Each year, approximately 50,000 women in the United States undergo a medical procedure to place the living cells of a foreign donor inside their body. These cells carry with them the potential to transmit infectious disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation-and also the potential to produce a vibrant, happy and healthy child. These cells are spermatozoa, and the women who receive them undergo donor insemination. This procedure has tremendous potential to impact the lives of these women, both positively and negatively. That being the case, one would expect that the testing, record keeping, and quality control procedures required for donor semen would be as rigorous and regulated as for any medical test or device. They are not. There is no official record of births by donor conception. There are no limits or restrictions on the qualification of donors. Donor semen is not even tested to confirm that the sperm used in the insemination actually came from the donor that the ...
A lesbian couple in Australia have taken the first wrongful birth lawsuit in Australian legislative history to court. The two women, who have three year old twin daughters, are suing Canberra obstetrician, Robert Armellin, for wrongful birth after he supervised the implantation of two embryos instead of one into the birth mother during the in vitro fertilization procedure.. The women, who cannot be named because of a court order, are suing the doctor for almost $400,000 (USD) which they contest will be the cost of raising the mistakenly implanted second child. The sum includes funds for private school, medical expenses and lost wages for the women.. According to the Australian newspaper, the PerthNow, the mother claimed that certain aspects of pregnancy were extremely stressful to her - for instance, buying a stroller - due to the fact that she was carrying twins. It was like the last frontier of acceptance to spend hundreds of dollars on a pram. The mother also lamented that she suffered ...
A Bangladesh lesbian couple is being threatened with life imprisonment for marrying in secret. Shibronty Roy Puja, a 16-year-old Hindu, and Sanjida Akter, 21-year-old Muslim, were arrested in Dhaka on 23 July. The two girls had run away from the Pirojpur district, where they both lived, last week to the Bangladeshi capital. According to local media, Akter had been tutoring Puja. It was only recently they realized their feelings for each other and decided to marry. On 20 July, Pujas father reported his daughter missing. When the couple was found by police, Puja said: If a male can love a female, why couldnt a female love another female? She then said the couple had married according to Hindu law, having exchanged garlands of flowers. An investigating police officer described it as being a rare example in our country. Same-sex relationships, sexual or otherwise, are illegal in Bangladesh. Full text of article available at link below -. ...

On 6 February 2013, the Higher Regional Court in Hamm, Germany, granted a 21-year-old donor-conceived woman the right to access the identity of her donor.. Sarah P was conceived at a time when it was common medical practice in Germany to destroy the records revealing the donors and the recipients identity after a period of 10 years. However, the German Federal Court of Justice has repeatedly granted adults the right to be informed about their biological fathers identity - although these cases did not involve donor insemination but situations such as where children were born out of wedlock.. The dilemma was that, on the one hand, the documents could be lawfully destroyed and the donor would remain anonymous. On the other hand, however, in comparable situations offspring have been granted the right to access this kind of information. The regional court ruling clearly extended such rights to offspring where his or her conception was by donor insemination, taking priority over the donors ...

It must then undergo various tests to screen for diseases that can be transmitted to the mother and genetic abnormalities that can be transmitted to the fetus.. ...

Bill also argues that: Society believes that having children is a right, including having children by donor insemination, however this right does not trump childrens rights. These confidentiality agreements are not viewed by the State as reason to deny us information about who we are, but rather to assure the parents and the donor that a) the donor will not come in and take the child away from the legal parents, and b) that the donor is not financially responsible for that child. However, these two reasons disappear upon the child reaching adulthood, and therefore these contracts have no use to the adult offspring who was not a part of the agreement. If these contracts cannot meet substantive due process under the 14th Amendment, then the agreement is simply to protect the identity of the man who fathered the child, and this cannot be defended and is unconstitutional ...

Rule changes mean men who donate sperm can no longer hide their identities and are not paid. This has decimated the number of willing volunteers, according to Prof Charles Kingsland, founder of the Hewitt Fertility Centre in Liverpool Womens Hospital.. Prof Kingsland said there is a growing need for sperm donors, but around another 200 men need to sign up in Liverpool for fertility experts to keep pace with demand. Prof Kingsland said: The law changed so that a child has a right to know their genetic parent and donors cannot be paid for their service.. Unsurprisingly, that decimated our sperm donation programme. It had a devastating impact. Who is going to donate if you do not get paid and you are not allowed to remain anonymous?. The law changed in 2006 to allow children fathered by sperm donors to track down their biological dad once they turn 18. The number of donors coming forward has fallen steadily ever since.. decisions about the resulting embryos, including how many will be transferred during each cycle and what sort of prenatal care she will have. If fetal abnormalities are discovered during a subsequent ultrasound or amniocentesis, the recipient may make the extraordinarily difficult decision to end the pregnancy. Does she have to contact the original egg or sperm donor to be given permission to make this decision? If she is able to make this ultimate decision regarding her pregnancy, shouldnt she be able to also make the decision to donate any of the remaining healthy embryos to a patient in need? If the ultimate decision is allowed, why not a lesser decision?. When we are asked to receive embryos created from donor material, we do our best (i.e., due diligence) to obtain a copy of the consent the egg or sperm donor signed. If there are any stipulations present, we feel we must completely honor them. Please keep in mind, however, that obtaining the original egg/sperm donor contract is very ...

