Mô tả: Social network service (SNS) is an effective communication tool for the community of disabled people. However, there is a general paucity of research on web accessibility of SNSs. This study investigates web accessibility of four SNSs that are most popular among disabled people: Facebook, Twitter, Me2day, and Yozm. Eight disabled individuals were selected according to the type of disability: two with total blindness, two with low vision, two with brain lesions, and two with an upper extremity disability. The subjects were asked to perform four navigation-related tasks and ten general tasks for each SNS. The success rate of their performances and user satisfaction levels were then measured. The four SNSs, on average, attained a task success rate of 73 % and a user satisfaction score of 3.1 points (max. = 5), indicating that the disabled participants found the websites generally inconvenient. As a pioneering evaluative study of the web accessibility of major SNS sites for the disabled, ...
The paper looked at how as people are increasingly integrating online activities into their daily lives, disabled people are often impeded from accessing websites due to code and design barriers. Despite guidelines on how to improve web accessibility that have been around since the early days of the Web, accessibility adoption remains low. The responsibility to implement web accessibility tends to fall on web practitioners, yet prior scholarship has failed to adequately consult this group on their barriers to adoption ...

Subject: Problem accessing Citylights surveys. Hi Citylights,. Love your stories, but not your surveys! I cant use a mouse very much because my arms dont work well. Usually I tab around web pages. Anyway, on your survey page I was only able to get to the question about how many cars we have when I tabbed around. When I did try using the mouse to answer the where do I live question, I couldnt click on the words like I can on many other sites forms, I had to click the little circle before the words.. In case it helps you diagnose and fix the problem: I have a Win10 laptop and use Chrome browser Version 60.0.3112.78.. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which specifically mentions the Internet and other accessible information and communications technologies (ICT). An accessible Web can also help people with disabilities and older people more actively participate in society.. The Web is an opportunity for unprecedented access to information for people with disabilities. That is, the accessibility barriers to print, audio, and visual media can be much more easily overcome through web technologies. For example, when the primary way to get certain information was go to a library and read it on paper, there were significant barriers for many people with disabilities, including getting to the library, physically getting the resource, and reading the resource.. When that same information is also available on the Web in an accessible format, it is significantly easier for many people to access the information. Therefore, people with disabilities can have more effective and efficient access to ...

Chemoinformatics provides computer methods for learning from chemical data and for modeling tasks a chemist is facing. The field has evolved in the past 50 years and has substantially shaped how chemical research is performed by providing access to chemical information on a scale unattainable by traditional methods. Many physical, chemical and biological data have been predicted from structural data. For the early phases of drug design, methods have been developed that are used in all major pharmaceutical companies. However, all domains of chemistry can benefit from chemoinformatics methods; many areas that are not yet well developed, but could substantially gain from the use of chemoinformatics methods. The quality of data is of crucial importance for successful results. Computer-assisted structure elucidation and computer-assisted synthesis design have been attempted in the early years of chemoinformatics. Because of the importance of these fields to the chemist, new approaches should be made with

When two scientific disciplines meet, they can be mutually beneficial, fill each others voids - and complement each other, giving rise to unprecedented scientific opportunities. One such field of recent interest is chemoinformatics. Chemoinformatics plays a key role in areas as diverse as chemical genomics and drug discovery, the storage of chemical information in databases and the prediction of toxic substances. Today, these techniques are mostly used in pharmaceutical companies in the process of drug discovery, but also for example in functional foods, designed by nutritional companies to improve body functions, such as for example digestion or brain function.. While bioinformatics is known since 1976 which is defined as the study of informatics process in biotic systems, the emerging terminology in the pharmaceutical sector is commonly referred to as chemoinformatics, which is defined as the mixing of information resources to transform data into information and information into ...

With societies aging all around the world, the global burden of degenerative diseases is expected to increase exponentially. From the perspective drug development, degenerative diseases represent an especially challenging class. Clinical trials, in this context often termed disease progression studies, are long, costly, require many individuals, and have low success rates. Therefore, it is crucial to use informative study designs and to analyze efficiently the obtained trial data. The development of novel approaches intended towards facilitating both the design and the analysis of disease progression studies was the aim of this thesis.. This aim was pursued in three stages (i) the characterization and extension of pharmacometric software, (ii) the development of new methodology around statistical power, and (iii) the demonstration of application benefits.. The optimal design software PopED was extended to simplify the application of optimal design methodology when planning a disease progression ...

