Reviews the book, Infants in Crisis: How Parents Cope with Newborn Intensive Care and its Aftermath by Glenn Affleck, Howard Tennen, and Jonelle Rowe (see record 1991-97005-000). This volume investigates the psychological adaptations made by families of newborn infants who are hospitalized in intensive care units. The authors summarize research addressing a wide spectrum of questions raised by the birth, care, and homecoming of medically fragile infants. Topics include coping strategies in the hospital, expectancies of control over childrens futures, the search for causes, self-blame and blame on others, the emotional response of mothers, and the impact on the marital relationship. The authors conclude with a discussion of their findings and implications for practitioners in the field. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved) ...

Timely transport of a critically ill newborn from a community hospital to a regional neonatal intensive care unit may mean the difference between life and death or a life free of physical or mental impairment. Now experts at UC Irvine Medical Center, home to Orange Countys only high-risk regional perinatal-neonatal center, are hitting the road with a cooling technology that may prevent or minimize brain damage to infants who are oxygen-deprived at birth. "We believe applying whole body cooling to newborns en route to UC Irvine Medical Center will give infants with the most critical brain injuries a better chance to recover," said Dr. Cherry Uy, director of the UC Irvine Health Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Also called therapeutic hypothermia, whole body cooling uses a specially-designed blanket to lower an infants body temperature to 92.3 to 94.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Studies show that such cooling may prevent brain damage in a newborn that experiences hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, ...

USA Health has the areas only Level III neonatal intensive care unit, which offers the most advanced care for premature and critically ill newborns.
Despite intensive surveillance and prophylactic measures, nosocomial infections (NIs) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remain a major world health problem. NIs still occur at an incidence of around 30% [1,2] and, in developing countries, are estimated to cause 40% of all neonatal deaths [3]. At birth, newborns are devoiced of efficient structural barriers, of a protective endogenous microbial flora and of a mature immune system. Additionally, neonates admitted to NICUs, especially if premature or with low birth weight, are under a profound physiologic instability and are frequently exposed to therapeutic interventions associated with infectious complications, such as invasive procedures and broad-spectrum antibiotics [4,5]. Together, these unique aspects render this population exceedingly susceptible to NIs, as well as vulnerable to more severe illness. The outcome of neonates with NICU NIs is strongly related to their appropriate diagnosis and management. Diagnosing neonatal NI, ...

Show more ,Studies have shown that infused particles lead to numerous complications such as inflammation or organ dysfunctions in critically ill children. Nevertheless, there is very little data available to evaluate the amount of particulate matter potentially administered to patients, and none with regard to infants. We have investigated the quantity received by these patients during multidrug IV therapies. Two different protocols commonly used in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to manage excessively preterm infants were reproduced in the laboratory and directly connected to a dynamic particle analyser. The particulate matter of infused therapies was measured over 24 h, so that both overall particulate contamination and particle sizes could be determined. No visible particles were observed during drug infusions. Particulate analyses showed a significant number of particles that can reach 85,000 per day, with peaks during discontinuous drug infusions. Moreover, we showed that very large ...

N2 - The automatic application of computerized guidelines and protocols in intensive care is not simple, given the high volume of data which must be processed and the need to offer advice on a continuous basis. However most of this data is available automatically and there is therefore the real possibility of improving the quality of care by providing timely advice without placing any additional load on the clinicians. In this paper we describe a prototype system which demonstrates the feasibility of doing this. We then discuss specific issues which arise in applying guidelines for such environments..
