. no news story or rumor appearing on the 19th or over the preceding weekend was responsible for investor behavior, 2. investors importance rating of news appearing over the preceding week showed only a slight relation to decisions to buy or sell, 3. there was a great deal of investor talk and anxiety around October 19, much more than suggested by the volume of trade, 4. Many investors thought that they could predict the market, 5. Both buyers and sellers generally thought before the crash that the market was overvalued, 6. Most investors interpreted the crash as due to the psychology of other investors, 7. Many investors were influenced by technical analysis considerations, 8. Portfolio insurance is only a small part of predetermined stop-loss ...

We examine the role of institutional investors in financial markets and in corporate governance. In many countries, institutional investors have become the predominant players in financial markets and their influence worldwide is growing, chiefly due to the privatization and development of pension fund systems. Moreover, foreign institutional investors are becoming a significant presence, bringing their trading habits and corporate governance preferences to international markets. In fact, we argue that the primary actors prompting change in many corporate governance systems are institutional investors, often foreign institutional investors. In other countries the role of institutional investors is limited. Instead, large blockholders, often in the form of individuals, family groups, other corporations, or lending institutions are the dominant players. We present the theoretical arguments for the involvement of investors in shareholder monitoring and a brief history of institutional ownership and ...
Vancouver may be Lotus Land, but its residents are far from tranquil.. BMO recently released a new study that found B.C. investors were the most emotional and impulsive investors in the country.. The study found that:. •63% of B.C. investors have made investment decisions based solely on impulse;. •47% said their emotions played a role in choosing their investments;. •45% of B.C. residents arent confident investors;. •only 17% bother to do careful research on their investments; and. •15% base their investment decision solely on a companys name or logo;. Add those findings up and its not surprising that investment scammers have continued to fleece investors in Canadas westernmost frontier. On the flip side, reading the statistics, its surprising more investors havent lost their hard-earned money in B.C.. Little wonder then that financial institutions and regulators continue to hammer home the need for investors to become more informed about the financial world.. While its clear ...
The terrorist attacks that have occurred in the past few years around the world have raised international awareness of the danger of terrorism and its complex repercussions on the financial markets. This paper explores the ways in which financial markets reacted to the attacks and the authorities responses. Well-functioning financial markets, bolstered by the prompt and effective reaction of the relevant authorities, were generally efficient in absorbing shocks stemming from terrorist attacks. The paper discusses market and regulatory responses to the terrorist attacks and the elements that should be strengthened so as to further enhance the resilience of financial markets to terrorism.

Downloadable! This paper fits Generalized Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models to the daily closing stock market indices of Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan to compute for time-varying weights associated with the volatilities of individual indices. These weights and the returns of the various indices were then used to determine the common component of stock market returns. Our results suggest that a common component of the Asia-Pacific stock market returns exists, which significantly explains the individual countrys stock market returns. We also find that stock markets of Korea and Hong Kong are the two most sensitive to changes in the common component stock returns, while Chinas stock market is the least sensitive.

Author(s): Roberto Rigobon & Brian Sack. 2001 Abstract: Movements in the stock market can have a significant impact on the macroeconomy and are therefore likely to be an important factor in the determination of monetary policy. However, little is known about the magnitude of the Federal Reserves reaction to the stock market. One reason is that it is difficult to estimate the policy reaction because of the simultaneous response of equity prices to interest rate changes. This paper uses an identification technique based on the heteroskedasticity of stock market returns to identify the reaction of monetary policy to the stock market. The results indicate that monetary policy reacts significantly to stock market movements, with a 5% rise (fall) in the S&P 500 index increasing the likelihood of a 25 basis point tightening (easing) by about a half. This reaction is roughly of the magnitude that would be expected from estimates of the impact of stock market movements on aggregate demand. Thus,
This paper analyzes optimal portfolio decisions of long-horizon investors with undiversifiable labor income risk and exogenous expected retirement and lifetime horizons. It shows that the fraction of savings optimally invested in stocks is unambiguously larger for employed investors than for retired investors when labor income risk is uncorrelated with stock return risk. This result provides support for the popular recommendation by investment advisors that employed investors should invest in stocks a larger proportion of their savings than retired investors. This paper also examines the effect of increasing labor income risk on savings and portfolio choice and finds that, when labor income risk is independent of stock market risk, a mean-preserving increases in the variance of labor income growth increases the investors willingness to save and reduce her willingness to hold the risky asset in her portfolio. A sensible calibration of the model shows that savings are relatively more responsive ...