He would, without a doubt, make my life a living hell.. ***. November 9, 2008 was the day of his most brutal attack on me. I cannot say I had known this day would come, in the way it came. I knew there would be an eventual showdown - I just never envisioned this.. It was a Sunday and Ted had not shown up all weekend, not even to get his kids. It was after 10 at night and the kids were fast asleep, both of them in bed with me, for we would have an early day the next morning.. In my sleep, I could hear the door opening downstairs. I had locked and chained the front door, so Ted was letting himself in through the garage door.. The next thing, he was standing above ...

Since the introduction of Identity-based (ID-based) cryptography by Shamir in 1984, numerous ID-based signature schemes have been proposed. In 2001, Rivest et al. introduced ring signature that provides irrevocable signer anonymity and spontaneous group formation. In recent years, ID-based ring signature schemes have been proposed and all of them are based on bilinear pairings. In this paper, we propose the first ID-based threshold ring signature scheme that is not based on bilinear pairings. We also propose the first ID-based threshold `linkable ring signature scheme. We emphasize that the anonymity of the actual signers is maintained even against the private key generator (PKG) of the ID-based system. Finally we show how to add identity escrow to the two schemes. Due to the different levels of signer anonymity they support, the schemes proposed in this paper actually form a suite of ID-based threshold ring signature schemes which is applicable to many real-world applications with varied ...
IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination. IUI donor sperm has been prepared by washing the fresh ejaculate to remove the seminal plasma prior to freezing.
Insemination with donor spermatozoa is an integral part of infertility treatment. For the last 3 years in our unit, intrauterine insemination with donor spermatozoa (IUID) has been used in preference to vaginal insemination. In this retrospective study, patients were offered an initial course of five single intrauterine inseminations with cryopreserved donor spermatozoa and treatment was then reviewed. A total of 389 patients received 1465 inseminations. In all, 1119 cycles were monitored using luteinizing hormone serum analyses and 346 cycles using the urine home test kits. The clinical pregnancy rate per insemination for the cycles monitored by the serum assay was 18.0% (202/1119) compared with the urine cycles (13.7%, 46/346) (P ,05). The pregnancy loss rate was not significantly different (14.4%, 29/202 and 21.7%, 10/46) (serum and urine cycles respectively). The viable clinical pregnancy rate was significantly higher (P ,03) for the serum cycles than for the cycles using the urinary ...
IUI Attempts. Before trying other forms of assisted reproductive technology (ART), a couple should at least try three attempts of intrauterine insemination. For a female age 40 years or older, or a woman with a low ovarian reserve, IVF should be considered after 1-2 failed IUI attempts. In vitro fertilization has a higher success rate than IUI, so many couples choose to move on to this procedure when IUI fails.. Third Party Reproduction. IUI can be done using donor sperm, which is called donor insemination. Use of another mans sperm is done when the male partners sperm quality is so severely damaged that it cannot be used for IUI or in vitro fertilization. Donor insemination is also an option for single women and lesbian couples who wish to have a baby.. With several fertility centers in Irvine, Glendale, Torrance and Corona, Pacific Reproductive Center provides comprehensive IVF and IUI treatments with incredible success rates. Call us Today!. ...

Single women and lesbian couples looking to start a family face big issues from the outset when it comes to choosing a donor. Anonymity may seem like the simplest route but knowing more about a donor has its advantages, not least for those who want their child to have a relationship with its father. Fertility lawyer Nicola Scott of Natalie Gamble Associates looks at the practical and legal issues behind these decisions as well as the rights and responsibilities of the parties involved, whilst Erika Tranfield of Pride Angel, a website that facilitates and encourages conversations between donors and potential parents, offers an insight into the thinking and motivation of the people who connect via her site.. ...

