The African Economic Outlook 2017 presents the continents current state of affairs and forecasts its situation for the coming two years. This annual report examines Africas performance in crucial areas: macroeconomics, external financial flows and tax revenues, trade policies and regional integration, human development, and governance. For its 16th edition, the report takes a hard look at the role of entrepreneurs in Africas industrialisation process. It proposes practical steps that African governments can take to carry out effective industrialisation strategies. Policies aimed at improving skills, business clusters and financing could remove important constraints on African private enterprises.

Overview This report presents results of the 2017 Northern Prawn Fishery survey, comprising survey based estimates of financial and economic performance for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 financial years, as well as non-survey based estimates of economic performance for the fishery in the 2016-17 financial year. Key issues * Profit at full equity, a profit indicator that assumes that all assets are fully owned by operators, increased for the average boat in the fishery between 2014-15 and 2015-16, from $531,556 to $737,160. * Net economic returns (NER) for the fishery rose from $20.7 million in 2014-15 to $30.9 million in 2015-16. The increase in NER from 2014-15 to 2015-16 was primarily driven by faster growth in fishing income than in fishing costs. The growth in fishing income was driven by increased landings of tiger prawns which increased by 85 per cent in 2015-16. * Preliminary non-survey based estimates indicate that NER in the NPF declined by 2 per cent in 2016-17 to $30.3 million ...

As the African continent embraces industrialization as the driver for economic growth, governments are acutely aware that this has to be done in an environmentally sustainable way. Lessons from other parts of the world have shown that industrialization could also lead to massive environmental degradation if not well managed. Recent developments in industrial biotechnology offer an attractive mechanism for mitigating environmental degradation associated with industrial activities.. The East African region is endowed with several unique and extreme habitats all harboring a rich microbial diversity. Most industrial enzymes currently in use are obtained from microorganisms. Already some enzymes with attractive potential for industrial application have been discovered in the region. Despite its huge potential for biotechnology innovation, to date, the region is not exploiting this microbial resource. To use this resource for the benefit of the region, it is important that enzyme producing companies ...

Row House is shared-walls developments, majorly built in cities with low space to accommodate people. This style of housing appeared first in the 16th century and in some parts of the world during the industrialisation period. These were developed at that time to accommodate factory workers. Hence, they were developed near the city centers around industries.. Row houses developed during the industrialisation period were very shabby and dingy as the basic human requirements were neglected. Majority of the houses didnt have any proper ventilation and sanitation facilities. With time, although the layouts changed for good but even now, many row houses are shabbily built.. These days row house developers are hiring effective, well-experienced architects to ensure good design and layout of the development. Modern Row House Designs have the basic facilities covered and subsequently, more and more workers and employees in urban cities are ready to acquire these row houses.. Largely these houses have ...

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, more than 20 times more efficient than CO2 in trapping solar heat on a short timescale.. Twenty-eight billion tonnes is roughly equivalent to the annual emissions of this powerful greenhouse gas from all the landfills in the world today, which in turn account for about six percent of global methane emissions.. The major contributors are likely to have been deforestation, biomass burning and rice paddies, rather than geological sources such as mud volcanoes, according to the study published in the journal Nature.. Big early increases coincided with the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and the Roman empire (27 BC to the last western emperor in 476 AD), which along with an advanced Indian civilisation at the time chopped down millions of trees to heat homes and power their metal-working industries, often to provide weapons.. Based on archaeological metal production estimates, we calculate that the charcoal used for metal production at the peak of the Roman ...