The new head of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plans $10-billion private equity portfolio will have to hit the ground running when she assumes the position in mid-October. This study investigates the politico-economic determinants of the crowding-in effects of public investments in a cross-section of 25 developing countries for the 1975-2000 period using multivariate probit analysis. The estimation results show that public fixed capital investments may crowd in private investments, but this still depends on the developments in the economic, political, and legal environment of business in individual countries. As such, our findings capture the essence of the mixed results found in this literature well and shed further light on the conditions under which public investments are more likely (not) to crowd in private investments in developing countries Show more ...

Prior studies on the skewness in the return distribution mainly focus on the two parts-the determinants of skewness and the implication of the skewness. The empirical researches find that expected skewness has a negative effect on the stock returns, and most studies are conducted with U.S. market data. This dissertation extends the research to the Chinese stock markets. We investigate this relation with the data of Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange markets. We conduct the Fama-MacBeth procedure, and obtain almost the similar results as Zhang (2005)s that a negative relation between skewness variables and expected return in U.S. stock market, though the relation between the cumulative skewness measures and expected return is close to zero and positive. This difference may due to the difference observation period and the heterogeneous characters among the stock markets in different countries.. ...

This paper studies the relationship between investor protection, entrepreneurial risk taking and income inequality. In the presence of market frictions, better protection makes investors more willing to take on entrepreneurial risk when lending to firms, thereby improving the degree of risk sharing between financiers and entrepreneurs. On the other hand, by increasing risk sharing, investor protection also induces more firms to undertake risky projects. By increasing entrepreneurial risk taking, it raises income dispersion. By reducing the risk faced by entrepreneurs, it reduces income volatility. As a result, investor protection raises income inequality to the extent that it fosters risk taking, while it reduces it for a given level of risk taking. Empirical evidence from a panel of forty-five countries spanning the period 1976-2000 supports the predictions of the model ...

As the debt crisis in Europe continues to unfold, renewed attention is placed increasingly on public (and private) investment as a vehicle for reigniting growth and counterbalancing the austerity effects of fiscal consolidation policies. Nowhere is this more urgent, or salient, than in Greece. However, there is remarkably little research, at least in that country, examining the criteria under which public investment is allocated across functional categories and across space. This article offers an extensive analysis of the spatial and functional allocation of public investment in Greece over a 33-year period and for various political-economic sub-periods. It examines the prevalence of criteria relating to redistribution, efficiency and equity; the temporal stability and functional complementarity of the observed allocations; and the extent of specialisation, concentration and clustering. Our results offer little evidence of regional or functional targeting, the exploitation of synergies and ...
The discrete nature of financial markets time-series data may prejudice the BDS and Close Returns test for nonlinearity. Our estimation results suggest that a tick/volatility ratio threshold exists, beyond which the test results are biased. Further, tick/volatility ratios that exceed these thresholds are frequently observed in financial markets data, which suggests that the results of the BDS and CR test must be interpreted with caution.
Crédit Agricole Private Equitys entire venture capital team is thrilled with this latest IPO. It is the teams third successful IPO, following those of Adenclassifieds and METabolic EXplorer, representing a real achievement for the team and the French biotech sector in general (see the Crédit Agricole Private Equity-Metex press release of 17 April 2007).. In 2006, Crédit Agricole Private Equity participated in AMTs €22 million series A round of financing alongside leading international investors Forbion, Advent and Gilde. This investment has enabled the company to step up its clinical development and production capacity. The IPO is the logical follow-on from this, preparing the company for the launch of its lead candidate AMT-011 for the treatment of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) deficiency, a rare and often fatal disease. It will also enable it to step up the development of other products in the portfolio. In addition, the IPO - finalised less than one year after the first round of investment ...

"There is continuing concern about whats going on in Europe - and globally, but its becoming a little bit ridiculous. There is so much focus on volatility and people wanting to preserve their capital in the short-term that investment opportunities are being lost or ignored.. "Investors talk about having two or three year investment time horizons but increasingly we have seen everyone focus on the latest news event and investment behaviour is being shaped by this, rather than fundamentals.. What do a Spanish clothing retailer, an Irish telecommunications group, a German maker of plastic packaging film and a French house-builder have in common?. They are all so-called "zombie" companies, bought by private equity in heavily leveraged deals shortly before the debt bubble burst last summer and now judged by investors to be worth less than they owe to creditors.. "These are zombies, companies with unsustainable financial structures but no triggers for the banks to force them to renegotiate," says Edward Eyerman, head of European leveraged finance at Fitch.. They include: Cortefiel, the Spanish clothing vendor acquired by PAI, Permira and CVC in 2005; Eircom, the Irish telecoms group bought by Babcock & Brown in 2006; and Klöckner Pentaplast, the German plastic film maker sold to Blackstone last year.. Cortefiels senior bank debt was recently quoted at 67 per cent of its par value, suggesting that the equity owned by the private equity firms is worthless.. Klöckner and Eircom also ...
We propose a theoretical model to explain two salient features of the U.S. stock exchange industry: (i) sizable dispersion and frequent changes in stock exchange fees; and (ii) the proliferation of stock exchanges offering identical transaction services, highlighting the role of discrete pricing. Exchange operators in the United States compete for order flow by setting "make" fees for limit orders ("makers") and "take" fees for market orders ("takers"). When traders can quote continuous prices, the manner in which operators divide the total fee between makers and takers is irrelevant because traders can choose prices that perfectly counteract any fee division. If such is the case, order flow consolidates on the exchange with the lowest total fee. The one-cent minimum tick size imposed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions Rule 612(c) of Regulation National Market Systems for traders prevents perfect neutralization and eliminates mutually agreeable trades at price levels within a tick. ...

