By Kaylee Franklin. For some students, this semester looks different than any other. International students are taking classes at Trevecca from all across the world. Students from Honduras, Trinidad, and Thailand carry the burden. A lot of our international students arent here on campus, some of them are studying elsewhere. Weve been working on making sure they feel involved and helping them feel prepared for whatever comes next, said Brodrick Thomas, director of community engagement and reconciliation. employee voice and how voice can be used both as a means of protest in relation to the wider political agenda as well as means for employees to address workplace concerns and engage in decision making. The session raised some interesting questions including: What voice is for? And what role is there for public policy and legislation in supporting and protecting employee voice? What emerged from the session was evidence not only of a multi-form system of employee voice, but also a challenge to the notion that employee voice is purely about business performance. Voice also provides employees with an opportunity to participate in the running of the organisation, to enhance the quality of working life, demonstrate respect for employees and prevent differences becoming difficulties and difficulties becoming disputes. But despite the diversification of channels of communication have the issues addressed by employee voice become narrower and less meaningful? Employee voice can also be part of much ...

There is a trend for more and more students to go abroad to study in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia to gain a broader education.[citation needed] English is the only common language spoken at universities in these countries, with the most significant exception being Francophone universities in Canada. International students not only need to acquire good communication skills and fluent English both in writing and speaking, but also absorb the Western academic writing culture in style, structure, reference, and the local policy toward academic integrity in academic writing.[77] International students may have difficulty completing satisfactory assignments because of the difficulty with grammar and spelling, differences in culture, or a lack of confidence in English academic writing. Insightful opinions may lose the original meaning when transformed from the students native language to English. Even if international students acquire good scores in English proficiency exams or are able to ...

This study examined the relationship between International Students stereotypes of Americans and their adjustment to the United States. The research sought to show International Students stereotypes of the United States before they arrived, if these stereotypes had effected the students adjustment to the United States, and if so, how. The study also showed how these stereotypes had changed since arrival, and what might have influenced the formulation of these stereotypes. The method used was a questionnaire with both scaled and open-ended questions to document the students perceptions of the United States. The participants answers were then compared to see whether those whose perceptions had changed the most, were further on Adlers cultural adjustment cycle (1975). The conclusions determined that pre-arrival stereotypes influence international students adjustment to the United States. Students who had more media exposure and interaction with American culture prior to arrival had more

Physiotherapy programmes must prepare graduates to live and work in a globally interconnected society. Internationalised learning experiences have the potential to break down ethnocentric worldviews by exposing students to analysis and critique of practice from different cultural perspectives. Such experiences may enable transformative learning by developing the students ability to shift perspective and reflect critically on how disciplinary practice can change with the social context. Opportunities to study abroad can only be offered to a minority of students. In contrast, digital technology such as discussion forums and video conferencing provide an inclusive platform to make international experiences available to all students on a programme. The aim of this educational project was to engage physiotherapy students in a transnational collaborative group task in order to increase awareness of different international perspectives on clinical practice and healthcare provision and facilitate ...
It is often claimed in the Danish debate that Denmarks climate efforts are far ahead of all other countries. Focusing solely on the real reduction of greenhouse gases, the Danish Council on Climate Change shows that Denmark takes second place in comparison to 10 other wealthy countries and this is largely due to the fact that Denmark has had lower economic growth than in the other countries.. However, if one focuses on the contribution to this reduction which is made by the green transition, Denmark ranks in fourth place out of the analysis of 11 countries behind the United Kingdom, Sweden and the Netherlands. This contribution measures the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions relative to GDP, a measurement which assesses the action required to allow us to produce more without emitting additional greenhouse gases.. A working paper and fact sheet on Denmarks climate efforts in an international context can be downloaded from the menu.. The subject of Denmarks climate efforts in an ...
View more ,The Emergence of the Failed State: Tales of Globalisation and the Demise of the Nation State The failed state emerged more than two decades ago in the wake of globalisation, concomitantly with its widely assumed implication that the nation state as we had known it would soon become obsolete. If indeed globalisation and the massive social and economic changes that it would entail emerged as an irresistible force that limited the realm of national politics and governments, and the impact of citizens on their national polity, why then should the failure of one or more states be anything but what could be expected when globalisation finally took hold? When taking the hyperglobalisers perspective seriously, according to Held and his colleagues (Held, McGrew, Goldblatt and Perraton 2006), failed states appear to be the vanguard of globalisation rather than a major threat to the security of the global economy, and to the process of globalisation itself (Esty et al. 1995; Esty et al. ...

The resources for dealing with these problems are limited in many countries. Public health education about poisons and infrastructure limiting access and exposure to the most highly toxic chemicals are practically absent in much of the developing world. Access to medical care is often limited for financial, cultural, and geographic reasons. Medical toxicology is frequently not a recognized specialty and patients are evaluated by general physicians with little training-although often with great experience. Diagnostic facilities are few, effective treatment options even more rare. Where antidotes exist, there is rarely enough knowledge or experience to use them effectively.30 Intensive care beds for invasive monitoring and long-term ventilation are scarce. This chapter outlines some of the major poisoning risks and challenges for medical toxicology in the developing world. ...