The earliest recorded AI in a medical institution took place at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia by Dr William Pancoast. It was so secret that even the woman being inseminated wasnt told that the sperm was from a donor, not her husband. A fascinating story worth telling here:. In 1884, Dr William Pancoast of the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia went rogue and decided to have a little scientific fun with one of his patients, a Quaker woman who had long been unable to conceive. After many examinations, he decided that the fault in fact lay with her husbands low sperm count. The man, an elderly merchant many years older than his wife, was officially shooting blanks.. Rather than inform her and her husband of the sad state of affairs and move on from a point of full disclosure, Dr Pancoast summoned the wife to one final examination. As the woman lay unconscious and chloroformed on his table as six of Dr Pancoasts students looked on, the good doctor injected into her cervix ...
In this book chapter, I explore an early trade secrecy case from New York, Tabor v. Hoffman, decided in 1889. A study of this case indicates that many present-day concerns about overlapping edges between trade secrecy and patent laws - and their interaction and interference with one anothers aims - were latent, if not overtly raised, when American courts were just beginning to articulate the common law right of trade secrecy. After telling Tabors tale, I investigate some of the longstanding interactions and tensions between trade secrecy and patent laws, through the lens of the regimes encouragements of disclosure in some ways and secrecy in others. Moreover, even though trade secrecy law is predominantly focused on secrecy, in some ways it enables disclosure. By contrast, although patent law is preoccupied with disclosure, in some ways, it permits and encourages secrecy. In all, patent law and trade secrecy together create a legal tangle of secrets and disclosures in trade. A full review of ...
News hit the press last week of the national sperm banks first birthday. Amongst reports was the revelation that the bank had only recruited nine donors within the last twelve months.. Although this does not sound like many, the chief executive was quick to point out the drawn out process involved in donating sperm - including the plethora of tests, regular clinic visits and the necessary periods of sexual abstinence. In addition, sperm donors are paid just £35 a visit - a sum which may not make the effort involved particularly appealing to the everyday man. With that in mind, nine donors seems somewhat of an achievement.. BBC Radio London 94.9 asked Nicola Scott to provide clarity about the legal issues surrounding donor sperm and whether the changes to the law in 2005, which lifted donor anonymity, may have a part to play in the nationwide shortage:. There is now no such thing as an anonymous UK clinic donor. From age 18, donor-conceived children (who were conceived after the law changed in ...

For a bit of background information, my risk factors for preeclampsia were being a nulligravida, advanced maternal age (36y at time of conception), and donor insemination. We successfully conceived on our 3rd IUI with frozen sperm from a donor. The pregnancy was also complicated by new onset severe migraine headaches and an abnormal 2nd trimester screen suggesting a 1/29 risk for Down Syndrome; the amniocentesis results were normal. We have since consulted with an MFM specialist and the thrombophilia workup revealed a Protein C deficiency and heterozygosity for the MTHFR DNA mutation (A1298C). Otherwise I’m a very healthy person; my medical history is only significant for the occasional bout of Raynaud’s phenomenon and tension headaches ...
Insemination can increase the chances of pregnancy for those couples who are suffering from childlessness problems. The technique which is used is a thin, flexible tube (catheter) to put sperm into the womans reproductive tract. These are IntraUterine Insemination (IUI), InVitro Fertilization (IVF) and IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). IUI is the least invasive as it does not involve take away eggs from the woman, only injecting sperm into the uterus.. When dealing with male factor infertility, unexplained infertility or need a donor sperm to get pregnant. When such issues arise then artificial infertility procedure works. When a woman planning to think of without a male partner can also use donor sperm. Or even when the male partner is sterilized or have extremely low sperm count or have any hereditary disease then at that time donor sperm is used.. The Sperm which is used for infertility is usually washed because placing unwashed sperm right into the uterus can cause severe pain and by ...
Anonymity, which is more and more important to multi-receiver schemes, has been taken into consideration by many researchers recently. To protect the receiver anonymity, in 2010, the first multi-receiver scheme based on the Lagrange interpolating polynomial was proposed. To ensure the senders anonymity, the concept of the ring signature was proposed in 2005, but afterwards, this scheme was proven to has some weakness and at the same time, a completely anonymous multi-receiver signcryption scheme is proposed. In this completely anonymous scheme, the sender anonymity is achieved by improving the ring signature, and the receiver anonymity is achieved by also using the Lagrange interpolating polynomial. Unfortunately, the Lagrange interpolation method was proven a failure to protect the anonymity of receivers, because each authorized receiver could judge whether anyone else is authorized or not. Therefore, the completely anonymous multi-receiver signcryption mentioned above can only protect the sender

This case involved the availability of visitation rights for non-biological lesbian mothers. Legal Momentum joined an amicus brief in support of lesbian mothers who sought visitation with the children they had raised with their former partners. The brief focused on the importance of recognizing the rights of de facto parents and the realities of family life, rather than relying on biological or legal ties in determining a parents right to visit her child. The Court of Appeals rejected the non-biological mothers claims, relying on a strict interpretation of statutory language that granted parental rights only to legal parents, which it found did not include non-biological lesbian mothers. The plaintiffs application to appeal to the Tennessee Supreme Court was denied in January 2000. ...

