Downloadable! This paper analyzes the causality between inventor productivity and inventor mobility. The results show that the level of education has no influence on inventor productivity. Making use of external sources of knowledge, on the contrary, has a significant effect on productivity. Finally, firm size has a positive impact on productivity. Firm size also influences inventor mobility, although negatively. Whereas existing research implicitly assumes causality to point in one direction, this study ex-ante allows for a simultaneous relationship. To deal with the expected endogeneity problem, instrumental variables techniques will be employed. Results show that mobile inventors are more than four times as productive as non-movers. Whereas mobility increases productivity, an increase in productivity decreases the number of moves.
Expert authors Curtis Waguespack and Thom Tremblay developed this detailed reference and tutorial with straightforward explanations, real-world examples, and practical tutorials that focus squarely on teaching Inventor tips, tricks, and techniques. The authors extensive experience across industries and their Inventor expertise allows them to teach the software in the context of real-world workflows and work environments. They present topics that are poorly documented elsewhere, such as design tactics for large assemblies, effective model design for different industries, strategies for effective data and asset sharing across teams, using 2D and 3D data from other CAD systems, and improving designs by incorporating engineering principles. Mastering Inventor 2011 begins with an overview of Inventor design concepts and application before exploring all aspects of part design, including sketching, basic and advanced modeling techniques, working with sheet metal, and part editing. The book then looks ...

Downloadable! According to Schumpeter, the creative process of economic development can be divided into three distinguishable stages of invention, innovation (commercialization) and imitation. We show why there is a rationale for the Schumpeterian entrepreneur to also include the inventor in the innovation process. In addition, we provide a framework where the theories of Knights risk defining entrepreneur and Schumpeters innovative entrepreneur can be bridged. Merging the two enhances the possibilities of successful commercialization since the inventor may further adapt the innovation to customer needs, transmit information and reduce uncertainty. This serves to expand the market opportunities for the entrepreneur. The empirical analysis is based on a survey covering Swedish patents granted to individuals and small firms, with a response rate of 80 %. The results show improved commercialization performance when the patent is licensed or sold to an entrepreneur, or if the inventor is employed in an

Two Bellshill based inventors are making a carbon monoxide detector after one of their daughters almost died due to poisoning from the gas.. Scott Wallace from Airdrie and Billy Mitchell from Glasgow started their company, Smart Compliance, in 2010 setting out to help prevent people from dying from CO poisoning.. Billys daughter Carolanne nearly died after suffering from the poisoning in her Livingston flat in 2010.. The Glasgow inventor admitted it was something which prompted him and Scott to develop the product. He said: "It was a brand new flat she had moved into and the boiler downstairs was right underneath the grill for the tumble drier, which has been fitted with the wrong plate.. "She had to be rushed to hospital and was put on oxygen for six hours.". Billy said that it was one of the main factors in the decision to go ahead with the idea.. They designed, invented and patented a CO detector, named Butterfly, which could be ready for full production early 2013 and has now received the ...