The Accra Metropolitan Area has an urban population of over 2 million. Accra is the Greater Accra Regions economic and administrative hub, and serves as the anchor of the larger Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which is inhabited by about 4 million people, making it the thirteenth-largest metropolitan area in Africa.. The period between 1960 and 1970 saw rapid industrialization and expansion in Accras manufacturing and commercial sectors. This contributed to high rural-urban migration to the city, and consequently a high population growth rate. The stagnation of the Ghanaian economy during the 1970s slowed the growth of Accras population. Later, however, the decline in agriculture in rural communities in Ghana and rising industrialization in urban regions, coupled with the late-1980s boom in the service sector, once again propelled immigration to Accra. The primacy of the Accra Metropolitan Area as the Greater Accra regions administrative, educational, industrial and commercial center ...
Industrialisation and urbanisation are historically seen as the biggest motors for family change. Family structures changed from the predominantly extended family organization of pre-industrial society to the predominantly nuclear family organisation of industrial society.(1). Pre-industrial extended family structure worked because they were multi-functional, kinship-based and economically productive for the time. The situation arose because of the labour intensive farm work that comes with agriculture, the limitations of moving away from family and a lack of social security and welfare systems.(1). To accommodate the changes that came with industrialisation, the old extended families adapted to the need for geographic mobility and labour flexibility.(1). Although sociology does not offer any predictive theory about the forms the family will take, it does highlight the role of social norms in determining categories of people suitable for forming families with.(1). The different niches of an economic ecosystem, such as the various machinery and equipment sectors, thrive as a self-reinforcing web of engineers, high-skill production workers, operational managers and factories. As of 2003, Europes manufacturing sector made up 32% of its nonfinancial economy, while the manufacturing sector of the United States comprised only 13% of its nonfinancial sectors. The decline of American machinery and manufacturing sectors, in conjunction with the on-again/off-again nature of American renewable energy policy, explains why Europe and Japan are so far ahead of the United States in the transition to a more sustainable economy. And Americas decline can be traced to one overriding factor: a military budget that comprises nearly half of the worlds military spending. For decades, as the late Professor Seymour Melman showed in many books (such as After Capitalism) and in numerous articles, the Pentagon has been draining not just money but also the engineering, scientific ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! We establish that the Turkish economy underwent a remarkable transformation during the last decade. We identify the underpinnings of this successful transformation as well as the inadequate policies that enabled vulnerabilities to accumulate. Despite improvement in the economic fundamentals, volatility and dependence on external finance not only persisted, but actually increased during the last decade. We discuss the structural causes of the widening external deficit. Finally, we evaluate Turkeys outstanding economic performance in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the recent soft landing and rebalancing episode. Among manufacturing sectors in Australia, food makers trail only behind the mining industry as the biggest spenders on energy. According to the latest figures available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the food manufacturing industry pays a staggering $706 million a year on its electricity bills, accounting for 17 per cent of the entire manufacturing industrys energy expenditure. Whats even more alarming is that this spending does not match consumption - with the segment accounting for just 10 per cent of total energy consumption. The combination of inefficient energy spending and high usage becomes increasingly problematic when taking into account rising energy costs and insecurity of energy supplies.. Alcohol industry campaigns to promote responsible drinking have little effect, and may even be counterproductive. Thats one of the key findings of a new Alcohol Concern Cymru report to be launched on Wednesday 12 October, which has been written by researchers from Glyndŵr and Bangor Universities.. Reviewing evidence from across the world, researchers at the two north Wales universities concluded that alcohol industry health messages are often ambiguous and lack clarity over safe behaviour with regards to alcohol. Health messages are typically found in the context of adverts that promote drinking as a positive lifestyle choice.. The reports authors point out that drinks industry-supported statements and campaigns typically portray alcohol as a neutral product that only causes problems in the hands of irresponsible consumers, whereas the evidence suggests that alcohol is an intrinsically dangerous substance, and that alcohol marketing and distribution require careful regulation and ...

