The purpose of this resource is to evaluate the feasibility and perceived educational value among internal medicine interns as related to the Palliative Care Clinical Exercise (CEX), a new experience-based intervention to teach communication skills in giving bad news and discussing code status. The intervention allows faculty to observe, evaluate, and give feedback to house staff based on their actual discussions with patients and families. A PowerPoint presentation, instructional materials, and all necessary surveys and logs are provided. The intervention was implemented among the entire 2002-2003 cohort of 60 interns in the categorical Internal Medicine Residency Programs at the University of Pittsburgh. This vision was focused more sharply in 2006 with the creation of the Department of Geriatrics, which was the result of a community collaboration that included Premier Health Partners, the Dayton VA Medical Center and the Oscar Boonshoft family. Now, the department works collaboratively with the schools other departments, affiliated hospitals and many area agencies and organizations to promote comprehensive geriatric care across all settings. Like previous studies,1-14 the ARTIST trial confirms that many physical symptoms are highly prevalent in primary care patients who present with clinical depression. This study extends our understanding of physical symptoms in the presence of depression, by establishing a time course for improvement in individual symptoms with the treatment of depression and by determining the relative impact that physical symptoms and depression have on various domains of HRQoL. Strengths of the ARTIST study include its large sample size, random assignment to an SSRI agent, outcome assessment with multiple measures during both acute and maintenance periods of depression therapy, and a study design representative of actual clinical practice.. Background: Many different components factor into the final grade assigned for the internal medicine clerkship. Failure of one or more of these requires consideration of remedial measures. Purpose: To determine which assessment components are used to assign students a passing grade for the clerkship and what remediation measures are required when students do not pass a component. Methods: A national cross-sectional survey of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) institutional members was conducted in April 2011. The survey included sections on remediation, grading practices, and demographics. The authors analyzed responses using descriptive and comparative statistics. Results: Response rate was 73% (86/113).
