Interorganizational system standards have reached a new era in industry. An era that has largely been overlooked in research but is on the verge of immense widespread diffusion. The notion of an interorganizational system (IOS) has nearly been lost. Virtually eclipsed by the attention towards e-commerce, B2B, P2P and many others. When asked about interorganizational systems, invariably most think of electronic data interchange (EDI). Albeit EDI still remains the preeminent type of interorganizational system, IOS solutions have been overhauled since the mid-1990s. IOS solutions are now collaboratively developed, structured around discretely defined cross-company business process standards and able to be distributed via the web. Compared with EDI technology from the past, the notions of open standards code, modularity, scalability, and interorganizational business process reengineering are embedded in modern-day IOS development. Fundamentally, this work bridges the research gap between prior ...

To cut costs and improve services, public-sector agencies are adopting shared services that require complex interorganizational systems to support them. We describe how a U.S. local government successfully embraced the complexities of aligning the regulated processes of multiple independent departments as it developed a criminal justice court and case management system for a new shared service center. From this cross-agency case, we provide guidelines for managing the complexities of interorganizational system projects in general.Click here for free 2-page executive summary (pdf)Click here for free presentation slides (pptx)

Higher academic institutions in the UK need to drive improvements in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) through sustainable practical interventions. A broad view of inclusivity is based on an intersectional approach that considers race, geographical location, caring responsibilities, disability, neurodiversity, religion, and LGBTQIA+ identities. We describe the establishment of a diverse stakeholder group to develop practical grass-roots recommendations through which improvements can be advanced. We have developed a manifesto for change, comprising six domains through which academic institutions can drive progress through setting short, medium, and long-term priorities. Interventions will yield rewards in recruitment and retention of a diverse talent pool, leading to enhanced impact and output.

In recent years, it has become clear that management education needs to be more effective and relevant for management practice. In order to improve the effectiveness of management education, alternative teaching methods are designed such as case studies and action learning. However, these methods have so far only proved to be useful in an educational setting. Moreover, they can not deal with knowledge that learner can acquire only through a practice in a company. As a result, there is still a gap between management education and management practice. The gap is especially significant when focusing only on the main purpose of educational organizations and companies, i.e., education and profitable business respectively. It is important to consider secondary functions to close that gap: both organizations have a common function to develop human resource. Recent research on human resource development in companies reported that it is essential to have several stakeholders not only inside a company ...
Our built environment has the power to influence where we live and work, how we transport ourselves, how and what we consume and many other behaviors in our everyday lives, in other words, it has a significant impact on our global environment and economy. Given the notable need for more sustainable development of both the global environment and economy, sustainability has become a critical factor also in the area of urban development. With this as a backdrop, the construction industry and its many actors, such as clients, contractors and suppliers, that collectively drive urban development, play a significant role in creating sustainable development.. Innovation is a cornerstone to achieve development, so also in the construction industry. However, with its many interrelated organizations, projects and actors, innovation inevitably becomes inter-organizational. From an urban development perspective, inter-organizational innovation will happen in a multi-project context where several construction ...

N2 - Data from a longitudinal study into the key management success factors in the fair trade industry provide insights into the essential nature of inter-organizational alliances and networks in creating the profitable and growing fair trade market in the UK. Drawing on three case studies and extensive industry interviews, we provide an interpretive perspective on the organizational relationships and business networks and the way in which these have engendered success for UK fair trade companies. Three types of benefit are derived from the networks: competitive developments through virtual integration in which the organizations remain flexible and small while projecting size to the market; intellectual developments through the sharing of intellectual capital with a diverse network of organizations in many fields; and ideological developments through an ...

I am quite drawn to this Scarcity vs. Abundance Management chart, which Ive replicated from a recent Wired Magazine article, on how people environments work differently when they perceive themselves to be working in Scarcity as opposed to Abundance.. I think this phenomenon happens in networks and partnerships as well. Scarcity-thinking partnerships assume only permitted actions are allowed. Abundance-thinking partnerships assume all actions are allowed unless some particular action has had to be forbidden.. Abundance-thinking partnerships continually reinforce that we are all equals; there is no boss in the partnership. On the other end, Scarcity-thinking partnerships devolve authority into a tight group that believes it knows whats better for everyone.. Though partnerships dont operate with a profit plan, Scarcity-partnerships build more rigid approaches that attempt to plan every element in advance. Abundance-thinking partnerships are able to figure out emerging situations as they go ...
