Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) represents a severe, T cell-driven inflammatory complication following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). GVHD often affects the intestine and is associated with a poor prognosis. Although frequently detectable, proinflammatory mechanisms exerted by intestinal tissue-infiltrating Th cell subsets remain to be fully elucidated. Here, we show that the Th17-defining transcription factor basic leucine zipper transcription factor ATF-like (BATF) was strongly regulated across human and mouse intestinal GVHD tissues. Studies in complete MHC-mismatched and minor histocompatibility-mismatched (miHA-mismatched) GVHD models revealed that BATF-expressing T cells were functionally indispensable for intestinal GVHD manifestation. Mechanistically, BATF controlled the formation of colon-infiltrating, IL-7 receptor-positive (IL-7R+), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor-positive (GM-CSF+), donor T effector memory (Tem) cells. This T cell ...

I am convinced the major cause of bowel problems is an inappropriate diet. It is therefore this aspect I will mainly concentrate on in this post. It is essential that the diet is a high fibre one. The best food sources of fibre are wholegrain cereals, wholemeal or rye bread, brown rice, wholegrain pasta, dried apricots. almonds, celery, dates, dried figs, raspberries, French beans, prunes, plumbs, kidney beans, and potatoes with their skins. You should consume 40 grams (1.5 ounces) of fibre per day. Other foods which help to prevent bowel problems include cabbage, cherries, grapes , leeks, melons, oranges, peaches rhubarb, strawberries, olive oil, and live natural yogurt. ...

Syndromic congenital tufting enteropathy (CTE) is a life-threatening recessive human genetic disorder that is caused by mutations in SPINT2, encoding the protease inhibitor HAI-2, and is characterized by severe intestinal dysfunction. We recently reported the generation of a Spint2-deficient mouse model of CTE. Here, we show that the CTE-associated early-onset intestinal failure and lethality of Spint2-deficient mice is caused by unchecked activity of the serine protease matriptase. Macroscopic and histological defects observed in the absence of HAI-2, including villous atrophy, luminal bleeding, loss of mucin-producing goblet cells, loss of defined crypt architecture and the resulting acute inflammatory response in the large intestine, were all prevented by intestinal-specific inactivation of the St14 gene encoding matriptase. The CTE-associated loss of the cell junctional proteins EpCAM and claudin 7 was also prevented. As a result, inactivation of intestinal matriptase allowed ...

The ENS also produces numerous hormones and about 40 different neurotransmitters of the exact same type found in the brain. In fact, 95 percent of all the serotonin found in the body at any one time is in the ENS. It is generally thought that the serotonin produced in the ENS can reach the brain because of the blood/brain barrier, but that is being questioned now. It has been well established, however, that the nerve signals from the gut to the brain, passing along the vagus nerve, do affect our mood. Stimulating the vagus nerve has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression ...

For some reason, many treat acute intestinal infections in children with antibiotics. Especially popular is levomycetin. But you need to consider that most of the OCI are viruses. Perioperative lidocaine treatment is commonly used in horses that undergo surgical treatment of colic, to prevent or treat postoperative ileus and reduce the effects of intestinal ischaemia-reperfusion injury. However, its clinical efficacy has not been evaluated in a large population of horses undergoing small intestinal surgery. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether systemic lidocaine administration reduced the prevalence, volume and duration of postoperative reflux and improved rates of survival following surgical treatment of small intestinal lesions. Data were collected as a part of two prospective studies investigating postoperative survival of surgical colic patients admitted to a UK equine referral hospital during the periods 2004-2006 and 2012-2014. Kaplan-Meier plots of cumulative probability of survival and the log-rank test were used to compare survival between horses that did or did not receive lidocaine. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to compare the total reflux volume
Surgical treatment of endometriosis by bilateral oophorectomy with or without hysterectomy is usually regarded as curative therapy, even though residual disease may remain. It is used in patients with sufficient pain who have failed previous therapies and who do not desire future fertility. Despite this therapy, this study demonstrates that endometriosis can remain symptomatic after castration, with or without estrogen therapy. In such patients, there is a 33% frequency of intestinal involvement. Therefore, at castration, consideration should be given to removal of invasive peritoneal and intestinal disease. Symptom improvement occurs in most patients after excision of endometriosis. ...

In cases of acute or chronic intestinal failure, intestine transplant comes to the rescue as it constitutes surgically removing the diseased portion of the small intestine, which is then replaced with a healthy small intestine from a donor.
Operative small bowel resection specimens received over a period of 16 years were reviewed to assess whether any intestinal disease could be directly attributed to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). Seven cases of intestinal disease associated with the use of NSAID were identified, all of which occurred in the final six years of the survey, which may reflect the increasing use of these compounds. A spectrum of patterns was found from multiple pathognomonic ileal mucosal diaphragms to broad strictures similar to those seen as a complication of enteric potassium. It seems likely that the formation of diaphragm lesions requires an additional factor, but what is not known as yet is whether the effects of NSAID are local or systemic.. ...

