TY - JOUR. T1 - Is Information Science an Anomalous State of Knowledge. AU - Hollnagel, E.. PY - 1980. Y1 - 1980. N2 - This paper looks at some of the problems in information science from the experience with similar problems in psycho logy. The apparent need for a set of rigorous definitions of the basic concepts is discussed, and it is argued that although this is necessary for the natural sciences it is not necessary for sciences which concern themselves with behavioral phenomena which have a prior description in natural language. It is further argued that information science should be more interested in uncertainty than in information, and it is shown how the Anomalous State of Knowledge (ASK) paradigm may be used to describe itself, hence also informa tion science. It is finally concluded that by turning to problems of uncertainty and lack of information, rather than information, information science may avoid many of the mistakes made by psychology.. This question about the proposal title touches on the different aspects of the topic. There is an academic and scientific side commonly called Library and Information Science (as Aarthi noted) and an operational side concerned with day-to-day issues of lending institutions. To some extent, I would equate the term you used - Library Management - with the latter aspect.. But this is clearly a spectrum with plenty of overlap since presumably most (or at least many) graduates from the academic programs plan to manage or work for a library. As a result of that question, the proposal name was adjusted slightly from Library and Information Science to Libraries and Information Science. I appreciate the change because in my mind Library and Information Science (singular library) is strongly attached to the accredited academic programs. Since not all libraries have staff with degrees in library science the name communicated exclusivity to me when I first saw the change.. The initial Libraries proposal ...

Boundary objects (BO) are abstract or physical artefacts that reside in the interfaces between organisations or groups of people. The concept of BO, introduced by Star and Griesemer in an article in 1989, has been used in a broad variety of studies in different research communities from management to computer science and different fields of information science. The aim of this panel, composed of experienced BO researchers, is to provide an overview of and introduction to the state of the art of information science research informed by the theory for the researchers and practitioners participating in the conference; to illustrate the variety of studies and contexts in which the notion of BOs can be found useful in explicating connections between collections, cultures and commu- nities; and to push forward the state of the art of BO-oriented information science research by discussing new empirical and practical areas of interest and the theory itself.. ...

Within information science, there has been a considerable emphasis on models and theories of information behaviour. The recent ASIST monograph, Theories of Information Behavior, provides an overview of the many the models and theories in information science (Fisher et al., 2005).. Models such as Taylors information use environment (Palmquist, 2005) and Dervins sense-making (Tidline, 2005) provide different perspectives on how individuals identify and seek to meet their information needs. Taylor, whose image of the information use environment recognized that the users environment or situation has a critical effect on the nature of information needed, has developed some of the earliest models of information use and was a precursor of a number of models focusing on the users cognitive state. In the case of sense-making, a paradigm that focuses on the user of information and the relationship of communication, information, and meaning for that user has an associated suite of data collection and ...

Associate Dean, School of Library and Information Science, Indiana University. Dinner Program. It is easy to be overwhelmed by statistics on the growth of the Internet and commercialization of cyberspace; graphs of exponential growth confirm our impressions of living in a revolutionary age. Recently, however, contrarian opinions have emerged, notably the Nielsen/Commercenet study claiming Internet use is considerably less than net proponents suggest.. Is the net overrated? Is it being swamped by the web crawlers designed to make searching better? Is it really an Edsel running on New Coke? And what are the implications and unintended consequences for information professionals? Come hear Debora (Ralf) Shaw, the incoming President of the American Society for Information Science, address these and other ponderables of the information age.. ...

Such reviews should be used to explore new ways of deepening understanding of information behaviour as well as pointing out shortcomings in the existing research. In the literature review for the exploratory project it was noted that there is for example very little evidence of studies from the biomedical and healthcare disciplines following a wider interpretation of information behaviour as explained by Wilson (1999: 249). Studies are mostly limited to information needs and information seeking in a much narrower sense.. Although there are some overlaps, cancer palliative care seems to be marked by very individual expressions of information needs and experiences of information behaviour. This applies to patients and family members, as well as the perceptions of healthcare professionals and is in line with the individual nature of information needs noted by Van der Molen (1999) and Williamson and Manaszewicz (2002). Patients fluctuate in their specific context or situatedness in terms of what ...