Despite the increase in methodological sophistication and complexity of models being tested for international student adjustment to universities in the United States (U.S.), researchers often do not test or control for salient demographic differences between students, including their educational status (i.e., graduate or undergraduate) and country in which they graduated high school. The current study was designed to examine whether demographic variables are associated with a range of social outcomes. Participants (N = 245) from 23 U.S. colleges and universities completed a survey in Fall 2017. Undergraduate students reported having a higher number of close friends at their institution than did graduate students; however, they also reported a lower sense of belonging than did graduate students. Students who graduated from high school in the United States reported less social support from international students at university. Implications for students and for future research are

With a marked increase in the number of international students enrolling in university programs across the globe it is important that personal and professional experiences are positive. Of interest is the workplace component of international students study programs, as these experiences provide opportunities for students to socialise into new workplaces and cultural contexts. This chapter presents a theoretical model that takes into account the relationship between the concepts of internationalisation, professional socialisation, reflection and cultural development. It explores Knights (1999) work on internationalisation; research on personal and professional socialisation; effective reflective practice; and the notion of cultural development (Wells, 2000). We argue that an enhanced ethos approach, together with strong personal and professional student and staff agency and reflective practice, enhances the work placement experience. If all these elements are taken into account and the ...

University XX participated in an NSF sponsored cross institutional study for assessing the spectrum of international undergraduate engineering educational experiences. XX was one of eleven schools that participated in the spring of 2016 (several more schools will be added in Fall 2016). The PIs formed a multidisciplinary team from four universities (Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4) which investigates how the broad spectrum of international experiences both in and outside of formal curricula impact engineering students global preparedness. Its four major objectives are delineated into three separate, but interconnected studies (i.e., Delphi, mixed-methods, and cross-institutional) combined with a dissemination system. The author presents an analysis of the preliminary University XX results of the third study within this work, an in-depth study to analyze engineering students global preparedness as the result of their academic and non-academic international experiences. International student flows from emerging and developing countries have grown tremendously over the last decades. In this paper, we address the question of whether donors, who might care about the potential brain drain effects student emigration entails in the countries of origin, can affect the student outflows through their foreign aid activities. Employing standard gravity-type approaches of international migration, we separately analyse the impact of scholarships for students from developing countries, and of development projects in recipient countries aimed at improving the local quality of tertiary education. We find that these two types of post-secondary aid lead to opposite effects on student mobility. Investing in the quality of tertiary education in recipient countries appears to be associated with lower outflows of tertiary educated students to donor countries, which corroborates previous research showing that aid may reduce emigration from developing countries if it improves public ...
Accommodation is one of the biggest costs associated with studying away from home, and is therefore an area students and their parents will look at carefully when deciding between institutions and locations. This may be particularly true when two institutions are comparable on other measures, but one stands out for the quality, comfort, or innovativeness of housing available to students.. This is especially the case for international students, who are not only living far from home but also surrounded by new cultures and languages. Safe, comfortable, and affordable housing is a must - both for the peace of mind of students and their families but also for academic success.. Whether a student is domestic or international, housing is a significant element of their study experience. Indeed, as many international educators know well, problems with accommodations can overshadow an otherwise exceptional programme, classroom, or campus. Students come to school to study, but they also carry hopes of ...

Dear Four Corners,. A while back, you aired a program presenting all the ways international students are ostensibly lowering the standards of Australian universities. Some especially noteworthy points you made were that a) international students cannot speak a single word of English and are hence a terrible danger when released into the wilderness of the Australian workplace, b) breaking news: we went undercover and this one time we found out that you can buy essays online and c) Australian universities give concessions to international students because they rely on them for money and this is actually the fault of the students.. Now, while its commendable that youre so concerned about the state of Australian education, you also grossly sensationalised the situation and made a series of one-off events seem like a nationwide trend. You raised some good points (really just one good point, that the discussion around international students is one that we need to have), but also completely failed to ...
Over the years, I have been frequently asked if it was hard to come to the United States as an international student and if there were a lot of differences between my life back home and the culture in the U.S. Naturally, the answer to those questions is a resounding Yes!. First, let me introduce myself.. My name is Luis Duque.; I am originally from Colombia, and I came to the U.S. in 2012 to begin my B.S. in civil engineering at South Dakota State University. You may be wondering how I ended up in South Dakota of all places. The short and simple answer is that I was recruited to play tennis for the university.. My entire life I have been shy and introverted. I did not enjoy speaking to big crowds at all and only had a few very close friends. However, as you advance in your career and accomplish goals, you will likely be faced with speaking in front of crowds. My first time learning this was my senior year of high school when I had to give the valedictorian graduation speech in front of the ...