The degree of comovement across national stock markets has increased dramatically since the mid-1990s. This has overturned a stylized fact in the international portfolio diversification literature that diversifying across countries is more effective for risk reduction than diversifying across industries. We investigate if this rise in comovement is a permanent phenomenon driven by greater economic and financial integration, or a temporary effect associated with the recent stock market bubble. At the global level, our results point to the bubble. At a regional level, we find evidence of a significant rise in market integration within Europe, possibly a reflection of institutional changes such as the EMU.
Here is an example of the way that schools are using the current financial crisis to teach students about the stock market and the importance of saving and investing at a young age. The program, called The Stock Market Game, allows students to use up to $100,000 of hypothetical money to buy, sell, and trade stocks over the course of a semester. Most students are losing money these days when they invest, but the teachers see it as a good opportunity to talk about using the stock market to invest in the long term, not just over a 10 or...
There are many tradeoffs between risk and return for investors planning for retirement. If you are like most planning for retirement, you are looking for the best possible yield at the lowest possible risk. This is where annuities come in. A deferred annuity is a safe and smart alternative to higher risk stock investments and the meager returns on savings accounts. Deferred annuities combine the security of your principle and a competitive rate of return to you, the investor.. Deferred annuities have long been the investment option of choice for many planning for retirement because any gains in the account are tax deferred until the money is withdrawn. How does this benefit you? When you are taxed on your gains (for example like in a bank certificate of deposit) you have less money available for interest to be compounded on. In a deferred annuity, these "would be" taxed dollars remain in your account and continue to grow until they are withdrawn. These increased gains result in a higher account ...

During 2007, ORAU convened five panels of experts in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pa., to conduct interim objective reviews of research into neurodegenerative diseases and tobacco use and cessation. Seventeen independent reviewers recruited by ORAU evaluated information provided by the principal investigators, including on-site presentations, to assess the research progress to date and the value of the investment as well as to identify any needed improvements.. Property investors are drawn to Egypt due to its warm sunshine, crystal seas and exotic culture, giving rise to a booming tourist industry on which to base their investment strategies
In the late 1990s, investor emotion played a significant role in inflating the dot-com bubble and ultimately, making a lot of people rich. Emotional excitement not only creates stock market bubble but research shows that the frenzy actually causes them to grow.
With the US dollar falling down a precipice, spare a thought for non-US investors invested in US stocks and bonds. The graph below shows the performance of US 10-year Treasury Notes since the beginning of March in both US dollar terms (red line) and euro terms (blue line). Whereas US investors are showing a poor return of -2.8% for the period, European investors are completely under water to the tune of -17.5%. For the year to date the figures are -4.8% (US dollar) and -10.5% (euro). (Although I am using the euro in this example, the same logic applies to most other non-US dollar currencies.). ...

As if an Orange Bowl championship and national basketball title werent enough already, Kansas University is riding its athletic prowess into unprecedented success in what just might be the most competitive market around.. High finance.. After winning on the football field and the basketball court, Kansas Athletics Inc. is cashing in through both donations and investments.. This week, the department will get a $29 million deposit for its construction account - proceeds from the sale of $32.8 million in athletics revenue bonds by the Kansas Development Finance Authority.. The bonds went on the market earlier this month and sold out within a day, with unusually high support from individual investors, officials said. Fewer than 30 percent of the bonds went to institutional investors, such as retirement funds, regional insurance companies and others that typically snap up more than half of such offerings.. Instead, individual investors - the large majority of them Kansans, and most of them ...
The risk trade is on. Investors sitting idly by on the sidelines watching everyone else make 70-100% since the March lows are resolved to the fact that risk-free investment returns are going to be negative in terms of even modest inflation for years to come. As such, investors in the income arena are increasingly shifting funds from safer bets like Treasuries and Money Markets into higher risk assets that actually delivery meaningful yield.. Last month, two high yield ETFs in particular saw massive investor inflows. SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond (JNK) and iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond (HYG) each saw inflows in excess of $400 Million in March. Starting in 2008 and into 2009, high yield corporate bonds (otherwise known as junk bonds) saw huge drops in price under the premise the America was going to see a massive wave of corporate defaults, the likes of which we hadnt seen since the Great Depression. While the current economy wouldnt be considered "strong" by any stretch of ...