WASHINGTON - Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) modified the hazardous waste management regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to conditionally exclude solvent-contaminated wipes from hazardous waste regulations provided that businesses clean or dispose of them properly. The rule is based on EPAs final risk analysis, which was peer reviewed in 2008 and published for public comment in 2009, that concluded wipes contaminated with certain hazardous solvents do not pose significant risk to human health and the environment when managed properly. EPA estimates that the final rule will result in a net savings of between $21.7 million and $27.8 million per year. Wipes are used in conjunction with solvents for cleaning and other purposes by tens of thousands of facilities in numerous industrial sectors, such as printers, automobile repair shops and manufacturers of automobiles, electronics, furniture and chemicals. When trying to protect their hearing, are you solving the wrong problem? According to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 22 million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noises each year. The CDC reports that in 2007, 82% of the cases involving occupational hearing loss were reported among workers in the manufacturing sector. Thats 8 out of every 10 workers who are employed in the manufacturing industry. In fact, hearing loss is the most common form of work-related injury reported in the manufacturing sector according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It seems that what most are doing isnt working.. Most work related hearing loss occurs gradually in the first ten years of employment in a manufacturing environment. That means that many new employees wont even think about protecting their hearing until they are required to. Because the damage is done slowly over time, the worker will not notice a problem until methods of prevention are too ...
Overpricing Drugs According to industry apologists, high profits in the pharmaceutical industry are justified due to the unusual nature of the industry: research and development costs for new drugs require huge investments and involve relatively great risks as to whether the investment will pay off. Critics however, claim that prices are kept artificially high even after the initial investment has been recovered.. A report (released on 10 July 2001) by the consumer health organisation Families USA refutes the pharmaceutical industrys claim that high drug prices are needed to sustain research and development. The report documents how drug companies are spending more than twice as much on marketing, advertising, and administration than they do on research and development; that drug company profits, on average higher than any other industry, exceed research and development expenditures; and that drug companies provide lavish compensation packages for their top executives [4].. In addition, money ...
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. But when matter is transformed from one state to another, in the process of production, the earth is not capable of absorbing and assimilating many waste that are dumped on it. This results in pollution. Furthermore, an increase in the level of pollution over time may create problems for sustainable economic development. Therefore, the society has to find ways and means to resolve the conflict, between the increase in production on the one hand and the preservation of the environment on the other, when considering the inter-generational equity with respect to environmental quality.. This paper deals with industrial air pollutant which is a fund pollutant. Fund pollutants are pollutants for which the environment has some absorptive capacity. Therefore the aim of pollution control, when dealing with air pollutants, is to keep the level of pollutants below the absorptive capacity of the environment. The paper deals with the various policy instruments, ...

The region still contributes to the low consumption of ABS products which is expected to be a scope for further growth in the region. India is projected to be the most emerging market in the region owing to growing application industries. ...
The Industrial Revolution transforms London.. Capital investment and labour turns London into a centre of diverse manufacturing (see below list of London manufacturing areas). Londons 21st century streets still mark the citys former manufacturing processes, such as Threadneedle Street, Ironmonger Lane and Wood Street.. Londons industrialisation comes at a price. Capitalists and workers reguarly struggle against each other over profits, wages and working conditions. But they mutually need each other again after World War II. Bombs had destroyed swathes of Londons labour-intensive industries. Capital investment enables working Londoners to replace Londons factories and workshops with new manufacturing plant.. By the end of the 1950s, factories employ one-in-three working Londoners. Londoners form 20% of Britains engineering workforce - and make almost half of the clothes worn by British women. Londons seven docks employ 30,000 people - mainly men - in the early 1960s.. UK manufacturing ...

Succeeding in price and quality competition is not possible on a domestic basis alone. Adjusting to globalization is vital for the Finnish pulp and paper industry. Expanding production to other continents is indispensable so that the future competitiveness of domestic production can also be ensured. Finnish industry cannot respond to the needs of customers around the world on a domestic basis alone.. Succeeding in global competition is just as indispensable for the Finnish forest industries now as internationalization and the resulting consolidation and strong growth were a few decades ago. If bold steps had not been taken then, in all probability the Finnish forest industries would today consist of subsidiary mills directed from head offices abroad, more likely to shrink than to grow.. The operating model for the global paper industry in the coming years is quite clear. Pulp mills will be built in South America and Russia. Paper and board machines will be located in Asia, especially China. In ...
While industry sectors are defined on the basis of the goods and services which they mainly produce, the tourism industry is defined according to the status of the consumer. That is, it is the characteristics of the consumer that determine whether the production is included within the scope of tourism. The Tourism Satellite Account provides a means by which the economic aspects of tourism can be drawn out and analysed separately using the structure of the main industry sectors where at least 25 per cent of the total output of the product must be consumed by visitors. The industry sector sub-divisions included for employment purposes include: Accommodation, cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services, clubs, pubs, taverns and bars, rail transport, road transport and motor vehicle hiring, taxi transport, other road transport, motor vehicle hiring, air, water and other transpot, travel agency and tour operator services, cultural services, casinos and other gambling services, sports and recreation ...

