A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. The acronym GIS is sometimes used for geographic information science (GI Science) to refer to the academic discipline that studies geographic information systems and is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of geoinformatics.. What goes beyond a GIS is a spatial data infrastructure, a concept that has no such restrictive boundaries. In general, the term describes any information system that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations.[3][4] Geographic information science is the science underlying geographic concepts, applications, and systems.. GIS can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, ...

As more scholarly content is born digital or converted to a digital format, digital libraries are becoming increasingly vital to researchers seeking to leverage scholarly big data for scientific discovery. Although scholarly products are available in abundance-especially in environments created by the advent of social networking services-little is known about international scholarly information needs, information-seeking behavior, or information use. The purpose of this paper is to address these gaps via an in-depth analysis of the information needs and information-seeking behavior of researchers, both students and faculty, at two universities, one in the USA and the other in Qatar. Based on this analysis, the study identifies and describes new behavior patterns on the part of researchers as they engage in the information-seeking process. The analysis reveals that the use of academic social networks has notable effects on various scholarly activities. Further, this study identifies differences ...

This piece was submitted to Floodlight by the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). Nicanor, Ricardo, and the Denver Foundation. These names converge in one place - Denver Public Library.. Nicanors story dates back to when he and his family (upon his fathers acceptance to an American university) moved to the U.S. from Argentina. His mom, a librarian back home, did not speak English and Nicanor was the de facto interpreter - a skill that would come full circle. Fast forward to Nicanor receiving a Masters in Library and Information Science from University of Denver, and now serving as the Manager of Cultural Inclusion for Denver Public Library. A large portion of his work is with Immigrant and Refugee Services which the library provides. Together, Nicanor and Virginia Vassar Aggrey (Plaza Program Manager of Neighborhood Services) serve as a key resource and lifeline to countless individuals from other countries seeking services.. Ricardo is one of the beneficiaries of the work of ...

Analyzing a single nucleotide polymorphism in schizophrenia: a meta-analysis approach Oluwadamilare Falola,1 Victor Chukwudi Osamor,1,2 Marion Adebiyi,1,2 Ezekiel Adebiyi1,2 1Covenant University Bioinformatics Research (CUBRe), 2Department of Computer and Information Sciences, College of Science and Technology, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria Background: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting >21 million people worldwide. Some genetic studies reported that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) involving variant rs1344706 from the ZNF804A gene in human beings is associated with the risk of schizophrenia in several populations. Similar results tend to conflict with other reports in literature, indicating that no true significant association exists between rs1344706 and schizophrenia. We seek to determine the level of association of this SNP with schizophrenia in the Asian population using more recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets. Methods: Applying a
Theories of Common Sense (probability, evidence, fuzzy logic) Session Five: The Contribution of Information Science: Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks Artificial Intelligence views the mind as a symbol processor, which is a variation on a formal system. Artificial Intelligence has evolved into a formal study of human knowledge, away from the purely logical approach of its beginnings. Today the emphasis is on knowledge processing: a human is intelligent not by virtue of the ability to solve mathematical problems but by virtue of the ability to accumulate and use common-sense knowledge. In order to deal with common-sense knowledge, A.I. has employed non-standard logics such as fuzzy logic. Cognitive Science has borrowed A.I.s assumption that the mind is a symbol processor and applied it to psychology (memory, learning, reasoning, etc). Connectionism is a school of thought opposed to traditional A.I. that promotes the paradigm of Neural Networks, i.e. simulating the way the brain ...
Elizabeth A. Rauscher is an American physicist and parapsychologist. She is a former researcher with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Stanford Research Institute, and NASA. In 1975 Rauscher co-founded the Berkeley Fundamental Fysiks Group, an informal group of physicists who met weekly to discuss quantum mysticism and the philosophy of quantum physics. David Kaiser argued in his book, How the Hippies Saved Physics that this group helped to nurture ideas which were unpopular at the time within the physics community, but which later, in part, formed the basis of quantum information science. Rauscher has an interest in psychic healing and faith healing and other paranormal claims. In How the Hippies Saved Physics (2011), Kaiser writes that Rauscher had always been interested in science, and as a child had designed and built her own telescopes. Raised near Berkeley, she started hanging around the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory when she was in high ...

