A system and method for content-based search and retrieval of visual objects. A base visual information retrieval (VIR) engine utilizes a set of universal primitives to operate on the visual objects. An extensible VIR engine allows custom, modular primitives to be defined and registered. A custom primitive addresses domain specific problems and can utilize any image understanding technique. Object attributes can be extracted over the entire image or over only a portion of the object. A schema is defined as a specific collection of primitives. A specific schema implies a specific set of visual features to be processed and a corresponding feature vector to be used for content-based similarity scoring. A primitive registration interface registers custom primitives and facilitates storing of an analysis function and a comparison function to a schema table. A heterogeneous comparison allows objects analyzed by different schemas to be compared if at least one primitive is in common between the schemas. A

Data from an experimental test of the BCIS system in 200 Boston area homes and businesses have shown that the Boston Community Information System provides a valuable and useful service. We present and discuss all of the data from the experimental test of the BCIS system in Boston area homes and offices from February 1987 to April 1988. The test began in February 1986, and the period from February 1986 to January 1987 is covered in MIT/LCS/TR-397. We also present data drawn from a second system that we have built called the Clipping Service. The Clipping Service provides a personalized information service to users around the world via electronic mail.
In this article, Dr. David Lyalin introduces Euler diagrams and Venn diagrams as business analysis instruments. Application of these visual schematics to support development of vocabulary and concept models can help business analysts deal with the complexity of relationships between concepts. It also can help contributing subject matter experts overcome a perplexity commonly observed with intricate aspects of concept modeling. Visualizing typical relationships between concepts with circles that include, exclude, and intersect each other results in simple visual schematics that assist in conducting concept analysis and modeling activities. An implementation example is provided, based on a vocabulary development in the public health domain of immunization information systems.

Low-income countries with their funding and implementing partners are increasingly recognizing health information systems (HIS) as an essential way to strengthen and support health systems. There is tremendous potential for innovations in information and communication technologies to assist health managers, health workers, and patients. Yet individual technologies and software applications are often developed without specifying how they will interact and communicate with existing and future information systems. Furthermore, they are developed without giving adequate attention to the needs the information system is supposed to address, resulting in software applications that do not effectively meet user needs. There is a lack of documented systematic methodology for gathering and documenting requirements for developing HIS. This article introduces a systematic, architected, and rational approach (SARA) for the design and development of health information systems. SARA, based on an Enterprise ...

The Prosecutors Management Information System (PROMIS) is a computer-based information system for public prosecution agencies. PROMIS was initially developed with funds from the United States Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) to cope with problems of a large, urban prosecution agency where mass production operations had superceded the traditional practice of a single attorney preparing and prosecuting a given case from inception to final disposition. The combination of massive volumes of cases and assembly-line fragmentation of responsibility and control had created a situation in which one case was indistinguishable from another and the effects of problems at various stages in the assembly line on ultimate case disposition went undetected and uncorrected. One unique feature of PROMIS that addresses these problems is the automated evaluation of cases. Through the application of a uniform set of criteria, PROMIS assigns two numerical ratings to each case: one signifying the ...

The Health Information System (HIS) is a set of computerized tools for the collection, storage, management, and transmission of health data. The role of such tools in supporting the modernization of health systems, improving access to quality healthcare, and reducing costs in developing countries is unquestionable, but their implementation faces several challenges. In Gabon, a unique national electronic HIS has been launched. It will connect healthcare institutions and providers at all levels in the whole country. This study aims to explore and identify the factors influencing healthcare providers perceptions of the national electronic HIS in Gabon. A 44-item questionnaire based on the Information System Success Model (ISSM) was administered between February and April 2018 among 2600 healthcare providers across the country. The questions assessed the different aspects of the HIS that could influence its perceived impact on a 5-level Likert scale (from fully agree to totally disagree). The reliability

Fiesta: Chumash Indians (1mb). The History of Mission Santa Barbara. Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. It was established on the Feast of St. Barbara, Dec 4, 1786. Padre Junipero Serra, who founded the first nine missions, had died 2 years earlier. Serra had planned to build this mission, raising the cross at the presidio of Santa Barbara in 1782. It was Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, his successor, who raised the cross here and placed Padre Antonio Paterna, a companion of Serra, in charge. Paterna put up the first buildings and made the first converts. The original buildings were of adobe and unpretentious. As the years passed, there was progress and development. There were three adobe churches here, each larger than the other, before the present church. The third was destroyed by earthquake in 1812. Thereafter the present church was planned. It was finished and dedicated in 1820. The present friary residence was built ...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The realization of Health Information Systems (HIS) requires rigorous evaluation that addresses technology, human and organization issues. Our review indicates that current evaluation methods evaluate different aspects of HIS and they can be improved upon. A new evaluation framework, human, organization and technology-fit (HOT-fit) was developed after having conducted a critical appraisal of the findings of existing HIS evaluation studies. HOT-fit builds on previous models of IS evaluation--in particular, the IS Success Model and the IT-Organization Fit Model. This paper introduces the new framework for HIS evaluation that incorporates comprehensive dimensions and measures of HIS and provides a technological, human and organizational fit. METHODS: Literature review on HIS and IS evaluation studies and pilot testing of developed framework. The framework was used to evaluate a Fundus Imaging System (FIS) of a primary care organization in the UK. The case study was conducted ...

Background/Purpose. Previous studies suggest that FM may be associated with worse balance and falls. Balance requires the coordination of motor, sensory (ex. visual and vestibular), and cognitive abilities. These may be affected by the psychological symptoms present in FM. Balance was measured using a One-Leg Balance Test (OLBT): time standing on preferred leg with eyes closed; max time = 30 seconds. Psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were measured using validated scales: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II); Participant-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Emotional Distress rating ...