I typically accumulate my positions over long periods of time. I currently add or initiate positions in 2- 3 stocks per month. At this rate, chances are that I purchase stock in a given company about once or twice per year. In the case of companies like McDonalds (MCD), this means that I bought stock in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. As long as the stock trades at less than $105/share, I might be able to add to my position in 2012 as well. Even if the stock zooms past $105/share, I would still have exposure to it, although I might invest my new funds elsewhere. Unlike other investors however, I do not avoid buying stocks simply because they "went up". Many investors missed the boat at McDonalds (MCD) at $70 or $80/share, because they figured that the stock has increased too fast, and thus waited for a dip before adding to their positions. This is the type of market timing, which should be avoided. Now, If investors didnt want to pay more than 15 times earnings, then waiting for the dip after ...
Big claims are made for the return on investment of employee wellbeing programmes, but how reliable is the evidence? Dr Paul J Nicholson looks research studies and analyses, and concludes it is misguided to allow profit alone to become the driving force behind employee wellbeing.

The canary in the financial coal mine is beginning to choke. Today the SEC announced that it is tightening the noose around investors. The latest to come out of the SEC is a significant piece of news to anyone who has a 401(k), and especially for those who rely on money market funds to safely park their money. The 2008 financial crisis saw some money funds the subject of runs, especially by institutional investors who are capable of moving large blocks of money with the push of a button. Since then, there has been an ongoing debate on what steps, if any, to take to prevent such a run in the future. The creation of capital controls is nothing new, and to some extent they have existed in money market funds for a number of years. Currently on the table are two distinct proposals. The first is directed at institutional investors ability to withdraw money during a time of financial crisis. The second proposal would grant fund boards that...(Read Full Post) ...

With the growing demand for animal feed and the overall increasing global demand for meat is driving people to look for another source of protein for livestock feed. A demand grows so does interest in the number of people and companies interested in the insect meal sector. $40 million of investor capital has already been invested in new companies involved in insect farming for animal feed. These are not just any investors, though. Big players like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are among the investors of this new insect meal sector. Another big company, the global bioscience company Intexron, purchased EnviroFlight, an insect meal producer. The Canadian insect meal company Enterra is already set to sell insect meal to the US for salmonids and in Canada for feed for poultry.. Insect meal is a much more cost effective way to feed animals than previously used soybeans and fishmeal. For one thing fishmeal has recently increased in price due to increased demand and restrictions on supply. ...
The fact is that most prominent dividend growth stocks sell goods or services that are used by consumers on an everyday basis. Since most of these goods and services are essentials, the demand for them does not fall off during an economic downturn. They might postpone purchasing a new car or a new computer by a few years. Even during a recession, people still eat, shower, drive and buy groceries. This ability helps dividend growth companies in earning a sufficient amount even during the most tumultuous times in order to pay a consistent and rising dividend to shareholders. The predictability of the amount and timing of dividend payments, makes these income stocks ideal for retired investors. The fact that dividend investors use distributions from their portfolios to fund their expenses, makes it real easy to live off their nest eggs. Dividend investors do not need to worry about bear markets and selling off shares at depressed prices, because they simply live off the dividends that their income ...

CECA is anticipating that the second Roads Investment Strategy will be published in the coming weeks, confirming Governments plans for £25.3bn investment in our strategic roads between 2020-25. Ongoing commitment to five-year cycles for roads spending is welcomed by industry, as they provide much greater project certainty, giving industry the confidence it needs to prepare for a substantial programme of work. While the latest proposed figure is less than the £29bn originally quoted, CECA remains optimistic about the new Governments commitment to road infrastructure, and the vital role it plays in driving economic growth. This has already been reflected in the Conservative Partys election manifesto to make a £28.8 billion investment in strategic and local roads and £1 billion in rapid electric vehicle charging. When RIS 2 is announced, we hope that it will confirm the critical infrastructure needed to future proof the strategic road network by committing to projects such as the Lower ...