There are two opposing models of how the Internet has changed protest movements. The first is that the Internet has made protesters mightier than ever. This comes from the successful revolutions in Tunisia (2010-11), Egypt (2011), and Ukraine (2013). The second is that it has made them more ineffectual. Derided as slacktivism or clicktivism, the ease of action without commitment can result in movements like Occupy petering out in the US without any obvious effects. Of course, the reality is more nuanced, and Zeynep Tufekci teases that out in her new book Twitter and Tear Gas.. Tufekci is a rare interdisciplinary figure. As a sociologist, programmer, and ethnographer, she studies how technology shapes society and drives social change. She has a dual appointment in both the School of Information Science and the Department of Sociology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Spatial cognition is concerned with the acquisition, organization, utilization, and revision of knowledge about spatial environments. These capabilities enable humans to manage basic and high-level cognitive tasks in everyday life. Numerous disciplines (such as Psychology, Geographic Information Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cartography, etc.) work together to understand spatial cognition in humans and in technical systems. Spatial cognition studies have helped to link cognitive psychology and neuroscience together. Scientists in both fields work together to figure out what role spatial cognition plays in the brain as well as the neurobiological infrastructure that surrounds it. It has been found that neurological and neuropsychological problems are linked to a difference in spatial behavior. Among many kinds of the non-protein coding RNAs, we focus on the metastasis associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) that is a long non-coding RNA upregulated in metastatic carcinoma cells. Two molecular functions of MALAT1 have been proposed, one is the control of alternative splicing and the other is the transcriptional regulation. In this review, we document the molecular characteristics and functions of MALAT1 and shed light on the implication in the ...

Not only must the consumer classify their music, but online distributors must classify thousands of songs in their databases for their consumers to browse. In music psychology and music education, emotions based components of music has been recognized as the most strongly component associated with music expressivity. Music information behavior studies have also identified music mood emotion as an important criterion used by people in music seeking indexing and storage. However, evaluation of music mood is difficult to classify as it is highly subjective. Although there seems to be a very strong connectivity between the music (the audio) and the mood of a person. There are many entities which explicitly change our music while we are listening music.. Rhythm, tempo, instruments and musical scales are some such entities. There is one very important entity in the form of lyrics which directly affects our minds. Identifying audible words from lyrics and classifying the musics accordingly is a ...
Information is often linked to the scientific domain and perceived as a known and measured quantity, a fixed point. Terms such as information science, and information management contribute to the view of information as an objective tool. Information behaviour research, though, takes a different view, by exploring the relationship between the emotions and personal experiences of users and the information they find and use.

This article investigates the dynamic ways that people communicate, assess, and respond as a weather threat evolves. It uses social media data, which offer unique records of what people convey about their real-world risk contexts. Twitter narratives from 53 people who were in a mandatory evacuation zone in a New York City neighborhood during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 were qualitatively analyzed. The study provides rich insight into the complex, dynamic information behaviors and risk assessments of people at risk, and it illustrates how social media data can be collected, sampled, and analyzed to help provide this understanding. Results show that this sample of people at significant risk attended to forecast information and evacuation orders as well as multiple types of social and environmental cues. Although many tweeted explicitly about the mandatory evacuation order, forecast information was usually referenced only implicitly. Social and environmental cues grew more important as the threat ...