An innovative real-time formaldehyde monitoring system based on the evanescent field absorption of light by a formaldehyde-sensitive cladding of a plastic optical fiber has been developed. The sensor performs 15 min integrated measurements (limit of detection: 0.03 to 0.20 ppmv) followed by an automatic regeneration process by air.. The sensor has demonstrated remarkable performance when installed at a paper impregnation process of an industrial facility and could be easily deployed in other industries and processes where formaldehyde means a relevant occupational risk. Its ruggedness, selectivity and sensitivity, smart auto-regeneration, and low maintenance satisfy the requirements for a powerful analytical tool to in situ monitor formaldehyde levels in industrial environments.. The monitoring system may be easily connected to alarm devices and to specific control measures (e.g. door locking, local exhaust ventilation, etc.) that would be autonomously activated when a threshold concentration be ...

Although the main purpose of the NBR is to collect revenue, various types of tax exemption, reduction in rate or tax benefits have been given with respect to income tax, VAT and customs duty for the sake of industrialisation, employment generation, increase of business scope, protection of domestic industries, attraction of foreign investment and establishment of a just and equitable society ...
Industry giants are threatening to swallow up Americas carefully regulated alcohol industry, and remake America in the image of booze-soaked Britain. England has a drinking problem. Since 1990, teenage alcohol consumption has doubled. Since World War II, alcohol intake for the population as a whole has doubled, with a third of that increase occurring since just 1995. The United Kingdom has very high rates of binge and heavy drinking, with the average Brit consuming the equivalent of nearly ten liters of pure ethanol per year.
Air pollution is a serious problem in thickly populated and industrialized areas in Thailand, especially in Bangkok. The air pollution in Bangkok is abundant, especially in areas where pollution sources and the human population are concentrated. Economic growth and industrialization are proceeding at a rapid pace, accompanied by increasing emissions of air polluting sources. Furthermore, though the variety and quantities of polluting sources have increased dramatically, the development of a suitable method for monitoring the pollution causing sources has not followed at the same pace. Environmental impacts of air pollutants have impact on public health, vegetation, material deterioration etc. To prevent or minimize the damage caused by atmospheric pollution, suitable monitoring systems are urgently needed that can rapidly and reliably detect and quantify polluting sources for monitoring by regulating authorities in order to prevent further deterioration of the current pollution levels. ...