To invent, I have said, is to choose; but the word is perhaps not wholly exact. It makes one think of a purchaser before whom are displayed a large number of samples, and who examines them, one after the other, to make a choice. Here the samples would be so numerous that a whole lifetime would not suffice to examine them. This is not the actual state of things. The sterile combinations do not even present themselves to the mind of the inventor. Never in the field of his consciousness do combinations appear that are not really useful, except some that he rejects but which have to some extent the characteristics of useful combinations. All goes on as if the inventor were an examiner for the second degree who would only have to question the candidates who had passed a previous examination. ...
Daniel French (1770-1853), a "Yankee" inventor, was born in Berlin, Connecticut. From an early age French strove to become a "mechanician," an artisan trained in the theory of mechanics and skilled in the working of metals at increasing levels of precision. His friend Oliver Evans, an accomplished engineer, described French as an "original and ingenious inventor." Frenchs most significant invention was the horizontally mounted, high-pressure, non-condensing, directly connected steam engine for mills, boats, etc. French was awarded a patent for his steam engine in 1809.[1] This type of engine became standard on the western steamboat. In 1807 Robert Fulton placed on the Hudson River the steamboat North River (aka Clermont) which was powered by a low pressure Boulton and Watt steam engine. The heavy and inherently inefficient engine required an increase in the size, and hence the weight, of the steam cylinder for an increase in power. Mounting the cylinder vertically, Fulton "invented" a complex ...
A common misunderstanding is that patents exist to protect inventors from anyone stealing their discoveries without a legitimate retribution. In the days before patents, inventors (individuals or companies) had a simple way to protect their inventive craft: keeping it secret, so that no-one could copy it. And often the new technique would be lost after the death of the inventors. Patents were introduced to stop this loss of knowledge, by establishing a contract: the inventor would publish his discovery in detail, and in return all people in society would have to pay him for the right to use his inventions for a given time after his invention was made public. So the original and most important aim of patents is to encourage scientific and technological discoveries and their open distribution (protecting inventors is just a means, not a goal).. Patents are vital in todays world: the most obvious sector in which they are useful is the pharmaceutical industry: after spending 10-15 years developing ...

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1958, Ellen Ochoa is probably the best known example of a successful Hispanic inventor and innovator. With an undergraduate degree in physics and a masters and doctorate in electrical engineering, she served as a researcher at Sandia National Laboratories and NASAs Ames Research Center and is the co-inventor of three optics-related US Patents (4,674,824, 4,838,644, and 4,949,389). However, more famously, Ochoa was the first Hispanic woman astronaut, participating in four space shuttle flights for a total of 978 hours in space. Her first trip was a nine-day mission in 1993 to conduct atmospheric and solar studies from the space shuttle Discovery, which you can visit at the Smithsonians Udvar-Hazy Center. The following year she was the Payload Commander on the Atlantis mission. She returned to the Discovery in 1999 to help perform the first shuttle docking to the International Space Station, and her final flight was on Atlantis in 2002.. In 2012, Ochoa became ...

Harry Wesley Coover Jr., known as the inventor of super glue, has died. He was 94. Coover died Saturday at his home in Kingsport, Tenn, said his grandson, Adam Paul of South Carolina. No cause was given. Coover was working for Tennessee Eastman Co., a division of Eastman Kodak, when an accident helped lead to the popular adhesive being discovered, Paul said. An assistant was distressed that some new prisms were ruined when they were glued together by the substance. Coover and another researcher recognized the potential for the strong adhesive, and it was first sold in 1958, according to...

Minor features of a product that we have invented.. Adding useful features to an existing product is a great way to create a successful invention, because we know that the product has demand and a market channel through which to reach buyers. We also know that our potential customers recognize the existing product, and need only a short introduction to its new feature.. Inventing a novel product means that we have to convince potential licensees that a waiting market really exists - usually, a difficult goal to achieve unless we produce and sell before attempting to license. Such strategy is usually expensive, time consuming and risky.. An example of a very useful feature that was added to an invention that most of us use every day is the dimming feature on our cars rear-view mirror. The rear-view mirror was invented by Dorothy Levitt in 1906, and remained substantially unimproved until a number of inventors, in the early 1960s, began thinking of ways to dim the blinding high-beam reflections ...

Published: 10 Nov 2010. On Wednesday morning children from across South West London and Surrey who have had their lives transformed by a cochlear implant, or bionic ear, got the chance to meet the devices inventor Professor Graeme Clark at St Georges Hospital.. Professor Clark met several children and their families, including seven year old Amie Lundberg, the first patient to have the implant at St Georges, and her brother Jack, who had his second cochlear implant earlier this year, to find out how their lives have been changed since their operations.. A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to send sound signals to the brain.. Professor Clark was at St Georges Hospital to open a two day cochlear implant course for surgeons from across the UK and Europe. St Georges Hospital was chosen to host the course by ...