And nobody knows the answers to these questions. So almost every aspect of social science if you like that is engaged in the question of donor, donor conception. As I say, theres genetics, theres medicine if you like, theres anthropology. What is a family? How does, what values placed on genetic relationships in this particular culture? At this particular time? In Western society, in UK society, in London society which is totally different I suspect from what it would have been two hundred years ago, in this particular country and probably very different from what it would be 6,000 miles away in Africa in some communities or in South America in some communities. So anthropologists will have a field day with all of this. Its a subject of potential, enormous study I suspect. Sociology, how do we, how do families relate to each other, and whats going on in the culture of societies, more generally, in the movement to accept this as a more natural thing. Or is it? Philosophy. What are we ...
My annotation: Many exciting things are happening in five-year-old Malins life this year. Her mother Siv and her partner Lisa, have just gotten married, and Lisa is now pregnant with her own child and Malin is excited about soon becoming a big sister! As Lisas belly grows, Malin becomes curious and one day asks her mother where babies come from and her mom explains that they come from the seeds of a man and the egg of a woman. Malin does not need to know whose seeds she came from though. She already knows her father, most likely from birth, and loves him dearly. Her fathers partner, Niklas, has now donated his seeds to Lisa, Malins other mother, as they too wish to become parents. Malins unnamed father and his partner do many things with Malins family. Both men attended Siv and Lisas wedding and party, and they also vacation together. And now Niklas has donated his sperm to Lisa so that she too can become a mother and he a father. This book is not expressly about donor conception, but it ...
Our goal is to understand how environmental and occupational exposures to heavy and transition metal ions injure the human male reproductive tract.. The American Urological Association and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine report that ~15% of couples (i.e., more than 6.1 million people in the U.S.) experience infertility at some time. The male is responsible for infertility of 20% of these couples and contributes to the infertility of another 30-40%. However, the cause(s) of male infertility in many cases is unknown. Our data suggest that lead exposures (in the air, in food and in drinking water) underlie a significant fraction of unexplained male infertility. We found that blood and seminal plasma lead levels were elevated in 22% of normospermic males from couples seeking infertility treatment, in 29% of semen donors participating in an artificial insemination program and in 23% of unselected semen donors answering an advertisement for research participation. These elevated lead ...
It is the time of year in the Midwest when breeding soundness exams and artificial insemination programs are everyday events. Great strides have been made in the last few years in the design and products available that make use of timed AI programs not only easy to implement but highly effective. We use timed AI programs routinely in our practice. In beef herds there is a huge savings in labor due to the convenience of being able to pre determine weeks in advance what day the herd will need to be gathered for chute work. This tool has allowed us to implement AI in commercial herds that would not have heat detected and bred after observed heats. The convenience factor of AI in my opinion is seen on both ends of gestation. It is a huge advantage to have 60% of your cows bred on day 1 of the breeding season strictly for labor and convenience. There are also economic reasons why this is beneficial. If you are able to breed 60% AI (I tell my producers to hope for , than 60 but to expect 60 or ,) and ...
A new trend is gaining popularity throughout the U.S. and abroad when it comes to choosing a sperm donor for artificial insemination. Whereas most sperm donation used to be completely anonymous, many sperm banks now require some or all of their sperm donors to consent to the release of their identity to children who have reached the age of 18. In fact, in some countries, anonymous donation is no longer permitted. The use of an open identity (or ID release) donor is an option that appeals to many prospective parents.. What is an open identity donor?. At Seattle Sperm Bank, open identity donors have committed to at least one contact with the child, when the child reaches the age of 18. The paper, titled Storming the Servers: A Social Psychological Analysis of the First Internet War, is among the first to study the social and psychological forces that contributed to the massive DDoS, or distributed denial of service, attacks on Estonia. They are likely to play out in future online conflicts, the authors warn.. Chief among the contributors was the anonymity of online interactions, which the authors said created a disregard for established social mores.. Participants in the attacks both transmitted instructions on how to participate and took part in the DDoS attacks themselves from the privacy of their offices, internet cafes, and homes, the paper explains.