This staggering extent of water pollution is very serious because water can and does transport pollution from one location to another. There is growing industrialization all over the world and the worlds population is also growing rapidly. There are now millions of people who live near rivers, along coastlines and various waterways. Obviously, these are the sources of heavy water pollution. In addition, industries also have been fairly irresponsible in their attitudes, till recently dumping all chemical wastes into nearby waters, with not many of them worrying about the consequences of doing so ...
4 November 2014, Vienna - Industrialization can be an important tool for poverty and hunger reduction but should not come at the expense of agricultural development, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said today. Industrial development and agriculture should complement each other, he told participants at the Second Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development Forum (ISID Forum II) in Vienna (3-4 November). Graziano da Silva stressed the need to strengthen links between agriculture and other sectors of the economy to build sustainable food systems. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, also speaking at the event organized by the United Nations Development Organization (UNIDO), underscored this point, saying that promoting food security should be a priority for industrial development.. Supporting farmers to add value to the food chain goes beyond the monetary dimension of increasing their incomes, Graziano da Silva argued, saying: It means more nutritious and healthy ...
The present study focused on the East Asia, especially China for the past few decades to investigate (1) relationship between the change in human activities such as economy and industry and the change in emissions of a anthropogenic gasses and aerosols, and (2) the influence of the emitted gases and aerosols on the climate change and air pollution.. The macroanalysis of economy was performed as planned. The economic development in the East Asian countries led by the industrialization brought increases in energy consumption and emissions of CO2, SO2 and others. However, SO2 emission has not increased so much as expected. The emission density of CO2 has not increased or has decreased due to an improvement of energy efficiency.. The emission inventory was developed according to the initial plan, which includes anthropogenic greenhouse gases, aerosols, and precursors of aerosols for the period, 1980-2003. Figure 1, for example, shows the changes in the amount of the emission of SO2, NOx, and Black ...
The Los Angeles River, reengineered from the late 1930s to the 1960s into a concrete channel for flood control and industrialization, has recently been the focus of revitalization efforts. Our Urban Agriculture Green Infrastructure Plan seeks to transform a known food desert along the river into a series of healthy, resilient neighborhoods capable of growing and cultivating their own food.. Stretching 660 acres, this urban agriculture hub would build community; provide greater access to healthy food among residents in the area; and stimulate economic development. New industries could include farming, insect farming, beekeeping, animal husbandry, aquaculture, and fungiculture. And, such sustainable business enterprises could set up shop in what are currently abandoned or underused lots, community gardens, or even on rooftops. Ultimately, the plan provides a vision for a future LA-and a future LA River-that is healthy, connected, and equitably prosperous.. ...
Semiconductor Industry, 2008. U.S. Market Overview. Since the 1990s, the trend towards global semiconductor competition has accelerated. Costs and risks for creating new semiconductor technology and production capacity have expanded rapidly, while the capabilities of competitors worldwide have increased as well. The efficiency level was achieved using monocrystalline silicon large-area solar cells and a low-cost industrial process. According to Silfab and ISC Konstanz, this process has the potential to produce IBC cells with more than 24% efficiency. The ZEBRA cell concept is based on 156 mm x 156 mm n-type monocrystalline silicon wafers and is a back-contact/back-junction cell. The technology is now ready for industrialization, and Silfab is moving toward a partnership aimed at the pilot stage and, subsequently, industrial implementation. ...
In 1928, Stalin introduced the first five-year plan for building a socialist economy. In place of the internationalism expressed by Lenin throughout the Revolution, it aimed to build Socialism in One Country. In industry, the state assumed control over all existing enterprises and undertook an intensive program of industrialization. In agriculture, rather than adhering to the lead by example policy advocated by Lenin,[35] forced collectivization of farms was implemented all over the country. In the 1930s homosexuality was re-criminalized across the whole of the Soviet Union. Henceforth anyone involved in homosexual acts could be sent to prison for up to five years. Famines ensued, causing millions of deaths; surviving kulaks were persecuted and many sent to Gulags to do forced labour.[36] Social upheaval continued in the mid-1930s. Stalins Great Purge resulted in the execution or detainment of many Old Bolsheviks who had participated in the October Revolution with Lenin. According to ...

Description: The Akosombo Dam on the Volta River in Ghana was built in 1963 to provide cheap energy to fuel industry and to accelerate the economic growth of the country. It provides hydroelectric power, enhanced fishing and water transportation upstream, and improved opportunities for irrigated farming, especially in the lower reaches, and their attendant economic multiplier effects. A few years after the construction of this major dam, a rapid expansion of industrialization took place in Ghana. This brought about an exponential increase in demand for more electrical power. This led to the construction of a smaller dam at Akuse, downstream of the Akosomho Dam in 1981 and the formation of a headpond at Kpong. The impoundment of the river at the two sites (Akosombo and Kpong) caused an alteration in the existing ecological and biophysical processes in the river basin, including a slowing of the flow of the river, upstream and downstream. Changes in the natural processes, such as a reduction in ...
In the process of the development, establishment and improvement of industrialization, the pension system has played an important role in maintaining social stability and promoting economic development, and it became the safety valve of social and economic operation. Chinese introduced the pension system under direction of socialist ideology, the reform of the system is mainly carried out by governments executive order, and distribute to other places. However, with the establishment of Chinas market economy system, the pension system has also undergone a structural change, such as the imple-mentation of multi-level pension system, government policy and private account system, and the rural pension insurance system. Rapid worldwide industrialization and population growth is going to lead to an extensive environmental pollution. Therefore, so many people are currently suffering from the water shortage induced by the respective pollution, as well as poor air quality and a huge fund is wasted in the world each year due to the relevant problems. Environmental remediation necessitates implementation of novel materials and technologies, which are cost and energy efficient. Nanomaterials, with their unique chemical and physical properties, are an optimum solution. Accordingly, there is a strong motivation in seeking nano-based approaches for alleviation of environmental problems in an energy efficient, thereby, inexpensive manner. Thanks to a high porosity and surface area presenting an extraordinary permeability (thereby an energy efficiency) and selectivity, respectively, nanofibrous membranes are a desirable candidate. Their functionality and applicability is even promoted when adopting a nanocomposite strategy. In