Human-centered computing (HCC) studies the design, development, and deployment of mixed-initiative human-computer systems. It is emerged from the convergence of multiple disciplines that are concerned both with understanding human beings and with the design of computational artifacts. Human-centered computing is closely related to human-computer interaction and information science. Human-centered computing is usually concerned with systems and practices of technology use while human-computer interaction is more focused on ergonomics and the usability of computing artifacts and information science is focused on practices surrounding the collection, manipulation, and use of information. Human-centered computing researchers and practitioners usually come from one or more of disciplines such as computer science, human factors, sociology, psychology, cognitive science, anthropology, communication studies, graphic design and industrial design. Some researchers focus on understanding humans, both as ...
I agree that an entrepreneurial spirit has been key to Americas growth to this point and that we need to make sure that entrepreneurship and innovation continues to be a critical focus. And that starts with inspiring our students to take an interest in entrepreneurship and see it as something feasible and achievable. That was why I was excited when I spoke to a high school class of aspiring entrepreneurs last week.. A team of teachers and entrepreneurs launched a program thats running at the Science Leadership Academy this spring in Philadelphia, called Startup Afterschool. While their classmates are interning at established firms, this class of students takes a few hours each Wednesday afternoon to work on their social entrepreneurship ventures. They hear from current entrepreneurs and investors, consider markets and business models, and work on their pitches. As an entrepreneur who got my start creating products and companies in high school, I think this is a fantastic opportunity to expose ...

Laser beams can be used to create optical traps that can hold and transport small particles. Optical trapping has been used in a number of applications ranging from prototyping at the microscale to biological cell manipulation. Successfully using optical tweezers requires predicting optical forces on the particle being trapped and transported. Reasonably accurate theory and computational models exist for predicting optical forces on a single particle in the close vicinity of a Gaussian laser beam. However, in practice the workspace includes multiple particles that are manipulated using individual optical traps. It has been experimentally shown that the presence of a particle can cast a shadow on a nearby particle and hence affect the optical forces acting on it. Computing optical forces in the presence of shadows in real-time is not feasible on CPUs. In this paper, we introduce a ray-tracing-based application optimized for GPUs to calculate forces exerted by the laser beams on microparticle ...
This is the draft version of a textbook, which aims to introduce the quantum information science viewpoints on condensed matter physics to graduate students in physics (or interested researchers). We keep the writing in a self-consistent way, requiring minimum background in quantum information science. Basic knowledge in undergraduate quantum physics and condensed matter physics is assumed. We start slowly from the basic ideas in quantum information theory, but wish to eventually bring the readers to the frontiers of research in condensed matter physics, including topological phases of matter, tensor networks, and symmetry-protected topological phases ...

The amount of data being collected and stored by commercial organizations is increasing at a fast rate and hence implementing intelligent and flexible visual analytics systems is important in many business cases. The specified research project focuses on analyzing multi-dimensional event time series data and also multimedia data. An event is defined as a single, time-stamped item. Event time series data is a sequence of events which occurs 0 to N times with multiple values per time stamp. Multimedia data includes audio, image, 3D or video data. The common characteristic of these data types is that it is possible to calculate high dimensional content-based feature vectors that represent the multimedia data ...
The asymmetry of information brings difficulty for government to manage public hospitals. Therefore, Jiading District of Shanghai has been establishing DRGs-based inpatient service management system (ISMS) to effectively compare the output of different hospitals through DRGs, reward desired hospital performance and enhance inpatient service capacity. However, the impact of the implementation of DRGs-based inpatient service management (ISM) policy in Jiading district is still unknow. We therefore conducted this study to evaluate the impact of DRGs-based ISM policy on the performance of inpatient service since its implementation in Jiading District, Shanghai, China in 2017. Using an interrupted time series design, we analyzed quarterly data of seven DRGs-based performance measures from the ISMS which covered all five public hospitals in Jiading District from 2013 to 2019. We utilized the segmented linear regression model to assess the change of level and trend of performance indicators before and after

While pursuing my Masters in Library and Information Science I have noticed a disconnect between the book librarians and the tech librarians. Admittedly, when I first got to GSLIS I did not see myself as a tech person. However, my attitude since then has changed. I have realized that all librarians are or have the potential to be tech people. In fact, I think anyone at all is a tech person because it is so entrenched in our daily lives. I think the idea that only certain people are tech people is alienating girls, people of color, and other marginalized groups from careers in science and technology. And this trend is creating a highly stratified and unjust social system. Our perception of tech people is usually white, upper middle-class, heterosexual men. This group has historically been in power and will continue to be if they are the only ones designing the technologies that everyone uses. The goal of my presentation is to call librarians to challenge how they view themselves and ...