Mesoscopic simulation studies the structure, dynamics and properties of large molecular ensembles with millions of atoms: Its basic interacting units (beads) are no longer the nuclei and electrons of quantum chemical ab-initio calculations or the atom types of molecular mechanics but molecular fragments, molecules or even larger molecular entities. For its simulation setup and output a mesoscopic simulation kernel software uses abstract matrix (array) representations for bead topology and connectivity. Therefore a pure kernel-based mesoscopic simulation task is a tedious, time-consuming and error-prone venture that limits its practical use and application. A consequent cheminformatics approach tackles these problems and provides solutions for a considerably enhanced accessibility. This study aims at outlining a complete cheminformatics roadmap that frames a mesoscopic Molecular Fragment Dynamics (MFD) simulation kernel to allow its efficient use and practical application. The molecular fragment

There is a large amount of publicly available biodiversity data from many different data sources. When doing research, one ideally interacts with biodiversity data programmatically so their work is reproducible. The entry point to biodiversity data records is largely through taxonomic names, or common names in some cases (e.g., birds). However, many researchers have a phylogeny focused project, meaning taxonomic names are not the ideal interface to biodiversity data. Ideally, it would be simple to programmatically go from a phylogeny to biodiversity records through a phylogeny based query. Ill discuss a new project phylodiv (https://github.com/ropensci/phylodiv/) that attempts to facilitate phylogeny based biodiversity data collection (see Fig. 1). The project takes the form of an R software package. The idea is to make the user interface take essentially two inputs: a phylogeny and a phylogeny based question. Behind the scenes well do many things, including gathering taxonomic names and

The limited research that considers people from black and minority ethnic communities experiences of personalisation tends to focus on personal budgets rather than personalisation per se. This article provides an opportunity to hear the voices of people from Chinese backgrounds and their experiences of personalisation. The study used individual semi-structured interviews and focus groups to collect data from physically disabled people from Chinese backgrounds who lived in England, were aged between 18 and 70, and received social care. Data were analysed using an iterative and thematic approach, with early analysis informing the subsequent analytical rounds. The findings reveal that personalisation has the potential to transform the lives of people from Chinese backgrounds, especially when tailored support is available for people to understand and access personal budgets and put them to creative use. However, the impact of personalisation is barely evident because few eligible individuals access ...

An important product of marine biodiversity research should be the necessary knowledge and tools for adequately managing and protecting marine biodiversity. This requires knowledge on genetic and ecological mechanisms that control biodiversity (gene flow, dispersal, adaptive value of genetic polymorphisms, determination of dispersal and recruitment, species interactions including invasions, sediment transport, natural and human-induced catastrophes, etc.). It also requires knowledge on the functional role of biodiversity: what is the variability in genes, species and communities that is required for ecosystem functioning; and models on dispersal of genes and organisms, species interactions and food webs, the interaction between food webs and biogeochemical fluxes, and impact assessment of diffuse and point source pollution, coastal constructions, mass tourism and global climate change. ...

Blog accessibility, like web accessibility, is not an absolute, but rather a continuum. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 divides the guidelines into three levels - A, AA, AAA: conformance with Level A guidelines is a must for minimum accessibility; Level AA guidelines should be met; and, in an ideal world, Level AAA guidelines are met.. Admittedly, this blog about making blog accessible is less than optimally accessible. Some accessibility features - alt text for images, good colour contrast for a majority of the contrast, breadcrumb navigation - do already exist. Accessibility in other areas is lacking, which, as a Web Accessibility Consultant for the last twelve years, is annoying and frustrating (to say the least), and highlights the point I made previously that a blogs accessibility is impacted by four contributors: the blogging platform, blog theme, widgets and plug-ins, and the blogger.. Making this blog as accessible as possible will be a process - one that I would like to ...

