The principle of interprofessional learning and practice is a fundamental criterion that guides multidisciplinary teams in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). The professional action, however, seems to be marked by a logic characterized by the narrow boundaries of the territories of each category as a scene of contention between the contradictory logics of professionalization and interprofessional practice. This is understood as the synthesis of a process of integration of knowledge and interprofessional collaboration.. These processes are mediated by affects. Considering that there are several obstacles to the realization of the interprofessional learning and practice, the research aims to understand the dynamics of inter-relationships in the production of care in the family´s health strategy, exploiting the existence of conditions of possibility for the construction of interprofessional learning and practice.. This is a qualitative case study inspired by hermeneutics. The scenario is a study of ...
Overcoming Barriers to Interprofessional Communication: How Can Situational Judgement Dilemmas Help? by Frances Varian, Dr Anne-Marie Feeley and Dr James Coe
This regional collaborative will create training programs applicable for medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, behavioral health, social work, public health, and allied health at UIC and at regional IPE partner institutions. The program builds on the CEIPE experience developing, delivering and evaluating interprofessional education programs for students in seven health sciences colleges at UIC and will benefit from the innovative HIV education work underway by Dr. Memoona Hasnain and colleagues in UIC Department of Family Medicine (UIC DFM) and Internal Medicine, teaching trainees to work in interprofessional teams to acquire core clinical knowledge about HIV as well as core competencies closely related to the four domains of interprofessional competency identified by IPEC (understanding of roles and responsibilities, teams and teamwork, values and ethics relevant to collaborative practice, and interprofessional communication). Year 1 will be dedicated to the development and design of the ...
The aim of this study was to describe and interpret interprofessional collaboration between healthcare professionals (HCPs) working at the district psychiatric centre (DPC) and employed in community mental health care (CMHC) using a dialogue-oriented co-operative approach. Data were collected by means of multistage focus groups and qualitative content analysis was performed. The main theme “development of interprofessional collaboration by means of organisational strategies and interactional styles” encompassed the following categories: “improved communication skills,” “developing structures for coordination and responsibility” and “ increased professional insight into the values and conditions necessary for decision-making.” In conclusion, more attention should be paid to leadership in terms of coordination and feedback. The HCPs must be acknowledged, understood and strengthened in their work to improve the quality of CMHC. Finally, we recommend

Background The present study protocol describes the trial design of a primary care intervention cohort study, which examines whether an extended, multi-professional physical activity referral (PAR) intervention is more effective in enhancing and maintaining self-reported physical activity than ordinary physical activity recommendations. The study targets patients with newly diagnosed hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes.. Secondary outcomes include: need of pharmacological therapy; blood pressure/plasma glucose; physical fitness and anthropometric variables; mental health; health related quality of life; and cost-effectiveness. Methods/Design The study is designed as a long-term intervention. Three primary care centres are involved in the study, each constituting one of three treatment groups: 1) Intervention group (IG): multi-professional team intervention with PAR, lifestyle brochure; 2) Control group A (CA): ordinary recommendations on health behaviours, lifestyle brochure; and 3) Control ...
At the heart of safe cultures are effective interactions within and between interprofessional teams. Critical care clinicians see severely ill patients who require coordinated interprofessional care. In this scoping review, we asked: What do we know about processes, relationships, organizational and contextual factors that shape the ability of clinicians to deliver interprofessional care in adult ICUs? Using the 5-stage process established by Levac et al. (2010), we reviewed 981 abstracts to identify ethnographic articles that shed light on interprofessional care in the intensive care unit. The quality of selected articles is assessed using best practices in ethnographic research; their main insights evaluated in light of an interprofessional framework developed by Reeves et al (Interprofessional Teamwork for Health and Social Care. San Francisco, CA: Wiley-Blackwell; 2010). Overall, studies were of mixed quality, with an average (SD) score of 5.8 out of 10 (1.77). Insights into intensive care ...

4.2 Consulting There is a difference between consulting and collaboration. Collaboration involves equals, on the same footing, each contributing his/her expertise to the problem. It involves communication about all aspects of the work and some give-and-take. It inv olves a learning experience for both parties. It takes time to establish the trust required for a good professional working relationship with someone. On the other hand, consulting is more service-oriented. Generally, the statistician is there to advise t he client about design, about which tests are appropriate, and so on. The role of the statistician depends on both the problem and the type of work that is rewarded by your department. 4.2.1 Departmental Policy Find out what your departments expectations are with respect to consulting. Do they value collaborative research or is consulting a service your department provides to other researchers? Will your effort count towards promotion? Your level of commitment should take this into ...

