Despite the recent proliferation of scientific, clinical, and narrative accounts of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), the phenomenology of voice hearing remains opaque and undertheorized. In this article, we outline an interdisciplinary approach to understanding hallucinatory experiences which seeks to demonstrate the value of the humanities and social sciences to advancing knowledge in clinical research and practice. We argue that an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenology of AVH utilizes rigorous and context-appropriate methodologies to analyze a wider range of first-person accounts of AVH at 3 contextual levels: (1) cultural, social, and historical; (2) experiential; and (3) biographical. We go on to show that there are significant potential benefits for voice hearers, clinicians, and researchers. These include (1) informing the development and refinement of subtypes of hallucinations within and across diagnostic categories; (2) front-loading research in cognitive neuroscience; ...

The global transition to renewable energy is gaining momentum, and cities and local governments are at the forefront of this movement. The number of municipalities around the world setting ambitious 100% renewable energy targets is growing, with some cities in the US and Europe having already met this goal. However, the transition to renewable energy is no easy task and it requires moving forward collaboratively with businesses, governments, and the public. City leaders need to be equipped with practical knowledge to work effectively in partnerships across sectors.. By highlighting foundational first actions, this interdisciplinary course will help provide the knowledge and perspective needed to confidently lead a municipal- level renewable energy transition.. ...

In her final year at UBC, Andrea enrolled in New Venture Design, an interdisciplinary course combining engineering and entrepreneurship. In the course, she and her team developed Reveal-a wearable device that uses smart sensors built into clothing to track stress and anxiety indicators in individuals on the autism spectrum, and send information to a caregivers smartphone in real time. It was during this course that Andrea and her team discovered Singularity Universitys Canadian Global Impact Competition, submitted Reveal to the competition, and were selected as a winning idea. Since completing SUs Graduate Studies Program, Andrea has turned Reveal into a company-Awake Labs.. We measure the three leading physiological indicators of anxiety-sweat, heart rate, and skin temperature-and we track them in real time. Based on how they change over time, we can notify a parent or caregiver…the caregivers can then give feedback to the systems saying, Yes. This was a meltdown, and track the ...

Stephanie Reist is pursuing a Ph.D. in Romance Studies and a masters in Public Policy. As someone whos interested in romance studies and Portuguese and Latin American culture and public policy, I have very broad interests, she said. So picking a dissertation project, I could go anywhere. Bass Connections helped me focus and recognize that I already have this body of knowledge, and now Im currently participating in a research project that lets me build on that and integrate it into my own research. Her work looks at center-periphery dynamics, urban belonging, and Black cultural production in Rios Baixada Fluminense suburbs.. Kidd noted that his participation has given him valuable experience as an instructor. Often times its not until the fourth, fifth, sixth, or even seventh year that people have the ability to pilot a course and have a trial run with students. I think its helped me grow quite a bit in terms of communicating expectations, coming up with research questions, piloting ...

At https://notrickszone.com/2021/09/09/scientists-increasingly-agree-the-la... ... scientists have been forced to accept that during the Late Glacial Maximum summers were several degrees warmer than in the modern world. These were endemic to Siberia and Alaska - north of the Arctic Circle. The old view that during the extent of the last Ice Age, or at least from 60,000 years ago onwards, to the beginning of the Holocene, a huge ice sheet covered the northern hemisphere from one end to the other, has been abandoned. Scientists can now write articles on this fact with impunity - unlike the situation a few years ago. Two article have appeared in 2021, including one in a recent issue of Quaternary International journal, September 2021 [Tarasov et al]. In fact, by as much as 5 degrees warmer in Alaska and eastern Siberia. To put that into perspective to modern global warming, we have 1 degree [or nearly so], since 1850. The reason 1850 is chosen as a start point is that it coincides with a blip in ...
The science is in. Climate change is threatening life on the planet. Unless humans radically reduce the burden we place on the earth, we are headed for disaster. Unfortunately, the global community has done very little to battle climate change. Indeed, key policy decisions of the last decade push us in precisely the wrong direction; calling for faster economic growth and higher levels consumption. How is this possible? Are we in denial? Why are our leaders ignoring the facts? And, most importantly, what can you do to become more knowledgeable and engaged with environmental issues? This class will address these questions and explore the relationship between capitalism, our political system, and the nature of the environmental crisis.. Instructors:. Brandon Unti, ...

From the Ideas Lab web page:. The Ideas Lab process entails participation in an intensive five-day residential workshop, the development of multidisciplinary collaborative proposals through a real-time and iterative review process, and the opportunity to submit proposals for small, 1-year awards to further build the collaborations. The Ideas Lab process was modeled on the IDEAs Factory program developed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United Kingdom. The concept of the IDEAs Factory program is to organize intensive interactive multidisciplinary workshops (Sandpits) involving around 30 participants, with the aim of developing new and bold approaches to address grand challenge questions for topics that could benefit from a new dimension in thinking. The participants are assisted by a team of professional facilitators and by a team of scientists with relevant expertise. These scientific experts, known as mentors, are not eligible for any funds that may ...

A comprehensive overview of an interdisciplinary approach to robotics that takes direct inspiration from the developmental and learning phenomena observed in childrens cognitive development. Developmental robotics is a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to robotics that is directly inspired by the developmental principles and mechanisms observed in childrens cognitive development. It builds on the idea that the robot, using a set of intrinsic developmental principles regulating the real-time interaction of its body, brain, and environment, can autonomously acquire an increasingly complex set of sensorimotor and mental capabilities. This volume, drawing on insights from psychology, computer science, linguistics, neuroscience, and robotics, offers the first comprehensive overview of a rapidly growing field. After providing some essential background information on robotics and developmental psychology, the book looks in detail at how developmental robotics models and experiments
DEADLINE: 15 August 2017. Summer School #2 MAKING PUBLIC DOMAIN will examine how public domain can be made and what role art can play in this. Public space does not actually exist, but must constantly be created and activated. Which strategies then - artistic, civil, activist, social, political, legal, etc - are able to generate public space?. An interdisciplinary group of participants and guests will tackle a different theme every day, by means of workshops, lectures, artistic interventions and case studies. Summer school participants will be actively involved in a 5-day exchange between artists and experts unraveling the concepts and practice of making public domain.. INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH. A space only becomes public when other voices, opinions and images make visible what otherwise remains invisible. A productive dialogue on the making public domain can only make sense in an interdisciplinary approach, involving both guests and participants from various domains of knowledge and ...