In 2013 we reported on the research fraud regarding a scientific study that was used to support the theory that high levels of cholesterol and saturated fats were linked to an increase in heart disease. This study, the Sydney Diet Heart Study, was supposed to support the claim that dietary saturated fats led to high levels of heart disease, and that one needed to switch to polyunsaturated oils and also take cholesterol-lowering drugs to avoid these so-called dangerous levels of cholesterol. But researchers uncovered data that was not previously published which contradicted the conclusions of the study. The problem is that the science has never supported this theory, the lipid theory of heart disease. But it did create a multi-billion dollar industry for cholesterol-lowering drugs and polyunsaturated oils, the new expeller-pressed vegetable oils mainly from corn and soybeans, that only entered the food chain after World War II and the age of industrialization. The British Medical Journal ...
ABSTRACT: Stabilization has a long history in beer production. In former times, beer was stabilized by long storage in wooden barrels. During this very traditional and unsystematic method wood derived tannins and beer proteins reacted, and the resulting beer showed a higher colloidal and taste stability. With industrialization of brewing, wooden barrels disappeared, and filtration became a very important step in brewing as distribution channels became more complex and beer was shipped all around the world. Production of a brilliant, clear, and stable beer is the major aim of end-filtration, aside from the removal of yeast and turbidity after fermentation. Nowadays, for these stabilization purposes, the use of silica gel and PVPP is widely spread in the brewing industry. In recent times natural tannin based stabilization aids also came into the market. For these trials a highly purified high molecular weight hydrolyzable commercial tannic acid product was used in-line before end-filtration. ...
Libertarianism is classical liberalism. Classical liberalism is, or was, the Puritan sect known as the Levelers, who opposed aristocracy, Kings, and Bishops, but supported private property in the means of production, supported natural inequality, opposed socialism and communism, opposed them for a mixture of religious reasons(God ordained private property and capitalism in the fall) and quite modern reasons (price control and debasing the currency has the consequences that it does, therefore wrecking the market does not work). Trouble with the Leveller-ClassicLiberal-Libertarian theory is that if everyone is equal before the law you have to give everyone the vote, and then someone comes along and says Vote for me and I will kill all the classic liberals and you can take their stuff.. The libertarians, the levelers, were of course correct on capitalism. We intend to revert to the most recent known working social order, the one that gave us science, technology, industry, industrialization, and ...

The fossil/proto-fossil distinction helpfully focuses Malms analysis on the historical transition between these two economic formations. The key issue then becomes: How did self-sustaining economic growth become the main driver of coal burning during the Industrial Revolution? On one level, the question answers itself. There is only one economic system that has ever generated self-sustained growth and fossil combustion on the scale required to explain climate change: capitalism. The reason is that capitalism is the only system driven by the competitive drive for increased monetary values, achieved by extracting surplus value from workers in production using any and all means available, including fossil fuels. Naturally the devil is in the details. Exactly how and why was fossil burning adopted by and then hardwired into the capitalist industrialization process? Here, Malm gives us a two-part explanation. The first part builds upon Marxs mature analysis of machinery and factory systems, which, ...
The creation of MERS is consistent with the need to clear obstacles in time and space to capital flows. When the US needed to physically adapt itself to post WWII modernity, it cleared out the slums of smokestack industrialization. Urban renewal provided huge amounts of capital and jobs to destroy whole neighborhoods and replace them with urban college campuses, interstate highways, such as I-95 on the East Coast, tearing out the river wards of Philadelphia and replacing homes with an elevated concrete super highway, or Robert Moses in NYC, tearing up whole neighborhoods and preparing the foundation for the dominant service sector that replaced factory work, as symbolized by the twin towers built on reclaimed water. Haussmanns rebuilding of Paris, putting in water and sewer service, tearing down medieval steets so narrow that trade could not be conducted and cholera was a Parisienne feature, opened up the city to build the infrastructure of telecommunication with the telegraph and rapid transit ...