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer for men and women; the wide adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) offers a potential to accelerate cohort-related epidemiological studies using informatics approaches. Since manual extraction from large volumes of text materials is time consuming and labor intensive, some efforts have emerged to automatically extract information from text for lung cancer patients using natural language processing (NLP), an artificial intelligence technique. In this study, using an existing cohort of 2311 lung cancer patients with information about stage, histology, tumor grade, and therapies (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery) manually ascertained, we developed and evaluated an NLP system to extract information on these variables automatically for the same patients from clinical narratives including clinical notes, pathology reports and surgery reports. Evaluation showed promising results with the recalls for stage, histology, tumor grade, and therapies achieving

Informatics techniques can contribute towards the prioritization energy by integrating facts from multiple sources (Jayjock et al. 2009; Sheldon and Cohen Hubal 2009). One example is, the EPAs NexGen possibility evaluation framework explored a range of strategies together with swift screening to prioritize most likely dangerous chemical compounds (Cohen Hubal et al. 2010; Collins et al. 2008; Cote et al. 2012; Dix et al. 2007; Egeghy et al. 2011; Krewski et al. 2014). Our aim is to assist prioritize chemical combinations that needs to be additional analyzed. To realize this purpose we introduce an informatics approach to discover combos of chemical compounds in shopper products which are connected to bronchial asthma or are recognized as EDCs. The emphasis on these types of solutions is motivated in part from the frequency and kind of publicity (look at products and solutions which include deodorant or toothpaste which can be employed daily and are used on to the pores and skin or mucosa). Informatics strategies can contribute into the prioritization exertion by integrating facts from a number of sources (Jayjock et al. 2009; Sheldon and Cohen Hubal 2009). Such as, the EPAs NexGen risk assessment framework explored a range of solutions together with speedy screening to prioritize potentially harmful chemical substances (Cohen Hubal et al. 2010; Collins et al. 2008; Cote et al. 2012; Dix et al. 2007; Egeghy et al. 2011; Krewski et al. 2014). Our goal is that will help prioritize chemical mixtures that should be further more analyzed. To achieve this purpose we introduce an informatics approach to discover mixtures of chemicals in client products which are connected with asthma or have already been identified as EDCs. The emphasis on these products and solutions is motivated partly by the frequency and kind of publicity (contemplate merchandise for example deodorant or toothpaste that happen to be made use of every day and therefore are used straight to the pores and skin or ...

The SenseLab Project is a long-term effort to build integrated, multidisciplinary models of neurons and neural systems. It was founded in 1993 as part of the original Human Brain Project, which began the development of neuroinformatics tools in support of neuroscience research. The SenseLab project involves novel informatics approaches to constructing databases and database tools for collecting and analyzing neuroscience information, using the olfactory system as a model, with extension to other brain systems. ...
Here, we employed a bioinformatics approach to identify novel molecular determinants to predict tumor progression and overall survival in gastric cancer patients. In particular, we directly assessed whether nuclear-derived mRNA species encoding proteins involved in mitochondrial protein translation and OXPHOS are able to successfully predict clinical outcome in gastric cancer. As such, using in silico validation, we have now established the prognostic value of these mitochondrial biomarkers, in a defined population of gastric cancer patients. In this context, we interrogated 5 year follow-up data collected from a group of N = 359 gastric cancer patients. Importantly, in this group of cancer patients, Ki67 and PCNA (conventional markers of cell proliferation) were associated with tumor progression, as might be expected. Using this simplified informatics approach, we identified ∼75 new individual mitochondrial gene probes that effectively predicted tumor progression, with hazard-ratios (HR) of ...

This study, the effects of computer simulations on the teaching and learning of Atomic Combinations was carried out in the Tshwane North District of Gauteng Province in South Africa. The study employed a non-randomized control-group pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design involving two grade 11 Physical Science classes; one as an experimental (52) and the other as a control group (53). An Achievement Test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions and a Structured Questionnaire designed for teacher and learner participants were the principal data collection tools used. The questionnaire was developed to answer research questions two and three that guided this study. The questionnaire tested how much learners and teachers were familiar with the use of computers and if there were any hindrances to computer usage. The achievement test instrument was administered as a pre-test and post-test to answer research question one. The experimental group received computer-assisted teaching and the ...

In its 1995 version, Prentice Hall Exploring Physical Science became infamous as an example of the incompetent textbooks that are imposed on students in many of our public schools. When Lawrence S. Lerner reviewed the 1995 version for The Textbook Letter, he described many of its defects, he said that educators should avoid it like the plague, and he showed that Prentice Halls editors, at the time when the book was printed, knew that it contained erroneous material [see note 1, below]. More recently, the 1995 Exploring Physical Science has been exposed in the popular media -- first in a long article published by The [Baltimore] Sun, then in a long segment of the ABC television networks program 20/20. The 20/20 segment included an interview in which Anthea Maton, the woman whom Prentice Hall had alleged to be the primary author of Exploring Physical Science, said that she had never even seen Exploring Physical Science until the interviewer showed it to her [note 2]. Prentice Hall is now a ...