Hi all, The OBO Foundry is currently working on some new and improved ontology management strategies. As these strategies and infrastructure mature, we will be making announcements on the OBO-Discuss mailing list and contacting each ontology steward. Because this listserve is currently listed as a contact for an OBO Foundry registered ontology, we would request that someone on this list please suggest a contact person. Please note that we will continue to maintain links to these associated listserves. Each ontology contact/steward (regardless if OBO or OWL) should subscribe to obo-discuss. You can do so here: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/obo-discuss We would be grateful for your help in accomplishing our goal of having a contact person for each OBO ontology registered with the Foundry. Abstract: A critical review was conducted of social, psychological, and health science literature on the array of health risks and morbidities of truckers. Multilevel worksite-induced strains (e.g., long work hours and fatigue, shift work and sleep deprivation, postural fatigue and exposure to noise and vibration, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, and other occupational stressors) were categorized into six primary morbidities for truckers: (1) psychological and psychiatric disorders; (2) detriments resulting from disrupted biological cycles; (3) musculoskeletal disorders; (4) cancer and respiratory morbidities; (5) cardiovascular disease; and (6) risk-laden substance use and sexual practices. Elevated morbidity risks suggest the need for the design and implementation of systematic epidemiological research and environmental interventions in the transport sector.. Worksite-Induced Morbidities Among Truck Drivers in the United States ...
Objective: To assess evidence for residential mobility in childhood having an adverse association with health outcomes through the life course.. Methods: A systematic search of medical and social sciences literature was undertaken to identify research defining residential mobility as an independent variable and in which health outcomes were described and objectively measured. Studies were excluded that investigated international migration for asylum or were limited to educational outcomes. Two reviewers assessed each study using quality criteria with particular attention to the consideration of confounders and potential for bias. Data were extracted for analysis using a structured form.. Results: Twenty-two studies were included for this review. Outcomes identified in association with residential mobility included: higher levels of behavioural and emotional problems; increased teenage pregnancy rates; accelerated initiation of illicit drug use; adolescent depression; reduced continuity of ...
In addition to qualitative methods presented in chaos and complexity theories in educational research, this article addresses quantitative methods that may show potential for future research studies. Although much in the social and behavioral sciences literature has focused on computer simulations, this article explores current chaos and complexity methods that have the potential to bridge the divide between qualitative and quantitative, as well as theoretical and applied, human research studies. These methods include multiple linear regression, nonlinear regression, stochastics, Monte Carlo methods, Markov Chains, and Lyapunov exponents. A postulate for post hoc regression analysis is then presented as an example of an emergent, recursive, and iterative quantitative method when dealing with interaction effects and collinearity among variables. This postulate also highlights the power of both qualitative and quantitative chaos and complexity theories in order to observe and describe both the ...
The dynamics surrounding intimate relationships among Catholic college students is of special concern to Catholic families and educators, because these relationships often and eventually lead to marriage. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is instituted and ordained by God as the union of one man with one woman, and that sexual behavior is reserved for marriage. This review of social science literature considers whether the student culture on Catholic college and university campuses reinforces these teachings and facilitates the pathway from healthy intimate relationships to marriage.. Throughout history, our society has provided ways to encourage pair bonding through providing opportunity situations. Historically, colleges and universities-especially Catholic colleges and universities-believed that they needed to play an active role in helping their students find happiness and meaningful relationships with those of the opposite sex during their years on campus. Providing what ...
The hospitality and food science literatures specify brewing and holding temperatures for hot beverages such as coffee, while the medical literature states that those very beverage temperatures will cause scalds and harm. These two specifications are at odds with one another, and recommend different approaches to serving and handling hot beverages. Considering the disparate standards it is interesting to note that no one has reported asking consumers of hot beverages at which temperature they prefer to consume their hot beverages. This pilot study is a first step in determining the consumer preferred hot beverage temperature. The research intent is to see if a temperature, or temperature range, can be established at which consumers drink a hot beverage, in this case coffee. The research is particularly relevant given recent litigation relative to spills and burns at foodservice operations, and subsequent changes in holding temperatures at some quick service restaurant chains. The findings suggest that
Nazi Germanys justification for its aggression was regularly promoted in Nazi propaganda films depicting scenes such as beetles fighting in a lab setting to demonstrate the principles of survival of the fittest as depicted in Alles Leben ist Kampf (English translation: All Life is Struggle). Hitler often refused to intervene in the promotion of officers and staff members, preferring instead to have them fight amongst themselves to force the stronger person to prevail-strength referring to those social forces void of virtue or principle.[35] Key proponents were Alfred Rosenberg, who was hanged later at Nuremberg. Such ideas also helped to advance euthanasia in Germany, especially Action T4, which led to the murder of mentally ill and disabled people in Germany.. The argument that Nazi ideology was strongly influenced by social Darwinist ideas is often found in historical and social science literature.[36] For example, the philosopher and historian Hannah Arendt analysed the historical ...
See related article, pp 384-390. There is an ever expanding literature base implicating T lymphocytes in the development and progression of numerous cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. T lymphocytes contribute to the development of hypertension in genetic, angiotensin II (Ang-II), and salt-sensitive male experimental animals.1 Among the most definitive studies implicating T lymphocytes in hypertension are studies conducted in Rag-1−/− mice, which lack B and T lymphocytes. Guzik et al2 were the first to demonstrate that these mice have a blunted hypertensive response to Ang-II infusion. Adoptive transfer of T lymphocytes into male Rag−/− mice restored the hypertensive response to Ang-II; adoptive transfer of B lymphocytes did not alter the blood pressure (BP) response. Although low-grade inflammation, and T lymphocytes in particular, are now a recognized hallmark of hypertension, the majority of basic science literature in this field has been conducted exclusively in males, ...
Heres a quick update from the science literature on your hamstrings... Biomechanically speaking, tight hamstrings can affect the position of your pelvis, especially in forward bends. This can, in turn, affect your lumbar spine because tight hamstrings produce a pull on the ischial tuberosities and tilt your pelvis back (as shown below in figure 2). Tight Hamstrings in Your
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether cognitive impairment is related to cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: Twenty-five patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting without cardiopulmonary bypass were matched with 50 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass. All patients received the same anesthetic regimen, and one surgeon performed all the operations. A battery of 10 standard tests of neuropsychologic function were performed before, at discharge, and 3 months after the operation. A comprehensive multidimensional measure of subjective health status was used as the primary clinical measure of functional outcome. RESULTS: The groups were similar with respect to age, sex, and ventricular function and differed only in the need for a circumflex artery graft. Both groups showed significant improvement in the comprehensive multidimensional measure of subjective health status at 3 months. At discharge most neuropsychologic tests had