Precise activity assessment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is essential to determine the extent and severity of the disease for further specific therapy. Nevertheless, despite ongoing developments in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy, the final diagnosis still relies on the interpretation of histopathological features of intestinal biopsies taken during the endoscopic examination. Recently, endocytoscopy (EC) was introduced as a new endoscopic imaging modality, enabling microscopic imaging within the mucosal layer of the gut at a magnification level of up to 1400-fold ...
BACKGROUND: Cases reported to national surveillance systems commonly form the sampling frame for population-based case-control studies of infectious intestinal diseases (IID). However, reported cases represent a minority of all cases in the population, differ systematically from unreported cases, and their use in case-control studies could introduce biases. Case reporting is a selective process involving multiple stages, the first of which requires presentation by a symptomatic person to the health services. Factors affecting a persons likelihood of presentation will thus affect the characteristics of reported cases. METHODS: Data from a large study of IID in England were used to investigate factors influencing presentation to a general practitioner (GP) following an episode of IID. Multivariable logistic regression was performed, comparing GP presenters with non-presenters. Explanatory variables used were illness severity, recent foreign travel and socioeconomic indicators. RESULTS: Severe ...

Signs depend upon the amount of blockage, the location of the object, and whether the object is irritating or non-irritating in nature. Common signs include vomiting, abdominal discomfort, reduces appetite, an absence of stools and vague uneasiness. While some foreign objects can be passed with the aid of lubricants or laxatives, many can only be removed by endoscopy or surgery. Radiographs (x-rays) are used to determine the nature and location of the object, and assess the likelihood of passage without surgery. In most cases, surgical removal is the only effective means of treatment ...

PY - 1997/7/4. Y1 - 1997/7/4. N2 - Pigs aged from neonate to 8 weeks with naturally occurring diarrhoea were submitted to a Veterinary Investigation Centre for routine diagnosis. They were retrospectively found to be infected with attaching and effacing E. coli (AEEC) on histological and ultrastructural examination of the intestinal tract. Subcultures of E. coli isolated from some of the affected pigs were tested against standard anti-sera and probed for the presence of verotoxin (VT) and eae genes. One strain of E. coli was positive for the VT gene and three VT-negative strains possessed the eae gene. This preliminary report suggests that in naturally occurring diarrhoea of suckling and weaned pigs, AEEC infection can be identified by histological examination of the intestinal mucosa and confirmed by ...

A Review Of Intestinal Disease. The intestinal tract is known as stomach conditions or mucosal diseases. Amongst all the significant body organs influenced by these illness, the gastrointestinal tract is just one of the most typically impacted and subsequently, has the highest possible morbidity price. It is also among the leading causes of death around the world. Misdiagnosis of a stomach disease prevails since many patients with short-tempered digestive tract syndrome do not have any type of identifiable cause for their symptoms. Nevertheless, it is very important to develop the etiology of symptoms in order to establish therapy. Short-tempered digestive tract disorder (IBS) is one of the most typical intestinal condition. This is an useful disorder that triggers abdominal discomfort, uneven motions, looseness of the bowels, irregularity, nausea as well as throwing up. IBS is an auto-immune disorder that produces over-active stomach secretions as well as uncommon experiences (such as a ...

Replied on 04/19/2011 Was a biopsy sent in to a veterinary histopathologist when the lump was removed? If so then the type of tumor that was present will give you an indication of whether this tumor is one that spreads or metastasizes and where it is likely to spread to. Given her history its likely that her original tumor has spread to her liver or the lymph nodes in her abdomen causing the weight gain and increased appetite.. Another possibility in an older dog is that the weight gain in her abdomen is fluid accumulating because of organ failure, an intestinal disease or heart disease. Usually these dogs have other symptoms such as a lack of appetite, a cough, vomiting or diarrhea.. Your dog would benefit from an examination, radiographs of her abdomen and bloodwork to determine why her abdomen is swelling. No matter what the cause is its possible that she may be made more comfortable with medication once you know what the cause is.. ...

Metabolic disorders, as well as congenital liver and intestinal disease, although rare, are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiology of these type of diseases is often not well understood, especially as the basic defect is not known yet. Our research group has been essential in identifying genes causing a number of these diseases: PFIC, ARC, MVID, STX3 deficiency, MCT1 deficiency, ARS deficiency, ANKZF1 deficiency, GLS hyperactivity and CHAPLE syndrome. Based on these discoveries new therapies could be developed and are still being developed.