Arguably, Medical School curricula are deficient in learning opportunities related to the safe and effective use of medicines, in particular antimicrobials. Infection management is complex and multidisciplinary, and learning opportunities should reflect these principles. Aligned to the complexity of the subject matter, simulation and interprofessional based teaching are methods that can foster the collaborative skills required of future healthcare professionals. There have been calls to develop these methods in the teaching of safe prescribing and the management of infections; however, reports of such studies are limited. We developed an interprofessional education (IPE) conference for second year undergraduate medical and pharmacy students based in the North East of England. We considered contact theory in the design of three small group interprofessional workshops, on the broad themes of antimicrobial stewardship, infection management and patient safety. A mixed methods approach assessed students

Our data highlight the professionalism, respect and adaptability of these junior health professionals. We document the types of collaborative activities and tensions relevant in this context and, based on our findings, provide some strategies for improving IPC.
The results of this study confirm our moderated mediation hypotheses for financial barriers only. This suggests that IPC degree within integrated care initiatives was associated with patient care improvements through organisational improvements. However, this was less observed in initiatives facing financial barriers for the implementation of integrated care.. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating whether the association between the degree of IPC in integrated care and patient care improvements is mediated by organisational improvements. In fact, our results complement the current literature about the impact of IPC on job satisfaction and well-being [11], suggesting that organisational improvements are necessary for IPC to improve patient care in integrated care initiatives. In other words, IPC interventions should adopt a systemic approach to achieve patient care improvements. This is in line with conceptual models considering care outcomes as products of interacting elements. ...

To all the doctors out there,. I think its time we have a chat. Really, its not fair to limit this talk to just doctors, though. This is really to all medical professionals. Doctors, nurses, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, and so many others. Its time for us to talk about the things that so many of your patients are thinking and feeling but cant bring themselves to say to you.. There is a basic formula for how the doctor-patient relationship must work in order for people to remain healthy. It goes a little something like this:. competent and compassionate doctor + cooperative patient = relatively good health. There is one rather large component missing here, though. None of this will work, not one bit of it, without trust. Trust is the MOST critical piece of the working relationship between doctors and patients. The trust between medical professionals and patients is absolutely critical. If patients dont trust their doctors to really listen to them and ...
Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is the most chronic childhood disease and more predominant in low-income and underserved children. Although easily transmitted, ECC is entirely preventable. Dr. Ramos-Gomez and his team at the University of California, Los Angeles put together an interprofessional curriculum where both medical and dental knowledge and practice is integrated to prepare dentists and primary care providers to more cost effectively address ECC and thereby reduce disparities in oral health. The curriculum, known as the Strategic Partnership for Interprofessional Collaborative Education in Pediatric Dentistry (SPICE-PD), consists of nine evidence-based training modules: applied statistics and research, community partners, interprofessional education/training, quality improvement, policy and advocacy, disease management/risk assessment, ethics/professionalism, cultural competency and children with special heath-care needs ...
a) Tell me about what typically occurs when someone with Medicare insurance contacts your office in search of counseling? and (b) Tell me about any times when you have had to alter a pre-existing working relationship with a client because of their Medicare coverage? Follow-up questions focused on the impact of current Medicare mental health policy on the interviewees, as well as their perceived impact on clients, local communities, other therapists in the area, and their employment contexts.. Data Analysis. The IPA process outlined by Smith et al. (2009) was employed to analyze the transcribed interview data. The following steps were employed throughout the analysis process: (a) reading and re-reading of transcripts, (b) initial noting, (c) developing emergent themes, (d) searching for connections across emergent themes, (e) moving to the next case, and (f) looking for patterns across cases. Codes and themes developed at each stage of the first transcript analysis required consensus agreement ...

Primary care providers are involved not only in the medical care of the child but also involved in supporting the childs emotional and developmental needs (1-3). A major barrier to productive working relationships between child care and health care professionals is inadequate communication (1,2). Knowing who is treating the child and coordinating services with these sources of service is vital to the ability of the caregivers/teachers to offer appropriate care to the child. Every child should have a medical home and those with special health care needs may have additional specialists and therapists (4-7). The primary care provider and needed specialists will create the Care Plan which will be the blueprint for healthy and safe inclusion into child care for the child with special health care needs.. ...

Mandatory reporting is also yet another attack on the professionalism of many workers who are considered incapable of making reporting decisions without a law. Already surrounded by bureaucracy, guidance, managerialism and procedures this will be yet another form of direction imposed on the practitioner. Who needs three years of study when its all in the book? Anyone else noticed that probation officers no longer need any qualifications in future?. Other questions arise. Will mandatory reporting have an impact on the therapeutic process? Will people be less open with their therapist knowing the worker has no margin of discretion and less confidential space to work in? If a report has to be made what will happen to the working relationship that had been established?. Mandatory reporting is not the panacea it appears at first sight and in the rush to do something we may end up with a worse situation than we have now..