or anyone else, for that matter.. I will mention only one aspect of that concern: health care costs. Today, these costs are seen as a major factor in the recent unprecedented closing down of the federal government and the projected bankruptcy of the Medicare trust fund, reflecting the inability of politicians to deal realistically with the health care cost problem. In the Summer, 1995 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management, I urged health service professionals to speak out now on what they know to be true: that with community control, support and patience, they can manage to overcome the fragmentation of the health care system and guarantee access to decent health care for everyone at much less cost (Sigmond, 1995). Notice, I did not say at a much lower rate of increase, but with actual reductions in community health care costs. We spend almost double per capita what other developed nations spend, and based on available international data, our results are not as good as in many other ...

This study aimed to comprehensively assess the demographic characteristics, health behaviors, subjective health status, health-related restriction of life, and quality of life of male and female elderly aged 65 years older using data from the 2013-2015 Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS). The results showed that compared to the male elderly, the female elderly was less educated, did not have a spouse or had less household income, had poorer health behaviors, and had lower quality of life caused by restrictions in life. The female elderly had significantly lower quality of life than that of the male elderly. Various factors were found to affect quality of life in both sexes. The presence of spouse and BMI did not affect quality of life of men but did affect the quality of life of women. On the other hand, smoking affected the quality of life of men but not of women. Based on these results, more in-depth studies are needed on the female elderly, who have been reported to have lower ...

Im checking to make sure its OK to change results_in_organization_of to results_in_structural_organization_of; the latter is in ro_test.obo. It does seem to be OK in general in that the definition of the parent cellular component organization is consistent with the relation def, but Ill also look at each xp that uses this relation. Q: The xps also use has_level (see cellular x above), which isnt in ro.obo or ro_test.obo, and Im not as sure what to do about it. Q: Ive put in a bug report about how OBO-Edit 1 and 2 handle unrecognized relations (differently annoyingly) -- OBO-Edit 1.101 failed to load the file, reporting unrecognized type results_in_organization_of, whereas OBO-Edit 2beta50 loads everything and automagically converts the results_in_organization_of relation to is_a in the cross-product panel. This worries me ... is it really the desired behavior? update (18 Nov; relevant to 2 Qs above): emailed Chris to ask about relations without typedef stanzas in general, because it ...
